  1. Interesting take on the develop of soccer in America. Toting the Old Ball 'N' Chain: Player Development in America

I was also surprised to see who the author of this piece was too. I actually met John in Nashville back in March and got into an in depth conversation exactly about the things mentioned and a few of the Zips players who were mentioned in this article.

I understand why some want to mimic the European system, but collegiate sports is too big in the US. How many college players make it to the MLS every year? around 40 to 50? A very tiny percentage. How many academy players make it to the MLS? A very tiny percentage.

The NASL and USL-Pro do not pay enough, a college degree is so important for U20 American soccer players.

If the youth system is going to improve, it's going to require college and PDL/NSPL to get better. A talented U20 player has college for Fall and Spring, and the PDL/NPSL for summer. If they want to play year round, they could always play indoor soccer during the winter.

2nd league in UK - Championship players earn an average salary of £195,750 ($303,412),

3rd league in UK - League One players £67,850 ($105,167)

    4th league in UK - League Two £49,600 ($76,880).

    2nd league in US - NASL $16,000 to $25,000

3rd league in US - USL Pro $10,000 to $20,000

  2. Even the Zips are getting publicity out of Ken+s big run. Example Here. :D

    Ha, too funny.

Can't State is considered an Akron metro school so it's nice to see Akron bars support a local team.

It's been at least 15 years since I've been to an Akron baseball game and this Can't run has created a desire to go to next years Can't v Akron game

  3. The call wasn't ridiculous at all lol. He clearly swung. Shame on them for getting a call right

And I've actually heard a lot about Cribbs forking over money so that more Can't State fans could make the trip.

Soccer is definitely growing in the country, but still isn't close to baseball. It is what it is, not saying the differences in coverage are right, but is to be expected.

As the Hispanic population continues to grow, so will soccer.

College baseball is very popular in the south but forgotten here in the north. I'm not sure what Can't's revenue split will be for the CWS, but they don't make anything for the years they don't make it. In fact, they make less than both women's basketball and soccer.

I don't understand why we're even comparing soccer to baseball here. The local coverage for the National Championship in 2010 was all over local news. A few of the stations did specials for it. They brought camera crews to the barley house. I understand their target market is geared towards the older crowd and appreciate the coverage we received.

There are a few older posters on this board that come over to the soccer board every now and then to express their grumbles towards the sport, it happens a lot with the older crowd. The Rubber City Brigade group has had soccer watch parties at local bars and we've seen old men complain about soccer being on, "this sport isn't American." We pack bars for soccer watch parties and I think that angers the soccer haters the most, that times have changed. I bet these local news stations receive tons of soccer bashing emails when they cover it.

I for one hope Can't's success can help boost the popularity of college baseball in this area so Akron can charge for games and have an additional revenue source.

Can we all at least agree that Can't's success is creating more discussion about Akron's baseball team? This could be the longest baseball related thread on Zipsnation. Let's not spoil it with soccer vs baseball.

  4. Well, I am certainly out of the running.

I had the Netherlands (and their horrible defending) winning it all.

Earning no points whatsoever is much worse than merely unlucky.

Look for complete overhaul of Dutch roster by World Cup.

Most people went with the Orange. I have Italy so it's not looking good for me either

  5. There is media attention and then there is media attention. Another harsh reality is very few people watch the local news so the attention is almost meaningless.

Can't was on a nice run, but they were completely out classed yesterday. The run is coming to a close in the near future and the players will fade into the background of college athletics where college baseball is mostly played. I'd take a national championship in any sport compared to that outcome.

Those that watch local news are of the older demographic whom are the same people that don't like soccer and think baseball is still America's pastime

  6. But, let me start at the top. Michael Jordon left basketball to play baseball. If your formula is true, it's because he was a better baseball player?

If you reread my post, it might help you. Jordan played basketball because he would have had to get a normal job had he persuid baseball. Sometimes you're built for a certain sport no matter your athletic ability.

  7. We're spoiled with pro teams in the north. Here's 2012 attendance figures much higher than soccer overall. I'm not denying baseballs popularity over soccer at the college level but the popularity dwindles as you go north.

Back to the subject, I'm rooting for Can't because anytime a local team does well, it reminds the local OSU frontrunners that local schools are worth rooting for too.

Also, how often do we talk about college baseball on here? Can't's trip to the CWS could help overall interest in college baseball in this area.

  8. I highly doubt Can't's media exposure from this is getting the attention it deserves from the high school crowd. They don't get their news from local sources, they get it from the Huffington Post or some other online news site. Even if Can't was to win the CWS, I doubt they could get an attendance above 1,000 next year.

  9. American kids who tend to not do well at other sports gravitate to soccer so the gene pool isn't as great so the talent is equally bad for all teams.

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. I'm coaching youth sports and can tell you your 100% wrong. I've seen so many good youth baseball players quit for spring soccer. Ive seen extremely talented high school football players quit for soccer. Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant wouldn't have a chance at the MLS. Your best baseball and football players would probably struggle with soccer as well. You're so out of touch with reality.

The best athletes play the sport they're best at, not what they prefer. Which is why Lebron plays basketball instead of football, why Chad Johnson plays football instead of soccer, why Michael Jordan played basketball instead of baseball.

  10. Anthony Grant could cause the Zips a lot of problems.

"Grant, a forward, comes to BGSU after spending a year at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. Last season, he set school records with 23 goals and 53 points as McKendree broke the program record for wins. The Bearcats went 17-1-0 on the season. Grant’s total of 23 goals included a whopping nine game-winning goals. He had three hat tricks and five other games with two goals, and scored at least one point in 15 of the team’s 18 matches. Grant scored a team-high 17 goals in his final at his high school, Jamaica College."

  11. Glad to see you on the massive soccer attendance bandwagon so early this year. And doing so on the Football Thread. Since that would probably more than double what we drew when we played WVU at home during a national championship run, in an NCAA playoff game, I'd say you're probably pretty close on that estimated attendance

roll your eyes buddy, but it's extremely likely with a football game being played earlier in the day. Some fans will make it an all day event. Let's hope Terry Bowden can get people to attend football games this year. hope to see you at the game. I'll be at both. The rowdies will be busy on Nov 3, Akron football plays at Can't State 2pm, and then Akron soccer plays home against Western Michigan 7pm.

  12. Oct 20th will be a busy day as both the football and soccer teams have home games. Akron soccer plays West Virginia later in the day which should be a 5,000 plus attended game. We tailgate in lot 9 as well so stick around for more tailgating after the football game. I'll be bringing trinidad scorpion peppers and lots of good beer.
