  1. ITZ- Are you kidding me? Owens did a lot for Akron! He won 40 frickin' games in 9 years....4.44 games per year.....Sure we "only" went 5-3 in the MAC and 7-6 overall......but it sure beats going 4-8 every year.....Where is GP1 when you need him?
  2. I continue to be confused on why the Zips insist on scheduling OSU at all. I understand that it is a paday, but aren't there a dozen other BCS teams available to play and get paid. Every year we should play two BCS teams and two other Div 1A teams---no more 1AA teams.Other than money, what are the actual advantages of playing OSU? Does it really help the program and recruiting? As for playing them in Browns' stadium, again I ask, how is this beneficial to Akron? As it stand now, it seems that about half of OSU's starters are from Akron and NE Ohio. Wouldn't this just be another showcase to get even more players to Columbus? Have we ever even had one high school player from NE Ohio stay home to play for the Zips and pass up a scholarship to OSU? Would playing them in Cleveland change this? Or are we banking on getting the good players that end up at Toledo and BG? In addition, how would the 72K tickets be allotted? For argument sake, even if we got half the tickets and our alumni purchased all 36K, how many of our alumni would show up in OSU gear? I fear more that the posters on this board may want to think.I say look into playing teams in Conference USA and the Big East, not the Big Ten.
  3. When did Biggs change his number to 32?
  4. What time are the serious tailgaters showing up tomorrow morning?
  5. That game was brutal....
  6. Thanks for the article, CK. It was an otherwise Zip(s) afternoon at the stadium on Sunday. Had a chance to see my first game in the "new'" Browns' stadium and it didn't disappoint with Frye getting his first action on one side and Jason playing on the other. It didn't hurt that I ran into KD in the parking lot and we had a chance to briefly talk about the hoops team. Should hear the outcome of the Conyours (sp?) hold-up this week. And what do you know, 4 rows in front of me sat Jason's mom. Stopped by to say hello and to thank her for Jason's support of the University. Among other things, she mentioned that Jason has a younger brother (soph in h.s.) that hopes to consider attending UA as well.
  7. After witnessing my 5th roadie of the season, I'm here to say "Bring on Zips basketball". To describe the game in a word.....Embarrassing. Sorry folks, BSU sucks so I'm not real sure where that leaves the Zips. Only the Zips could lose a game to a team where man for man they had one better player....the punter. This guy dictated the game for 60 minutes as he left us in bad field position all day. We had 4 good drives in the game...all other times the offense could not even gain two or three first downs to move field position the other way. When they are booming it for 50 plus and we are lucky to get 35 on a punt, it made for a long day. I posted after the PU game how superb Getsy looked and I was reamed because we lost by 25. Well, Luke went from as CK put it a "capable replacement" to a QB that we are stuck with for another year. Combine this with an offensive staff that needs 52 minutes to make the necessary adjustments, (no huddle) and you have a 4-5 team. Getsy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in the first half. When my 7 year old comments three passes into the game 'What kind of throw was that", I knew it was going to be a long day. Sure he did throw a nice bomb to Hixson before the half, but he followed it up on a third and goal pass with his low flying fling into the official. Kasparek didn't have a defender within 10 yards of him in the front of the endzone. The second half was better, but that isn't saying much. Yes he made several nice throws on the TD drives, but he missed at least 4 guys on up and out routes that would have gone for big yards. Add in the other drives where we couldn't even muster a first down, this continued to give us bad field position. QB/Coaching/Offense: With a BSU team that consistently had 8 guys in the box to stop Biggs, why it took 52 minutes to adust to the no-huddle in puzzling. Once in the no-huddle, Getsy had all day to throw and did OK dinky and dunking down the field, then mixing in the long pass. I understand that with bad field position, you cannot be throwing the ball all over the field. But Getsy is far more accurate when we throws on first down and we run on second, than waiting for 3rd and 11 before he gets to throw. Final two drives: Again, Getsy looked ok and the no-huddle was working to perfection. The pass to Hixson down to the goal line was nice and I thought the spot was correct. Inside the One. But why we didn't stay in the no-huddle and sneak it in is puzzling as well. To all of a sudden huddle up when BSU had no idea how to stop us and were totally confused on defense is brutal coaching. Follow this up with a great defensive stop of Biggs and now you are looking at 2nd and 5. Gee, I wonder who was getting the ball versus that now somewhat organized 11 man front? Three horrible passes later in the endzone, when he had all day and then some to throw it, sealed our fate. Question? Was Getsy trying to throw the ball away on second and third down? Both passes were near the cross bar of the field goal posts. Receivers were open in the back of the endzone. Not sure if he was trying to hit the them or did his passes jut sail on him. And I thought throwing high in the middle of the field is a no-no. Then, the fourth down pass was thrown late and picked. I believe it was Hixson who was wide open. Furthermore, I noticed that in all three pass plays, the receivers were bunched up in the middle of the field. At no time did a receiver float to either side of the endzone as Getsy had more than enough time for this to develop. Defense: I thought the defense played very well. Not dominant, but solid. If you give up ten points, you should win a MAC game. The first FG of BSU is on the offense and special teams. Boy the games the Zips would have won over the last decade with this defense. Bend quite a bit, but didn't break much. Special Teams: Heads need to roll here. We were brutal and their special teams dictated the game. Not only in the punting game, but most kickoffs went inside the 5. We were lucky to get it to the 30. Final Thoughts: Going in I predicted 5 or 6 wins, lets see how we finish. The league was down all year and we wasted an overall good defensive performance in conference play and a warrior in Biggs. No, we still have trouble with the high octance offenses, but I thought we made huge strides. I cannot say I'm looking forward to '06 with Getsy at QB, and then we have to start over again in '07 at the QB position. Here's hoping that the D continues to improve into a dominant force for '06, because I do not see it happening on offense.
  8. While I am not completely excited.....a win next Saturday will definitely get me there. (Only you could find a way to belittle Frye......in a game he didn't play in....the only thing that came to an end when Frye graduated was his eligibility, not the world....) Anyway, Saturday's performance was fantastic..... Getsy was superb. Other than a couple of overthrows, including a wide open throw to Arthur that was a sure 6, and a few ill advised throws on 4th down, you could not ask for more. His footwork was excellent, he threw nice tight spirals, thought he displayed nice touch on many passes and he looked off of his receivers all day. The first half TD drive he directed was beautiful. Nice throws all over the field......and Montgomery was great himself. Thought the play calling was great, the OL looked steady and Biggs ran hard. Looked like they were keying on him... Not sure why he was not in very much in the third quarter. If this game is any indication of things to come, we are in good shape.
  9. Just to satisfy Zips Win! I will say this, Frye obviously played very good last year. Saying that though his play was not the key to turning around the season. GP1- Now Frye played "very good".....Please, no comments to satisfy me. It's a ton more fun when you beliitle Charlie. Then I get to respond. I thought this was an open forum to exchange ideas...... and to disagree. Look, I have never disagreed that getting Biggs into the line-up turned the season around. He was outstanding. And I believe he became a better pass-catcher than runner which in turn helped out Charlie. But when you have a solid QB, of course a running game will help out immensely. Let's see how Biggs responds with Luke under center. Watch the tape guys, they gave the game to us, talk about bungling opportunities - it's why no bowls called and Marshall was chosen as the better team) Z-Pounch-Again, not disagreeing here. You make it sound like the victory dosen't count. I have witnessed more than a dozen games in which we gave the game away, yet those teams did not stand-up and give us back the victory. Going bowling has as much to do with team support as it does with winning/losing. If more of the 80 plus thousand alumni in northeast Ohio supported the team and we had some that would travel, maybe we would have received a bid. Finally, I spoke with an assistant coach yesterday, Luke has won the job.....there is no controversy here.
  10. Agree on Purdue.....yet in years past Tiller has had problems with MAC schools. I think he lost once, and was scared a couple times..... Maybe we can surprise.
  11. I just got back from visiting the new field/stadium on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. What an awesome site! The architects of this stadium did a brilliant job. Now, I know it helps to be endowed out the ying-yang, but worth stopping into see. (Euclid Ave. and E115th Street.) Boy am I jealous and now ready for some football. Anyway, they built a new turf field (surrounded by a track) in the middle of new residence halls and a parking deck. These multi-million dollar 6-floor red brick residence halls extend from a portion of the north endzone along the entire west sideline curling around the entire south endzone. The east sideline has as its barrier a brand new parking deck. A portion of the north end zone in open. The stands, looking to seat approx. 4,000 fans, run the lengh of the parking deck, about 1/3 of the way up. What a neat idea- a way to get the student body involved, many can look out their window to watch on one side, and you can park you car and walk 30 feet to your seat on the other.----And when you walk "inside", you get the feeling you are in a huge stadium-surrounded by the buildings. It's been 21 years for me--we need something like this on a much larger scale.
  12. I'm glad to see GP1 is back posting positive comments about Frye and the Zips. Gee, now he mentions not winning a big game, yet again, and blames him--not the team--for losing to Can't State, EMU, OU and CFU. Over the years, I've had the unfortunate experience of getting to hear this crap over and over. In no particular order.......he was made fun of when he made a harmless announcement he was coning back for a 5th year, was emphatically told that since Frye was an Owens guy, he would become a cancer in locker room and sabatoge Brookhart and the team and should be kicked-off the team, was told he would be selling copiers this coming year, has belittled every accomplishment and record Frye set in his four years, gets blamed for the teams' sub .500 record, discounted the greatest win in Zip history with a superman-like performance over Marshall, yet says Marshall wasn't that good so it doesn't count--his Redhawks couldn't beat 'em--and probably a dozen more comments I've conveniently forgotten. Yet he fashions himself as a Zip fan...I would hate to see what he has to say about those not good enough to be the highest drafted Zip in school history. And BTW, if Zip fans can't be grossly partial and "homers" on their own message board, then where can they be? I can hardly wait for next year... if the team goes 7-4, it will be because Frye is gone and if they go 4-7, well, Charlie will be blamed for that, too. Again, we all realize that you have nothing positive (unless it's condesending)to say about his college career and we all know that you do not project him to be a good NFL player....no offense on the latter........many of scouts have said the same. But it becomes clearer and clearer with every post that not only are you not projecting him as a good NFL player, you are openly hoping that he fails miserably. We finally have someone who will represent himself and his school very well-and it's on the local level--and you hope he becomes a copier saleman. Thanks for nothing......... .
  13. Does anyone know how to get the Zips vs. Marshall ESPN2 broadcast? I would really like to have a copy of one. I have been trying to contact ESPN, but with no luck. If anyone has had any luck getting a copy, could you please let me know. Thanks You're in luck.....I have the game on VHS and I have two VCR's for dubbing.....sorry it's not on DVD...... Contact me outside the board and we can arrange to get this done.
  14. Great question zipsfaninca.......and a very tough question..... Not sure where zips37 was during the Huggins era, but here we go. I became a Zip in the fall of '84, so while J. Jakubick may be the schools' greatest player, he simply doesn't qualify for my list. Picking 10 is difficult.....my list actually consists of a top one and nine others. The single greatest player since Joe J. is none other than #21 out of Lynchburg, Virginia- Maaaaaarrrrrrrccccccccceeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Boyce. How zips37overlooked this guy is unbelievable! While he only played 2 years, there may never have been two greater years. Led the team in scoring and rebounding both years and ended #6 on the career blocked shots list. Never had a bad game--some were just better than others. BTW-favorite Zip of all-time. 2. Eric McLaughlin 3. Shawn Roberts 4.Jimmal Ball 5.Ryan Andrick 6. Darryl Peterson 7. Roshon Brown 8. Jami Bosley 9. George Phillips 10. Bryan Roth Again, very difficult to do and my last 8 are interchangeable. While Boyce was out of this world for 2 years...Ball and Phillips playing four years carried a lot of weight. Roshon Brown's two years may have been better than any two of Jimmal's, but that is up for debate. Darryl Peterson's first two years were as good as any pure frosh and soph's.....junior year was somewhat dissapointing..looking forward to player of the year type play this year. The disappointing ends' to the seasons under Bosley and Phillips clearly impact them at the bottom of the list.... The play of Bryan Roth was so long ago my memory has faded, but he still makes the list .........Talent wise, Anthony Buford is a top three, but he left after his junior year so screw him....he is out. The players under Coleman Crawford--Freeman and Coleman simply do not make the list. Finally, Travis and Wood may join the list, just not at this time. Go Zips!
  15. Again, he may be average, but to say that after the OU game is ridiculous. He was running for his life the whole game and with the game on the line and the Zips holding a small lead, Frye led the offense on one of the best drives of his career. Under unbelievable duress, he completed 3 third and long situations, capping it off with an unbelievable pass and catch in the endzone. Somehow, this will be belittled, too.
  16. I don't like the Can't game being played at the end of the year, either. But if ESPN says we will give you a game if we dictate the schedule, I guess you have to take it. Look, the week before Thanksgivng will be billed (by ESPN) as MAC rivalry week. Miami plays Ohio on Monday, Toledo plays BG on Tueday and Akron plays Can't on Wednesday. Again, I prefer this game to be played on September 3rd, but this is how it is. Not sure there are 7 wins on this schedule......yes, it could be tougher, we could have Western and not Central..... nontheless I see CMU and Buffalo as wins, 6 pick'em games, with BG, MU and PU as longshots, at best.
  17. Any way you look at it, it's going to be a disappointing day on draft day as the crack wagon a.k.a. the Cowboys, will pass over Frye. And they think so called stiffs such as Bledsoe or Henson are going to lead them to the proimised land! Looks like another decade of crappy football.
  18. CK: Excellent stuff. Furthermore, what is it with KD refusing to foul when you have one to give. At the end of the first half vs. Toledo he had a foul to give and they drained a three. He also had one on Thursday in the first half vs. WMU. While it didn't hurt us as they did not score, to me this is a no-brainer: FOUL.
  19. GP I realize Pluto ticks everyone off when he credits Owens for the football programs success. Actually, I give Owens more credit for the basketball teams success than anything else. If Owens didn't do the University a huge favor in taking the Ashland job, I'm not sure there was another fund raising position available for Hipsher to take and therefore he may still be coaching and we may be looking at a 5-8 conference record, not 8-5.
  20. Zips are up to 69th in the Sagarin Ratings. Not sure the last time we cracked the top 70! I have three words for Miami fans........Beat the Redskins.
  21. Beat a "name" opponent...PLEASE....win a tournament game...PLEASE... I find it interesting in the different opinions that are posted relating to scheduling. While I would like to play and beat a "name" opponent as well, I'm not sure how this is possible if we cannot beat Drake or UD. "Name" teams would kill us! I understand we need to play these teams to make money ......I guess based on our history, I would rather play a Div 1 team that we have a chance to win at versus a team that we have no shot with. At the end of the year, the reality is that a non-conference win, even versus a top ten team, would be meaningless on the national scene. (very meaningful to us, I realize) The tournament committee would rather take 43 Big Ten schools than 3 MAC schools that are deserving. So again I ask, what is the big deal? Play schools that are beatable....and then win the MAC tourney. Furthermore, after more than a decade in the league, we continue to spin our wheels and the comparisons to Miami are devastating. But I will add my take--I despise those SOB's and I'm tired of reading about them.......let's see, they have the most boring brand of hoops in Div. 1 and yet they find a way to get good players......and they will probably beat us 44-42, if they are fortunate enough to score that many.
  22. Spoken like a true Redhawk fan.
  23. Of course everyone's BP is down now that the Hipsher's have left town.....so to speak. But 5 games in and I see more of the same..... I hope things change fast. Score 88 under KD or 68 under DH and we lose.......this year at Drake. Not sure I heard any defense played. The offensive rebounding still sucks. We cannot hit a free-throw. Wood and Travis still have no shot from 7-10 feet. Four years later and the alarm clock still has not gone off for Meyers...and he starts. There is hope, however, as he only plays 2 minutes per game. We continue to start each road game down big.......hmmmm, who's the coach? And we are under .500 in conference play. Glad it's still December. We have a long-way to go.
  24. Knee Injury? Really! I travel by air maybe 2 times a year and as I was boarding a plane from Atlanta to Akron on Friday evening, none other than B. Hip boards after me....... I just cannot get away from this guy!!! And he seemed to be walking fine so not sure the extent of this so called knee injury!
  25. You're a walking contradiction......You must be the Miami fan that has been posting messages.
