The Zips passing game will stay alive with Getsy throwing for well over 300 yards, but it won't be enough. Line: Memphis -6 ... CFN Prediction: Memphis 26 ... Akron 21"

  13. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/13403725.htm Beacon Journal covering Akron Recruiting??? Now I have really seen it all.. two stories in two days. First on RB from VA Boone and now on QB from TX Sean Hakes... "Hakes, a 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, is considering enrolling in January. He has just one high school class left, and he is looking into taking it as a correspondence course. That way, he could work out with his new teammates during spring drills -- a new but growing trend for some of the nation's top football recruits. ``That's our goal, to get up there in January,'' he said. ``If not, I'll be up there in May.'' Hakes choose the Zips over Mississippi, Colorado State and Bowling Green. Hakes runs a 4.6-second 40-yard dash. He wanted to move to the Midwest to be closer to his family. He was born in Columbus but moved to Fort Worth at age 4. His older brother, Scott, is a student at Ohio University. Bowling Green was considered a favorite until Hakes visited Akron after the Mid-American Conference Championship game. ``I was really blown away,'' he said."

  19. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=Ao...v=tsn&type=lgns "There are plenty of candidates for coach of the year, but one that will be overlooked is Akron's J.D. Brookhart. The Zips had to replace the core of a six-win team and went from the low of a shutout loss to Army at midseason to winning four of their last five games and securing the first conference championship in school history. . . . " and in comparison on OU's Frank Solich: "What are we to think of Ohio's decision to retain coach Frank Solich after his arrest for drunken driving--and after police found him slumped over the steering wheel of his car. What we know is this: Not firing Solich sends a mixed message--at best--about accountability and responsibility to students and athletes at the school. "
  20. Sports Illustrated's Stewart Mandel ranks Bowls from 1-28. 2005 Motor City Bowl is ranked 19th... His comments and link below" "19) Motor City (Dec. 26): Akron (7-5) vs. Memphis (6-5). If you think this ranking is too high, you obviously didn't see Zips receiver Domenik Hixon's heroic performance in the MAC title game, and/or you've never watched Memphis running back DeAngelo Williams. 21. Luke is the man.. Hixson is superhuman... JD.. what can we say? Anybody seen WPIAL??? Two Words: MAC CHAMPIONS Three more words: MOTOR CITY BOWL
  22. In the same edition, same moron Pete Fiutak has this to say" " Nov. 27, 2005 Five Thoughts Week 13 Five Thoughts: Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7 | Week 8 | Week 9 Week 10 | Week 11 | Week 12 To repeat, no repeats. By Pete Fiutak 1. Call me a fan of Texas and Akron this weekend. I hate repeat games. HATE them. College football is the sport it is because the regular season means everything. While I won't fire out the "every game is a playoff" cliché, the fact that the games are so meaningful week in and week out means it's the only sport in which the regular season actually matters. Texas beat Colorado 42-17 on October 15th. Akron beat Northern Illinois 48-42 in overtime on September 24th. Done. Over. Texas should be the Big 12 champions, and Akron should be the MAC champions. Fine, so NIU has a better MAC record than Akron, but my point is that teams shouldn't get a second chance. Otherwise, the first showdown is meaningless and the regular season is devalued. Which brings me to how this should change ..." And he goes on to praise JD's coaching as one of the "Best Coaching jobs you may not have noticed" "How about the Akron Zips? With no Charlie Frye at the helm, a MAC East title wasn’t seemingly on the to-go menu, but head ball coach JD Brookhart has this program in Detroit next week against Northern Illinois for a MAC championship." http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/5_...ve_Thoughts.htm

  24. Here we go again.. Toledo fans are full of arrogance and spout off all the time about how they are the measuring stick for the rest of the Conference. (Some of it is rightly so... MAC Champs every year have the right to be a little cocky.) So we compare our programs to the Rockets and then you take it personal when I call you out and compare your schedule to NIU? Dude, You beat Temple, Buffalo, Ball State and Western Illinois. Three of these wins are against ESPN Bottom 10 Perennial Contenders. You are not going to tell me that isn't patheTic no matter how you spin it. I have no "Beef" with Toledo.. I am simply pointing out that you didn't get the GMAC Bowl invite cause you had quality wins in 05... in fact just the opposite....Toledo's reputation got the bid.. something all of us are shooting for... An Akron team with wins like above wouldn't get an invite even if they finished 9-2. Don't be so sensitive.... msopher.... even you have to admit those four opponents are pretty weak...
