  1. This time it counts....Zips WSOC win their first regular season match of 2018, 3-0 over Green Bay.  A little disorganized to start the match but then settled into a nice attack in the second, similar to Friday night.  Erica Schrader seems to like the leadership role and Baughman, Corrigan and O'Brien look more relaxed now they have a season or two under them.  Jiu in goal is sure going to be a factor going forward.  Now the first road trip and the competition gets a little tougher.  I like 1-0-1 after the first weekend though.

I suspect that you are correct.  It did seem that expectations shot up way too high too early for him.  He has a ton of potential, but it is really, really tough to step right in and play on the offensive line.  I was hoping to get an update based on info from Fall camp.

Sorry 'Kron...it's all I can do (or care about) with the Zips, let alone Penn State. B)

What is the latest on Mike Miranda from Stow?  I heard good things from Spring camp, but nothing from Fall camp.  Is he going to see much playing time for Penn State as a true freshman?

I posted something on Mike in the Winter, and haven't changed my opinion yet.  I watched him play all his high school games here in Stow, as well as basketball and baseball games.  Great kid,  great upside, great long term potential, but I think it was a stretch to go to a P5 school for him, and have him expect a lot of PT his first two seasons.  He'll have to learn (like most freshmen) that the game is so much faster than they expected.  I'm not saying Mike won't be a solid contributor down the line, but not his freshman year, unless PSU goes deep with injuries.  I may be wrong and time will tell, and I'll gladly take the ribbing if I am proven wrong.

I don't mind so much giving up the goal in the last few minutes when Loyola subbed a number of their starters back in against our subs to get the win. Perhaps the sting of giving up that goal and taking the loss will motivate some to now want to not experience that feeling again. However, I find the Zips continued lack of finishing to be troubling. A number of open shots missed and other opportunities not taken. I also don't understand the hesitation, which i saw twice in the first half, to follow through on a fast break counter attack. Twice the Zips were quickly moving forward with several players ahead of their defenders but then held up to allow more of our players to move up field, allowing the defenders to get up field as well. Is there an issue with driving to the goal with less than an optimal number of attacking players? Sure seemed to pay off for Diego Valeri and Darren Mattocks last night.

I have always liked the way the Zips have done just that in the past, and they were usually confident that even if the attack was thwarted, the center mids would have the pace and spacing to collect any breakups and prevent any quick counters, while keeping the ball in the offensive third.  Maybe no confidence in the support yet?

  5. Not a bad start for WSOC.  8 freshmen start against 2 time defending champ Milwaukee from Horizon League, and picked to win again in 2017.  0-0 draw, with the team looking stronger as match progressed.  Impressed with frosh keeper Amani Jiu, who made some very athletic saves, and commanded the backs well.  Also, freshmen Wilson twins are strong, fast and relentless.  St. V/St. M product Catie Corrigan shows good offensive skills and a good boot.  Tomorrow should be a chance to see how quickly they rebound from an overtime match on two day rest.

Just out of curiosity,  How did you get access to the trademark "Zipsnation"?

And I was just trying to be witty in my post....I have not, nor will I appropriate the trademark Zipsnation, which is really ZipsNation, two caps...for anything going henceforth...don't want to run afoul of the correctness issues...

    Balsy,

We old Buchtelite scribes need to share stories, experiences and achievements, real and imagined. I'd like to meet too. Let's PM each other when we can attend a football or soccer game where we can meet for a brew. I'm sure we can solve all Zip challenges in one or two beers

And if you two are buying, I'll stop by and write a personal interest article on you two for our first edition of our ZipsNation Sports Magazine/Webzine!!! :D

  9. Hopefully we'll be saying that more this year.  Today was a good step forward.  Exhibition win over Robert Morris in PA.  Lots of youngsters on this squad, so who knows, but we'll get a look Friday under the lights and Sunday afternoon.  My quess is 5 wins, but possibly 8 optimistically.    4 and 7 MAC record, but if things fall in place 5 and 6 and a berth in MAC tourney.  Catie Corrigan, Shea O'Brien and Erica Schrader keys, and newcomers Rylie Howman and keeper Grace Young should be contributors.  Still more fun than 5 seasons ago...

The natatorium was not part of the plan for the arena that became the JAR. The fault for the debacle that became the JAR lies strictly with Guzetta, the president and his chief advisors and board of trustees. They were not patient. They hired an incompetent architect, who had never deigned an arena. They did not work the legislature or strong arm the local representatives and senators to gain support. They panicked and took what the state offered rather than play the game and possibly wait for the next biennium if they did not get what they wanted (State capital budgeting, which includes state educational institutions had payment for capital projects budgeted over a two year period of time) Guzetta had a low opinion of the role of athletics in a state institution and he had no vision to see how this arena design would hurt the progrum.

Forget the fallacy that Gov Rhodes helped us or was honored by naming it after him. Neither was true. His name on the building was a political payoff to keep him from campaigning against it in the legislature.

I was sports editor of the Buchtelite at the time and we ran a four installment series written by Mark Maloney outlining the present need, the future needs and what solutions could be available. Mark did a fabulous job. He got a meeting with Guzetta. When Mark saw the plans he told Guzetta not to build it. Mark laid out all the reasons we now cite for not commencing construction. He was regarded as an ignorant student who could not see the big picture. History shows otherwise.

Poor leadership can cripple an institution for a long time. The JAR and Ianello are perfect examples of that fact.

See?  I wasn't completely wrong!

To be fair though, isn't that par the course for buildings of that age?

Yeah it was...is.  And really it was unheard of back then to have corporate names and naming rights...most of the moolah was state and federal, with company's giving gifts but to the institution to use as seen fit, andnot as blatantly advertisement-oriented as today.

I seem to remember a few things that might clear up some of the misconceptions about the actual construction.

    1) The seating capacity wasn't reduced to do things to "honor Rhodes".  I believe it was all a matter of certain funds being made available to us if we incorporated more "educational features" into the design.

    2) I do recall some information that said that we rushed to start the project with what we had, and would have had more money if we were more patient.   Does anyone remember something about an additional funding source actually being approved after construction was already underway?

    Thanks for the info skip-zip...

  13. The REAL tragedy of naming the facility the Jame A. Rhodes arena was that the U had to work some superfluous areas of the arena into a set footprint for the building, to "honor" Rhodes, and that extra space/extra expenditure reduced what should have been a better arena into a mediocre one, right from the start.  Less seats, the indoor track, the use of bleachers upstairs....all because we needed more square footage for a lounge, offices, and lots of lobby that could have been placed elsewhere and alllowed a bettwe seating bowl, up and down.

  14. But I've got to say, and I hope there's more than a few of us out there that have these experiences....What made the whole evening was sharing it with my son, who was at my side at the tailgates and in the Rubber Bowl for all of JT's games, and sat beside me for this wonderful evening....I'm tearing up writing this, so....for now...GO ZIPS!
