  1. If you create a user Gallery here (look for the tab upper right), you can upload as many photos as you wish. The limit is a database size restriction thing. No limits apply in the Gallery. Let me know if you have any problems. FYI, the batch upload for Gallery takes about 2M at a time without choking. Go Zips! ZW That info should be pinned in the tech support forum. It's good advice. I agree. July 8th, 2008

  3. +10 That might be the best suggestion posted here @ ZN.O in a LONG time. Thanks for stopping by! Go Zips!
  4. Great to hear. Hope those summer workouts are keeping him challenged! Go Zips!
  5. Hey Spin, First off, glad to have you here .. I lurk one of the other regional sports sites you're around. Great to have another sports fan here. How does the Champions League title work? Don't they play more than one match in the final? I seem to remember reading something a couple of years ago where the final game was a tie, but the title was awarded to one of the teams based on "goal aggregate." Does that mean they played a series of 2 games?
  6. The legend grows. But you're way low. I was actually born in 1545, bitten by a vampire as a young man, and continue to live on after 565 years with the minor inconvenience of having to raid a blood bank every now and then. Two times last week, I made a sarcastic comment about age that ended up being spot on. The first was when I ran into an acquantaince of mine that I hadn't seen in some time. His kids were in elementary school I guess the last time we hung out. So I make a crack about his kids being in college, not grasping the duration of our lack of contact, and he looked at me and said: "sort of, my son's in Law School and my daughter will graduate next year." I was stunned. Then a day later, I make a joke figuring that only Z-P and not the D.I.G. would remember NBA pre shot-clock .. and here the guy remembers it. Done with calling people old for a week I guess .. except Hilltopper .. who was around when dirt was clear. Go Zips!
  7. Now see, you've changed forums. The issue @ UA is how to get rowdies to perform inside the JAR with the same vigor and numbers as they do at Lee Jackson. Now, THAT would be a home court advantage for the Zips! Go Zips!
  8. Basketball Guy™ here & I would point to that exact item as a hurdle for me becoming more of a futbol fan. I'm certainly not a hater ... we've had pretty much every game projected on the wall here at the office (ESPN3, the Tres, can't get enough of it). But the shootout concept in an elimination game eludes me. It seems to cause teams to bunker and not try to win, for fear of making a mistake. I don't want futbol changed to be more complicated or high scoring .. I just don't get the PK finish. Seems to me that every time I follow a tournament or follow futbol multiple times in a short period (World Cup, NCAA tourney) .. the games are good, close matches that end up in ties decided by PK's .. it's deflating. I have no illusions that I have a solution .. it's just my hurdle. Not a roadblock .. just a hurdle. I think the WC is fascinating theatre. It'd be good to get some Luis ads on during the final on ABC when it goes down, similar to the Superbowl Ads ... during HT. Make it futbol centric and brag about the new facility and the team on a impressive run. That would help capitalize. Would have been better had Bradley's side made an extended run .. but whatever. Go Zips!
  9. Close to 40?! Really? What does that make the Statistical D.I.G.? Close to 80? Go Zips!
  10. I think the equipment in use is partly to blame. The helmet "protects" players pretty well, so in turn, they feel invincible. It leads to more injuries long term, even if they're not apparent directly when they occur. Hitting with the head, near the head & neck .. whether intentional or not, is serious bananas and should be dealt with seriously. There ought to be a rule, from the NFL on down to Pop Warner or PeeWee that if you lead with the head, if you hit someone with your helmet, or if you hit them in the helmet .. it's an immediate ejection. First offense is ejection just for the current game. Second offense generates an additional one game suspension, and third offense you sit for the rest of the season. I think it may need to be phased in, but it HAS to start at the lower levels. Anyone who ever played football is ingrained at a young age certain rules about offsides, motion .. etc. This needs to be one of them. Only by making it really serious at all levels will this be addressed adequately. This won't solve hitting your head on the ground or another player as you're tackled, but it may help the problem. The head is not, and should not be, a weapon. The faster that gets solved the better the players will be, and additionally in my opinion, the better the game will be. I write this as my son is at (flag) football camp this week. But I can promise you that I'd rather him play rugby than football. The equipment makes the players feel empowered to play with reckless abandon. Go Zips!
  11. In my opinion, Terry Pluto's best 2 efforts as a writer were "Loose Balls" and "Tall Tales" .. about the formative years of the ABA & NBA respectively. His style of introducing a topic and just letting the interviewees tell the tale worked well. In Tall Tales, there's a chapter devoted to Biasone and the 24 second clock, as well as its impact on the game. I don't recall there being many principals in the NBA that didn't agree that it helped the league tremendously. Only after that invention were some teams forced to move from bowling alleys to arenas due to uptick in interest and attendance.
  12. Hey Dave, Since you were around back then, can you tell us what it was like before Biasone & Hobson invented the shot clock? Did you like the game as much then as you do now, or did it grow on you after that change? I'll hang up and listen to your answer. Go Zips!
  13. First off, it is nice to get a new hotel near downtown, and Courtyard's are generally reliable accommodations. I have to wonder however if this is really the best place for a hotel downtown. Zach brings up a valid point in my opinion. It ought to be walkable from places like the Info & Canal Park. This location is a bit of a stretch in my mind. I don't think it necessarily means it' s a bad idea .. mostly I'm just frightened that the same thing occurred to me as that occurred to the kid.
  14. Wasn't that Roger Bacon that beat them?
  15. One of the major reasons the stadium was built was because the NEEDED one. The last one was falling down...literally falling down. I don't think we are going to have anything to say about realignment and may be forced out of our current position along with other MAClike schools. I dont' think the BCS schools want anything to do with schools like UofA and as soon as they can separate themselves, they will. We really need to plan for when that happens. Agreed that the stadium was NEEDED. No question whatsoever. However, the scope and facility that was CHOSEN to fill the NEED represents a much deeper commitment to FBS football. No doubt we needed a FB stadium. The manner in which UA addressed the need reflects UA's desire to compete in major college football, not FCS. My hope is that the Zips fall somewhere in between. There are MAC schools funding Football improvements (both operationally and facility wise), and there are some that are focused on the status quo. I think those lines will reveal themselves before any real options become available. Then my hope is that some of the eastern C-USA come looking to create a new middle level FBS league needing 4 new teams. UA & UT could do ok in a league with Marshall, UAB, MTSU, WKU, ECU ... etc. No idea whether or not Temple or U@B would follow. I am still bummed there's not utter chaos right now. Would have been fascinating summer theater. Go Zips!
  16. Other than Temple, there is not a single team in the MAC a BCS level conference would want. In all the talk about realignment, there has not been a single peep about a MAC school going anywhere. The Big East may not want to take Temple back in a couple of years, but they may have to take them back out of necessity. Everyone, please listen to me and listen good. The MAC is a I-AA league. Any move the league makes should be with both eyes on I-AA and forgetting the fantasy that somehow we are going to "grow" into something different. The MAC is being crushed under the weight of the BCS conferences and we need to move and move quickly so we can do it on our terms and not in a panic. The league has one year to figure out what to do and they had better think fast. We could still be D-I in every other sport, we just need to free ourselves from the clutches of the BCS. Much of what you say about the MAC may have its merits, but we didn't build a $61M stadium to be FCS. Not happening @ UA.
  17. An acquaintance of mine runs services in Hiram for adults with developmental disabilities, I think mainly Autism. They're petitioning the Pepsi giveaway for some money to improve their facilities. It's a worthy cause. Vote if you can. Thanks! The organizer's text follows: I am writing to ask for your assistance for the rest of the month to help out a great cause. I am not asking for money, but just about two minutes a day for the remainder of the month of June to help my brother's cause for helping autistic men and women. For the past 20 years, give or take, has taught and cared for behaviorally handicapped children. From Camp Cheerful to Parmadale to Cleveland and Ravenna Public Schools, he has worked and cared for some of the most difficult children you can imagine. During all this time, he has also taken on the additional chore of caring for four (4) behaviorally children at his home, with one being autistic. He has committed his efforts 24/7 for the betterment of these children. After leaving the Ravenna School system a couple of years ago, he and his wife made a commitment to own and operate group homes in Portage County to serve more children and young adults. This includes hiring and training employees, writing all the behavioral programs, following all the state guidelines with regards to use of medication and training and the list goes on. He now runs four group homes with thirteen clients and 50 employees. If that is not enough, he became the CEO for a new therapuetic working farm in Hiram, Ohio for the autistic. This is where my request comes in. The Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community was born about a year or so ago. It is a working farm with gardens and animals for autistic men and women to attend and do meaningful work that does wonders for their self esteem and sense of worth. On the website link below, there is a you tube video that explains more on the actual farm. The farm currently does not have an onsite office/gathering place for the clients and staff to get out of the elements as well as having an indoor restroom. Pepsi has come up with a program to donate money to worthy causes. Once a charity/group submits a request and gets accepted, they are placed on the ballot with about 50 other groups and the public votes for the causes. The top ten vote getters receive the donation. The Hiram Farm was accepted and put on the ballot for $50,000.00 donation to be used to build this office/building for the farm. They now need votes and this is where I am asking for your help. Each person is permitted to vote once per day through June 30th of this month. In the email below, you will find a link that will put you on the Pepsi website with the Hiram Farm request on it. All you need to do is log on and then vote for them. Save the page as a bookmark, and vote each day. Feel free to listen to the you tube link that will describe a little more about the actual farm, but the important thing is to vote. If each of you could take two minutes or less a day to vote, my brother, his wife and I would greatly appreciate it. The work he and his wife have done over the last twenty years is truly admirable and inspirational and I ask each of you to participate to help their cause. Thanks for listening and please vote. 18. If only it was a little closer. Bummer. Go team Buffalo Wild Wings! Go Zips!
  19. The Big Ten operated quite well for a long time with 11 teams, so I'm not so sure the Pac 10 needs to add anyone else right now. Utah would make sense, but after Texas turned them down, I'm not sure they want to go that route. Having to settle for Utah after coveting Texas would be a huge downgrade. It would be great for Utah, but what would Utah bring that would benefit the Pac 10? Not much. My guess is that at some point in the reasonably near future Pitt, Syracuse, Rutgers will end up in the Big Ten, and then the cream of what's left of the Big East will merge with the ACC to create a new mega-conference. - More presence east of the Rockies - A built in rival for Colorado - A balanced schedule, where there isn't a bye or OOC needed each week. - A 12th team, permitting the coveted Conference Championship game & resulting TV revenue from that (millions). It will be a less than ideal consolation prize, but it would be mildly surprising to see the PAC stay at 11.
  20. I'll chime in here on the outing. If you golf at all and are a Zips hoops fan, you need to go to this. It's really a good opportunity to get to know the coaches and hear how things are going in the summer. This will be my 4th or 5th Zips hoops outing, and I find it to be an invaluable aid in curing the mid-summer blues due to lack of Zips information. It was a nice outing for years at Raintree. Last year, Silver Lake was a good venue & I'm betting Portage will be even better. Good chance to play a course that otherwise many of us don't get out on. All the coaches are always there & accessible, and you'll learn some things there that you might not otherwise hear about. I've got my group .. hope you've got yours. Get your FB outing group together and join us at Portage! Go Zips!! B)
  21. I didn't change a thing since the last time I tried to access ZNO and I am no longer getting the security warning. Win XP and IE8. I'd love to say that I got right on it and found the source of the problem, but I haven't yet. Please do keep us advised if the problem resurfaces. I run Firefox on Ubuntu .. so I'm not that concerned with viruses locally, but do want to be sure your favorite site isn't attacking you. ZW
  22. The slow down, if it delays things for a couple of years, does afford UA the opportunity to address one of the glaring weaknesses in their facilities resume: hoops. Not suggesting they need to build a 12k seat arena or anything, but the JAR is a tough sell to moving upstream in conferences, no matter how small upstream the desired move may be. I wonder how long the Big East will continue to sit on it's hands in regards to FB. As it is now, they don't have enough conference games. They're the low hanging fruit whenever the SEC / ACC / Or Big TelEveN wants more team. Maybe not on life support, but by sitting and waiting for everything to happen, they risk their entire existence (as a FB conference). I think some of it is borne out of the stability that the non-FBS members (ND included) must feel they have. They don't really need to have a FBS side of the equation to continue having a great hoops league. So they're not really motivated to add teams to keep the FBS side of things in good shape. Losing the FBS schools wouldn't be optimal .. but Marquette and Georgetown are still getting at large bids in a 10 team Big East that would survive their departure. Go Zips!
  23. This is all tremendously disappointing to me as I eagerly root for re-alignment chaos.
