  1. I can't remember if I have ever shared the link before, but there is a Facebook page called Akron Rubber Bowl Memories that has some fantastic images posted. Check it out. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1467742330193691/?fref=nf

  2. I like the job Terry is doing, but I would prefer that he be more like a riverboat gambler and less like an evangelical minister. It's right that he is trying to make good men out of his players, but in games like Iowa State we need to go all in and take risks to win. Being conservative and running the same plays in games when you are somewhat outmatched will produce a loss, unless the other team is just having an overall bad day. Practice a plan B set of plays and don't just chart it up at half. Additionally, I don't like to hear comments similar to what Amato said before Penn State. I heard on a pregame discussion that Chuck joked with our AD saying to let him know when the check is in hand so he could put put in our reserves. I like Chuck too, but never say this stuff as it gets around and does no good. Anyhow, I'm with Terry and his staff. Is is just me or does he send the message that he wants to win in his old stomping grounds (West Virginia - Marshall and Pitt)? Maybe we can look to an all in OOC effort in Alabama this week. This brings me to my final criticism in that I don't want to just focus on MAC games. Terry seems to send this message about conference games, but he should try to win them all and not just pick up the check.

  3. I loved to watch him play, and got to know his family a little while he was at Akron and he and his brother were playing for Mentor High School. Plus - I loved to say his name! After you got the rhythm to it, it just rolled off your tongue. Was real glad when he transferred from Illinois-Chicago. Twice an All-American, a MAC Player of the Year. Maybe will be in the Akron Hall of Fame some day?

  4. Skip, We live in a strange time right now. On one hand, I think you have a pc culture gone crazy and in the other hand you have a resistance movement being non-pc for the sake of being non-pc. The pc agenda has seeped into every aspect of our society. Everything is offensive to somebody somewhere. It is quasi-censorship. It used to be that the left said "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it". No one is saying that anymore. Polarized America wants to silence opposing views. It is the opposite of the tolerance doctrine that is preached to us everyday. Strange days, indeed. Most peculiar, mama.

  6. Donnell Alexander and his whole 494 yards of rushing that year does not belong in the same sentence as the others.. Hundley was the feature back that year and almost got to 1000. Let's hope this season ends the same way it did when this thread was started.

  7. I believe that most of the schedule is done year to year and all by the coaches. Some match ups might be in the works in advance, but I think most of it solidifies throughout the spring and is finalized in late spring. I think what makes it look haphazard is the willingness (or not) of other teams to do a home and away. For example, Wake Forest has shown a willingness to come to Akron; UNC has not. Nice to schedule ACC opponents who are relatively close and often bring an RPI boost, but not at the expense of always playing at their place. I think the western swings are okay as a weekend set; the idea of UVU on Friday and Denver on Monday was well planned, but then having to sparsely schedule the next few doesn't seem so good. I suspect the Washington match on Friday was meant to be an "Akron Tournament" with a Friday/Sunday or Friday/Monday game set, but they may have had issues getting 3 other quality teams in that time period. Then U@B dropped mens soccer, and SIUE was added late to the MAC. That may have had some effect on ability to shuffle out-of-conference games.

  8. What exactly do you like? I agree with your examples and to me it appears that he doesn't really care to win. There are far too many complacent fans that say "oh, Akron has never been good. At least we are almost .500 most of the time. I am happy. Remember how bad we were before he got here? He sure is recruiting a lot of local guys. That is great! Maybe their family and friends will come watch. Heck, maybe next year we can even make the potato chip and dip bowl". We sound like a high school fan base and a bad one at that. The guy is on cruise control with zero urgency to win. Keener said it best... "does the guy wear a mask when he gets his paycheck?"

  9. That pic made me instantly think of another undersized 57 that could play. . .

  10. • We have not been able to run when a team commits to stopping the run right now. Like I noted before, the team went from 11 to 10 personnel in the game when they decided to try to pass more. (My thought: I would come out early in 10 personnel this week) • Guiser in concussion protocol. They challenged the Davis targeting penalty, but not even sure they can do it. • Nick Johns wants to play football. May not play, cut his foot on glass. He is working with TE's and WR. Playing on all special teams. • We have to get somebody through to get pressure on the QB. Sampson come in and gave some late last week. Davis, Ward or Moore need to step up. • Tommy's Int was a play put in at half time that wasn't ripped enough. Tommy is not the reason we lost. •Wolf should be ready to go this week. • Nate Stewart got all the spring first team reps and got hurt. (side note: I got to see a the scrimmage before he got hurt, and he was catching everything thrown his way. You can't make a lot of observations from a scrimmage, but that did make an early impression on me)

  11. I look for the OL to protect better, and our WR's to get better separation(Bickley & Wolf back in action). I think 34 may add to those receiving yds. 3 sacks is a low bar. I think we will see 5 in their backfield a lot this week. I look for big plays to make the difference. Zips win a close one!

  12. Yep, this is basically what coach said at the beginning of the year. Paraphrasing "we are going to have to rely on our running game early in the year until we find out who is going to fill the holes left by Natson and Lane in the passing game" I don't think we have seen our best passing game of the year yet.

  14. Yeah, I guess that is what I did. Sorry about that. Frankly, I was a little surprised by the immediate reaction. Personally, I just enjoyed us playing a decent game and winning the second half (which we haven't done very much). I understand that the coaches want to keep us moving forward, but I thought that would come this week. As a diehard fan of a frequent 3-win team, I just wanted to enjoy it for 24 hours or so.

  15. Woodson is probably not the top area of concern for the Zips but he gets the most attention because of his position. The departure of Natson and Lane is a gaping hole to fill and there is no one on the roster that can hold a candle to those two guys. Lane's talent was really blossoming and JoJo was the biggest playmaker on offense since. . .Who? It goes back some years! We have currently whiffed on WR recruits and transfers. I have to wonder if the NC State guys would have made a difference. The story of the Zips in the Bowden years has been Jatavis Brown and the transfers that panned out. The reason why the Zips went 8-5 once is because of Jamal Marcus, Cody Grice, Rodney Coe, SeVon Pittman, Dylan Evans, Jatavis Brown and Daryl Monroe. Period. That's a 100 year storm. It's never happening again. We play in the MAC and I am not going to ever be happy until we have a balls out, tempo, score as much as you can track meet out there on the field. Bowden always saying how he wants the Zips to be known for their defense shows how out to lunch he is. You have to recruit well for defense. It's see ball, hit ball. No amount of scheming is going to make up for lack of talent. This is basic $hit!

  17. Sad that Sinisa did not have a more impactful -- and top-flight career as a pro. I really expected him to be at least a semi-star when he arrived in MLS. Coincidental that I met a Red Bulls fan at the USMNT game vs Honduras watch with AO Honolulu who knew Sinisa well.

  18. I worry about playing Western Michigan on the road 4 days after traveling to play a very good Syracuse team I worry about playing Bowling Green 4 days after playing current #1 Notre Dame this team right now is very weak in the midfield....Midfielders do a ton of running and they will get tired and this will lead to bad passes schedule is not good for this team

  20. ^^ I can relate, Balsy. While I think of myself as a realist and not a Bowden apologist or whatever, I would assume I am more patient than the old grumps is because the only ever Zips football I've ever known is 1-11 and 1-11. Then again, football before that wasn't anything to brag about either.

  22. I agree the bashing is uncalled for as he was assuredly dealing with his own issues and helping other people in the aftermath of the hurricane. What makes you think Jason Taylor wants to meet and great a bunch of Joe Akrons or that a bunch of Joe Akrons want to meet and great with him? The University had a private party for him at the stadium. You're kidding yourself if you think "the faithful" would have filled anything. Somebody on here had trouble getting 6 people to fill a table for an event. We have some good die hards, but in general our fan base sucks. This is nothing new.
