  1. Thanks Timmyboy,It sounds like we should be keeping an eye on the RB from Firestone as well. I forget his name, but Flossie said he believed he was just as talented as Antonio Pittman was. He is 5'11", 190 and ran for well over 100 yards last week.
Firestone is my Alma Mater. I can't remember any big time football players coming from FHS. Swimmers, yes. But very few football players.
  2. Marketing 101. Basic supply and demand. If you have 100 people wanting Browns, Indians, Cavs, and OSU information, and you have 5 people wanting UA information, guess where most of your efforts will go?With the lack of support that this program has, I am surprised that the BJ gives us as much attention as they do.As Mr. Spock says, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.Whether you want to believe it or not, UA is not really cared about in the community. It is up to the team to change that.Like I said before, look at this board. It is game week and very few is here.Go to one of those other teams internet sites. They get more action in 1 single day than this board gets in a month. Please don't tell me that people don't know this board exists. We all found it, didn't we?If people are interested, they will find it.Blaming the BJ is simply blaming a sympton. The problem is that this team has never done anything to get the community excited. I hate the BJ as much as anyone else. However, when UA won the MACC and was in the Bowl game, the BJ did cover it fairly well.Look at the Indians. The old stadium got 10,000 people to games. Then came the new stadium and winning and there were sellouts. Well, the stadium is no longer new, but the team is looking pretty good right now. No, they aren't selling out, but they are still getting good crowds. Those of us on here are not the problem. There is no reason for us to disagree. We are all on the same team. The people I hold responsible for this are the students. We have over 20,000 students, yet ost of them have never even attended a game. They should be ashamed of themselves. Goint to a college football game is part of the ultimate college experience.I am sure the new stadium will help. However, that's just another excuse. If students wanted to attend the games, they would find a way.

  3. Ok, there's the answer I was waiting for.  ZipGrad is correct.  This is a product that nobody wants to see.  It's Army and Akron, two teams towards the low end of the D-1A level.  The "curious NE Ohio football fan" who some of you were counting on to come out to this game is NOT interested.  Folks, look at MAC attendance over the years.  Has anyone seen any dramatic changes?  Does anyone in our league fill up their 35,000 seats on a regular basis?People want to see WINNERS.  And I'm not talking about teams with a chance to win the MAC. Very few people I know, even the biggest of football fans, pay any attention to what's going on in the MAC.  It's the teams with a chance to win the National Championship that garner the attention.  Like many of you, I am also scared that when the novelty of our new football stadium wears off, the crowd levels will dip once again.  Heck, I'm sure other MAC teams have built new football stadiums in the last few decades, but are any of them doing much more than meeting the bare minimum for attendance like us?I've been around Akron football since the early 80's when I was a student.  I've seen just about everything you can imagine to draw more people to Akron football games.  And I now believe that the only thing that will bring real change is if we somehow get to a level like Marshall did, and can show the area football fans that we can compete on a NATIONAL level.Until this happens, we'll continue to be a "oh, Akron had a game last night?" community.
You are absolutely correct. Most people know that sports entertainment has different values for different people. You are either a diehard, like a Browns fan, or major college fan, or you are just a generic fan that will watch whomever is playing just to see some football. We have very few diehards. Therefore, we have a lot of people that may just want to see some football. If they want to see it live, they can go to a high school game and see some great games in NE Ohio. They are usually closer and always cheaper. Plus they see neighbors and friends at the games. I believe these people connect watching UA football to watching high school football. IMHOI remember back in the 70's and 80's my parents would take us to the Acme-Zip game. The RB was usually sold out. What happened to that? It was an awesome experience.I would look forward ot that game every year. I remember there was a slight chill in the air, and I was excited to go.Gee, if it's not Acme, why can't we find another local company to align with that will somehow fill our stadium? What happened to all of those people.? We were DII and DIAA at the time too.
  4. Hey BuckZip: I agree that what I said was excuses, but what are you going to say when we only get that 15-18k at the game.BTW: I wasn;t really trying to make excuses, but just trying to show people that there is (believe it or not) other things happening in Cleveland this weekend.I hope we get 30k to the game! I would gladly take the lambasting from everyone if that did happen.Like you, I can;t wait for the season to begin. Because of my job, I'm required to watch at least 2 HS games per weekend plus any other sports activities duirng the week. So, I get more than my share of sports, yet I'm willing to follow the Zips on Saturdays (or any other day).Let's hope for the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
akronad, I wasn't trying to insult your post. I agree with what you said. Unfortunately that is the way things are.
  5. You are right, we would lose the coach. That's ok though. Once you start winning, along with having the better facilities and new stadium we would be able to get a better group of candidates applying. Eventually we could pay the coach enough to stay. At least unless it is is one of the real high profile jobs.

  6. Like skip-zip, I was a pessimist in regards to this game.  It looks like maybe 15k-18k.  My reasons are many, and I'll try to keep them brief.1. Read either today's BJ or PD and you'll see that we are living in the midst of a poverty area.2. People have less $'s for entertainment than they have in the past.  Look at last night's Indians game.  You have a team that is 1st place at the end of August and you can't even fill the place.3. Air Show4. Indians game.5. Taste of ClevelandI could probably mention 5 more events, but why?I said it when this was announced and I'll say it again, "This s--ks!!!" :mad_flame:
Those are all legit excuses. And that is what they are is excuses. We all want this program to become big time. However, until we get people in the community excited and going to games it will never happen. There is so little support for this team that it depresses me. :( Look at this board if you want to see how little support there is. This is the only UA board. However, there are only a handful of us that post regularly. The rest just stop by once in a while. It's f'ing game week, and this place is a ghost town. :mad_flame: Sure the Tribe didn't sell out, but they still got a pretty decent crowd. There is now ay I would expect UA to sell out Brown stadium, but there is no excuse not to have at least 25,000. It is the first game of the season. People are hungry for football. I was watching high school games on TV with teams I don't even know just to try to satisfy my football fix.The new stadium will help. However, the novelty will wear off after a few years. If the team doesn't start to win we will be right back to where we are now. When I say win, I don't mean 7-5 or even 8-4. I mean 10-2 or 9-3 on a down year.Yeah, that is expecting a lot. However, that is what winning programs do. We consider 7-5 a good year. At big time schools, coaches get fired for that.
  7. I disagree with Conference USA being better than the MAC...East Carolina, Tulsa and Houston are "normally" bottom 100 teams.  Central Florida I think is on the rise with their new stadium and lying George O'Leary as a coach but Central and Marshall in my opinion didn't dominate the MAC when they were here.  Southern Miss is the only one I can see being a consistent top finisher.  Even Memphis has fallen way off since the bowl game.
I disagree on Marshall not dominating the MAC. Most recently, Marshall was in the MAC from 1997 (When they came up from 1-AA) until 2003. During that 7 year span, they went 48-8 (.857) in the MAC, and 73-13 overall. They also won the MACC in 97, 98, 99, 00, 02 and were runners up in 01.It would be very tough for anyone in the MAC to match that run. And those numbers only got them into CUSA...
I agree. I don't know if I would use the word "dominate", but they certainly were the class of the MAC for most of the time they were here.
  8. Fuqoua has the speed. And I don't think he played football until his junior or senior year of high school. Hopefully he is a late bloomer. Brandon Anderson not starting was my biggest surprise. Although I always thought Chevin was pretty good against the run game and weaker in coverage. Given Army will run all day, maybe it makes sense to start him.
Didn't Brandon Anderson play CB? It is surprising they switched him to safety. He looked good at CB his freshman year.
  9. The irrationality has reached a fever pitch around here. There are "haves" and "have nots" in college football. This is nigh upon indisputable. The "haves" are always going to balk at giving away any ground on the status they've worked hard to achieve... and why not? They have the first mover advantages and they are not wrong to exploit them. Ohio State got off the ground more quickly than we did and became bigger and attained a more presitgious football pedigree over the years... deal with it. Nearly every BCS school is in that boat. Ohio State did not just open their doors and become a football power overnight, history has been kind to them, and not entirely by chance. BCS conferences have larger schools, with larger student bodies, larger endowments, larger sports programs, and consequently, more $$$. There is no reversing that trend, the only solution is to become one of the big name programs, which takes hard work, good fortune, and a lot of time. All that being said, OSU did not hose us on the payout for this game. It followed what the market dictated they pay at the time we contracted to play them, or guess what? Thomas wouldn't have scheduled the damn thing. So enough with the sour grapes about how OSU "owes" us a bigger payday, enough with the out and out lie that we don't get any exposure from playing at The Shoe (hell, with the home crowds we draw, our guys are probably thrilled to play in front of someone other than mom and dad), and enough whining about the fact that we're on an "uneven" playing field when it comes to competing with BCS schools (as if that's some sort of revelation that demands action on the part of some governing body). You'll exact a lot more change by going to the games, cheering for the Zips, and converting your friends... and I can tell you that you won't win too many converts by bitching incessantly about the Buckeyes. I'm already a Zips fan (and UA grad) and nothing irks me more than the people around here who go out of their way to bang on their high chairs in every post about how bad OSU sucks (as if they're our rivals or something). Save it for Can't.
    Outstanding post.
  10. If you get good enough to dominate the other teams in the conference consistently, those teams will be the first see you to the door. It's not our fault the MAC gets no respect, but it IS our fault if we can't stand out above the them.
Sorry, but I disagree. I think it is every teams fault in the MAC that they get no respect.Akron is one of the reasons that the MAC gets no respect. Last year when UA beat NCSU, it made the sports shows. Of course then we followed that up with garbage. Imagine if we would have kept winning. If 1 team started knocking off the majors and finished in the top1 0 regularly that would bring a little respect to the entire conference.I don't feel you have to be elite top to bottom for the conference to be respected. Look at the B10. For the longest time they were knwon as the Big 2 and Little 8.The conference was respected.
