Men's Soccer Adds Six More For 2012 Season

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron head men's soccer coach Caleb Porter announced the addition of six more players for the 2012 season Wednesday, including SMU midfield transfer Robbie Dershang.

Dershang, a 2010 Top Drawer Soccer (TDS) Freshman All-American and two-year starter, was a key contributor on a Mustangs' team that posted an overall record of 29-9-3 over two seasons while advancing to the NCAA Tournament each year, including a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2010.

Prior to his time at SMU, Dershang was an NSCAA High School All-American at Cherry Creek HS and the 35th-ranked recruit in the nation, according to TDS. He was also the 5A Colorado Player of the Year as a senior after scoring 21 goals and adding eight assists and earned first team, all-state honors twice.

With a host of international experience, Dershang was named to the U.S. National team Pool at the Under-14, Under-15 and Under-17 levels and participated in the U.S. Under-17 residency program in 2008. Dershang will have two years of eligibility remaining at UA.

Joining Dershang at UA next fall will be incoming freshmen midfielder Osas Malkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic HS), defender Phil Fives (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny HS), midfielder Chase Jabbori (Novi, Mich./Novi HS), midfielder Alex Ranalli (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty HS), and defender Brad Ruhaak (Akron, Ohio/Copley HS).

These six new Zips will join UA's initial six-player signing class announced last February that was ranked No. 1 in the country.

Despite losing seven starters from its 2010 NCAA National Championship squad to the Major LeagueSoccer SuperDraft,Akron made another deep run in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year before falling to eventual NCAA runner-up Charlotte. UA will return eight of 11 starters next fall.

  2. I believe WakeMed Soccer Park (Cary, NC) only holds 7,000

    Park Features

    * Lighted stadium field, two lighted practice fields & five additional fields

    * Permanent stadium seating for 7,000 with expansion capability

    * Concessions, locker rooms, rest rooms and meeting space

    * Outstanding cross country course with 5K, 6K and 8K marked courses (adaptable to other distances)

    * 2,600 parking spaces

Perhaps it was 10,000 with standing room

Not sure what First Energy stadium seats, but I'd guess around 2,500. With standing room, we packed 5,200 in there but I don't think the NCAA would be interested in that.

  3. I agree 100%. ODU and JMU have comprehensive athletics programs and solid academics. They would be natural in-state rivals and add VA to the MAC footprint.

I'd also like to see UMass and Temple dropped entirely if they refuse to be full members of the MAC. The commissioner needs to let it be known that the MAC is not to be used as an intermediary or stepping stone to another conference.

ODU and JMU both have very good soccer and basketball programs.

I agree with dropping UMass as a MAC affiliate but that's sorta hypocritical of me because I like having WVU as a MAC affiliate as well.

  4. Can those of you who are Major MLS fans give us a review of this season's national television coverage? I have been able to watch only one game this season (Philly Union v DC United on the NBCS Net) and was forced to overcome the play-by-play accent of another limey in American soccer. I have nothing specific against the English or British islanders, I just wish US television execs didn't have the belief that so many British accents made the game more "authentic". So, don't ask me about the PA announcer in Seattle! Is it true that MLS is no longer broadcast on FSN? If so, that's a real tragedy.

Fox broadcasted an EPL game on the main national channel during the MLS Cup. It's odd because it's extremely rare for them to broadcast a soccer game on their national channel. I assume the reason Fox did this is because they weren't happy the MLS Cup was being broadcasted on ESPN.

The MLS made the right move with NBC. Fox treated the MLS like a 2nd rate league, NBC treats the MLS with a lot more respect and do a better job covering the games than anyone else.

It seems each team have their own announcers and I think only 3 or 4 teams have an announcer with a UK accent. I have Matchday Live and I love it. It's only $50 and well worth it. There's a thread on Zipsnation with a coupon code in it. I also posted a few things in this thread about the MLS's progress this year
