I played "Risk" in the 8o's too!

To me it's eqiivalent to saying BP shouldn't pay any damages eminating from the Gulf oil spill had they fired their CEO. Leaving the institution off the hook for the actions of those in a position of authority does nothing to eliminate the culture that enabled these horrors in the first place. To say PSU has truly changed negates the FACT that students held a vigil for jopa's statue and chanted WE ARE PENN STATE as it was removed. They are still on thier high horse, and only unprescedented penalties will ever be able to reach them. REMEMBER no matter how much they howl tomorrow, or for the next 10 years, the only victims in this tragedy were the abused children. PERIOD. Oh how the mighty have fallen....
-
Trust me: the only people who think Penn State is some kind of revered academic institution are people who went there, and people who went there are stupid. Call me when you have a degree from PENN, not its woodchuck third cousin.
-
Yeah, but I would guess Penn State would reserve the right to fire an individual, or rescind partnerships, with anyone or anybody found to be fostering a culture of molestation... By that simple measure, Penn State represents the NCAA, period. As such, the NCAA should have the right to protect its brand. I also can't imagine a group of schools following PSU out of the NCAA in protest of any penalties that are ultimately levied against the school for fear of being seen in support of molestation. You really have to set the spirit of competition aside on this one, and view it purely from a legal and business point of view. Only then can we truly recognize what a pile of crap this whole thing is. Truely one of the greatest falls in sports, maybe world, history

My Favorite Akron Player is...
Wally B replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I admit I'm biased from my youth! But anyone who shared Richfield with 20,000 other soccer fans will give Kai a pass on this one! Maybe he resided in Akron before retiring to Rocky River.... I was too young to appreciate the Akron players on the most sucessful soccer team in N. America but I still rememeber the likes of the Nanchoff's and Benny Dargle being anounced! Incidentally, I still have Kai's Force card from this year! Wonder how much it's worth? -
Once a Zip, always a Zip! Thoughts and prayers to his family....

Not to highjack this thread into basketball, but I seem to remember a report suggesting the demolition of Shrank South (as opposed to the Iconic Shrank North). Wouldn't this creat a nice, convienent and preminently accessible arena sized vacancy, smack dab in the center of campus????? I'd still favor a downtown area on main across from Canal Park, but lets save all of this for a sperate thread....

I imagine the point being that Cusa is not reloading with the powerhouse teams they would have purported. It's the differnce between the 2010 MWC attracting Boisie State, and the 2012 MWC attracting the likes of say CalPoly-SLO. OD's inclusion is a sign that the CUSA has slipped, not that ODU isn't a qualified FCS candidate to move up....

Because the a10 hasn't sponsored football since 2006.... ohh we would sooooooo dominate!

Memphis provides the flaw in your arguement. Since the 2005 MCB they have been equally pathetic (although their fall came quicker, and they recovered slightly). Yet they still garnered an invite to the Big East. Ponts of contention: the Info is miles above the hole that is the Liberty Bowl, Memphis (city) is a disaster located on the Mississippi Delta surrounded by Arkansas, Tenn, and Mississippi. Its enrollment is also smaller. Now, It's not my contention that the domination of their basketball team didn't influence their invite, it did, but that wasn't you arguement.

I stand corrected on my previous statement regarding, every school wanting a shot. Ok, every school but Can't....

Ironically, I recently saw an article about the BIG bcs powers which included Cincinnati. Yet, I seem to remember Akron handling them nicely back in the day, and a largely empty Nippert Stadium when I lived down there in the late 90's. A great basketball program and an alliance w/ Louisvile got them in the door. One good coach and some exposure and now they are a power? It can be done. Trust me Nippert was an embarasment equal to the rubber bowl...

Hell, overall the Mac may be better than the kitchen sink Thus Big East is an option, CUSA is not, and enjoy the stability until then. Remember, the conference pardigms of 2011 and 2010 are gone. Impending CUSA roster Tulsa - decent all round program UAB - doesn't stand out Charlotte - decent basketball, no curent football due to objecting donor (I swear this is true) ECU - decent football, but nothing else.... yeah I know baseball but that isn't a driving force FIU - only notables are a football fight with Miami (FL) and FL location Marshall - nuff said, best days were in MAC while cheating.... NTx - location in Texas is only redeming quality Rice - Largely unnoticed Fb and bb programs, baseball nat champions though, would like to be w/ Houston or in B12. SMs - Good fb program, probably tops in league, like ECU cant think of anything else Tulane - I think they had to sue to keep president from nixing entire program, haven't recovered UTEP - historic bb, on violent section of Mexican Border in desert. UTSA - has yet to play a single fb game LA Tech - not much since Bradshaw beat the Zips in the championship... United behind hatred for LSU Yep, WAaaayyy...... better than the MAC, just what we need to start going places
-
I would add that Bowden mentioned he was contacted by an executive recruiter after Winters rejected the position..... That and the recruiter was shocked when he said yes... but I digress, sorry I don't have time to search down the link. Back to the Big East... We'd be fools not to want to move up. There isn't a school or fan base in non-aq FBS that doesn't desire a shot at the next level. Prepared, qualified, or anything less is just ludacrist.
-
Again, you're talking about the old CUSA.... that isn't the case now. Maybe again, sometime in the distant future... but not by their emerging membership. There is no established tier system. Conference prestige is driven by membership, and that has changed drastically this year.
-
Fair enough as it stands now... I think it will be interesting to see how the bowls and broadcast contracts pay out.
-
Which includues a great NIU team, former nat champ Hartwick, and a resurgent WMU. Back to football, the CUSA still offers us nothing... except more travel. Yeah there were a number of programs looking to "move up" but again Zach the question remains to what? The new look CUSA looks dreadful and has its full share of mediocre or worse programs... There's little they can do to add power to their conference at this point, hence the teams they took. Right now, the MAC is looking good at this point as a place of stability and a better strength when compared to what's left. Yes add JMU and OD... Those would be targeted additions, not the free for all exhibited by CUSA. Additional, who exactly are they going to add out west for the MTW? Only Idaho and NMST are left... that's it... end of the road... period...

I got tear-gassed there duting the infamous Katheryn Pl riots!!

Why don't we just start playing Aussie Rules??

Back to the topic at hand! Actually this is the dummest article I've read in some time. Not because of it's content, but rather its insistence on a malfeasance that never happened. Reading it was much like watching Geraldo Rivera open Capone's Vault. IMG gave money to Can't State as part of their broadcast agreement. Per NCAA regulations, schools may use tickets sold as a benchmark. The athletic department simply had IMG purchase tickets instead of making a straight payment. Either way, the money goes into the departments coffers. The chosen option simply satisfies an NCAA requirement, hopefully until the situation can be resolved. The AD was asked to fulfill the requirement, and he did that, and recieved his contractual bonus. Let me repeat the fact that Can't State followed the rules. No one lost anything, no students were screwed, the police are not involved, end of story. Seems like a lot of work for a student bent on creating a controversy to make a name for themselves and kick start a career in a field that is dying faster than Sarkozy's political career. In the end this is what we get. Journalism based on creating controversy. In reality it only served to highlight the fact that Can't's anti-sports student culture is still largely in tact after all these years (defference paid to actual Can't fans like Axeme, DocCan't State) unless we're discussing basketball, because..... you know.... they win alot and were on tv when they played in the tourney...... so then it was ok.... Here we thought we had it rough with iCoach

To Quote George Carlin: the Upper Class (BCS) keeps all of the money pays none of the taxes..... the Middle Class (Mid-Majors) pays all of taxes, does all of the work! the Poor (FCS) are there..... just to scare the sh** out of the Middle Class

"IF" we were to create a "AA" league for our selves, how would we aviod the encroaching FCS bloodletting that Montana's former AD forewarned about? Here's an interesting article on the conversion of FBS rules, BCS power, and the role of mid-majors (includes link to Montana story) Should the BCS schools save the WAC? Pretty insightful, certainly more intelligent than your run of the mill MACbbs expansion cr**
