Is it supposed to be from the court hearing for Ray Williams. It mentions that The University Of Akron will accpect Ray Williams. Does this mean he will be playing football next year????? Anybody know anyhting about this.

Then Ray Williams and his side spoke. He mentioned that Lorenzo Hunter "was my little brother...People who know me know how much Lorenzo meant to me." It turns the University of Akron will accept Williams once he gets his diploma from the Cleveland Schools, as he was a 1/2 credit short of graduating from Benedictine and finished up in the Cleveland school system. Williams's attorneys also had several character witnesses speak on his behalf. The common theme for both Huddleston and Williams was that they needed a chance to havesomeone turn their lives around (my question is, shouldn't Benedictine have been that opportunity that they were now asking for?).

If the MAC is looking for a team to replace Marshall, it looks like it could be us...I was hoping that it would be solely in wins/losses, and not the character of the recruit. I hope this isn't true. It would be a PR nightmare. We're doing so well right now, we don't need to take on a kid convicted of aggravated manslaughter. There are other good RB's out there that don't have such baggage.

Can't accepted a kid convicted of sexual battery and had a convited felon as a QB. He should go there.

Just say no, JD.

While I have some misgivings about young Mister Ray Williams I also think of the line from the movie Seabiscuit where the trainer Tom Wilson says, "you don't throw a whole life away because one part is broken". Let's give the kid a chance.

As for shipping him off to Cant State, why?

Coach Lee Owens mentioned in conversation (he IS a friend of mine) that a football team is composed of every sort of character you find in society. Thus, you find the good and the bad. As grown ups and leaders we attempt to wean the young to the good. Then we trust in Providence to the outcome of our efforts. Let us do the same with Ray Williams.

For Ray's sake, I hope that he goes far away from Cleveland. He needs to get his life in order. If he comes to Akron, he won't play next year anyway. He was going to be a prop 48 kid at WV. My guess is that the rumor is true. Ted Ginn Sr, the Glenville coach, has been looking out for Ray. Ted and JD are pretty tight. If Ray comes in, stays clean for a year and makes grades, he may be suiting up in 2006. By that time, a lot of this buzz would have died down. Hopefully Javon Ringer is slotted to be our #1 RB in 2006.

This would have been his year to sit, right? Would he be elegible in 2005?

Don't do it, JD.

Put yourself in the situation of Coach Pruett at Marshall when he took in Randy Moss -- I know he wasn't convicted of manslaughter, but lets face it Williams didn't kill anyone either -- he was involved in a robbery that went wrong -- I know it's not right, but I do believe in second chances. I'm not going to condemn the kid or JD before I give him a chance. I wish the kid all the luck in th world. People are always telling me I'm way to conservative and don't know what it's like to grow up in the innner city deal with the things those kids deal with and I agree. But -- this could be the one chance this kid has to make change his life. If someone was killed when Bosley broke into cars (ie someone tried to shoot him to defend their car and shot someone else) he would have had the same charge as Williams.

I don't know if he's coming and maybe I"m just rambling -- but I'm willing to give him a chance and if he doesn't come to Akron -- I'll wish him luck and turning his life around.

If the kid has not graduated yet, then would it be safe to assume that if he passes the ACT or SAT with the required score he could play next year?

Quite honestly, I could care less whether a kid has a criminal past or not. I want to win the MAC. Let's not kid ourselves. Nobody sits around Sunday through Friday worrying about what the Zips are doing on their time off from football. Let's win now!

Sign him JD! :thumb:

Lots of teams win the MAC without criminals. Lots of teams compete at the highest level of NCAA D-1 football without criminals. When I bring my son to "Meet the Team Day" I want him to meet guys like Cherry, Sparks, Frye, Basch, Blackburn, Payne, etc. I don't want him meeting thugs. I saw John Clarke selling crushed aspirin as cocaine at Super America...Marcus Reliford breaking into off campus housing...Mack Warren selling crack out of his dorm room. Faust took in plenty of suspect guys. It's taken 9 years to shed that image, and I have no desire to watch history repeat itself.

Let's not kid ourselves.  Nobody sits around Sunday through Friday worrying about what the Zips are doing on their time off from football.  Let's win now!

No one has really had to worry about what the guys recruited over the past several years were doing Sunday through Friday. You start recruiting guys that face manslaughter charges and that will change.

If JD takes on the guy, I have to have faith that he did exhaustive homework beforehand. And, I still won't like it.

Williams' college future uncertain

Wednesday, December 08, 2004

Speculation that former Benedictine High tailback Raymond Williams -- recently convicted and then given probation for his role in the death of former teammate Jon Huddleston -- will wind up at one of the open enrollment universities in the MAC (Akron or Toledo) is very, very premature.

Yes, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold has given him six months to enroll in a four-year college or be sent to jail. According to Williams' confidants, Akron, Toledo and Florida State have inquired about his status. But they also note Williams has to first secure his high school diploma or GED. It's understood he finished the required workload last summer, but it has yet to be approved.

Then, considering each university has its own admission criteria regarding felons, Williams must pass those guidelines and be ready for the potential restrictions that go with them. Williams must be able to pay for his education, because he can't get a football scholarship until he is eligible.

Felons are restricted in what kind of government aid they can receive. In a best-case scenario, Williams gets his diploma/GED within the next eight weeks, is cleared by a university to enroll, then pays for his education while he gets his eligibility. He can then get a scholarship in 2006.

Any misstep along the way, including failure to maintain a 2.0 GPA, and the judge can still send Williams to jail.

Dear Judge Strickland-Saffold,

Please send Raymond Williams to prison NOW. He is much more likely to be a responsible citizen -- and student and potentially athlete later if he serves his time and understands he can't get out of responsibility for his actions by means of his athletic prowess. It sounds like you are releasing him strictly because of his potential as a student-athlete. That's wrong.

Does anyone at the PD proofread Elton's articles? Huddleston got the same deal as Williams. Lorenzo Hunter got killed. I guess that's close enough for Elton. Some beat writer.
