  1. ITZ stated the Zips performance on the field could be affected by the fans leaving the game. I disagree.

Any former player will tell you it matters A LOT. Look at quotes from players and coaches in college and pros that credit fans for helping them win games. There are two immediate affects it has.......

1- The home team gets inspired and pumped up to run through walls.

2- The visiting team gets rattled and it is much harder to run a no huddle offense and make a comeback if the team can't hear signals and audibles.

    Your second comment was.....

If you don't want to see fans leave early, don't get outscored 24-0, at home, in the second half!

Huh? (See #2 above)The so called Zip fans leave no matter what! If the Zips blow somebody out - they leave. If they are getting blown out - they leave. If they are making a comeback - they leave.

One thing they should have learned in the last 2 years is that the outcome is not determined until the final whistle has blown. The Marshall game last year was one of the single best games I have seen in a while. (I paid more to see it on PPV than most of the people at the game). I was embarrassed when my buddies, as well as the announcers, commented on the people leaving as the Zips were making a miraculous comeback. They made the comeback despite the lame fans because they were fighting to make a bowl game and make an impression on TV. The team made an impression and so did the fans........................NO BOWL GAME! Hmmm, why do you think that is? There is the third affect fans have.

The team that got the final bowl bid was getting blown out 21-0 in the first half and came back to win.

I will give you the benefit since there is a lot more to do in Akron than Hawaii.

As bowl season begins, Akron left out by slimmest of margins

    Associated Press

Starting Tuesday night with the New Orleans Bowl, 28 bowl games were to be played over the next three weeks, involving nearly half the teams in Division I-A.

More than enough, right? Don't try telling that to the Akron Zips.

They were the only team in Division I-A eligible and willing to play in this postseason that got left out. Finding 56 bowl eligible teams turned out to be more difficult than usual this season as the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conference all failed to produce enough teams to fill their tie-ins. (they would have gotten the bids because of fan support)

With an 11-game regular season, teams needed to be at least 6-5 _ and 6-6 wouldn't cut it for Michigan State and Northwestern, which both played a 12th regular-season game at Hawaii.

The task became even tougher when Clemson (6-5) and South Carolina (6-5) pulled out of postseason consideration after brawling during their Nov. 20 game, and left many bowl officials turning to the Mid-American Conference to find over. 500 teams - like Akron.

Heading into the last Saturday, the Zips needed Louisville to beat Tulane in the afternoon and Michigan State to win at Hawaii in final game of this year's regular season to earn a spot in the Hawaii Bowl.

Frye and seven teammates gathered at his place to watch games Dec. 4. All those big tilts with Bowl Championship Series ramifications didn't mean much to the Zips. Who cares about Southern California, Oklahoma and Auburn? What's going on with the Green Wave?

Well, Louisville pounded Tulane 55-7 to eliminate the Wave. If the Spartans came through, the Zips were beach bound.

The game kicked off at 11:30 p.m. EST.

"You could have told us it was 2:30 in the afternoon, we wouldn't have known the difference" Frye said. "It could have kicked off at 3 in the morning and everyone on this team would have watched."

Michigan State was up 21-0 early and 28-14 at halftime.

"When (the Spartans) went 21 up there we were all excited," Frye said. "We thought we were going to a bowl game."

Not so fast. Timmy Chang and Chad Owens rallied the Warriors. Chang scored the go-ahead TD in the fourth quarter and Hawaii (7-5) went on to win 41-38 and land that final bowl bid. (I was watching it, the stadium was filled)

Instead of a trip to Honolulu and a Christmas Eve game against UAB, Akron got ... zip.

"We had the plan," Frye said, "but it just didn't work out."

  2. I will offer these two thoughts:

1.) I don't believe that it affects the players on the field if fans begin filing out before game's end. 90% of the "fans" left at the half of the Marshall game last year and the team seemed to survive quite well.

2.) If you don't want to see fans leave early, don't get outscored 24-0, at home, in the second half!

This post makes no sense. Don't try to defend the lame Akron support. You actually contradict yourself. It is hard to even think where to begin responding.

  3. Sounds like the bandwagon is being put in the garage, very sad. I, for one, am optimistic about the team, the coach and the future of Zip athletics. "In the Zone" - nice work, you had some of the best observations yet............

Since I was the one that started the comment about keeping JD(aka Urban Myer), I stand by my comments and WOULD like to see the talented people we HAVE, stay in tact. ALL OF THEM!

Regarding the team and the loss......They are young and trying to make something happen, give em' a break.

Regarding the so called fans of Zips athletics, they don't exist.......The majority of them are made up of mothers/fathers of the players and some folks on this board. Thats it! Sad again.

Where are the rest of the 250,000+ in Akron. What is there that is so much fun to do in Akron? Is it because they need a winnner? If that is the case, we better build up the soccer stadium huh. I heard there was a good crowd at the last soccer game...........oh yea, it was Ohio State. Seriously, where are the hot spots in Akron, i missed them.

Blame it on the coaches, Blame it on the players, Blame it on the stadium, Blame it on the newspaper, etc. etc. etc. :puke:

  4. All I am trying to bring to light is that for Akron and the MAC as a whole to be competitive........we need stability. If you have good people, make them happy and keep them.

In the business world it cost 3 times as much to hire replacements, train them and ramp them up vs. replacing a successful tenured person.

I agree that this conversation MAY be premature but JD aint Lee Owens or Faust, Dambrot aint Hipsher or Crawford and the Mike Thomas aint (whatever his name was). How long has it taken FB and BBall to be competitive since we lost Coach Dennison and Huggins and that AD?

Regardless of the win/loss records at the end of the year, they have both shown an amazing ability to recruit. That is HALF the battle.

  5. HEY, THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING, WE WILL BE WHERE WE WERE IN 1986, AND THEN WE

HAD AN A.D. THAT TRADED JIM DENNISON AND BOB HUGGINS FOR JERRY FAUST, THE THEN PRES. MUSE ALLOWED IF NOT INSTIGATED THE WHOLE AFFAIR, SO THE SECRET IS A GREAT UNIV. PRESIDENT AND A.D., BOTH OF WHICH WE HAVE.

PERSONALLY, I HOPE J.D. RETIRES HERE DITTO K.D., BUT IF EITHER LEAVES THEY CAN BE REPLACED IF, AND ONLY IF, THE PRESIDENT AND A.D REMAIN, WE BETTER HOPE THEY BOTH DO. :D

WITH BALL AMMUNITION LOCK AND LOAD.

I reserve the right to comment on this post at a later date. There are a lot of misperceptions about Dennison and Huggins I would like to add. Keeping them was not as easy as you might think.

I cant wait to hear about this.......

  6. IMHO, it is because the Rubber Bowl sucks. I really feel if we had an on campus stadium, not only more students would come, but more from the community would come. I am a fan that goes to games, but I hate the place.

    If I wasn't a diehard football UA fan, I wouldn't go either.

AND we would have a better chance getting TV time. It sounds like too much of a chore to get proper lighting. I sure hope they build a new stadium. I live in the Washington DC area and would love to come a game but I have to say it is not worth the right now to drive to a rundown, isolated stadium.

  7. We are thinking the same things..............

1- A new stadium, along with the facilities already built, would influence JDs decision to essentially BUILD and sustain a winning program from scratch. (I always look at Boise St. and wonder how they keep their coach). It can be done.

2- The hiring of Solich INTO the MAC lends credibility and hopefully another team committed to excellence. The fact is, all the schools in the MAC need eachother to do well if we are going to start getting bids in BBall and FBall.

3- If Dambrot continues his success and stays, it will add to the overall awareness of the school........SOCCER TOO! It is nice to continuously see your school in the media and playing for championships. The whole thing could snowball into something great.

  8. Things are good, hate to bring in anything bad but...................

We have a hot young coach who has shown a great talent for recruiting, motivating and strategy. What are the chances we are able to keep him long term and what would it take? OR will he be another contribution from the "Cradle of Coaches, MAC".

I am not sure what his contract looks like but with all the momentum we have going in ALL sports it would be a major setback to lose him. Sure would be nice to have stability with JD and Dambrot, we could really have something!

Oh yea, Mike Thomas has got to be a hot candidate too.

  9. Oh the poor little Zips are going to get killed......

Oh my I hope nobody gets hurt......

    Halftime Score 28 -14 Purdue......

:rolltide: For say the Zips will get killed!!!!!! :rolltide:

Oh I think the score will be 65 - 7 Purdue!!!!!!

Come Zips fans have some faith!!!!!!

    In JD I trust!!!!!!!

If they were losing 28-14 at the half......How could it be 65-7 for a final!

  10. I have not had an opportunity to see the team first hand but reading between the lines of posts and releases on the UA website it appears as though Ferguson is scoring more and is statistically better. JD has to play the better player and there has got to be loyalty to Hixon having a QB that can get him the ball.

We can't afford to lose the momentum that has been built in the last 2 years. This is the highest point sports has been in since 85-86 when the football team went to the 1aa playoffs, soccer played for the national championship vs Duke, and BBall lost the the Fab4 in March Madness.

Many players are gamers, lets hope that is the case with Getsy. If not, the staff is going to play the player that will provide the best opportunity to win.

Let me stir the pot a little more...........I believe Carlton Jackson came to Akron to play QB. He is one of the more heralded recruits we have ever had. I heard Jacquemain looks better. How will this situation unfold?

  11. "Newbies geeked up!" That is funny. I was simply stating an opinion. Is'nt what this forum is for? And OFCOURSE we would not be having this conversation if we had made it to postseason.

I'll tell you what- I will just let the 3-4 of you "old Timers" talk amongst yourselves.
