  1. On paper, might be the most quality depth since 2012-13.
  2. I'd rather bring Tribble off the bench as a sparkplug but I can see them starting him as well.
  3. If it is Ali, I'll be interested to see how everyone fits. Ali/Hunter/Baker Dawson/Prather Freeman/Lyles/MMK Thornton/Tribble/N. Johnson Scott/Tavari
  4. I find it fascinating that Ali Ali entered the portal and hasn't been connected to anyone while no rumored players have been connected to our final scholly either.
  5. If the AD or Head Coach at Toledo were offered a gig making more at a big-time school how loyal would they be? Players are only doing the same thing coaches and ADs have been doing for years.
  6. I'm bummed to hear about the Surplus Sale not happening. I've found some really cool gear in past years at the event. I'm hoping that at some point, we'll be able to purchase more of a selection of items. I haven't been to the Team Shop in awhile but last time I wasn't impressed. Has it improved or does anyone know of a good place for gear? I remember a time when you could buy baseball game hats, team jerseys, etc.
  7. Some here seem to really take it personally when someone leaves UA, coach or player. I've never understood it. Some serious "jealous ex" vibes.
  8. Of course you welcome him back. But would he be able to play next year? Ali/Hunter/MMK Dawson/Johnson Freeman/Lyles/Baker Scott/Tribble/Prather Thornton/T. Johnson That team could be SPECIAL.
  9. I swear they follow this forum 😂
  10. To be fair, I went searching for Spring Game info on the Zips Athletics site and their social media and couldn't find anything so I came here. Hard to blame local media when Athletics isn't getting this information out there well enough. Anyhow, I see someone said 3 PM...any idea if there's a surplus sale this year?
  11. I guess all I'm saying is Guthrie's Akron tenure won't be decided by how well the women's team does. He's not losing his job if this hire doesn't work out. He will need a men's basketball March Madness run or the football team turning things around to get the next job he is gunning for and he knows it.
  12. Sexist? They're describing good qualities of a coach that I think most would want. It's a business, but you also want your school to treat people well. I'm not saying they did/didn't - I don't know how everything went down behind the scenes - but if she wasn't treated well/fair, I wouldn't be happy with that as alumni of the school.
  13. I don't know that it's riskier than status quo for him.
  14. The last scholarship has go to a big, right?
  15. Interesting addition...I was honestly hoping for a PG a bit more polished/experienced. At first glance, Scott seems to be in a similar spot to Tavari - the talent is there but not a proven D1 starter yet.
  16. I've thought about using Sammy Hunter as more of a 3, essentially as an outside threat. He doesn't provide much rebounding or rim protection as a 4 but had some good games outside shooting. If you can find a 4 who can play inside but also has range, that'd be pretty huge.
  17. My dream scenario is adding one big and two guards, all immediate-impact. I'll be really disappointed if any of these go to a HS player...this team has pieces to win now in what I think may be a down year for the conference overall - go all in and go for it. Hunter/Lyles/Mosengo (or Baker) Dawson/Johnson/Prather Jr. Freeman/Transfer Transfer/Tribble Transfer/Johnson If you hit on the transfers (big "if") that's a potentially really good squad.
  18. It's fun to look back. We've had some fantastic players in Blue and Gold over the years.
  19. Wikipedia has this: 1. Fred Golding - 1,360 2. Don Williams - 1,218 3. Ray Pryear - 1,213 4. Bill Turner - 1,171 5. Len Paul - 1,021 6. Frank Thompson - 996 7. Enrique Freeman - 952 8. Alex Adams - 872 9. Harvey Glover - 801 10. Romeo Travis - 783 So Freeman is not the all-time leader overall but all-time leader in the D1 Era. He had 370 rebounds this past season, so he has a shot at the all-time mark with a big senior year.
  20. Yeah that doesn't look right. Can't find an online media guide either.
  21. It only goes back to 1989 though I think https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/akron/men/leaders-and-records-career.html
  22. Thinking back recently to some of our past teams/players and I'm curious to hear thoughts on this. Who is your all-time Zips starting five? To keep it simple, I'm only looking at Division 1 Era. Here's mine: F-Enrique Freeman Already an all-time leading rebounder and 8th all-time in blocks, he will rise into the top 10 all-time leading scoring list next season as well. He has the highest PER of any Zip over the past 20 years. F-Romeo Travis Total package. Most win shares of any Zip over the past 20 years. Bonus points for being one of a couple players who really helped elevate Akron's program near the beginning of the KD Era. C-Zeke Marshall Didn't develop the offensive game of other great Zips bigs, but the rim protection he provided was something special. #1 all-time in blocks at Akron and #31 among all collegiate players since 1985. I'll never forget his block against Kent in OT in Cleveland. G-Joe Jakubick I never had the pleasure of watching him play, but the stats don't lie here - dude was a walking bucket. Two-time OVC POY. From 1980-2023, only 6 D1 players have averaged more points per game in a season than Joe did in 1983-84 (30.1 ppg). G-Loren Cristian Jackson Ball, Dru, XC, McNees, Dials, Abreu...we've had some really good point guards. I'll go with one of the best scorers in school history (especially knowing the defense I have behind him).
