  1. Good question, LZip. The only thing I can think of is that he was academically ineligible as a sophomore & missed his sophomore year. He had a really good junior year, and is having a fantastic senior year. Maybe academic issues scared some schools off? Maybe he really hit the radar late due to not playing as a soph? But lots of sophomores don't see the field regardless of whether they're academically eligible or not and by the time they're seniors all the college coaches know about them. Maybe Marquise didn't attend any summer camps? Physically speaking he doesn't stick out - he's only 5'10", 180. But he's not small either. I really have no idea, but watching him play you can instantly tell he's on another level from high school kids.

  2. I would hope that isn't the case. Loser's mentality. If you want to consider yourself a contender in the MAC, you shouldn't be afraid to compete with anybody.

  3. Anybody else recognize the effort of true freshman Alvin Davis? What a great game. Second on the team in tackles, tied in first with one pass defended. I'm not sure I have seen a smaller guy on an Akron defense make such an impact. That open field tackle he made on the RB when he sent him skyward was awesome. His defended pass was at the goal line on the tight end!?!?

  4. This was our 6th consecutive MAC win; first time in program history. http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/university-of-akron-football-backup-quarterback-tra-von-chapman-leads-zips-to-35-13-win-over-miami-redhawks-1.717864

  5. 1 penalty for 5 yards, total today. We converted on 2/3 turnovers. I hope Tommy is back. Chapman played well, but against better team, there would have been interceptions. We need a better connection between QB and WRs to compete against WMU. That being said, we won't be the same team without JoJo. But, who knows, maybe we will have Warren Ball back next week. The defense had another chance to improve today. Let's hope they can play well enough to give the offense a chance to win it next week.

  6. Over the past 12 years, Summit County has produced a ton of RB talent. Off the top of my head: Tyrell Sutton, Hoban: Northwestern, NFL (Mr. Football) Beanie Wells, Garfield: Ohio State, NFL Antonio Pittman, Buchtel: Ohio State, NFL Delone Carter, Copley: Syracuse, NFL (Mr. Football) Bryan Williams, Buchtel: Akron Jordan Mabin, Nordonia: Northwestern, NFL rosters (Mabin played DB in college but was/still is one of the all-time leading rushers in OHSAA history) Tyson Gulley, Garfield: Syracuse Aregeros Turner, Copley: Northern Illinois Vince Lockett, St. Vincent-St. Mary: Akron (Was a RB in high school) Add in the five this year and that's at least 12 FBS running backs since Sutton graduated in 2004 (14 if you count Mabin and Lockett), and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple. BTW, I've talked to a couple people who follow Summit County football way more than I do who have said Marquise Bridges is the best of the bunch this year ... even above the Pitt-bound Sibley or Michigan State-bound Bridges.

  7. Was able to attend the East -vs- Ellet game last night and saw two juniors I really hope we're recruiting. The first is Daishawn Brimage. Little brother of future Zip DeAndre. "Little" as in both younger and smaller. Lol. DeAndre is 6-1, 265 and plays DL. His little brother plays safety/WR & is "only" 6-1, 195. Lol. Great size for a WR/S. He's muscular, athletic & fast. He had 1 INT last night and returned a kickoff for a 80 yard TD. He's a great looking athlete, who probably isn't going to ever put up a lot of stats at WR just because East is a run-oriented team and East's QB isn't the best passer in the world. And speaking of East being a run-oriented team, there will by no means be a drop off in East's RB department next year - even after stellar RB and future Zip Jemarulin Suggs graduates. The second player I hope the Zips are looking at is RB Devanier Floyd. This kid is a beast!! He's 5'9", 200 lbs. & fast with a mean streak (much like Suggs). This guy, even with weight like that, is fast to the edge & has breakaway speed. Great looking RB who's totally under the radar right now because of Suggs getting most of the carries. This buck's gonna blow up next year, I guarantee.
