  1. Does a bruised shoulder typically take this long to heal or is there potentially a more significant injury we are not aware of? Just seems strange for Woodson to miss so much time when he apparently he was close enough to be healthy vs. Kent to be game time decision. Not that I'm questioning the medical staff or Woodson desire to play. Just confused about this situation.
  2. There were like a dozen schools they interviewed. There was only a handful of serious contenders and none of those teams you mentioned were realistically getting in.
  3. I expected to lose to WMU by 10-20 points, not be shutout and lose by 41. Injuries or not that was a gut-wrenching blow.
  4. I missed this game because I prioritized Indians ALCS game ahead of it. My intentions were to watch the replay on watchespn, but given the outcome I think it's just best to forget about that game and move onto the next one.
  5. I'm going to guess the Indians 4:08PM game is going to discourage a lot of students and fans from going.
  6. He has some eligibility left, right?
  7. I imagine we will see an uptick in traveling fans for this game.
  8. Fans of other schools have to deal with a 4 hour game as well. Akron isnt at liberty to shorten games to 8 minute quarters and eliminate tv timeouts. Why fret over something the school has 0 control over?
  9. Sure fewer and fewer people are staying for a 4 hour game, but that is a universal problem throughout college football, not specific to Akron. The problem at Akron isn't people show up then leave after the end of the 3rd quarter. Its that they aren't showing up to begin with.
  10. Students can get in for free and they still never fill up the student section. I'd venture to guess the time committment is a bigger deterrent than cost. People pay $10 for a movie, $80 for a Browns game, $30 for an Indians, and drive 2 hours to pay $70 for Buckeye nosebleeds. If people felt a Zips game would entertain them for 4+ hours, they would pay the $15. If we can improve the gameday atmosphere people will come.
  11. I'm going to stick with the under, but will up my win total to 8 instead of the 6-7 that I previously quoted. I still have us losing to WMU and Toledo so to get to 9 wins we'd have to beat everyone else, including a bowl team tbd. I feel we are capable of getting to 9, but there is no margin for error.
  12. I'd be surprised if there isn't at least 1 5-7 team that goes bowling. 80/128 teams go bowling and I'm counting 31 teams that have already lost 4 games and see a lot of other teams that are 2-3. There are also numerous P5 teams that are 3-3 by playing easy OOC schedules, but now have to play their loaded in conference schedule.
  13. I was at a friends wedding Saturday and haven't seen the game yet. Anyone know where Woodson's at in his recovery? I kind of expected him to play since he was medically cleared and was ruled out last minute vs Kent. Were they being precautious sitting him out vs Miami thinking they didn't need him or is he still not ready to play?
  14. I thought the University has done a great job of trying to market the team this year. Cleveland sports fans seem to be slow to jump on bandwagons. Indians led the AL Central for 75% of the season yet finished 28th in attendance. I'd expect an uptick next season though. To really boost announced attendance, we need to boost season ticket sales. I'm not sure what our season ticket base is, but it has to be incredibly small. I'd expect the number of STH to increase each season as long as the team keeps winning. If the goal is to average 15k, we probably need somewhere in the neighborhood of 9k-10k STH with the students, opposing fans, and Joe Akron accounting for the remaining 5k-6k per game.
  15. Announced attendance and butts in seats are 2 entirely different things. With it being homecoming weekend, I'll say announced attendance will be between 15k-17k.
  16. He averaged 11.8ppg on .377 shooting. If he got his fg % to .400 he'd be around 12.5ppg. Between Reggie and Jake, Akron lost 14.5 attempts per game. I don't expect any 1 or 2 players to absorb all those attempts and instead expect them to be distributed throughout the rotation. Antino definitely can get to 15ppg by doing a better job of drawing contact and getting to the line and by just becoming a slightly more efficient scorer. Our fast break offense was pretty much non existent last season. We should be more athletic this season which hopefully will generate more transition offense opportunities. Antino would benefit more than anyone if this becomes the case.
  17. Got this email yesterday and finally got around to reading it. Son of a bitch please take my money. It's been stated already, but can we just go ahead and get rid of that interim title? This guy is making me proud to be a Zip. Dear Kenneth, With Homecoming at The University of Akron this week (Saturday, Oct. 8), I thought that it would be an ideal time to provide you with a brief update of the first three months of my interim presidency. (Naturally, we hope that you can join us for Homecoming. Click here for details.) Also, I wanted to respond to the question that I hear the most from our alumni base and supporters – "Please let me know what I can do to help UA." OUTREACH AND EXCITEMENT First, our progress is very encouraging. On campus, there is a definite air of optimism and renewed spirit. The greater community continues to generally express its enthusiastic support for UA. Media coverage has predominantly focused on the accomplishments of our students, faculty, and alumni. We are even attracting more community members to our on-campus events – though we would naturally love to see more (additional information is in the bullet points below). Every week, I make it a point to connect with students, faculty, and staff as well as our supporters, alumni, members of industry, and government officials at the local and state levels. At the same time, every week I pack boxes of Zippy cookies into my car and present them to local high school principals and guidance counselors when I visit their schools to discuss how UA can better assist our high schools and their students. At my present pace, I will visit more than 50 high schools this semester alone. This semester and next, I will also be addressing high school students across the region. Most recently, I spoke to freshmen and sophomores at Firestone High School, and will be addressing the entire student body at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School next week. Fortunately, faculty members have joined me in visiting high schools and sharing their specific expertise in the schools’ classrooms. Our admissions and financial counselors are actively visiting schools to explain college preparation, financial aid opportunities, the enrollment process, and related topics to students and parents. Fall semester has been very exciting. ENROLLMENT Our fall enrollment is 8% less than in Fall 2015. Although this presents a substantial financial challenge for us, we were able to reverse an even steeper decline due to a heroic effort by our Admissions team and others. In fact, in the two months prior to Sept. 13, we had a 4.3% uptick in overall enrollment. Two principal factors combined for much of the decline: One of our largest classes in recent years graduated in 2015-16, and new freshman enrollment fell sharply this fall to 3,442. There are several noteworthy aspects to that new freshmen enrollment: The average GPA was 3.44, the highest average GPA in UA’s history for this cohort, and the classes’ average ACT score of 23.3 remains the same as fall 2015 cohort. The percentage of minority students in the entering freshman class increased to 25.1% from 23.1% last year, and the percentage of out-of-state entering freshman students increased to 9.3%, from 5.7% in comparison with two years ago. As we look to rebound from the enrollment decrease, we will be focusing substantial energy on retention and recruitment of students. All seem willing to contribute to improving student success. We will also need to tighten our belt and move forward in a fiscally prudent manner both internally and externally. I continue to hold town hall meetings with our colleges and departments to discuss our situation and invite input. HOW CAN I HELP? Understanding the rich heritage of the University together with the immediate challenges before us, alumni and friends of the University constantly ask, “How can we help?” There are many ways you can contribute, and you might be surprised by their simplicity and ease. The most effective way for you to help students succeed is by giving to our scholarship fund. Your contribution can literally make the difference between a student dropping out or continuing on to graduation. Encourage your elected officials to find every way possible to support UA as we look to bounce back from a period of turbulence. More than ever, we need governmental leaders to work with the University, support our mission, and assist us on all fronts. We all benefit when UA is strong and vibrant. I want to repeat that I am very encouraged and optimistic about our future. The revitalized spirit shown throughout the campus and community is deeply inspiring. I am more convinced than ever that this extended University of Akron family can accomplish any task it unites behind. Thank you for your continuing support. Sincerely, Matthew J. Wilson Interim President
  18. I agree - I still see them getting to 6 wins and making a bowl game, which would still be a good season for them.
  19. I still think this team will go only as far as Big Dog leads them. I can't see anyone taking Team MVP away from him barring injury.
  20. I think Antino is another player that has the chance to mature and pick up some of that offense lost by Reggie and Jake. It almost seemed at times he tried to do too much during crucial moments of close games. He'd attack the basket recklessly or put up an ill-advised 3 instead of taking what the defense gave him.
  21. As Bowden pointed there is a lot to be excited for in this offense as the O-line continues to progress both this year and next. This season could very well end up being Akron's best offensive year when everything is all said and done and it's crazy to think they could even be better next season. Sure they lose Natson, but they are amassing quite the stable of receivers.
  22. The Zips first official practice of the season has commenced. Figured it was as good of a time as any to get discussion started. What's your expectations for the season? What games are you looking forward too? What players do you expect to have breakout years? http://gozips.com/sports/mbkb/2016-17/releases/20161003qkrlb1
  23. Yeah, I quit reading as soon as I saw this. They clearly haven't watched the Zips play this season nor did a simple google search to see the Zips are conceding 37.6 ppg, which is tied for 112th in the nation. Edit: I guess compared to BGSU they are "good".
  24. If tackling was their only problem, the defense would be fixable. They are just so undisciplined. There are countless times this season where a Zips LB got caught eyeing the QB in the backfield only to have a RB come out of the backfield and run right past him. We have been eaten alive on misdirection plays. A lot of this can hopefully be fixed with time and experience, but it is incredibly frustrating to see the same mistakes play after play; week after week. Edit: If we can't become a lock down D, we need to find ways to create turnovers.
