Highly Regarded Recruits Visit Akron
xu9697 replied to rln's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Get all the higher end mac recruits. Win some damn games. See where the program is after that.Probably still in the mac but with some options.Great post.Nicely was offered by about 9-10 MAC teams. Though early in his career, he seems to be working out OK.Good to get those guys that are basically recruited by every MAC team, steal a couple that have some Big 10, Big East offers...and coach 'em up!! -
Highly Regarded Recruits Visit Akron

Really? How do you figure? We have about 9-10 locked up. I can't say I have seen a recruiting class of smaller than 15 at a FBS school..if I have, it is very rare. I would think we have room for at least 5-9 players. -
Not so fast my friend...http://akron.scout.com/a.z?s=333&p=8&a...amp;nid=4266308#165 DE in the country...2 stars. Nothing to brag about, but nice size and like someone said earlier= if he is playing basketball (and his biography on the page says, "standout basketball performer") he is probably a darn good athlete.Apparently when you get stars you get an inch taller and lose 10 pounds.Nice! Rivals and Scout OFTEN have differences there..who the hell knows why.

D'Orazio may be a "smallish" QB, however, he is one LARGE DB.Agreed. And this really should be where he plays.Would love to add Jerry Lovelocke to the Zips!http://sports.espn.go.com/highschool/rise/...tory?id=4402479

http://www.jjhuddle.com/news/articles/2010...ed-and-stacked-Very surprised to see no Seth Cunnigham on the roster (regardless of whether he stays with UA committment or not). A little surprised about D'Orazio as well.Pretty much completely confirms that Potts is coming as a DB=good move. Certainly means we need to land another QB in recruiting as well. Nicely, recovering Rodgers and smallish D'Orazio...bit thin there. Would like to see one more sizeable, drop back type (based on what it looks like we will be running on O).

Starting quarterback Zach Maynard has decided to leave the Buffalo football program.Although this helps the Zips on the field, this is a shame for the MAC. Keeping good QBs is the key to teams getting good and the conference having any chance of being successful. Plus, in both fball and bball, there is somewhat of a budding rivalry starting with 'The Team Up North" (I know those that hate OSU will hate that I did that..eh, whatev.)

If only we could switch Syracuse and Gardner Webb, I would like it more. We need that easy game to get things together under the new coach before facing a real challenge.I actually would love this schedule. I definitely see your point about GW. No doubt it is very valid. However, I think you need a bit of splash to start the season and the Ianallo era. Not to mention, with OSU playing on Thursday, getting butts in the seats for Syracuse is crucial. One might say that either way we would have butts in the seats for Syracuse b/c they are BCS..but that just isn't true (based on Indiana last year and SU's recent struggles). Also, from a city/NE economy perspective..might get a few more folks travelling from Syracuse to Akron/Cleveland on Labor Day weekend. Finally, if we can get this win, we get a week to heal and get "rested" (subs by late 3rd at latest) against a weaker opponent before 2 straight BCS opponents. 3 straight weeks against SU, UK and IU would be beating our players up pretty good.In addition, one small item= SU will have a QB starting with even less experience than Nicely in Nassib. Might be better to get after a guy like this in week 1 vs. week 2.

When does Gardner-Webb release their schedule?

the push in campus bookstores is to push universities and professors into a collusion so that students are forced to pay $175 for a book that would otherwise cost $39.95 under other circumstances.Relatively speaking, there's no money in sports merchandise.Really? I assume, by "relatively speaking" you mean at a place like Akron/MAC school? I find it hard to believe (without concrete proof) that OSU, Michigan, Clemson, Tennessee, etc. don't gain a HELL of a lot of $$$ from merchandise sales. -
Good points about Torrence= perhaps LB, perhaps it was just the injuries. But just by saying those things..the mystery grows.Troy Gilmer is another interesting player. Seems that he would be a perfect fit for a FB, but perhaps the opportunity will open up for him to get a look at being a power back.

Awesome idea!!! MAC really could use this to help their profile. Even leaving OSU out, UC, Dayton and XU are consistenly solid to good teams. Not to mention, we can keep the $$$ in NE Ohio with this deal!!! -
There is a bit of talk in another topic, but it really needs it own discussion thread. After the spring game and, later in the summer we will certainly know more. But based on last year and based on the TYPE of football we probably will be playing:Broderick Alexander:IMHO, he showed signs he could be a big-time back..and the type of offense we look to be installing (Wisconsin/ND type), I would definitely see him as our "John Clay". Considering he should be around 6-1/6-2 and 225 to 230 by the beginning of the year. Might be more of a first and 2nd down back, leaving room for...Dale Martin/DeVoe TorrenceMartin= seems to be the perfect change of pace/3rd down back type. To be a good 3rd down back, you need to be smart..know when to block, when to release and be ABLE to block. His durability issues make me question the possiblity of him being an every down back.Torrence= might be the best of the 3 in terms of size and speed. Didn't seem great at finding the holes (if they even existed). He still is the biggest mystery to me. Could be one of those guys that never gets it, could be a star, could be moved to WR...Don't see anyone else on the roster that I am familiar enough with to say that they are really in the conversation to get in the 3-deep. Could still be a recruit on the radar, but right now it looks like it will come down to these 3 young men. Opinions, thoughts, retorts, etc?

How about an Akron themed sports bar that will show all road games and serve as the official game day meeting point for the zip's away games. I know that would require taking a look at the old discussions of having a bar on campus. However, they serve alcohol in the suites already so they could probably knock that out pretty easy. It could be a great place used over the entire year. You could stop in before any campus event and not have to hassel with parking twice. It could employ mostly university students. I would go there often to support the students.Great idea!! They should put it in the "Team Shop" since:A. We are supposedly having issues with B&NB. Doesn't seem to be much of a push to sell Akron gear -
If that is the case, then some serious work needs to be done NOW! Having that sit empty for another year is ridiculous. I think B&N runs Ohio State's and Cleveland State's Team Shops (obviously OSU does not lack for suppliers of apparel). I don't think it has much about "who" as it is about what the university is doing in relation to the apparel providers...most specifically Adidas (football and other sports) and Nike. Speaking of that, I don't know for sure..but we have to be in a VERY small # of FBS schools that have different providers for football and basketball. Not sure how helpful that is, though I do know that many schools have many different providers for apparel for the FANS.

so the mac champ would be a lower seed than Miami? I would eather face Miami than akron in the first round. Nice try though.Nice try though? What don't you get? It is based on RPI. I don't care what is based on, that really wasn't the point. -

What I would love, besides the ideal home and home match-ups throughout the state, is a...Best In Ohio Tournament:Play it in say, early December on a weekendTeams that go are based on the past year's final rankings (use some formula..RPI or what not):If we did that based on last year's final RPI: http://www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2009/rpi1 Xavier vs. 8 Akron2 Dayton vs. 7 Wright State3 OSU vs. 6 Cincinnati4 CSU vs. 5 MiamiRotate it btwn Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus.NOTE: Not sure if that is the official RPI..just one example -

Same school (Milford Academy) as Chris Henderson. Anyone know what is up with him? http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recr...enderson-103327Is he really still a commit? Did he speak with Holmes? Also, a few other nice players at Milford..any of those guys coming along for the ride? Is this our new pipeline? Could I be asking any more questions? -

State of Ohio colleges/teams do a TERRIBLE job of playing each other..unless, of course, they have to (based on being in the same division). OSU avoiding UC except to play them in Indianapolis (and fill that city's coffers). I am biased, but Xavier has been the best program in many ways in the last 10 years..OSU looks away from them as well. Akron and Dayton easily should be playing ever year, besides the fact that EA is dead on. Wright State is going through a solid time of play right now..Akron and Can't should look to play them as well.Look at the state of Indiana, and especially IU. They have played AT teams like Indiana State, and this was before they tanked (which is temporary IMHO with Crean there). They played Butler at home and road even before Butler basically surpassed them (temporarily) as a program.A lot of it comes down to "2 for 1s"..but do away with that by doing the more "neutral" court= Quicken Loans, Nationwide Arena and Fifth Third Bank Arena (or whatever Cincy's is called now. So many possiblities, so many missed opportunities. Xavier has SO MANY alum in Cleveland area. Once a year they should be playing either CSU, Akron or Can't..if not at their home gym, then at Quicken Loans. Miami and OU should be visiting CSU with all the Miami/OU alums. This state has VERY good basketball...we do a piss poor job of celebrating it IN STATE!!!! -
From the article mentioned in another posthttp://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/81911877.htmlMeanwhile, team shop sales stayed about the same over the two years. In 2008, UA's athletics department netted $8,200. Last year, Barnes and Noble ran the shop and the university got a cut, so the final net profit might not be much more than that, Hammond said.$8,200!!! That is beyone pathetic!!! Besides the lack of jerseys for just about any sport, there just is a poor variety of sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. Pathetic. If no one has already, I will step up and Ask the AD= when in the world are they opening the Team Shop in the Info? I would hope that it will open at the beginning of next year's football season. Sigh. I am all ready to clad the whole family in Zips gear...just give me some good choices and variety!!!
