  1. Since the 2002 win over Can't was a conference game, and of course against a pretty poor foe at that (LO had it made in those wagon wheel years), it got me to wondering when was the last time the Zips won a NON-conference game on the road by more than 20 points. Well it's only happened twice in their D-1A/FBS history. The first time was in 1990, once again when then whipped their Portage County rivals by 38-10. The Zips were not yet in the MAC, so all D1-A opponents were non-conference at the time. The other time was in 1993 when UA went to old Veterans Stadium (I still recall Frenchy harping about the seams in the Astroturf) and beat the Temple Owls by 31-7. So yeah this win over the Cajuns was nearly unprecedented.

  2. Wow JohnnyZip....I had completely forgotten that all of those games against the NY teams were the same year. That mega-overtime final game at the Rubber Bowl against Buffalo will never be forgotten. I think the Old Bowl was not ready to give up the Zips. I'm glad you got to go to Syracuse for that game. That's one road game that I am sorry I missed, along with the win at NC State. Fortunately, I didn't miss the Pitt game last year.

  3. They were certainly both nice wins Skip (I made it to Syracuse so that was particularly pleasing), but unfortunately, as previously documented on ZnO, we couldn't pull off the Empire State Triumvirate that year.

  4. In addition to Dr. Z's theory, I think Chapman is probably one of the best athletes on the team. An the staff wanted the ball in the hands of our best athlete as much as possible. You could cut Chapman a little slack in the first two games due to the level of competition and the weather. But there was no excuse for floundering against Savannah State. Kudos to the staff for pulling the plug as soon as they did. And for letting Woodson atone for the early INT. Chapman passes the eyeball test. Woodson's pudgy. Coaches at any level always seem to gravitate towards trying to develop a "sculpted" kid over a pudgy one. Even if the pudgy one wins. Way too much credence is given to 40 yard dash times vs. production. Even in the NFL. I'm sure Woodson's crippling 2014 INTs have surely taken also some time to fade from the staff's memory. I couldn't have imagined starting him vs. OU or Pitt, regardless of how good a summer camp he had. If Woodson gets time to throw, he really looks deadly. With an extra second or two, our WR's can get some separation, and he can sling it on-the-money. Our air-attack has potentially ascended from the outhouse, to the penthouse. Pohl's one hard lick away from moving on to Lot 9 for game days. And Chapman flat-out isn't ready...and may never be @ QB. Who'da thunk Woodson would be the difference between a bowl-eligible season, and 3-9? But he is. Beat Ohio!

  5. Here are four pre snap alignments of successful plays last Saturday night. Woodson runs off tackle for a 38 yard gain. Watch here. Woodson pass, to Wolf for 41 yards. Watch here. Woodson beats a blitz (and takes a hit as he throws) as Jerome Lane beats his man one on one and takes it to the house. Watch here. Hundley run for 11 yds for a TD. Watch here.
