My guess: I'm not claiming this is the case here, but since early signing came into existence I have seen several cases where the academic status of a CC recruit is not known until shortly after the first early signing date and once the status becomes positive (not necessarily a guarantee he will qualify) the school giving the kid a chance lets him sign.

Only three other field players besides DeAndre have started more than 30 games in a season (Geoff Cameron, Clint Dempsey x2 and Brian McBride x2). ... ... To me it is unreal how undervalued his accomplishments are. Regardless, he’ll continue to be a polarizing figure for his country. He’s a great player and with Reggie Cannon and Sergiño Dest pushing him at the right back position for the national team will be challenged for years to come. For club he’s battled for his career and doing some amazing things in the top flight league in the world. Cheers to DeAndre Yedlin as he hopefully rings in the new year with a century in the Premier League.
