  1. I know it’s not the greatest program we’ve got, but after a dismal home opener, the WSOC team lost 1 nil to a solid Charlotte team, won on the road to Wolford, should have won a 2 - 2 draw with Indiana State and today scored SIX goals in a 6 nil win over Youngstown State, not the caliber of opps the MSOC play, but 6 goals none the less.  And freshman Sydney Worthy had a hat trick.  She looks to be a solid scoring threat to compliment Ashley Amato.  Erica Schrader added a goal and a pair of assists.  School record is 7 goals.  Won’t be home again till September 28, at which time this could be the highlight of their season, but at least it was an entertaining match.

Some yes, some no.  None of that, however, had anything to do with this conversation. So thanks for that insight.

Risk of injury and concussion is one thing.  Longterm affects including CTE is something entirely different right?

That's awesome, thanks for the info!  (and I'm not saying that sarcastically).  Though I doubt they, right now, discuss CTE.

You’re right Balsy, they don’t.  Just kinda the basics, but nothing really about repeat brain trauma.

I'm assuming most if not all leagues have some sort of warning system now where they hand out papers with the risks. We're in a lawsuit-happy society now, and to avoid negligent liability, that's pretty standard practice (again, I'm assuming).

In my limited experience geography-wise as a OHSAA and youth official, the Summit, Stark, Portage, Geauga, Wayne and Cuyahoga Counties HS and youth leagues and schools do a solid job in presenting and discussing head injuries and concussion management and protocol for ALL sports, not just football.  The school ADs hold mandatory parent meetings prior to start of seasons and usually bring in a health professional, whether, doctor or trainer, to discuss and ask questions....

  4. Latimer comes in with a solid 10th place finish in long jump, Clayton wins the 800 national championship and 2018 grad Phil Jagers finally overcomes his stagefright and posts 7th in the discuss...the ZipsNation should be proud!

  5. USATF National Championships at Des Moines Iowa...Abby Wilson finishes 13th in discuss, Matt Ludwig 6th in pole vault.  Today Jordan Latimer and Terrell McLain have a go in the long jump and former Zip Clayton Murphy is in finals of 800 meter....well done Zips!

  6. Just a thought...One of my issues is that by the time the bowl match-ups are announced, especially to be played in December, there is usually little timeto plan to attend.  I’ve thought of going to Idaho and Florida but with just a few weeks at best, it’s hard to get a low-cost flight and accomodations, and time off work, and the U doesn’t exactly offer great packages for these events, cost-wise.  The people that have gone the past two bowls loved the experience there, but of these “mid-major” type bowls usually are spur of the moment decisions for me....

  7. Had a nice conversation with a couple coaches I ran into at a local establishment two weeks ago...they said they felt the coaching staff is the closest they've been in the last five seasons, and the energy in the room is very good.  They are cautiously optimistic, and said they were just a little concerned at the RB slot, but they were in a good, positive mood.

  8. Matt Ludwig brings home Silver with 2nd in pole vault as a junior, champ last year.  Jordan Latimer -WOW! - Silver medal in the long jump!  Terell McLain 11th.  Rodrigo Iglesias 21st in jav.  Good day, Zips!

  9. Well things get underwat tonight in Eugene Oregon, and if you get tired of watching the NBA finals, switch over to ESPN2, as Matt Ludwig tries to defend his National Title in the PV, and Rodrigo Iglesias will try to win the javlin.  Plus McClain and Lattimer are long jumping, with Terrel winning the Regionals.  The women compete tomorrow night, and our two Hep-ers Siefring and Ortega go on Saturdya-Sunday.  9 Zips - NINE - in the NCAA Finals Championships!  No other MAC school has that many, heck Ohio State is only sending 7!  This is one of our Shining Lights, along with Swimming and Diving and Men's Soccer, so even if your not watching, give them your best vibes....

Someone donated $500,000 to establish an endowed scholarship. There have also been many other commitments for yearly support. The plan is to recruit student athletes from the state of Ohio. No expensive out of state scholarships. Probably not a bunch of expensive spring road trips either.

That was what I was saying about the other MAC teams in the tourney...they got there with LOCAL kids, not many out of staters on any of their rosters, so this shouldn’t be that big of a detriment.

  11. Went to MAC baseball Championships this week.  Kent State survived an implosion in their first round game then crushed Miami twice to win the Championship.  Couple observations...most rosters were heavy with “locals” to their locale.  Also, KSU baseball fans are pretty much idiots.  Sorry, maybe just rude is a better statement.  Played at Sprenger Stadium in Avon Lake, home of the Lake Erie Crushers...independent A league.  The entire field is artificial turf, basepaths, mound, everything.  Just different color.  Funny to watch some base stealers try to slide hed first and have the turf grab and slow them down to a stop short of the base....anyway, anyone know anything new on our projected team?  Lots of talk at tourney about it not going to happen...

    Matt Ludwig - defending National Champion in Pole Vault - 2nd best (5.71 m/18 - 9)

    Cole Wigal - PV - 43rd - 5.08/16-7

    Jenna Frantz (10th PV, 4.25/13' 11")

    Abby Helminiak (27th PV/4.05/13' 4")  4 women pole vaulters in top 27!

Jackie Siefring - 32nd best jump in long jump (6.18 meters, 10 feet 4 inches)

Ariadna Ramos Gandia - 44th in triple jump (12.60/41-5)

What a treadure trove we have in track and field!  Dismal dismal Indoor season, but what a sight to see all these athletes compete on the national stage.

The story the TFCC SID sent out stated that Quaderius (sp?) is a senior for Track.  So he how many seasons left on the gridiron -- just one?

Yep...he is a redshirt senior for 2018 season....

  14. Women track and field repeat as MAC Outdoor Champs!  What a great weekend for the women, lots of great performances.  Daziah Green wins the 100 with a new meet record time.  Completes the double by winning the 200.  Mackenzie Andrews takes 3rd in the 1500.  Dara Perry blows away the conference record in the 100 hurdles.  Patricia Ortega, Iman Batiste and Jackie Siefring all in finals and scored in the 400 hurdles.  Lucy Bryan won the PV and Eboni Hall and Jenna Franz, a freshman, go 3rd - 4th.  Siefring 3rd in Long Jump, Adriana Ramos Gandia 2nd in triple jump.  Abby Wilson 2nd in shot and wins the discus!  And Siefring completes an epic meet with a win in meet record fashion in the Hep, with Ortega 2nd.

The Men finished 2nd, with Kwads 2nd in the 100, Taron Slone 4th on the 100 and 3rd in the 200.  Steve Ashcraft and Nick Winkler scored in the 800.  Freshman Patrick Kimble was 3rd in the 110 hurdles, Curtis Richardson won the High Jump, Matt Ludwig won the PV, with Cole Wigal 2nd and Tyler Fraker 5th.  Jordan Lastimer won the Long Jump and was named Field Event MVP of the meet.  Terrell McClain, who had the #1 jump in the nation coming in, was 2nd.  Maurice Harris had a pair of bronzes in discus and hammer.  And Malik Hudson, Brandon Hochbein and Kamar Majid went 2nd, 3rd and 4th to a tough TJ Lawson from Can't State in the Decathalon.

Couldn't make it to Buffalo but did catch some action from the Big East meet in Geneva OH, and gotta say the MAC programs are so much stronger and competitive that the Big East.  For a Power 5 conference, it was pretty weak.  GetSomeMACtion!

  15. Last home meet before MACs, and some nice performances from some surprising competitors.  While Can’t State rested most of their studs, the Zips ran a lot of theirs.  Taron Slone ran outstanding races in the 100 and 200 meters and Daziah Green set a newschool record in the 200.  Kwads busted a great 100 which is promising for football upcoming.  Rodrigo Iglesias is a force in Jav, he accerates through his throws so forcefully, and Ian Behm gettng stronger.  Nice day for a lot of great seniors.  Going into MAC and NCAA in a lot better shape than the indoor season.  On to Buffalo...go Zips!
