Eric Dickerson and Craig James were known as the Pony Express back in the old SWC before the shenanigans caught up with the Mustangs and the NCAA slammed them with the "death penalty". johnnyzip84
Wow, I had obviously forgotten. That's sad and funny all at once I keep meaning to watch the ESPN show (Pony Excess) about this, but haven't found the time yet.
Lee Adams
Actually according to legend Dickerson was going to A+M initially. Changed his mind after they bought him the car. A+M recruiter pissed him off apparently. Guess A+M couldn't really ask for the car back could they. SMU (SOUTHERN MILLIONAIRES UNIVERSITY) just gave him more money than A+M. Even th governor of Texas was involved in that mess.
johnnyzip84
Thanks. I had forgotten how crazy recruiting had become down there in the '70s. Like I mentioned earlier, I need to watch that ESPN special "Pony Excess" sometime.
Zipmeister
Given the results of the game last night, look for TP to have some new tats soon. Those MVP trophies go for over a $1,000.
Dr Z
Will the Zips face skinny little Braxton Miller in September since Pryor won't be around? He has two stiffs to beat out, senior Joe Bauserman and sophomore Kenny Guiton. Start your film study now defense.
GP1
Start your film study now defense. Even though I didn't see these games in person, here is what I learned. 1. He is much faster than future D-III players. 2. He is really good at throwing the ball to wide open players on a bubble screen. 3. The one thing that I like to see he did. A couple of time he throws the ball towards his receivers and has confidence they will catch the ball. Doesn't try to win the game on his own evern though he probably could. Buckzip
It may be Taylor Graham at QB. No way is it Bauserman and probably not Guiton. Miller is supposedly a much better QB than TP at the same point in their careers FWIW.

And that "loaner car" thing was probably just a big misunderstanding or something. Whoever they choose to replace him against us, I just hope it's an absolutely poor decision. However, EDick still claims that Tex A&M had nothing to do with the car -- "My grandma bought that car". Don't argue w/granma.

GP1
Who starts against Akron? I clicked on this link to read the story, but I was too distracted by the pop culture links to the right to read. Whether or not Pawn Shop Pryor (psp) plays is not important in a game like this for tOSU. They are going to come out and try to run their base offense for four quarters like they do during the MAC portion of their schedule to try and get everyone ready for the season. They can do that with a back-up.

Add this to the loss of several other starters due to graduation. Then consider that the Zips run defense, while far from stellar, was actually fairly decent in 2010. Perhaps even a slight improvement here might make it somewhat difficult for the Red & Silver to simply run it down the Zips throats using their basic offense without at least getting the back-up QB involved beyond simply handing the ball off. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not making a case for a glorious upset. I just think these factors might make this contest a little more interesting than one might initially expect from a Big 10 power hosting a team that went 1-10 the prior season. Some of what we don't know based upon the above is how many of those points during the PSP years were scored with back-up players in the game. BCS level teams use these games to play a lot of different players and they typically can score some points with the back-up players. What is clear from the scores is that tOSU has strangled the offenses of MAC schools during the PSP years. At the end of the day, PSP is the only guy on the team who can't be replaced at the same level based upon available or incoming back-up players. Even though most of us hate tOSU, it would not be reasonable to believe most of the positions they field are not replaceable. The overall trend is in these seven years, tOSU beat the MAC 220-70. In PSP's years, they averaged over their points per game average (31.5) both years. In 2005 and 2006 (I have no idea who the QB was then), they also averaged over their seven year PPG average. The two PSP years only averaged six points more per game than the 2005-2006 time period. Overall, yes, the PSP years are better if you look at points, but it also shows without him they have been able to score points (and a lot of them) over the years and in a two consecutive year time period. The most points the MAC scored against them was 21 in 2004 when Marshall was still a somewhat good program. tOSU only scored under that total once in 2007 against UofA. The MAC has averaged 10 points per game during this seven year period.

Herron may leave for the NFL. His stock will never be higher. He will be a late round pick either way. Rod Smith is a complete stud. He is being described as a better version of Beanie Wells. If Boom stays it may hurt his draft status, especially if he becomes a backup. I agree that PSP, I love that, can't be replaced that quickly. However, Boom can be replaced and probably by someone better. LT is more of a concern for most. Mike Adams is a 1st round pick next year if he keeps developing. He will miss the first 5 games too. That one hurts more.

(S. Holmes won that game by himself against Marshall) I'm not trying to argue anything, just making lies with stats to try to give myself some kind of hope come September. I wish we weren't playing them this year. Nothing will start my year off worse than losing to them. My dislike for that business grows everyday when I read about the honks that support them.
