  1. Zips are projected to tie Buffalo for 4th in the East CFN MAC PREVIEW East 1 BG (7-1) 1 MIAMI (7-1) 3 Can't STATE (4-4) 4 AKRON (3-5) 4 BUFFALO (3-5) West 1 NIU (7-1) 1 Toledo (7-1) 3 EMU (3-5) 4 CMU (2-6) 5 BSU (1-7) 5 WMU (1-7) I still have a hard time believing Can't has passed us by...I think JD is being underestimated again this season... which is fine by me... we can steal a game or two by flying under the radar...
  2. Vandelay's 2005 MAC Pigskin Preview Has Zips @ 3-5 along with Ohio and Buffalo and Can't at 1-7? He lists Jabari at QB?? Looks like we are being overlooked again.. which may be an advantage...I think he underestimates the value of having a real coach leading the Zips. We may be young, but most of these guys now have had two years of the JD (Just Do it) system... I may be overly optimistic but...is this really where we are? From Akron Preview on Vandelay: "Final Thoughts Sadly, Akron was the only team who was bowl eligible in 2004 that didn’t get a bid last season. This year the Zips return 12 starters from a 6-5 team that finished in a tie in the MAC East. What makes matters worse is they must replace Charlie Frye, the school’s best QB ever, four very good offensive linemen, and a total of 20 lettermen. Frye accounted for more than 70 percent of last season's total offense and 54 school records. He ended his career ranked No. 11 on the NCAA career total offense chart and No. 16 on the career passing yards. Coach JD Brookhart is the reigning 2004 MAC Coach of the Year and will need to make quick magic once again. Last season Akron started 0-3 before everything fell into place. This year may be more of the same considering the make-shift offense line, major change at QB, and youth at many positions. Overall this a good team with lots of quality underclassmen. The Zips are two years away from being a MAC title contender. This year their focus will be on another winning season and to try break free from the middle of the MAC East standings. " Schedule (Vandelay's Predictions) at Purdue LOSS at MTSU LOSS Northern Illinois LOSS Central Michigan WIN at Buffalo LOSS at Miami LOSS Army WIN at Bowling Green LOSS at Ball State LOSS Ohio WIN Can't State (Thanksgiving) WIN 4-7 overall 3-5 MAC I'm not saying this is a sure thing. But I believe in JD's ability to game plan to keep us in most of these games. And the new attitude in this program -- I believe it will make a huge difference.... As for record, MTSU, Buffalo and Ball State are winnable games.. win those and 4-7 (3-5) becomes 7-4 (5-3). Am I way off here??? Thoughts/comments???

  5. Another Kangaroo Running Wild CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A kangaroo has been on the loose for the last several months outside Charleston, perplexing authorities who have had problems catching it. The 3-foot kangaroo, believed to be a male, comes out mostly at night or in the early morning, officials said. He makes appearances in backyards and on the county's rural roads. "People will call in and say, 'I swear I'm not drunk or on drugs, but I just saw a kangaroo,'" state conservation officer Clyde Armstead said Thursday. The first person to report seeing the kangaroo called police one week after Christmas, saying the animal was in their yard. "The dispatcher thought someone was celebrating New Year's early," Armstead said. Some think it may belong to the owners of an exotic animal farm in a nearby town, but the owner hasn't come forward. Armstead and three police officers tried to catch the kangaroo a few nights ago after it was seen along a road. They managed to corner it, but it was too quick for them and it got away. "There was no way to catch him, it was like chasing a deer," Armstead said. "And even if we did get him, I don't know what we would have done with our bare hands. They can kick pretty hard." Readers of Out There know that stray kangaroos have been popping up a lot lately, with sightings in Kentucky and Wisconsin earlier this year.

Posted on Wed, Jun. 01, 2005 University of Akron notebook Debut of Dials could be delayed Guard to have surgery after sustaining torn ACL in 3-on-3 game By Darnell Mayberry Beacon Journal sports writer University of Akron sophomore basketball guard Nick Dials, who sat out last season under NCAA rules after transferring from Ohio State, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing 3-on-3 with teammates during an open gym session last week. Dials is scheduled to have surgery on the knee Thursday afternoon. A recovery period of about six to nine months is expected. ``If I had to guess right now, I'd say he'd miss a year,'' Akron coach Keith Dambrot said. Dials' injury eerily occurred the same way as sophomore forward Jeremiah Wood's in early January, both landing awkwardly going after a rebound. ``I landed on one leg,'' Dials said. ``It just stuck in the ground. Basically my weight was going right and my knee twisted left.'' The Zips were depending on Dials to provide a better backcourt rotation. They hoped his outside shooting would ease the departure of graduated forward Rick McFadden. ``It's a big blow to us,'' Dambrot said. ``This guy is a guy who's a winning guy. ``He's not a guy who can score 20 points a game but he's a winner.'' Dials sounded confident that he'd be ready for the start of the season. ``Regardless of what the doctor says, I'll be ready,'' he said. ``This season, I've been looking forward to it for over a year now, and it's kind of hard for me to let something get in the way of that.'' Hipsher, Arkansas talk Former Akron men's basketball coach Dan Hipsher is among the leading candidates for the top assistant position at Arkansas, which was recently vacated by Bill Herrion, who accepted the head coaching job at New Hampshire. It is believed that Hipsher will meet with the Arkansas administration Sunday and Monday in Fayetteville, Ark., and likely will receive an offer. Hipsher coached nine seasons with the Zips from 1996-2004, with a 112-137 record. Hipsher, who was fired after the 2003-2004 season, has been working in Akron's office of public affairs and development since his dismissal. Hipsher would coach under Stan Heath, the former coach at Can't State who is now in his third season at Arkansas.

  12. ok.. then under age freshman had access to the Open bar.... doesn't matter anyway.. just pointing out that Huggy Bear has been struggling with this demon for a long time...
  13. For what it's worth.... I know someone who used to work at UA and did some work around and inside the office of Bob Huggins during his time at Akron. Apparently, Coach had a private stash in a small fridge inside the office.. the players had free access... Which would be ok except most of them were not yet 21.... He has had this problem a long time... but if you win, people are willing to look the other way....
  14. Was actually posted on CFN weeks ago.. note the by line... CFN is notoriously inaccurate.. suggest you check them out and read predictions on all MAC teams thus far.... They usually say the season will be a success if "this team has a winning season or should be .500 or better or six wins is a reasonable expectation with this schedule." They have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the MAC.... I submit the following as evidence: Thus far the CFN has profiled the following MAC schools with the following predictions: Akron: "The season will be a success if ... Akron finishes with a winning season. There can't be any gaffes like there was last year to MTSU and there needs to be an unexpected win over a good team, but there's no reason to shoot for anything less than six wins with this schedule. " Buffalo: "The season will be a success if ... Buffalo finishes with five wins. If the team can't win five wins with this much experience and this much depth, it might not ever be able to." CMU: "The season will be a success if ... CMU comes up with a winning season. Considering 1998 was the last winning season, and the only one since 1994, getting to at least 6-5 would be a great boost for the program. " NIU: "The season will be a success if ... Northern Illinois wins the MAC. It's time to take the next step. Beating Toledo and getting to the MAC title would make for a good season, but Joe Novak's team has been too close and too good not to become champions." WMU: "The season will be a success if ... WMU finishes with a winning season. The MAC schedule is way too favorable to demand anything less. There can't be slipups against Buffalo, Ball State or Central Michigan." So far everybody is Five Wins or better???? Can't will be "a winning season" as will Ball State, Ohio, EMU.. BG, Toledo and Miami will be "win the conference." So if everybody is 5 to 6 wins or better, then who's going to suck??? Apparently nobody...maybe Temple in 2006?? http://www.collegefootballnews.com/
  15. Two observations: First. Can't wait to see this list after Charlie Frye publicity has its full effect. Being drafted by the Browns will have a tremendous effect on Ohio/local recruiting for JD. He'll be be able to talk to kids who wouldn't give Akron the time of day before. Second. Anyone else as stunned as I am when looking through all the potential 2006 recruits to see very few of these kids list other MAC schools as schools of interest? They list ACC, Big East, Big Ten and SEC schools. I assume that the information on this site is supplied by the recruit and could be a propaganda designed to bolster their individual positions. So then the recruit lists his schools of interest and his level of interest in each? Even if that is so, JD is competing with the big boys and an occasional Toledo or Can't State... that's pretty good company... It's nice to see these kids consider Akron right up there with the bigger names...
  16. 15k paid or actual every two years.. Also, 1A's can count a 1AA win for Bowl Eligibility EVERY YEAR.. Never again will 5 MAC teams go bowling... Story below -- NCAA set to allow 12 football games Attendance requirement is revised The NCAA will allow football teams to play 12 games per year, but it won't enter the postseason playoff fray. The board of directors approved proposals on Thursday that would add a 12th game to Division I-A schedules -- starting in 2006 -- allow schools to count one victory over Division I-AA schools each year toward bowl eligibility, and loosen the requirements to qualify for Division I-A status. ``The season will not be elongated, it just means the bye week would be taken out,'' NCAA president Myles Brand said. ``Nor will it lead to any additional midweek games. ``But I seriously suggest you take up the tournament situation with the BCS.'' Brand has supported academic reform since taking over as president in January 2003 and said Thursday that an additional football game each season won't create a problem. Board chairman Robert Hemenway, the chancellor at Kansas, said schools could make more money with an extra game but he insisted that wasn't the only reason why the proposal passed. ``There was also a feeling that if you had another game, that it does give you some flexibility in your scheduling,'' he said. ``A school like Oklahoma State, for instance, could possibly play a game in Tulsa or Oklahoma City and play to that fan base.'' Brand said the extra money could also be used to help fund athletic departments that are losing money. The board also adopted a resolution that strongly urged schools not to adopt the new Title IX Internet-based surveys, which the U.S. Department of Education said in March could be used to scientifically gauge whether schools must expand or create women's teams to meet demand. ``We felt that it was not true to the principles that have been in effect,'' Hemenway said. The board also asked the NCAA executive committee to propose a comprehensive policy on alcohol advertising during college telecasts. Hemenway said the committee took that action after a lengthy discussion to include Division II and III events under any new standard. Besides the 12th game, the NCAA will allow schools to count one victory over a I-AA opponent each year, starting this fall. Previously, schools could count one win every four years. And smaller football programs, such as those in the Mountain West and Mid-American Conferences, also got good news. The NCAA will now allow schools to qualify for Division I-A if they average 15,000 in paid or actual attendance once every two years. Previously, schools had to have 15,000 in actual attendance.

  18. Frye pleased to be picked by Browns Being third player chosen in third round sits well with the Zips' record-setting senior quarterback By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal staff writer Zips senior quarterback Charlie Frye has always been cool, calm and collected during his illustrious career at the University of Akron. So when he wasn't taken in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft Saturday, as some draft experts expected, he wasn't sweating it. He knew his time was coming. And in the third round, with the 67th overall pick, the Browns selected Frye. ``I was the third guy taken in the third round, so I'm happy with that,'' said Frye, who finished his collegiate career as the school's all-time leader passer with 11,049 yards and holds 54 school records. ``I'm just glad to be with the Cleveland Browns.'' Frye was at his parents' home in Willard with family and friends waiting to hear which team would make the call. ``The Browns called me about 30 seconds before they made the announcement on TV,'' Frye said. ``It's a great feeling to be playing this close to home again. It's going to save me a lot on air fare.'' Some draft experts predicted that Frye would be taken in the second round by the Green Bay Packers with the 51st pick. But the Packers took California's Aaron Rodgers in the first round with the 24th overall pick, which surprised many observers. Not that the Packers picked Rodgers, but the fact that Rodgers lasted that long. ``I wasn't expecting to see Rodgers slip to 24,'' Frye said. Meanwhile, the Lake County Chapter of the Browns Backers met for a draft party at Lost Nation Sports Park in Willoughby and most were happy to see Frye go to the Browns. ``Charlie Frye is a good pick,'' said Scott Youmell of Mentor. ``He'll be coming into a situation where he will be behind a veteran quarterback (Trent Dilfer) who played in a Super Bowl and is on his way out of the NFL.'' As usual, there were some Browns fans who thought that the organization didn't need another quarterback. "I don't know about this pick,'' said Mike May of Uniontown. ``I'm not real happy about it because I think it's risky. I know these Mid-American Conference players are up-and-coming, but the Browns have had question marks in the past with the quarterback picks they've made. Like, are they done with (backup quarterback) Luke McCown already?'' McCown, who played at Louisiana Tech, was selected by the Browns in the fourth round of the 2004 draft (106th pick overall). During his rookie season, McCown appeared in five games, including four starts, and threw for a career-high 277 yards (20-of-34) and two touchdowns against the New England Patriots in December. But Bill Jones of Cleveland agreed with May. ``I was born and raised in Cleveland and I used to be a Browns fan,'' said Jones, who was proudly sporting a Pittsburgh Steelers hat, sweatshirt and a black turtleneck underneath the sweatshirt with the Steelers logo on the collar. ``They need to build the offensive line. You need a good offensive line to help out your quarterback. Just look at Ben Roethlisberger with the Steelers. ``The number one reason why I don't follow the Browns any more is because when it comes to draft time, they always blow it. Just look at Tim Couch.'' Frye's selection by Browns makes travel easy for family Quarterback becomes highest drafted Zips player in school history, passing Dolphins' Taylor By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal staff writer BEREA - When Browns general manager Phil Savage called Charlie Frye's house in Willard to tell him he was about to join the Browns, Frye couldn't hear a word Savage said. There was too much screaming in the background. ``That was my parents and my brother and my sisters,'' Frye said. ``They saved me a lot of airfare. I don't think they missed a game at Akron. It's a great situation for me.'' It will be an easy trip for the Frye family from their home 40 miles south of Sandusky to Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns selected the University of Akron quarterback 67th overall Saturday. Frye became the highest Akron player ever selected, surpassing defensive end Jason Taylor, tabbed in the third round and 73rd overall by the Miami Dolphins in 1997. Frye was only the sixth Zip chosen. After idolizing Bernie Kosar as a youngster, Frye knows Browns fans will be fired up to see him in an orange helmet. ``I think they're going to be excited,'' he said. ``Playing at Akron 30 miles away I'm sure a lot saw me play in college. I'm just as excited as they are to play for the Browns. Hopefully we can make this work.'' That might not be right away. Backing up newly signed free agent Trent Dilfer, Frye will compete to become the Browns' quarterback of the future with one of two rookies from 2004, Luke McCown and Josh Harris. Savage said one of them would likely be traded today. Asked if he envisioned himself as a winning starter in the pros, Frye said: ``If you don't visualize that, what are you trying to do in the NFL? I know they have Trent Dilfer as a proven veteran. I'm going to learn as much as I can.'' The situation for Frye and the Browns fell perfectly Saturday. Utah's Alex Smith was the No. 1 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers, but Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers slipped to 24th, taken by the Green Bay Packers. The Packers had shown a lot of interest in Frye as they searched for the successor to Brett Favre. Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell, another player the Browns brought in for a visit, was taken next at No. 25 by the Washington Redskins. No other quarterbacks were taken between Campbell and Frye. Frye said he wasn't frustrated going in the third round, but admitted: ``I was getting a little anxious. But I'm coming into a great situation with coach (Romeo) Crennel and the great staff and new general manager Mr. Savage.'' Savage spent two hours watching film with Frye after his pro day at Akron April 1. ``I told him about my history, how much I love the game and love to play the game,'' Frye said. ``We hit it off pretty well. I met the quarterback coach (Rip Scherer) on Wednesday. We watched the Marshall game together. He's a great quarterback coach and I can't wait to start working for him.'' Asked what he'll bring to the Browns, Frye said: ``I'm a competitor, pretty fearless, not scared to run the ball. The No. 1 job of the quarterback is to make plays and win games. I love to play. I spend hours working hard and trying to achieve my goals. I'll take the same work ethic into the NFL.'' Frye said he and one of his father's friends used to share season tickets at Municipal Stadium. But he's never been to the new stadium. ``In college we practice on Sunday,'' he said. ``I can't wait to see it tomorrow.'' As for running out in front of the hometown fans, perhaps in the preseason opener Aug. 13, Frye said: ``I can't wait. I haven't even thought about that. I'm not looking too far ahead. I've got to get ready to play before I think about running out of the tunnel in Cleveland.''
  19. http://clevelandbrowns.com/news_room/news/arts/4210.0.html "Savage stopped short of naming Frye the team's sure-fire quarterback of the future, but he was excited about adding the former University of Akron star. "He's a film rat and a gym rat," Savage said. "This kid is a winner. He's blue collar. He fits the area." "We have high expectations for (Frye)," Rees said. "But we want to be realistic on where he gets as far as his development." Savage said the acquisition of Frye in the third round means the Browns will likely trade one of their second-year quarterbacks, Luke McCown or Josh Harris, on Sunday. McCown was picked in the fourth round last year; Harris was picked in the sixth round by Baltimore and was signed by the Browns off the Baltimore practice squad in December." Picture this.. Charlie and the Browns vs Big Ben and the Steelers 2X a year... will be fun... Anybody want to discuss how having Charlie go the Browns will affect local recruiting for JD??? Congrats to Charlie and what a major plus today for Akron football!!!

  21. Kangaroo Craig... you do agree then that playing @ Miami and @ BG in 2 out of 3 weeks is a meat grinder??? Bad enough we have to play them both away but this schedule is practically back-to-back on top of it... that's a killer.... The good news is that, barring expansion and re-alignment next year... we get Miami and BG at home for 2006.

Can I assume ESPN2 had something to say about that?? Second. Look at the meat grinder in the middle of the season -- @ Miami, Army at home then @ BG... should have put a bye in there somewhere....
  23. Our problem is reputation... It will take several years of near misses before we will overcome the poor reputation we have spent decades creating. Until we actually win it on the field or on the court, we will always be like the last kid picked for the dodgeball team. It's not fair but true. WMU and Can't State got NIT bids because of previous successes. Buffalo got one because the national press gushed all over them all season long. I doubt that we would have got an invite even had we defeated WMU and lost in the Semis to Buffalo.. maybe had we made the MACC game. We still have to prove we belong -- I think the Zips will go into football and basketball seasons next year with a lot of motivation to prove they belong. The MAC should be put on notice... Akron is a gimme no longer and is building toward something long-suffering Zips fans could only have dreamed about a few short years ago... Championships. As a fan and alum, I would like to thank JD and KD for all the hard work and fun and excitement they brought back to campus this past year. And MT for having the good sense to hire these guys. I can't believe I am gong to day this.. but I am really looking forward to this fall!! GO ZIPS!!
