  1. That's absolutely something I want to do. Sometimes it can be a little tought working with professional teams as a collegiate journalist, though. For the person you're talking about, we'll hopefully have something in a paper around Sept. 24 or the last issue of the year. The Browns play Baltimore Sept. 24 and Dec. 17. I really want to track down Chase Blackburn this semester and a couple soccer players.Probably try to catch up with Daryl Peterson at some point.James Black might be a little tough to find, but if anyone knows how to get in touch with him, let me know for sure. Thanks for the suggestion!
  2. This is something we'll look into. I'll have to look at the cheerleader's profiles and see if anyone is unique. Or try and figure out a story idea involving the whole team. Thanks for the suggestion!
  3. No, this isn't another petition to join the Buchtelite yahoo pick'em league (though there are spots available! Join now!).Instead, here's the deal: I'm looking for your input. As you may or may not know, I'm the sports editor at the old Buchtelite. While I like to think I know how to come up with story ideas (and we've got some fun ones already planned), I love hearing what readers (potential or current) have to say. So let's have it. Let me know what kind of stories you want to see about the Zips and I'll see if my wonderful sports staff can cover it. I'm not looking for only football stories, but anything Zips-related. Interested in a player? Let me know. See a trend we should look into? Let me know. See something you think sucks? Especially let me know. The bottom line is that I want the sports section to be filled with stories you want to readNow, all of that said, please realize we are always limited in space and might not be able to cover everything (re: some away games). And remember that we're all student journalists and this is a learning experience first and foremost. Are we going to make mistakes? Sadly yes. Am I going to trying to keep those to a very minimum? Hell yes.So, let me have it. Please keep the suggestion of "anything better than the Urinal!" to a minimum. Drop a line here, or you can get in touch with me. Here are my particulars:-e-mail: dkadar@buchtelite.com-phone: 330-972-8449-AIM: dankadarLet me know what you want and we'll try to provide it. You may be saying, "Kadar, this is kind of silly, asking a message board." To that, I say you all are the best Zips fans around and I treasure your knowledge, criticism and ideas.Thanks!p.s. let me know what you think of our newest stuff on www.buchtelite.com. Oh, and I think I'm contractually obligated to tell you to read Rasor's blog, or something.
  4. Dearest Zipsnation members,I like to think I know a little bit about college football. I also like to think that some of you are wise to the sport. Here is the challenge: Join my Yahoo college football pick'em group and battle me, Rasor and other Buchtelite sports folks. Maybe (maybe!) whoever wins, I'll figure out some kind of prize. Maybe Rasor will give you an autograph or something. Here are the particulars:League ID: 14831Password: beatkent (that's b-e-a-t-k-e-n-t)Join quick because the league size is limited to 50 people and games start next week. Please only one team per person.
  5. That's exactly the reason I think the Zips have a chance of winning this game. I've said it since the end of last year, the Zips can beat Penn State. They don't have much of a pass rush up front and their DBs are beatable. Kennedy and Kasparek might not have good games, but Arthur and the other wide receivers should.
  6. That's a quote from the espn.com story.
  7. What no love for the video game story I did with Kiki Gonzalez and Tim Crouch? My heart, it's broken.
  8. Make sure to check out Rasor's blog some time later today. We went out to practice earlier and I saw him scribbling down some thoughts.
  9. That kind of stinks. A position that looked to have been one of the team's deepest now looks pretty shaky.
  10. He'll probably play 12-15 plays. We'll see how demolished he gets with this guy they got off the street to play center.By the way, I'm sure everyone knows that that weiner of a center Bob Hallen is retiring tomorrow and that he's from Can't State. I guess I shouldn't really be surprised too much that he's gutless. Stupid Flushes.
  11. That's odd because he was on there last week.
  12. I was out at training camp yesterday morning to catch a minute with Charlie for a story. He looked pretty good and much bigger than he was during his Akron days. Of course everyone was a little bummed out about Bentley, though.
  13. This is from Phil Steele's magazine, so take that for whatever it's worth.Yards Allowed PG: 319.6 (1st in the MAC)Yards Gained PG: 367.3 (7th in the MAC)Passing Yards Allowed PG: 192.1 (3rd in the MAC)Points Allowed PG: 21.8 (3rd in the MAC)
  14. I wouldn't call it a lateral move, but it's not a straight-up move, either. I mean, it was only a matter of time before someone like Pry moved on, but I'm a little surprised it was Illinois. No, I'm not surprised because Illinois right now is pretty awful. I'm kind of surprised because Pry seems like a coach that's heavily into recruiting, but Illinois' coach Ron Zook already does plenty well with that. In fact, that seems to be the only thing he's good at. But it's kind of silly to think about the whys of the situation. I think you have to wonder about the what nows. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but Pry was heavily involved with the Zips tight ends. You can argue that the Zips' best depth (in regard to quality of player) is at tight end. I wonder if any of those guys might follow him over there? I think Illinois only has four scholarship tight ends and didn't sign any last season. Is it totally out of the realm of possibility that Jose Cruz or Merce Poindexter could transfer there? I mean, they certainly seem to have the talent to play for Illinois. But, maybe because I've been up all night, I'm being paranoid.Rasor updated his blog about what UA administration needs to do. As he likes to say: "read the blog for more."
  15. I'm not sure what exactly to think about the Lindy's stuff. They even talk nicely about the teams that are awful. And then they get some facts wrong. They talk about Al Blades playing at Miami from 1996-2000 but then in the next 'graph say he died in 1993. Weird. Or that a receiver, whose name I can't remember, had 42 catches for 193 yards last season.I'll have to swing by the bookstore to check out the Sporting News book. I picked up their Big 10 (ugh) book. I was kind of hoping they'd combine the Big 10 and the MAC, but nope. Instead, we get Notre Dame coverage.
  16. Bummer, he's a heck of a coach. Really nice guy, too.
  17. Ha! That made me choke on my drink of water.
  18. Here is the story. Taylor said he is OK. Cut in the arm after a reported road rage incident. He's fine enough to play in a charity golf even today. No word on whether or not Ray Lewis, OJ Simpson, Lawrence Phillips or Paul Pierce were around.
  19. Zipsrifle, Greg Jennings of Western got picked fairly early. Any other year, he probably would have gone a round or two later. But with this year being an awful year for receivers, he kind of lucked out. Then, Western's TE Tony Scheffler went at the end of the second. I think Hixon was the next MAC player selected after them. The NIU lineman you might be thinking of is Doug Free. Unfortunately, he's came back for NIU this season. To me, he's probably the best player in the MAC and easily one of the top 10 offensive tackles in the nation.I agree with you in the thought that Zip could be drafted every year. Next year it'll probably be Getsy and maybe Kiki or Crouch. Then in a couple years maybe Kennedy, Kasparek, Nate Robinson and Kevin Grant.
  20. Here is a story about Hixon getting picked. It's nothing really new to any of us.
  21. http://www.theonion.com/content/node/46395
  22. Temple coach John Chaney is set to announce his resignation on the eve of tomorrow's game against Akron.EDIT: Here is an ABC news story about it.EDIT 2: Here is the short AP story. Also, it's Chaney, not Cheney. I am in fact an idiot.
  23. Akron is on March 10.
  24. More precisely, I wrote a story about it. Unless the person at Summa didn't get back to us, the Buchtelite should have had a news reporter at Montana's pre-speech press conference. Look for it in Tuesday's paper.
