  1. Peter Agba, Emmanuel Olojakpoke and Daniel Utomi. All 3 Nigerians are athletic, physical forwards who can rebound and score. I'm thinking they're all bigger (6-6 to 6-7) versions of Deji who can play the 3/4 rather than the 2/3 Deji played. Hopefully they'll develop faster than Deji did. Best case scenario is that at least one of them approaches Tree's quick development curve.
  2. College teams have for years not been allowed to have more than two current players on each summer league team, but incoming freshmen and transfers could join those two without being counted against the limit. The NCAA changed the rule to count incoming freshmen and transfers against the two player maximum from each school on each summer league team, and Bob Huggins among others was not happy.
  3. Well, let's see, Hunter Yurachek is a past UA interim AD. So is Mike Waddell. Looking further back, Mike Rodriguez and Richard Aynes both held the position. Not sure if there's a comprehensive list anywhere, but maybe the old-timers recall some more from past decades.
  4. Scholarship players value walk-ons more than fans do as most fans only rarely get to see them play a few minutes in garbage time. The quality of the walk-ons is important because they challenge the scholarship players in team scrimmages. The better the walk-ons the better prepared the scholarship players become.
  5. Here's what the latest rules say about the Akron Canton Am Pro Men's Summer League at Walsh University and other similar summer leagues:
  6. I wonder if Coach Bowden's camps test how well the QB prospects perform with baseballs as Coach Harbaugh is doing at UM?
  7. Zeke partners with Scoring Factory's Coach Pete Strobl to present Camp Zeke.
  8. With UA in the midst of making some tough financial decisions, having the CFO as interim AD allows him to put the athletics financial house in order rather than dumping that responsibility into the lap of a new AD. Good to know that Mr. Mortimer has sound knowledge about and respect for Zips athletics.
  9. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that little UA outscored mighty tOSU at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. I think it was noted on GoZips.com that UA finished 12th overall, just 1 point outside the top 10, and was the top scoring team from outside the Power 5 conferences. But easily outscoring tOSU reinforces the lesson UA has already proved in soccer -- that the Zips can outperform tOSU in athletics where obscene amounts of cash are not involved. 1 Oregon 85.0 2 Florida 56.0 3 Arkansas 53.0 4 LSU 45.0 5 USC 40.50 6 Texas A&M 27.0 7 Texas 26.0 8 Miss State 20.0 9 Texas Tech 18.0 10 Penn State 17.0 10 Illinois 17.0 12 Akron 16.0 13 Baylor 14.0 13 BYU 14.0 15 Georgia 13.0 37 Ohio State 7.0
  10. Unfortunately the Cavs ran out of gas in the 3rd quarter tonight. Golden State is an outstanding team that was fortunate to go through the whole season with no serious injuries. They were predicted by most to have an edge over the Cavs even with a healthy Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. Credit to the Cavs for never giving up and winning a couple of games against the odds.
  11. I sure hope the Cavs surprise me tonight with a miraculous effort. But I'm not sure they can overcome the high-energy game the Warriors are throwing at them. The Cavs showed pretty good energy in the first 3 games, but have looked increasingly gassed at the end of the last 2 games, as you might expect from a short-handed team playing against a healthy one with all of their star players at full strength and a deep bench. A sign of the late-game fatigue the Cavs have run into in the NBA Finals is that they've been outscored toward the end of each of the 5 games so far, including the 2 games they've won. The Cavs led 4 of the games going into the 4th quarter and were tied for the lead in the other game. But they've been outscored by a total of 43 points in the 4th quarters plus extra 5 minutes of each of the 2 OT games. Over those final 70 minutes they've been outscored by more than half a point per minute or an average of 8.6 points per game.
  12. Interesting twist on Michigan's efforts to cap tuition at state universities: Tough choice? EMU hikes tuition, forfeits $1M in state aid
  13. It's hard to interpret these kinds of things without knowing more about the individuals involved and the fine details of the issues involved. These two appear to have a major personality conflict at the very least. It's a shame that a third party at UA wasn't able to step in and resolve the issues before this went public.
  14. According to the MAC site, all 12 MAC schools currently compete in the following sports: Baseball Basketball (men's and women's) Cross Country (women's) Football Soccer (women's) Softball Track and Field, Indoor (women's) Volleyball Other sports range from a high of 10 (women's golf) to a low of 5 (men's indoor track and field).
  15. Dellavedova is a good backup for the injury-prone Irving. Playing his guts out for 15 minutes a game during the regular season, harassing opponents and scoring a few points per game is all that's needed to help keep Kyrie fresh and the Cavs winning. Averaging 40 minutes per game for a 7-game championship series for the short-handed Cavs against the best backcourt and team in the NBA is beyond expectations for any NBA backup PG. The main reason why the Cavs bench played more minutes than the Warriors last night is because they went small for most of the game with Mosgov starting but only playing 9 minutes. The Warriors are fresher because they've had a deeper, healthier bench all season and throughout the playoffs. Their style of play is good at wearing down defenses.
  16. LeBron James' unfathomable workload
  17. Buffalo is on the New York napkin, or is it the Canadian napkin? True story: Hilltopper and I were driving through Buffalo with his car's navigation system giving us verbal directions. All the way to Buffalo the navigation voice was telling us how many miles we had to go. As we entered the Buffalo city limits the navigation voice suddenly started giving distances in kilometers, as in "merge left in two kilometers." It did that all the way through Buffalo until we got to the opposite city limits, where it went back to giving distances in miles. Is that Canada or what, eh?
  18. For a short-handed team, game #4 was the worst in the championship series as it was the only time when a third game was played in five days. It was pretty obvious that the Cavs were feeling the fatigue while the Warriors had lots of energy from a deeper bench with players having averaged fewer minutes. Delly spent time on the bench getting more treatment for leg cramps and LeBron getting his head split open on the videocam didn't help. Most of the predictions about Golden State easily rolling over the Cavs were based on a deep and talented roster over a short bench missing two of its stars. Whether or not they win another game, the Cavs have shown a lot of heart under circumstances as difficult as any NBA Finals team has ever faced.
  19. zip-O-matic, while it's possible that OU may have passed UA in total R&D spending since the last numbers cited (2013), the recent trend has been more in UA's favor according to the table I linked to in my last post. Over the six years from 2008 through 2013, UA's ranking has risen every year from #224 in 2008 to #169 in 2013. Over the same period OU has been much flatter, slowly rising from #195 in 2008 to #185 in 2013. UA surpassed OU in this area in 2010 and steadily increased the gap through 2013. Anyway, it's a waste of time trying to convince certain OU boosters that their alma mater is not superior to UA in every imaginable way. There's plenty to discuss about UA rebranding without getting sidetracked on debating which school may be ranked a little higher or lower on the same side of the napkin.
  20. I'm always a little skeptical of stats without links as I like to check myself and see the full context of the numbers cited. Just briefly poking around on the National Science Foundation website, I found a data table of academic institutions ranked from 1-643 by total R&D expenditures here. UA was #169 and OU #185 in the latest posted rankings (2013).
  21. Sorting all of the columns shows UA #72 in total revenue ($32,774,266), #74 in total expenses ($32, 050,686), #15 in total subsidy ($22,654,017) and #100 in % subsidy (69.12%). Sorting by conference shows all the MAC schools together for comparison.
  22. Interim is typically for months, not years.
  23. Interim just means temporary or transitional. Companies put an interim department head in place if they don't have an immediate permanent successor standing by to replace a departing executive. If UA appoints a temporary AD I would interpret that to mean that they are going to do a serious search for the right person and not jump into a quick hire.
  24. Gee whiz, and here I was thinking my stats had proven beyond all doubt that Curry could never possibly have a great scoring quarter or two in this whole series. The relevant point is not "did-he-really-do-that?" which everyone knew he eventually would but "did-they-really-do-that?" as in the Cavs beating the Warriors two games in a row without two of their Big Three. But speaking of stats, I'll take the Cavs in any game where Curry outscores Delly by 7 points or less.
  25. Ranked 13th-best wide receiver in the country out of HS. Hope he's got something left after all the injuries.
