Losing Jacobs for a half is still a big break for the Zips. He's been their best player in Cleveland thus far and for the season he's #2 in scoring and #1 in rebounding for Kent. It would be nice if the Zips could capitalize early.

Very nice incoming freshman class but they'll be freshman...hard to see them being immediate impact players. I'd expect Boals to go after a couple of topflight transfers and edge out a couple of underperformers, including Ben Roderick, who started. We didn't have our starting center, Dwight Wilson, this year, so hopefully he'll be back in form after a year lost to an acl. My question for tonight is whether a bigger program comes after the winning coach.
I don't see it happening unless the winning team goes on and makes some noise in the tourney.

Carry hasn't even played good these past two games. Kent has looked a lot less 1 dimensional in these Cleveland games.

And to keep the theme going for CBS sports tonight, I'd like another triple overtime game in MAC semifinal number two, please
Looks like we had the same idea lol

I'm cheering for this Ohio - Kent game to go to triple OT like that UAB -Mid Tenn game

Anyone know of good ticket deals for tomorrow's game?

Won't happen, though I think any of the top 5 could knock somebody off. We do need to somehow work together as a conference to get this done though. That would be huge for the conference.
Bids are awarded to teams, not conferences. Buffalo would have been an at-large a few years ago, but they went on to win the tournament. In order for the MAC to get an at-large another Buffalo would need to emerge and said team would need to get upset in the tournament

Not counting on it but the MAC could be a 2 bid conference now.
Not happening, Toledo resume isn't that good. They came in I believe #64 in NET, which is going to take a hit losing to Akron. They also didn't beat anyone in the top 50 this year. Better MAC teams have been passed over.

Playing to not lose is going to make us lose. We're having to force up contested shots at the buzzer. We need to move the ball around to get better looks. This is only a 2 possession game with lots of time left.
-
Ali had an open 3 there. Not sure why he didn't shoot it. We need to make Toledo pay when the decide to triple team Freeman otherwise they will keep doing it.
-
If you take out Dawson, Akron is shooting 9/39 (.231) from the field and 0-12 from 3. That's just not going to get it done. Dawson carried this team as far as she could.

I think if we win tonight and Kent beats OU we will at least have a strong possibility of getting an NIT bid.
Our NET ranking is #143. We won't even be in the discussion for an NIT bid.

Here's hoping our friends in Muncie get their new coach. (not that I wouldn't be happy if they kept Whitford a few more years)
Ball State should be so much better than they are. There is so much high school basketball talent that comes out of Indiana and Ball State still has a pretty decent basketball fan base despite being pretty mediocre under Whitford. The right guy could easily make them competitive.

Why do I feel like Buffalo wins it with a 3?
Just want the Zips to have a shot to win it.
My guess is Buffalo gets a put back off of a miss

Castaneda has disappeared in the second half. We will need him down the stretch.
-
CMU up 71-70
EDIT: 20 seconds left, but Toledo has the ball

The MAC office needs to step in and talk to the members about scheduling out of conference.
Maybe the MAC needs to pair up with a similar conference or few similar conferences for a scheduling arrangement or “conference challenge” type thing.
The Zips seem to do well with the neutral floor tournaments they get into but also seem to play a lot of teams in the bottom of Division 1 (this year I do like that they got games at Ohio State and Wright State)... I am not saying I want them to schedule an impossible gauntlet, just instead of teams ranked 335 out of 358, why not teams ranked 260 and more home and home contracts that go for 2-4 years?
This is also exactly why they need to bring back a Bracketbusters type of event.
Given how far the MAC has fallen that would be the OVC or Summit based off the numbers @RowdyZip presented. That's still going to be a lot of garbage opponents.

This is why not scheduling those cupcakes OOC is such a big deal.
How much of this is the West being exposed by having to play the East teams more with no divisions?
They're only playing the East teams 2-3 more times. The West teams have just decided to quit funding their basketball programs. Bates was making like 120k before he was fired. That's about half the amount of money Horizon league teams pay their coaches. You get what you pay for.
Edit: The MAC West teams use to be good enough that they could pad their win totals beating cupcakes OOC. Now those teams are the cupcakes.

Brief post-regular season NET rankings. Took a look at conference rankings by AVERAGE and MEDIAN NET rankings. The MAC comes in at 20th (of 32) in Average NET, and 25th of 32 in MEDIAN Net, reflecting how considerably bottom-heavy the conference is. All of the P5 teams have average AND median NET rankings that are sub-100. I do believe the NCAA finally has a satisfactory metric now to justify exclusions of 99% of Mid-Major teams that may deserve an at-large bid.
How much the MAC has fallen is insane. The 2-3 years prior to covid the MAC was hovering around 10-12 range. Now over half the league is those same cupcakes that we complained about scheduling for home OOC games...

What are we thinking for All-MAC?
My 1st team prediction will be:
Sears
Carry
Rollins
J. Williams
Freeman
POY: Carry
FOY: Sparks
COY: Pinky ( 🤮 )
6th man: Santiago
DPOY: To be honest, no idea. Maybe Jacobs from Kent?
I would think Jacobs or Freeman is DPOY. Freeman is 2nd in the MAC in blocks and 1st in rebounds.

It's almost like less people have covid now than they did this winter. Anyway, not like it was actually enforced
Some people just like to look for things to complain about. I only made it to a couple games this year. I had to wear a mask all of maybe 2 minutes each game I attended. Not really worth complaining about

As am I. Indeed it isn't our job, but what exactly are we complaining about here? What specifically do you think could improve and what is the end goal with this improved marketing? I suspect the best way to get to the end goal is simply winning, something we've never really done in a meaningful way for revenue sports outside of soccer, and I'd guess the soccer program has a respectable attendance compared to the rest of the country.
If having a successful marketing campaign was a substantial part of putting asses in seats in college sports and realistically doable, I'd suspect there would be a much bigger emphasis on it across college sports as it would make universities a lot of money.
While I do agree people like to complain and don't want to offer real solutions, I do feel there have been some ideas that have been presented in the past. For example, people have been saying for years that the JAR should sell alcohol. Why did Akron have to wait until a pandemic wiped out 30%-40%, maybe more, of season ticket holders to make that small change?
I do agree there is no simple solutions. If there was then other schools like Bowling Green, Kent, Miami (OH) would have found it. One can argue Akrons leadership has been incompetent, but literally all Midwestern non-big 10 schools are struggling so it's not just an Akron problem.

Zips MAC Tournament- 2022
in Akron Zips Basketball

Kent's 1st 8 points all 2nd chance points. We have to do a better job securing rebounds.
