  1. Akron coach Caleb Porter developed a friendship with Fleming years ago on the recruiting trail and considers the Xavier coach one of his best friends. Porter didn’t think twice when Fleming pitched the fundraising idea with the exhibition.

“I know when Devin was born and they found out she had Down syndrome it was a tough time for him, a difficult time, and I was there for him,” Porter said. “It was a no-brainer when he asked if we would come down this spring and do this fundraiser because of how connected I am to him.”

Porter’s involvement went beyond an invitation acceptance. He purchased 100 tickets to make a $500 donation.

I wish I could make it to this game

  2. You can also check out the Akron Beacon Journal, but the paper does devote much of its coverage to Akron’s terrific men’s soccer team.

Is this suppose to be a bad thing?

He forgot to mention a couple Zips still playing in the NFL: Reggie Corner and Charlie Frye.

I don't believe the last few games the Zips played should affect anyone's judgement towards this year. The team quit on Ianello.

  3. My only issue with this schedule is that we're not playing anywhere in Florida in late October/early November. I enjoyed going to FAU last year. I guess I'll have to wait until next year.

A road trip to South Bend in early September could be fun with a jaunt into Chicago on the Saturday between matches.

Also, I can't believe that the MAC got it right...WVU at Akron on a Saturday. If Zips Football draws a good crowd, that could be a "crazy" day on campus.

hope we don't have any conflicts with tailgating for that game.

  4. Where did you get the 120 minute IPA? I've been wanting to try it but have never seen it anywhere.

Just picked up some Oberon. Probably my favorite Bell's of what I have tried from them. Tough to beat for a flavorful summer beer.

A client from Florida helped me get my hands on one

  5. While Billy Curry has certainly gotten off to a slow start in building Georgia State's football program from scratch, Georgia State has an obvious advantage over the other schools you mention for Sunbelt consideration. They are located in Atlanta, which is obviously a huge TV market. So is Ga Tech, but Tech (20,000 students) is much more of an elite/academic school than GSU (30,000 students). It's a little like the MAC picking up Buffalo even though the Bulls were a mediocre 1-AA/FCS team.

If the MAC were to make a run at any of Appy St, JMU or ODU, I prefer the Monarchs for the same reason. The Tidewater area of Va is a bigger market. Besides, it would make for a better road trip, too :)

ODU and JMU both have decent soccer programs. Would love to see that happen.

  6. The MAC had an even record against the Big Ten last year and 2 teams that made the NCAA tournament.

    For 2012:

The Northern Illinois Huskies are a lot better and a top 25 team.

The Akron Zips are a lot better and the #1 team.

West Virginia is a new addition and a top 20 team.

Could the MAC send 3 to the tournament in 2012?

I believe the MAC is one of the top 5 conferences in college soccer.
