  1. I'm surprised by the responses so far, figured there'd be more negatives.  I can't seem to find any, except that you guys turned skip-zip's smile into a frown.  I agree on the "if we've gotta play mid-week Thursday's the best night" front.  I just wish we had 6 home games...don't know why it makes a big difference.  We can drive to Can't to see the Wagon Wheel game, and the EMU game is only 3 hours away.  I was just hoping 6 games might bring a better chance of casual observers coming to game day.  Wishful thinking I know....

  2. Not much to do on campus as far as sports were concerned last night, but the track and field team hosted Buffalo and Youngstown State at the Zips Invitational with a week to go until MACs.  Low keyed affair for the most part, but that gave the underclassmen and "second teamers" a chance to perform against their previous best efforts and it seemed like a dozen or more athletes rang toe cowbell signifying new PRs.  Looking at rankings for the top Zips in the MAC this indoor season, I'd be surprised with a better-than-third-place performance for the men as well as the women, with Eastern and Kent probably going 1-2 on both sides.  But the Zips are always up for the challenge, and a few surprises would help.  Phip Jagers, the #1 discus thrower ever in the MAC was honored last night as the lone Senior from Indoors....but unfortunately there is no Discus indoors for the MAC.  But still....GO ZIPS!

  3. So, GoZips.com has an article on it about the Men's and Women's track teams being ranked Nationally.  Good for them.  However, don't expect much news from the post season.  As far as the NCAA Indoor Championships are concerned,  it will be a lonely group that goes.  Cody Stine has a shot at qualifying  for High Jump, he's at 7'1" now, #23, but has to hit 7' 2 1/2" right now by end of the MACs.  Matt Ludwig is a shoo-in for PV sitting #2 now and Lucy Bryan is as well, sitting #4.  Freshman Jenna Franz might have a shot at PV but must improve to 11' 11 3/4" (now at 13' 8 1/2") to make top 16 right now.  Jordan Latimer is at #11 in Long Jump and is probably safe, and Jackie Siefring is #3 in the Pentathalon, but is also #17 now in the LJ.  Slim pickins' after record number of Zips going last few seasons.....

  4. I am EXCITED!  I have seen Biros play for years, and have also caught Tojaga play in four different matches.  I am very impressed with both, and like Biro's' style.  Jared nailed it in his description of Colin on GoZips.com.  He will be a good fit wherever, andis a great 'tweener.  And two Portugese???  Two Joaos would be great, but if we got a half a Joao from each that would equal one Joao (I love to say Joao!!!)

  5. Wandered over to Stile after the B-ball game went south yesterday and caught some Track and Field action.  Disappointed to learn Kwads is out with an injury.  Talked with Jamal Baggett a little and said it wasn't serious but Smith was going to wait until Spring.  Don't know if that means track in the Spring or football, or both.  Also learned Letulli is not on the T & F squad this year, working in the weight room to be ready for football come Spring.

  6. After watching the debacle that was the Zips vs. Toledo basketball game yesterday, wandered into Stile Field House and watched the finals of the Akron Invitational Track meet.  A needed pick-me-up.  To say Coach Mitchell and staff have their hands full to rebuild this squad is fair.  Only a few bright spots, not as deep as past teams.  Lucy Bryan, who I referred to as a "beast" earlier was all of that yesterday setting a new school record in the Pole Vault.  Mackenzie Andrews had a solid win in the 800.  Cody Stine cleared 7' in his High Jump win.  Matt Ludwig took the men's Pole Vault, and is #2 in the nation at this point.  Abby Wilson is getting stronger int he throws and won the discus and the shot.  Phil Jagers won the discus and the weight throw.  Jackie Siefring won the pentathalon with the #2 best performance indoors in the nation this year.  All good stuff.  But not a lot of depth on this year's team which will probably cost them the MACs, atleast on the women's side.  Lots of youngsters, but that's okay.  This staff always "coaches 'em up" with the best of them.

And speaking of "minor" sports - the Swimming and Diving team got their first ever National NCAA ranking last week, breaking into the Top 25!  There is life near the JAR right now, just not in it!  :D

I go to Ray's Place a lot in the summer, but never in the winter. I know they had some sort of IPA 3 Flyods on tap this summer. I'm not an IPA fan, so it went in one ear, and out the other. They did have Old Speckled Hen on tap this summer. Probably my favorite english ale.

This Ray's list says it was updated 1/1/18, but I know they get new things weekly.

Hey there Doc...I found myself in Munster IN last night on business and found the 3 Floyds Brewhouse.  Wow!  Rather strange place but had a blast.  Obscure music all on vinyl, some decent pub food, and best of all some great beers.  First went with the Behemoth, a delightful Barley Wine with lots of hops and a caramel taste, pretty strong %.  Then went to a Yum Yum,  a solid paleale, and finished off the evening with a Lazersnake.  Hotel was half a mile away so the drive back was mercifully short.

Akron Zips men’s team beats Northern Illinois Huskies 82-67

    Published: January 20, 2018 - 6:40 PM | Updated: January 20, 2018 - 6:40 PM

The University of Akron men’s basketball team needed the game they played Saturday afternoon against Rhodes Arena against the Northern Illinois Huskies.

Behind four Zips (9-9, 2-4 in Mid-American Conference)  in double figures UA beat the Huskies (9-10, 2-4) 82-67and assumed control with 12:18 left in the first half and never looked back.

Gaurds Virshon Cotton and Malcolm Duvivier led the way for the Zips with 17 points each, followed by Daniel Utomi with 16 points. Guard Jimond Ivey added 10 rebounds to lead the team.

Dante Thorpe and Eugene German led the Huskies with 16 points each.

For the Zips it very well may have been their most complete game of the season as they played respectable defense and fund their offense.  UA outshot the Huskies 53 to 40 percent and connected on 15-of-31 three-point shots (48 percent) to NIU’s 4-of-15 (27 percent).

The Zips accomplished something that had been in short supply during the conference schedule.  They sprinted out of the gate against the Huskies. They found their offensive stroke early and connected often.

After the two teams exchanged scoring pleasantries flipping the lead six separate times during the first period, the Zips took control behind Duvivier and Cotton, who were often on the floor together. Each scored in double figures in the first half to give the Zips an offensive boost.

Tied at 11 with 12:18 left in the first period, the Zips outscored the Huskies 33-19 the rest of the way, connecting on 53 percent of three-pointers (9-of-17) in the frame to contribute to a 43-30 halftime lead after having led by as many as 17.

Oh my Freaking Gawd!!!!  This passes for journalism at the AKRON Beacon Journal????  WTF???  This had to have been written bya fourth grader!!!  Do they even employ an Editor???

This is sooo bad, on so many levels, first of all that it wasn't written by a real ABJ reporter,o r journalist, or whatever....

They make it so easy to hate them!!!    :puke:

  9. Well that really sucks.  We lost to the Golden Flashes, and Wagon Wheel points, in botht eh men's and the women's cometitions in a freakin' dual meet. And watching Coach Mitchell's post meet interview, he looks worried.  Evidently lots of guys and gals out with injury or sick, but he made it sound like he was semi-blaming the injuries and illnesses on the athletes not training right.  Okay, well the Akron Invitational is two weeks away...

  10. Posted on the Other Sports thread, but Kwadarrius was back on the track this past weekend at the Kentucky Invitational, running the 60 for the Zips in a time of 6.72 seconds, third fastest in program history....keep those wheels turning Kwads, should be a fun football season to look forward to.

  11. Zippys do well at U of Kentucky Invitational on weekend, with Matt Ludwig winning the pole vault, Lucy Bryan taking second in the PV, Mackenzie Andrews in 2nd in the 3K.  Kwadarius Smith was at 6.72 in the 60, 3rd fastest Zip time ever.  Andrews time was 2nd fastest in the nation this season, and Ludwig's vault 2nd best in nation as well.  Dual with Portage Community College this Friday at Kant State, Wagon Wheel points achievable.

I would just like to add to LRD’s post that Keith’s feelings were hurt by the comments made on this forum.  That was probably as big of a factor as anything in his leaving if the truth was known.  Oh, and the money.

So you are saying that a measley 10 to 20 guys/girls who post things on a forum made a coach leave a DI basketball program?  K92, what the heck?  If that's the case this guy was a real wack job....

Ha ha, that's awesome yet hearing it through the grapevine is a long way from it being "announced"...
