As I was saying...

Zips are playing terrible and are up by 9 on the road at halftime.
I know....and right on the point spread. playing terrible is the operable phrase, though. But we've been down this road before.

You can look at how Kent, Toledo, Ball State, and Ohio are rolling tonight and this gets really depressing. Trust the process?

I guess it's time to face the music.

I can't remember another time going into a game against an opponent the Zips previously beat by an insane margin and being worried about a letdown. I'm not sure if that's more an indictment of EMU's effort at the JAR and overall or Akron's Malaise.
Imagine the "angst and dread" if the Zips were landing in DeKalb right about now.

1. WBB has the 3rd highest budget overall only behind football and MBB. It's even higher than MSOC.
2. WBB has a FT strenght coach. Name one team in the MAC with a dedicated Strength Coach Full time for WBB only. Not shared with other sports.
3. WBB has shelled out 10k for money games for teams to play us.
4. WBB charters on flights in league when most teams are riding the bus.
These are just a few of the things that show the level of support for WBB from Athletics administration at Akron.
well, that should help in attracting a new coach...if it comes to that.

It's been by design for me. Definitely needed to take a step back before that s*** really turns up in a couple weeks. Started to feel a bit too much like the KD days of just winning for the sake of winning. As Groce says, winning can be a darn good deodorant, and winning has covered up some pretty crappy defense at times during MAC play. After the Kent game, the Zips had the top rated defense in league play. They hold that crown no longer. They are now rated #3 in offense and #2 in defense. The sky is not falling, and I'm hoping the reality check has hit this program like a truck.
A trip to Ypsilanti was the proper medicine to spark the longest winning streak to end a season in program history last year. I don't think we'll win out, but some nice roadkill always gets the hopes up. The top of the league will be cheering for the Zips tonight, as nobody wants to see EMU in an NBA arena in March. Go Zips!
happy valentine's day. gee, bodily function and odor seems to be the theme of the day. nice. I'm with LoyalZip as usual. Winning for the sake of winning doesn't mean much when the only true goal is to win the MAC tournament. It may put a few more people in the seats but...well, we know the rest. I'm not even that worried about the seeding. This is wide open. As for tonight, I was 100% indifferent going into EMU last year and had given my tickets away to that home NIU game. Don't expect much this evening and will check on the score every 30 minutes. I have my "John's Next Endeavor" and "Has Groce Lost the Team?" threads ready to go at a moment's notice.

Agreed that Coach Groce doesn't get credit for Freeman. Has anyone ever been so lucky? Serious question without an ounce of hyperbole.
I mentioned in another thread that succeeding at this level of coaching requires a decent amount of luck.

For those of us who have been on this board for a long time, we always used to drool over the great guards in the MAC and wonder, why cant KD and Akron find these players and get them to Akron. Well, with the play of LCJ and X, we have had the best guards in the league 4 of the past 5 years. Groce has an eye for guard talent. Meanwhile, KD seemed to have an eye great for centers and big men such as Big Dog, Zeke, and Treadwell. (Groce did not recruit Freeman, he walked in from the cafeteria).
Good conversation starter. Groce may be able to recruit and/build a more cohesive unit. Abreu and Noah, before felony and injury, were pretty good. Having LCJ or X at the helm in 2016 and 2017 would have been a game-changer.

But agree with above, they still keep hanging in there despite terrible numbers of turnovers. They had a chance anyway.

Here's the tourney simulator.

Frankly, doesn't matter to me who plays whom in what round. Trivia: in 2021, Ohio (at #5 took out #4 Kent State, #1 Toledo, and #2 Buffalo. In 2022, Akron did the same in reverse: Akron as #4 took out Buffalo, Toledo #1, and Kent #2.
This is what I came up with.

I’m not sure how they kept it so close with that many turnovers, but the Zips looked the part today. First time in a while. Hopefully getting back on track.
Just get to Cleveland. Right?

Groce pretty well sums it up in the Beacon article-
“We have got to get better on defense,” UA coach John Groce said. “Our defensive numbers have been putrid for about the last five or six games other than the Kent game. We have got to be a lot better on that end of the floor.”
their offensive #s were fine. But even if they made a few more FTs that wasn't going to make the difference. of course, why do the other teams win with similarly lax defense?
-
And the shady Chris Jans was their coach last year. I'm sure he left a clean and respectable program. Coach Heiar comes from LSU which is also a program beyond reproach.
-
Zips have the roughest road to finish the season, having Kent and Toledo on the road and Ball State at home, followed by Ball State who has Toledo and Kent at home with a stop in Akron. Zips will be the 4th or 5th seed again...maybe make it up to #3 if Ball State stumbles and Zips pick up an away game against Toledo or Kent. But that seems unlikely.

We need to clean up some defensive breakdowns and the supporting cast needs to step up more. But other than that I’m alright with burning the tape. Not our night.
That's what is great about CBS games. They don't live for months in the ESPN cloud.

Freeman is turning over the ball way too much.
day dreaming?
It's been a long season, and he and X carry the team. I'm not rationalizing but if the Zips were rolling right now, I would be wondering when they were going to hit the wall. They get an extra day before EMU. Give the guys some rest.

Zips won a few games this year because of a serious advantage at the FT line. That's been reversed these last two games. They will fix that by Cleveland.

No reason to overreact to single wins and losses. It's a long season. They'll be fine.
Agree, I'm joking around for the most part. Read the WMU and NIU threads from last season. Yikes.
