  1. So Captain, let me get this straight. Being the great big Zips fan that you are, you wouldn't want to take Oden and that "millions of dollars" he could generate for the UA program for 1 year. You don't want a "sham" of a student that is only there to make the program money. I wonder if our AD and coaches would agree with you.In a nutshell, that is what you just implied. Please tell me I am misinterpreting your explanation. I know you are pretty good with words and will find a way to get out of that, but that is what you implied.
Nope. I like the type of student-athlete the MAC typically attracts. If I really liked the "Oden/Durant-type" I wouldn't spend the time I do on this board supporting the Zips. Would the Zips staff take an "Oden/Durant-type?" I don't see that question ever being a realistic one. It will never happen at UA. If they want to recruit that type of player, then they'll prove it one day by leaving Akron and moving on to one of the NCAA/NBA developmental schools/programs. It would be a lot easier (to root for a "machine")...that's for sure. But it isn't what I personally prefer.
Well Cap, I don't know if you are giving a BS answer to cover up the hippocrasy or if you are being honest. However, knowing what I know of you I will assume you are being honest. I don't know how many Zips fans will admittedly agree with you, but that doesn't matter.I don't believe getting 1-2 players of that caliber turns you into a "machine". However, the money and exposure would be nice.I will admit, I admire your integrity. You are a better person than I am.
  2. As for Oden, that is ridiculous. You guys would have taken him for 1 year and you know it. Don't even try to deny it.
Personally, although you seem to know me better than myself, I would not have taken Oden. The one, one-and-done situation I liked was Larry Hughes. He could have jumped straight to the NBA, but he wanted to stay at home for a year and play in front of his family. And to help the Bilikins' program. That was classy.Say LeBron James wanted to help KD out, and wanted to play basketball in his home town with his high school friends for a year. I would have accepted that. Helping out a mentor from his youth, helping out his hometown program, turning down the NBA to do so (like Hughes, he had the option of turning pro or going to college)...that would have been borderline "noble." To me this is different than the OSU/Oden relationship, where Oden was specifically recruited from out-of-state to be a "student" for 1/2 a year. Getting into a recruiting war over 1-and-done players is a crime. It has nothing to do with collegiate athletics and all to do with money.OSU made millions of dollars from Oden and all it cost them was two quarters worth of out-of-state tuition scholarship money. It was a great business decision. But Oden was a sham student athlete. Given the choice...give me the Cedrick Middleton's of the world any day of the week.

I think the majority, except gmann and skip and a few others would say, "YES, GIVE US A BIG NAME PLAYER THAT WILL ONLY BE HERE FOR A YEAR, BUT WILL PUT US ON THE MAP AND EARN MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR OUR UNIVERSITY"I would vote yes to that every day of the week. I guess I am just crazy that way.
  3. Yeah, but if you talk to any of their fans, they "need" all that money.
They do need the money. If they are going to recruit kids like Ted Ginn J., who are closer to being retarded than normal, then they need $52,000 a year tutors to help them.
Yet amazingly, he qualified to play. Something most of JD's recruits can't say. The tutoring starts after they qualify, not before....I know, I know, they pay someone to take the tests for them so they qualify, :chair: Does it make some of you feel better about UA by bashing others? I really don't get it.
  4. give me a break.we spent 100 million on a practice facility.how many players has jd recruited that never even made it to akron.im a zips fan but i think some zips fans need to look in the mirror.you do not think akron would have took oden for one year.ck do you even know the guy.from what i have heard he is a pretty humble guy that has not ever been into trouble.you attack the kid for going to the pros and taking millions of dollars.like any body on this board would not leave school for that.give me a break.akron is no different than any other school when it comes athletics.
Absolutely true. This is Business 101 people. Teams that make all the money get to spend more money....The teams that are on national TV every week with huge audiences watching them and sell out 100,000 seat stadiums every week have just a tad bit more money to spend than teams that even the locals don't watch and can't put more than 15,000 butts in the seats consistently.I agree, it isn't fair and it makes an uneven playing field. However, college sports is a business. That is how business works. As for Oden, that is ridiculous. You guys would have taken him for 1 year and you know it. Don't even try to deny it.There will be much more of this 1 year crap knowing that the straight to the NBA from high school option is no longer available.
  5. Besides Marshall, who packed their stadium, and was a perennial winner, has anyone else from the MAC ever been courted by a big conference? NO. Most of us reside in the states of Ohio and Michigan, where OSU and MU severely impact our ability to attract attention.
Skip-Zip, I do believe that Toledo sometimes comes up as a potential target for Conference USA. I'm not sure how serious this ever gets, but I've seen it on more than one occasion. The "market size" and "growth potential" reasons the Big East added Cincy and USF are the same reasons why the MAC added Buffalo over some football programs that were obviously farther along at the time of this expansion. We may be getting pretty close to witnessing the wisdom of this move very soon. 'eguins will be shaking on his iceberg over that
Sorry, but I disagree that OSU and UM affect UA getting attention.Ohio is a large state. There is room for multiple large programs.Michigan State still draws huge in Michigan. There is Pitt and Penn State in PennsylvaniaIndiana has Multiple big programsIllinois has multiple big program.I won't mention Texas, Florida and California because they are bigger states. If Akron became a "CONSTANT" winner, they would draw. Look at how many people drove to the MCB. There were more Akron fans there than at home games. People will go see a winner. This same old 500 or below and losing to teams UA should beat, won't draw what is needed. We have a large base to work with. Akron just needs to win "CONSISTENTLY" and everything else will fall into place.
  6. Found this while researching why JD thinks this defense is a good idea. If it's to hard to recruit big athletic D-linemen, then the 3-3-5 is the exact opposite of the defense we want to be playing.I personally like the 4-2-5, if we want 5 DBs out on the field.http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=257165
The 3-3-5 is like any other defense in football. If you have the talent to play it you can be very good at it. If you don't have the talent, it will look like crap. The 3-3-5 depends on the d-line neutralizing the o-line so the linebackers can make more plays. Just like the 3-4Unfortunately we don't have an overly strong, not to mention deep, d-line. Therefore, our linebackers can't do their job. Also the linebackers we do have aren't very fast. Next year having Bain and Sewell back along with Pendleton and some of these freshman a little more experienced, the defense should look better. Of course, all but 1 guy in the secondary will be gone so that will hurt. The problem Akron has with the 3-3-5 is the same problem the Browns have with the 3-4. That is the d-line.The Browns don't have any quality d-lineman. Their NT is 145 years old and the rest of the guys were low picks or undrafted.IF Akron can get some quality d-lineman along with some quicker lb's, the 3-3-5 will work.
  7. I know things are pretty heated right now, and for good reason. Our program is at a crossroads and every game seems pivotal. The loss to Temple was eye opening and I have HATED THIS OFFENSIVE SCHEME since the spring game.......butisn't it great to have this forum? There is a groundswell of fans who are moving past the era of apathy, and more people are actually giving a damn about Zips football. This is positive. When Akron used to lose in creative and unbelievable ways back in the 90's, I had nowhere to vent and would call the athletic office and leave drunk and angry messages on their voicemail lol. I felt like my few friends and I were the only ones who really cared about the games!!!! Everyone sitting around us at the Rubber Bowl was dead quiet and motionless, even when Akron would make tremendous plays. For so long The Beacon Journal wouldn't write anything critical at all about the team and that just perpetuated the apathy. So even though a lot of us are arguing over all of this, it's still at the very least a good sign that people care. Welcome new posters to the forum and try and keep things above the belt and we'll get even more fans. We're all in the same boat here.
Right on.When I first visited this site there was about 4 posters.
  8. I think just about everyone believes that they make the star ratings based on what schools are in the recruiting battle. It would be pretty difficult for so many high school kids to truly get evaluated.
A stat I heard this weekend was that 56% of the picks in the NFL draft's first two rounds this year were less than "3-stars" out of high school. Take it for what it's worth.
I wouldn't doubt that at all. Stars mean nothing. Look at the offers a kid has. If he has offers from all of the big major schools, he is probably a player.Their are countless players that were unheralded that were #1 draft picks.Part of being a great coach is finding the diamonds in the rough.I could give you quite a few examples of 1 school, but I would get bashed for it so I won't bother.
  9. Let's all remember that JD was not hired by Mack and is not Mack's guy, so this is not out of the realm of possibility if the Zips go into the tank. What are some thoughts?4 Seasons prior to JD2000: 6-5 (5-1) 2001: 4-7 (4-4) 2002: 4-8 (3-5) 2003: 7-5 (5-3) TOTAL: 21-25 (17-13)JD's First 4 Seasons2004: 6-5 (6-2) 2005: 7-6 (5-3) 2006: 5-7 (3-5)2007: 3-4 (2-2)TOTAL: 21-22 (16-12)Excuse me if I'm not impressed. It may anger some of you to hear this.... but we've really seen no improvement whatsoever from Lee Owens to JD Brookhart.... and JD Brookhart has a helluva lot more to pitch Akron with to recruits than ole Lee O ever did. Not saying Lee O was the greatest coach in the history of College Football.... but if you're objective neither is JD Brookhart. I say give him one more year to make some progress after this season and if not then.... :nutkick: BUH-BYE.
No, Let him at least work through hi contract before making that decision.
  10. Upsets happen. However, this is ridiculous. We lose games every year that we should win. When have we beaten anyone that we were large underdogs to? I think Marshall was the last time....Pretty sad. IMHO
Way back in October of 2006. snapshot219mq2.png
What was NCSU record last year????Just because a team is in a BCS conference doesn't make them a good team...
  11. I spent a few minutes talking to Ryan Andrick. He had been in touch with KD over the summer and let KD know he was available to help if needed. Last Friday's practice was "his first day on the job." Ryan wasn't sure what his responsibilities would be and I didn't ask whether it was a paid position or not. Ryan is still teaching in the Springfield school system but is no longer coaching. I shook Steve Swiech's hand and told him it was nice to have him at Akron and that I appreciated his enthusiasm for wanting to be here. HUGE hands, just like the rest of him. As one other poster said, we've got truly BIG to go with tall in this one. Seems to be a really nice guy. Seeing the guys again Friday night and watching that mess Saturday night has me excited about the upcoming basketball season.
How is Bardo looking? Has he improved his offense? Also, what about Darryl Roberts?
  12. :gun: anyone who thnks that mack rhoades and jd brokenhart have sympathetic connection to AKRON are morons...they are using AKRON as did FAUST to pad their resumes and move on..rhoades doesn't have any connect with the fans and is a young punk who wants to make money...brokenhart is trying to live out every insurance salesman's dream by coaching football...ya the new stadium may be nice be neither rhoades nor brokenhart have anything to do with it..its WAY above THEM...get 'em out of here!
Lee, chill out dude.....Such is the life of a mid-major..
  13. Might get slow without a game this week, but I noticed something this morning that could very well play to our advantage.Buffalo plays a road game at Syracuse this weekend. Sure, the Orangemen are not the greatest, but we are going to get to catch Buffalo after they've played in a road game that will likely be very physically demanding. And even if Buffalo pulls off the upset? We catch them after an emotionally draining game. And, if anyone remembers the letdown we had the week after beating NC State last year, you know how this can happen. Either way, I think we will be playing them under very favorable circumstances for us. Also....is anyone else surprised that Can't State is a 5.5 point favorite to beat Bowling Green this weekend?
I think having a week off to rest up and get healthy, combined with working on some weaknesses is the best thing going. The Can't starters had a bye week last week so maybe they are refreshed and that is the reason they are favorites. :screwks:
  14. Almost beat is the greatest excuse in the history of sports. We lost to so and so who almost beat so and so who almost beat so and so, etc.... :mad_flame:Not calling for JD's head. However, this has gone on long enough. Things need to change. He is the coach. He recruits the players, he hires the coaches, he is the HEAD COACH. Everything falls on him. This is his team and his staff. Being close to a win isn't a win.
I would agree with your last paragraph, although I don't think I'm ready, as of now, to call for JD's head. HE is the head coach, and as such needs to hire the right people to lead this team. The 3rd and 2 that we didn't make was one BIG coaching mistake. When a couple of half-drunk 40 somethings sitting a few rows below the coaches box can see what the opposing coaches are doing and our coaches in the box can't, something's wrong. We ran right up the gut into a blitz. Why? Because we were trying to run the clock out. Temple knew that and played their defense accordingly. But our coaches obviously were either too stubborn or too smug to change.
I never called for JD's or any other coaches head. I said things need to change. That could mean players, philosophy or any number of things. I personally don't feel a coaching change will help. We need stability in this program. There have been quite a few highly regarded coaches that started out having ot rough and then righted the ship.I just thought that be year 4 we would be farther along than we are....
  15. LOL "Pot calling the kettle black"You are absolutely the biggest waste on here. Oh wait that might have hurt your buckeye loving feelings.Where are my excuses? That Temple proved they could ball before they even played us? That all of you Big 10 loving wannabes know nothing of what MAC football is? That I think you should call out the O-Coordinator Moorehead for lack of offensive production? If a change doesn't occur then you can say JD isn't doing his job, but to me the fact that he even has us in contention (which we still are in case you didn't notice) is quite impressive considering the inexperience of offense. Oh wait you will call tha than excuse too, because a good coach can make anything happen when he wants it too, he is not at the mercy of teams that have played longer and understand how to win. Yeah I'm excuse ridden.Hell sorry I hurt your feelings Bucky.
Point proven, Thank you, See part of your problem, and you certainly have a problem, is that you can't tell the difference between people being critical fans and people giving up and not being fans. Those of us that are upset are fans that care. The people that have the problem are the people that are gone because the team is playing poorly. Guess what, even fans of winning teams complain about the team. It's part of sports. You attack because you have no other way to express yourself. If you read my posts, you will see I never called out any coach. I never mentioned Moorheads name. I said Brookhart is responsible. Am I wrong?????????????????????????You are a disgrace to this board and to Zip fans....You are a complete and utter tool. You should go take a football 101 class, because you don't get it..MAC football. Give me a break. This is college football. We are young on the o-line. So are many other teams too.is Akron the only school that graduates players?Sorry to hurt your feelings Mrs. Brookhart.Big10 wannabe. (LOL). You show your jealousy all the time. Throw out the OSU card, because that is all you have. Once again having to bring them up. I certainly never mentioned them.Since you are so obsessed with OSU maybe you should start cheering them on. Like I said what a tool.....................................Go away little man. You are a complete and utter disgrace.................................I am through stooping to your level. You are a waste of my time and of cyberspace...Good day Mrs Brookhart.Reply all you want and call me all the names you want. After all, I know that is all you have. You have no facts, and you can't discuss anything logically. All you do is attack. This board was so much better before you jumped on the bandwagon.I am finished with you..... Cry, cry, cry...................
  16. That's about the response I expected. However, you are wrong. Let's see I donate to a school, however, the people fromt hat school say I am no fan and call me names.Right, I am sure noone would care.
That's about the response I would expect from you.Making excuses.
The king of excuses calling someone else an excuse maker. What a tool.....
  17. Ah see, look at all of you Butt Monkeys. You jump on me because I call you out for being negative after a loss to Temple. Temple who almost beat UConn who shelled us, Temple who almost beat BGSU.The conference is full of teams that can on any given saturday (or wednesday, or thursday) beat any other team. But we lose one MAC game and it's "off with his head" and every other negative comment one can come up with.I didn't say don't criticize, I never said be a bunch of "are team is the greatest no matter what you say" tards. No I said don't be negative about the season or a young team in a conference where anything can happen. If you read what I wrote I was critical of Moorehead. His play calling is the least inspired offense I have seen since the advent of the forward pass. Which I am beginning to think he happens to be unaware of the fact that it exists. But I am not throwing in the chips. I am not saying this team is horrible. This team is young. How much that plays into the play calling is not something anyone of us can determine.I said stop calling for JD's head. "What has he done for us lately?" He has us 3-4 2-1 in the MAC better then anyone could have expected. He has managed to qualify us for two Bowl games. Quit saying "if CJ7 was playing we'd be winning" would we? He certainly didn't do much to stake his claim. A leader does what is needed and sets an example. Showing up late and throwing a hissy fit because you were disciplined is not being a leader. We won't 3 years of CJ11, he will end up being a back up next year.Did I say stop giving your opinions? No, I said quit acting like losing to Temple is the end of the world. Stop the negativity. That's all I said. The forum was for the discussion of what direction should take, who is better at what position, who new recruits are. Not to be a bunch of whiney losers like those Can't State fans.
Almost beat is the greatest excuse in the history of sports. We lost to so and so who almost beat so and so who almost beat so and so, etc.... :mad_flame:Not calling for JD's head. 18. I think everybody is tired of those who have no ambitions and enjoy the mediocre status of their team. Not only that, but also are cocky enough to come out and call others names.I would understand and respect someone who says: it was bad loss, the coaches did not do a great job but this is still our team and we should support them now and keep going to the games until the end of the season when we re-evaluate them. But for you to tell me that i should shut my mouth and never complain about anything is not helping at all :nono:
Bingo.....If you don't think this team is great, you are a Buttmonkey. If people don't want to discuss the bad along with the good, then stay away. You are too big of a homer. When the team starts going 9-3, 8-4 and beating teams they should beat on a regular basis, then you can get upset when fans come out of the woodwork to complain. However, to get upset with fans because they are they are sick of the same old BS year after year is crazy.Upsets happen. However, this is ridiculous. We lose games every year that we should win. When have we beaten anyone that we were large underdogs to? I think Marshall was the last time....Pretty sad. IMHO
  19. The biggest thing that the program needs is for University of Akron graduates to actually support their school. Donate to the Z-Fund. This offsets the University's scholarship costs and pumps more money into the Athletics Budget.
Actually some of us donate quite a bit to our Alma Mater. However, when writing that check it seems difficult at times writing the check knowing that there are people on a web site calling you out and saying you are no fan.Refusing to admit that most of what you have said for the past 3 years is true. Instead they just want to wear blinders and ignore everything.
Ah, nice excuse. Except that anyone who donates doesn't care what the opinion of someone they don't know happens to be.
That's about the response I expected. However, you are wrong. Let's see I donate to a school, however, the people fromt hat school say I am no fan and call me names.Right, I am sure noone would care.

  21. There was about half a chance in h--l that adams was going to commit to Akron.  He has stars in his eyes and he thinks he is better than he truly is.  I know for a fact that he is going try to finish hs by December so he can start college in January. The fact of the matter is, Johnny Adams WILL NOT ever play a down for MSU.  He has no people skills and has only one thing on his mind,  And that is Johnny Adams. I look for him to try to come to Akron in '09.
You guys are a joke. You hype and hype a guy and then when he doesn't commit, all of a sudden he is "not that good anyways". Good luck at MSU, Johnny. Way to take advantage of the exposure of playing in a BCS Conference.Since when are people skills required to play football??
Actually Mrs. Adams. It's not that he isn't any good. it's that he isn't as good as he thinks he is. Actually he is a good football player.
