  1. I like the "glass half full" mentality but there is no way you could say any of these candidates are better qualified than Shawn Docking. The guy recruits in the middle of the ACC from a small school and makes it to the tourney. So he can recruit. He moves to the midwest and adapts. He has a nice story to tell from many different angles.Being a UA alum does not entitle him to the job, but it would be a nice story to tell recruits about. (Playing in the national championship against Duke). We missed the recruiting boat this year anyways.Think about staffing, strategy too. Our team is loaded to make a run, should be ranked top 10/5.I would love to have these other guys playing, but coaching? Is there any insight as to whether Shawn was pursued or interviewed?

  2. Why would Akron want to hire a guy, alum or not, who has not recent ties to the midwest. Looks to me like they have gone in search of a national reputation guy, not limiting themselves to someone who was at the U back 20+ years ago. I say get the best coach and by the looks of the field Docking was not even close.
Not sure I understand your points, at all. Who here has the national reputation? Who has the best head coaching experience? Shaun's credentials blow them away and he is at COASTAL CAROLINA. Nothing against these other candidates....... We have blown a year of recruiting following a year where we were ranked NUMBER 1. What a trainwreck.Shaun Docking - is entering his eighth season as the head coach of Coastal Carolina University’s men’s soccer program. In his seven seasons at Coastal, Docking has led the Chanticleers to a 93-39-10 overall record, three Big South Conference Tournament Championships and four NCAA Tournaments. In addition to his professional and collegiate coaching experience, Docking is also very active in the Olympic Development Program.Mike Avery - Mike Avery begins his sixth season as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. In three campaigns as men's coach at Cal State San Bernardino, Avery led the Coyote program through a successful rebuilding campaign. Avery's '99 squad continued the trend of improving each year under his direction by finishing with an 8-11-1 record. In six seasons as a head men's coach, Avery has compiled a 62-58-5 (.516) mark. Caleb Porter - Caleb Porter is in his sixth season as an assistant coach at Indiana. At Indiana, Porter coordinates visiting team arrangements, home game planning, strength and conditioning, team equipment, alumni and player relations, and assists with recruiting, scouting of opponents and daily team training.Brad Agoos - In the coaching ranks, Agoos was a volunteer coach in 1998 for the University of San Francisco and in 1996 for the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Agoos was also a player and coach for the Vermont Voltage (PDSL). In addition, he has expertise developing youth players, including in 1994-95 when he coached the Park Sharon Soccer Club in Charlotte, N.C.Bob Butehorn - The former head coach at St. Bonaventure, Butehorn coached the Bonnies from 1995-99, completely rebuilding the program both athletically and academically. He took a program that had consistently finished last in the Atlantic-10 conference to both a regional and national ranking.
  3. Thanks Quickzip, that was my point exactly. Not once in the article does he mention WINNING the bowl game. That is the player's dream come true. I want a staff and players with one thing on their mind "WINNING THE MCB". It does not appear as though his head is 100% in to this game, that is not good. I would have atleast like to have seen "I am excited about going back to my alma mater, but we have unfinished business to take care of in Detroit, winning the MCB. These guys have given me their all and we are about to do something that has never been done before in the school's history".

In this case, he does OWE us his commitment. Whatever he does after that is his choice and we wish him well.

  4. His first day of work at his new job is Tuesday, one day after the Zips face Memphis in the Motor City Bowl. Akron finished the season with a 7-5 record, and this is the first postseason appearance in Zips' history. Realizing the significance, Prince allowed Wallerstedt to finish the season.

I love this part. Gee, thanks.

  5. Wallerstedt joins Prince's staff

BY JEFFREY MARTINThe Wichita EagleForget Christmas -- one of Matt Wallerstedt's dreams came true this week when the former Kansas State linebacker was added to Ron Prince's staff as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator.

To say Wallerstedt, the associate head coach and linebackers coach at Akron, is ecstatic doesn't do justice to what the 39-year-old native of Manhattan is feeling right now.

"I'm on Cloud 9," Wallerstedt said. "I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and give this everything I've got.... I think this is the best job in the country."

"I've tried in the past to get back to K-State, but whatever reason, it never happened," Wallerstedt said. "(Akron coach J.D.) Brookhart asked me where I would work if I could work anywhere in the country, and I never hesitated -- K-State.

"Here at Akron, we have a lot of good things going on. This is a program on the rise, but my decision was a no-brainer."

"I'm going to finish Monday's game and then I'm coming home," he said.

Prince still has coaching positions to fill, including offensive and defensive coordinators.

Are you kidding me! Why would players listen to a guy that wants to finish the game and go home. Hit the road, NOW! I don't want this in the lockeroom!

Here is the link Wallerstedt Going Home!! Yipee

  6. I do think that as a public institution, the University should have a policy to publish a small written report detailing why the person was hired and everyone on the interview board should participate with an opinion. The report should also explain why those who did not get the job were turned down, if the other candidates were willing to have their names released to the public (could be some confidentiality problems). I also think a record should be kept of the candidates' questions and answers and the University should release the transcripts of the interview of the successful candidate. As tax payers, we should be provided with this information.

And what do you expect to get from this other than a well crafted, politically correct report?

The report should also explain why those who did not get the job were turned down

Huh? Do you really think the other candidates would like that published?

Not sure why you would make this post.......There are many factors that are obvious for Macks hire. Are you questioning Dr. Proenza? For this job, EVERYONE interviewed is qualified.

Hiring and interviewing is an art not a science.

Cmon Man, be happy. We have a great new A.D. and Associate A.D.

  7. I was impressed with his press conference (webcast finally worked). He spoke without notes, delivered a solid message, addressed everyone by name, and seems to have a lot of passion. His experience at UTEP should be a great benefit to us and I would imagine that had a lot to do with his hiring. If he can replicate what was done at UTEP, cheers. For what it is worth, we now have Mack Rhoades and UAM..........pretty strong guys!

  8. We have beaten this in to the ground, but I have 1 more question for Zipper and Zipalong since you seem somewhat defensive of Coach Lolla.

What is your take on Coach Lolla accepting a 5 year contract, and backing out 1 month later.

"I would like to thank the University for the opportunity over the last 13 years to do a job I love with a program I am proud to be a part of," Lolla said. "I appreciate the commitment to me, my staff and the program in extending my contract for the next five years. I look forward to continuing the success of the program beyond where we are now."

The simple answer is family, goals, bla bla bla. But, why accept it?

  9. There are NO negative comments about Ken Lolla as a person. We gave him our support and I wish he and his family well. He made a decision he feels is best. I don't believe anyone questions his integrity, leadership or ability. It is futile for us to compare our own situations or speculate on his decisions. It's done.

NOW now he is a competitor. Thats all.

Akron played 4 MAC teams in soccer during the regular season, the rest was filled with ranked teams(SMU, Maryland, Penn St, St Johns, Indiana),historically good teams(Princeton, Evansville) and big schools(Kentucky, Ohio St, Michigan, etc).

The MAC affiliation means nothing, unlike football and bball. This program is solid enough and if we post the same results next year - the appropriate seeding will follow. Keep in mind we were unranked before the season started. We won't be next year.

  10. A-zip, unless you are also QuickZip as an alias and are double posting

I do not have a "Dissociative Identity Disorder" I don't claim to be right. I give my opinions and don't feel compelled to support them under an alias....that would be redundant.

Nice lack of gratitude to a guy that took our alma mater to a number one ranking, the NCAA's, and several MAC championships.

I thanked Ken with my support over the years. I also praised UofA for giving him an extension and in a post I made months ago. My quote is below....

Now that is what I am talking about! Keeping great coaches around! Low and behold, a top recruit follows! GREAT MOVE!  Coach Lolla Extension

    New Recruit

I just think people calling him out here are ridiculous and make Akron look ridiculous. Every good soccer coach who would be looking at this job as a step up are probably reading these boards, and those who personally attack Coach Lolla, a fine individual, for making what is surely a decision based on ALL the facts (not just those a bunch of fans can dream up) make all of us look pretty unappealing and idiotic.

But hey, keep it up. Maybe we can get a DIII assistant to apply for the job.

I hope prospective coaches look at the posts and say "this is a passionate fan base and institution that is hungry for a champion"

I have one overlying message in most posts I have made. WE NEED TO KEEP GOOD PEOPLE AROUND. I said it about Brookhart, Dambrot, Lolla and Thomas. If it is money, PAY EM', build smaller stadiums with room for expansion, when they are consistently filled, expand them. If a 40,000 seat stadium costs $60 mill and a 30,000 seat stadium costs $45 mill, take the $15 mill saved and lock up these great coaches. It appears as though that is what the school tried to do with Coach Lolla.

Call me foolish, but I sincerely believe Akron can consistently compete in post season in all sports.
