If we can't get a local kid whose father is a coach here, that says a lot about our program.I understand if he was being recruited by all the big boys. However, he isn't and Akron still may lose himAs for going to Hawaii over Akron. Well, I am pretty sure that Hawaii would offer all those guys that UM, OSU, ND, PSU, etc offer. However, they can't get them away from the big guys.Regarding Michigan State being the leading contender: Last I checked, Will had just two offers -- Akron and Hawai'i. Has that changed?

I get that maybe once a year.
If UA has your current address and you are an alum, you should be receiving the "Akron" magazine which has lots of stories about the academic and sports achievements and the new campus upgrades, stories about UA alumni, as well as current staff and faculty.GP1, I see your point, and it is a good one. The MAC is a poor quality conference. There is a bad perception about teams affiliated with it, and it is almost totally justified. But Akron is stuck in it until they can prove that they belong somewhere better, and then you would have to find another conference actually willing to take them in. Growing the Z-Fund would be great, but there is a problem: there is no true alumni base. The people here, the season ticket holders, and a few successful businessmen are all we have. Hardly anybody is proud of their University of Akron degree. Most people forget that they ever came here. There are too many causes to list for that, not the least of which is that UA was not always the university it is now. The campus was just a cluster of tan buildings seperated by busy streets, it was a commutter college in the truest sense of the word. That's where marketing comes in. It needs to remind our alumni base that they are UA alumni. Get them on campus to show how far things have come. Make up fake achievement awards to get them here if you have to. They might find something to actually be proud of. Send out letters with updates of how our sports teams are doing. I am willing to bet that 99% of UA alumni have no idea that our Mens Soccer team is in the NCAA tourney and I bet most of them have no idea that our b-ball team had 26 wins last season. Apathy can be cured through education, and its up the marketing people to be the educators because the alumni won't do it themselves. -
Certainly is.I'm gonna say this is KD's best recruiting class yet. We added size and athleticism. We also addressed many areas. This is a program going in the right direction. -
Actually at many of the major schools, if a coach has too many 8-4 or 9-3 seasons he will be fired.I don't think anyone is asking for a NC or even a top 20 team. We are merely asking for a respectable and entertaining team to watch. We are aksing for a team that consistently beats the teams they should beat. Yes, there are upsets. However, there isn't usually 4-5 the same season. Once that happens, they aren't upsets. Here at Akron most of us would be happy with 8-4 and crazy about 9-3. I don't think that being negative because we aren't even a 500 team is a bad thing unless you are used to losing and accept it.We finished 2005 at 7-6 after the bowl game. Everyone called that a great year for Akron.........Talk aboiut being happy with mediocrity. If any national powers had consecutive 7-6 seasons, the coach would be gone in a heartbeat. Here at Akron we are happy about it.7-6 should be a down year/rebuilding year at UA. Not a good year. I couldn't believe early in the year when people called this a rebuilding year. What?????????????????????????????????? Did we go 8-4 or better last year? Did we win the MAC?How can you have a rebuilding year after a year that you were not very good? That is a losers mentality. We really need to change that. I am not calling for JD's head. He is a young coach that I think is learning on the job. Many great coaches took more than 5 years before they started winning. To call out posters and say they are being negative is absurd. If you want to see negative, go to other teams boards that are whining because they only beat a team by 21 points when they think it should have been more. Or they lose one game and are calling for a coordinators head. Not all negative talk is bad. Some of it is reality.
Negative talk on this board? You make it sound like it is a crime for wanting more.......no expecting more, because that is what we should be doing. Sounds like you want us to sugar coat things. We both want success but you can't get there unless you acknowledge your weaknesses and mistakes. We wanna be big time you gotta act big time, expect big time, but at the very least you should minimize mistake, no holdings, dropped passes, redundant screens, etc. These are all easy fixes!!!!!I remember when Bill Snyder Kansas State's head coach at the time, came into our locker room after we just got our heads kicked in by his team, said that they were once where we are, and to stick to doing the right things, work hard, and not just believe but know you are better than your opponent, don't EVER settle for less.If you are used to a Faust 1-11 season a L.O. 2-10 season saying 7-5 is great is settling, it's settling for good when you should strive to be great. Saying stuff like *in a mopey voice* "Well we were 3-2 at half with OSU and barely lost to Temple, Buffalo, Miami, and Central. We could be 8-4!!Could be 8-4 don't sell tickets, get better recruits, or go to bowl games!!! The teams 8-4 or better like OSU, Indiana, UConn, Central ya know the teams we lost to?!! Go to bowl games, get better recruits, and don't have to fudge ticket sale numbers to keep D1 status. Teams like Louisville, Kansas St. Boise St., Hawaii, stop settling. Like we should too.I am also tired of the negative comments on this board. I come to this board to talk to Zips fans not hear the team, coaches, and program be constantly put down. It's like I'm talking to our worst enemies! I'm a Zips fan through good and bad. Maybe some of you need to try supporting your team and not being so critical. Go Zips!!!!! -
Is he practicing?B. McKNIGHT IS WAITING TO BECOME ELIGABLE-- PAPERWORK FROM SOME BUREAUCRAT IN COLUMBUS WAS LATE GETTING SOME PAPER TO U OF A, & BUREAUCRATS AT U OF A STUCK TO THE LETTER LOF THE CALENDAR. SOME HELP, HUH? AND THIS AGE OF ALMOST INSTANT COMMUNICATION! -
What is the status of the younger McNight?
I believe that he would not be eligible until Dec 19th. So he wasn't dressed but that should not mean anything. With Ronnie having chest pains which is really scary, I hope Roberts is able to help.
Is Roberts on the team?In case anyone was wondering, 71-51 Zips, final. We should've won by more. It's nice to know we can play like crap and still win. I like McNees at PG, he sees the floor well and shoots well. Defense appears to be his liability. We could be set at PG for a good bit with McNees, Roberts and Steward. Wood was nearly absent as well. I think Bardo played maybe 4 minutes. It showed in the rebounding. Zips will be hard-pressed on the boards well into the year if Bardo doesnt show something soon. Overall a C-minus for the team. Team plays well and we win by 40. I recall at one point in the second half having 3 consecutive turnovers on offense. That's just unacceptable. We play like this monday and we lose by double digits to Temple. There appeared to be about 2,500 in attendance. Not bad for a cold night and crappy competition. Hopefully our smallest crowd of the year. I'd like to see 3-4k vs Temple. Everyone bring a friend!P.S. What's with people showing up to the game in Maryland gear? -
Very sad to hear. Hopefully he will be back next season.Thoughts and prayers to the family of the young soldier...I feel so sorry for the family of the young soldier who was killed in the accident. I wish a speedy recovery to Odofin. -
Come on now. We could have easily been 9-3.jd is now losing to teams like buffalo, and temple. we are one of the worst teams in probably the second worse conference.that makes us one of the worst teams in the nation.how is that going up?? -

I know Givens shows a verbal on scout or rivals, but is he really coming here? This is waaaayyy too fast. If this were the case, that would mean that they already had planned on firing JD weeks ago and already have had contact with this other coach. I find that hard to believe.I would think there would be some type of search to find the best available talent. Not just pick 1 guy and go with him. However, if this is true, it could end up being good. This is much better for recruiting to get a guy in here right away instead of having to wait until January. Hopefully, if true, this guy is the right guy.
That's the best we could do with the nations top (pending) facilities? Nothing against coach Matthews, but if this rumor is true then we should be able to get someone with a better overall record.Mack has already identified his new coach, former UTEP assistant and current James Madison Head Coach Mickey Matthews. -
Accoridng to Scout. He only had offers from E. Michigan, W. Michigan and UA.The others were all interest. There is a big difference between an offer and interest.Looks like recruiting is finally starting to pick up. We have a long way to go before we can catch up with Temple and Miami, though. Do you think that the two games on ESPN2 helped at all? I'm surethe win over OU helped quite a bit. -
This is the problem when you watch teams only occasionally. You may watch a game they lose and think they are bad. The thing is that all teams have a bad game. I feel that once Dixon went out that the team was down and out. When your star player gets injured it affects the rest of the team.Great teams sometimes lose. It doesn't mean that they aren't better than the other team. It means on that one particular night they weren't very good, and the other team was.Stanford is not better than USC. Illinois is not better than OSU. Kentucky is not better than LSU. The list goes on and on.The 1985 Dolphins were not better than the 1985 Bears. When you are a top ranked team you are getting the opponents best every game. Even the best teams can't be ready for every game. That is why, IMHO, we need a playoff in DI.I 100% agree Oregon looked bad last night. However, if you would have watched them numerous other times, like I have , you would know that they are much better than they showed last night.
Ditto here. I told my son that Oregon looked like Akron now that their Heisman-candidate QB is on the bench with a bum knee. What a difference a player (or two) with athletic/leadership ability can make. Too bad for Oregon. I was hoping to see them stay in the hunt for the championship game if for no other reason than a change of pace from the usual big-name suspects that usually bubble to the top.I was watching the same game and thinking the same thing. So do you think that if we had Dixon at QB, will we be ranked #2? -
Typical coach speak.Just listened to JD on ZipsLive. When asked what Akron would be doing in practice to try to establish some offensive consistency before we play CMU, he answered "Oh, the same things we have been doing" Newsflush JD: whatever you have been doing isn't working. It's time to try something else. You have absolutely nothing to lose this game. -
I really hope that after having a year in the program and having some good reps in springball that Matt Rogers becomes the answer for UA.I believe that UA has the 2 worst QB's in all of college football.I haven't seen every college QB, but I can't believe there can be any worse than what we have.
Jackson looks completely lost when he is in the game. He looks like a true freshman thrown into a NC game. He is clueless.Jacq. is just horrible. His passes float and he throws into coverage. He underthrows every pass. He is also a statue in the pocket. He doesn't roll out or create any type of confusion for the defense. He must have cement in his shoes. It seems like the other team must have 20 guys playing defense. That is the only way that every receiver that he throws to can be triple covered. It seems like he sees any open receiver, but wants to thread it between 3 guys instead. He doesn't read the defense. He doesn't work down his progressions. It seems like he has a primary receiver and he will throw to him no matter what. It hurts to watch. This makes me long for the days of Andy Kubic and Mark Friday.....

I like it too. I love the flame ball going up and in. That was nice.
I like it ..............So I was browsing around Youtube and to my suprise I found this video, which happened to play right before the Zips were introduced on the floor on Thursday against Walsh. I think it might be played before every home game.University of Akron Psyche:thumb:

It sucks when you can only get verbals from guys that won't qualify.I know that was low. I apologize.Ours looks the weakest?Of course I know these ratings don't really mean a whole lot, but our total number is one of the lowest also. -
This thread is amazing. I have usually stayed out of the CF conversations, because I wasn't sure how he would do in the NFL.Plus, I liked him when he was at QB for UA. I felt confident in the offense with him at QB.However, it is hilarious how some posters are giving every excuse in the world why DA is doing so much better than CF did.Wow, after the first game of the year, everyone said how bad this team was and how the o-line sucked and they had no offensive weapons. Now people are saying that CF didn't have the same line and weapons that DA does. That is BS.Tucker is the only difference. Sorry, but he isn't Jonathan Ogden or Orlando Pace. One of the BIGGEST complaints about CF was that he held the ball too long and that resulted in many of the sacks. The CF lovers said it was the o-lines fault. Well, that has obviously proved to be wrong. I knew this thread would eventually come up and that the lovers would defend him to the world. I am still amazed at how blind some posters are.I know skippy boy will come here and bash me now, because that is all he can do. Also, since I am a grad of UA and another school, that makes me no fan of UA. I know this skippy, no need to reitterate your childish behavior.
Me, too. Then we wouldn't have to worry about the NFL broadcast blackouts...... I hope they move again. -
SGM, I was wondering how long it would take you to post this. DA is looking good. I am just happy that the Clowns have a QB.BTW, since you are a Browns fan, I hope you live in Cleveland.Anderson in 8 games (5-2 as starter) 58% (28th)2108 yards (6th)264 YPG (7th)8.2 Y/A (4th)17 TD (3rd)9 INT91.7 RAT (9th)Sacked 8 times (T-1st)Meanwhile, Frye is an inactive, 3rd string quarterbackThis isn't to bash Frye fans - I respect and understand your support for the guy through thick and thin, and can understand why some put on some rose colored glasses during the QB controversy. But to those who said Anderson sucked, that the Browns front office had no idea what they were doing, that Frye was so much better than Anderson, that I didn't know a thing about football because I thought DA was better than Frye...What do you all think now? -
I don't know if it is JD lack of coaching ability or if it is his terrible assistants. Of sourse he is responsible for the assistants too. This team lacks so many things. Discipline, creativity, development, talent. Why were the starters still in the game during the 4th quarter? The Zips have a game in 5 days and there waszero chance of a come back. Why not let the second team kids play for a quarter. Also how about the freshman playing special teams getting more PT with the defense. They need the experience for next season.JD looked lost on the sidelines evertime they showed him. And they showed him a lot!!!!!!After evey game when JD talks about the game to me he sounds like a fan they has no control over the game. He is what he said last night. "I thought the DB's played to loose coverage in the first half" Ok here is a clue you are the freaking coach after the first BG drive that was pretty aparent. Walk your ass over to the D-Coordinator and them him Hey play tighter coverage on the BG WR. BG ran the same passing plays all night long. Zero adjustments were made by the Zips. Tell me who is coaching this team because I really can't tell. -
There is a difference between recruiting at risk student athletes and recruiting guys that have no chance of qualifyling.JD has recruited quite a few guys that never had a chance of qualifying. Many teams take at risk students. However, they at least have a chance at qualifying. Most of the guys that don't qualify don't even make it the following year. Being a prop 48 is one thing, but never even making it at all is pathetic. This is what JD's problem is. It's not that these guys aren't qualifying as Freshman, it's that they never see the field.JD needs to find a way to retake this team. He has completely lost this team. He has to get it back.GP1...your post about recruiting at-risk athletes is absolutely ABSOLUTELY correct. LO used to pride himself on getting "good kids" who were "good academically", and he proceeded to lose 25 more games than we won over a 9-year period. You need to get the best athletes that you can, and hope that you can help them stay eligible. We are a program that can afford to take those risks to get a blue-chipper, and we should continue to do so. -
It almost seems like the team has quit on him. This team is getting worse as the season goes on. it should be getting better.OK, I've been on the fence for a while, but who here thinks that JD is REALLY the guy we want to lead this team into the new stadium? I, for one, want him fired after this season. This performance is pathetic. -
I agree. However, if we had any "insiders" we would know also. Other boards have people that are very close to the program and know what is going on. Here, we don't even have anyone that can tell is if someone is or isn't on the team.
If we had a real newpaper in town everyone would know why CJ7...the QB that beat K.e.n.t...isn't on the field. But we don't, so we don't. Nice job, DL Morgan.I've been told by someone close to the program that coach Moorhead is a very strict guy. Once you get on his bad side, he doesn't forget. CJ7 seems to have put himself into the doghouse and there is no relief in sight.Could you imagine being in Columbus...and Troy Smith beats Michigan in September (for argument's sake)...and sits on the bench the rest of the season...and no reporter ever asks "What gives?" to Tressel at any point through October?
-
Captain, Nice post. I agree 100%.Perhaps if we can get a good/elegible recruiting class this year things will start to turn around.JD is a young coach. I am sure he is learning as he goes too.
Howard Cosell used to have a show on am radio called "Speaking of Everything."I guess this is my version.Speaking of the Buffalo game....Who'da thunk in August that we'd take a methodical beating from Buffalo? Give Turner Gill credit...he's done in 1.5 years what we've been waiting to see from JD for four, right? We'll...maybe not. See, Gill is winning with the previous coach's players, not his own recruits. I guess we need to see what the guy can do in year #4 before we can call him a great coach. At least that seems to be the popular logic on the board? And Speaking of Lee Owens...I remember early in Owens' tenure he was saddled with some horrific QB play. Junko...who knows who the other guys were, but they were absolutely atrocious. Owens pulled Greg Gromek's redshirt and started him the final four games. I think we won all four? So with that, I say...Speaking of Carlton Jackson...What can it hurt to put the guy in? Unless he knocked off a liquor store, or has a GPA in the Bluto Blutarski-range, I think the guy has served his time and needs to get back on the field. He beat K.e.n.t. He moved the ball against Indiana. I'm tired of seeing mediocre QB play. And Speaking of CJ11...The guy's play is still lackluster. But he is improving from game-to-game. It just seems like, when we need a big play, he blows it. Wastes a throw downfield on 4th and 10. Plunges into the line on 3rd and 3. Throws the errant pass to wide open WR's when we need it most. But the Zips offensive struggles are far from all his fault.Speaking of Bryan Williams and Alex AllenBryan Williams drops a sure 33 yard TD pass. With the Zips small margin for error, you simply can't do that. Alex Allen drops a sweep toss at the 5 yard line that's a sure 6 points. That's not on CJ11. The Buffalo loss was a "team loss."And Speaking of Dennis KennedyWhere is this guy in goal line situations? That's where he's "money." Just ask NC State. If Allen is going to be dropping the ball in the red zone, my vote is to use DK. Unless he's injured. And Speaking of Red Zone ProblemsJesus...Can our offense have any less confidence the closer we get to the goal line. A couple weeks ago we were at the 5 yard line and we threw on four consecutive downs. This week, we have 1st and 5 from the 8 yard line and we run every down? Two diametrically opposed strategies...but the same result. It sucked to watch Buffalo methodically push the ball into the endzone whenever they got close. And we turn into Laurel and Hardy. And Speaking of the Defense...To me, it was another decent effort by the defense. Not great...the DB's surrendered 3 TD passes on only 14 attempts from the Buffalo QB...but at SOME point the offense has to give you a chance. Giving up 26 points should be sufficient to win a football game in 2007. Even against a vastly improved team like Buffalo. And Speaking of Buffalo...This was their 4th game of the year at home. Conversely, through November 6th, the Zips will have had a whopping two games at the Rubber Bowl. TWO! What an unfair schedule! What other team in the nation had the odds stacked against them like that? Pick on CJ11...the defense, the staff, the recruiting, whatever. The year the Lee Owens supporters gloat over his gaudy 7-5 record, the guy had SIX home games, and two were against bad 1-AA schools! Five of those six were held prior to October 18th!Speaking of JD and Staff...I am really shocked...baffled...astounded at the "Fire the Coach" talk going on. The guy hasn't finished his 4th season...he's won a championship...been to a bowl...and we need new blood? Come on. His initial recruiting classes had substandard player retention. No doubt. Any you can see it's effects this year. Someone posted that in the Temple game, Temple played 10 more players than Akron. That's because they were deeper. Most teams are. But the 2007 recruiting class, the vast majority of whom are being red shirted, is a stellar one. Not the fool's gold of the 2006 class, but legit stuff. If JD can back it up with another solid class in 2008, the depth issues we've seen manifest themselves in the 2nd half of most games, should disappear immediately. What do I want to see out of the staff from here on out? To be honest, our young offense has progressed tremendously over the past several weeks. But we aren't putting the ball in the endzone. And that is a 50/50 blame split amongst the players and coaches. That MUST change. We need a swagger in the red zone. That comes from the QB, IMO.BG is bad. OU is terrible. Those are two games we simply must suck-it-up and win. I also want to see a win vs. either Miami or CMU. Miami is a decent team, but certainly not the Rotlisberger-led juggernaut of the early 2000's. A motivated Zips team can win in Oxford. CMU? I saw how we ended the season against WMU last year. I don't want to see that again. CMU gave up 70 points to Clemson. We stop LeFever and we win. I want to see the staff and team finish the season strong. Despite the BS schedule, 6-6, with continued improvement, should be expected. And speaking of the end of the season...My lunch break has ended.
