Of course not...heck, it's not my picture anyways I think it'd be cool for Zips fans to see...does anyone see Dru in the crowd? I'd be surprised if he wasn't around somewhere.

http://www.the700level.com/2007/05/temple_sports_p.htmlThe NCAA has placed entire Temple athletic program on probation after the University discovered and self-reported that its tennis coach was allowing an ineligible player to take the court. The coach, who was fired on April 12, 2005, hid the scheme by mumbling the name of the student-athlete during pre-match introductions and by asking opponents to skip formal introductions altogether, the NCAA said. The school and Hoehne were cited for violations including fraud and erroneous student-athlete eligibility certifications. The men's tennis team received a one-year ban from the postseason and must forfeit all matches in which an ineligible student-athlete played during the 2004-05 academic year, the NCAA's Division I committee on infractions said. The Owls were 3-9 that season. With how ridiculous the MAC has been in recent years, they should fit right in!

He played hoops too...saw him during the state final. Biiiiig kid.

I'd personally love to see one of the blue sections given to students...however, I see four things standing in the way of that. 1. Money - no way UA takes away the mass amounts of money they receive from the alumni to sit in those seats. Maybe if they had the students pay for the season seats...which leads to #2. 2. Not enough students come to the games - Maybe it was because of the much-debated t-shirt rule...maybe it was because Mack Rhoades sold out his students for the Nevada game...maybe it was a variety of things. But for whatever reason, students didn't show up last year. The sections were full/near full for two games - Can't and Senior Night. And we're going to ask them for more seating? 3. This idea has already been proposed to the Athletic Department. And they swiftly denied consideration of the plan. We do have new leadership in the Athletic Department, but that leads to #4.4. Mack Rhoades won't respond to your e-mail suggestion. I've written him, others have written him...never even got back a "Hey, thanks for your thoughts and suggestions"...nothing. Personally, I'd be shocked to see him even look into an idea like this.

So has Charlie's track record had anything to do with...well...ummm...Charlie?

And why were they desperate?

And there's a reason the Browns management looked at Trent Green, Matt Schaub, etc, and then traded a 1st Rounder to draft Quinn...
-
Quinn's competition last year was Army, Navy and the Air Force.Frye was playing the Steelers, Ravens and Bengals. They even showed a few Browns games on TV last year.Good comparison. I'm pretty sure he meant their respective opponents in college...I think anyways.
-
I see what you're saying, but at least to me, neither does Brady Quinn. What is it that so many people see in him that make them believe he can single-handedly ressurrect the Browns organisation? (note: this is not directed at you, sgm. I've seen too many idiots say that the only thing the Browns need is a good QB, never mind the O-line, running game, defense, special teams, ect... e.g. Trivassano)I just haven't seen anything during his college career that sets him apart from any other QB in the draft, apart from Weiss talking him up because he's pratically obligated to wax poetic about someone with whom his name is strongly associated. What makes you think Quinn was worth giving up TWO first round picks for? There were plenty of above-average QBs still available in the second round. Maybe Quinn really is better than Frye. Maybe not. The sad thing is we will probably never know. All I know is the Browns are willing to screw up their own future for a possibly marginal improvement in the present. - How do you figure they gave up two first rounders? - Quinn DOES have elite physical tools. He has the size, is very strong, has a strong arm and can throw down field with no problems. He also has some great intangibles to go with this - good mechanically, experience against good teams, ran a pro-style offense, very tough and durable (never missed a game I believe). - We WILL find out who's better. Charlie has had time already and will most likely start the year....and eventually Quinn will get a chance. So we'll find out.
-
I agree that it's probably unfair to compare Frye to Russell. I just used him as an example to prove my point though. Most QB's struggle early on - but some you have more confidence in because of elite physical tools that you can't teach. Guys like Russell, Manning, etc have theset ools...Frye, IMO, does not. As for the line, I think it will be greatly improved. With Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach, the left side should be stellar...and there is still the real possibility of Lecharles Bentley being back. It might turn out that the Brownies have - *gasp* - a good offensive line!
-
Quinn will struggle at first too, so I'm not sure they would've been too much better. But Quinn in two years far surpasses Frye in two years...just my opinion...and that's why the drafted him this year.

Oh my god...I'm not well-liked on an Internet forum? Goodness...what will I ever do with myself!??!?!? And bashing GP for being "negative towards the Browns in the past"? Ummm...if you haven't noticed, there haven't been too many positives in the past buddy! If anything, I think someone who can set aside their personal allegiances to players and teams and look at a debate without bias has more credibility than anyone else. I honestly missed your facts that you presented Big Zip. If you link me to them or re-post them here I'd be glad to respond. I realize Charlie hasn't had much around him to work with. I realize that statistics aren't everything when judging a player. And I know that quarterbacks usually aren't good right away, and that it takes them time to develop. But I just don't see it in Charlie.Let me use Jamarcus Russell as an example. He has a cannon for an arm, has good accuracy on his throws (including deep balls), has great size for a QB, has good pocket presence and is mobile enough to tuck it and run...he is very talented. And he will most likely struggle at first...but with Russell, you know that he already has the elite physical gifts (ala Manning and some of the other QB's you mentioned) that will give him every opportunity to succeed in the NFL. Frye doesn't have anything close to Russell's arm and doesn't match his raw physical gifts. Therefore, you can't be as confident in the chances of Frye becoming an elite player. How many Browns have stepped up to say they feel Charlie is the guy and want him to be the main man? How confident must the Browns front office - who scouted, drafted, and watched Charlie develop - be about Frye if they tried trading for Trent Green, Matt Schaub, and eventually for the rights to Brady Quinn? And why haven't I seen much defense or support of Charlie outside of this forum? All I can think about is this though...I'm I really disliked on this board!??!?!
-
He has started for 1 1/2 years. In my opinion, he hasn't really gotten all that much better during that time. Ask yourself this - if he wasn't an Akron alum, would you defend him so strongly? I'm guessing no...but who knows.
-
It would've been hard for the media to pass up the coach of the National Championship runner-up. With that said, I agree with you on not being all that impressed by Matta. Great recruiter, not so great coach...and I think half the time OSU won despite his efforts. And how much credence can be placed in a poll that places O'Shea over Christian? I hate Can't and I hate their program, but what he did what their team last year and in recent years with that program has been quite impressive. He's gotten the most out of teams with not as much talent. I'd say the opposite about O'Shea.
-
Good post Z-P. And I agree competition is good. Maybe I'm wrong and it will push Charlie to another level? I think when Derek Anderson came in and played well it definitely woke up him a bit and lit a fire under him. Or maybe it'll make Brady Quinn work that much harder in order to become the starter. We'll just have to wait and see.
-
The only things I hear in support of Frye are:1) He's tough and can take a beating2) Everyone else on the team sucks so you can't blame him95% of the players in the NFL are like Charlie...tough as nails. So I don't see why people attach that to his name like he's the only one doing it. And maybe the running game would open up a little better if Charlie was actually some kind of threat to throw downfield? Maybe the protection wouldn't suffer as much if Frye would stay in the pocket instead of seemingly running right into defenders? I'll post it again:Charlie's NFL QB ranks in 2006:QB Rating - 26thPassing TD's - 27thInterceptions - 27thSacks - 27thPassing Yards - 23rdCompletion % - 5thYards Per Attempt - 26thAnd as GP1 pointed out in another thread, the high completion % is from Charlie's dink and dunk passing. Charlie's had time to show us something, and he hasn't shown us much. He got outplayed by a career backup last season. I wish the guy the best of luck because he is a UA grad and gave us some great memories but as a Browns fan, I care more about putting the team out there that gives Cleveland the best chance to win. And maybe not right away, but before long Brady Quinn will be the QB that gives Cleveland the best chance to win. I never even liked the guy and I hate ND...but if he's the guy at QB (and he is) that will help turn this franchise around, I'm behind him 100%.
-
First a comment about completion percentage. This is how Frye made a name for himself at Akron and how he will stay in the league as a back-up player at least for a couple more years. Completing one pass after another to a guy five yards in front of him is his game. How many of you Browns fans know that the Frye/Winslow combination broke the Newsome record for catches in a year? It should make you Browns fans sick to know that the record of a great Hall of Famer like Newsome was broken by those two. The point is that completions to tight ends do not win NFL games and they didn't win games at Akron. They get first downs now and then while moving the ball between the 20s, but they don't win games for you. Big plays do.Yards per attempt. This statistic describes a risk taker. The greater risk taken, the greater chance of big plays. The Wall Street Journal did a study last December about this statistic (they do strange sports statistics on Fridays). In the previous four Super Bowls, the winning QB was the league leader in this category. When they published the story, Tony Romo was on a roll with Dallas and was leading the league in yards per attempt (I don't know how he ended up with a poor December though). Yards per completion was the most common statistic between the four winners. Since Frye doesn't throw the ball down field, or take a risk, he can never lead the league in this statistic and will never be a winner in the NFL. It's really no more complicated than that.As far as you Browns fans wanting to come over and root for the Steelers, I would just like to say....thanks, but no thanks. We have enough of you already. Couldn't agree more with your assessment.

By the way...Just heard from a friend of mine that LeCharles Bentley may play this season after all. Thomas / Steinbach / Bentley / Fraley / Shaffer

In the Browns defense... 2) Wright is a stud player, first round talent. I'm going to give Savage the benefit of the doubt and assume that he wouldn't have traded picks away to draft the guy if they didn't believe his "character issues" wouldn't get in the way. Character does matter. You say Wright is a "stud"...he could just as easily be the next Maurice Clarrett. Phil Savage gave up way too much on this one when he could have waited for a quality guy such as Andy.http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/wright_eric Maurice Clarett wasn't a stud talent by the time he entered the NFL Draft...two totally different situations. Wright is a heckuva player who had some legal issues two years ago, wasn't convicted, and hasn't had any problems ever since. Trust me, I doubt Phil Savage trades away multiple picks and takes the guy if they hadn't done extensive research on the guy and felt very comfortable with him. Is it really bothering people that they took Wright or is it more that they didn't take Alleman?
-
scratch that.....they just traded away their pick. sgm. who do they have to play at their other guard position? Andruzzi hasent shown much of anything the last year and a half. maybe im wrong but andy would make a better guard then andruzzi. (IMO) I'm guessing the line looks like this as of right now:Thomas / Steinbach / Fraley / McKinney / ShafferI definitely think Alleman would've helped. I'm just saying CB was a big time need as well.

In the Browns defense...1) Cornerback is just as much of an area of need. 2) Wright is a stud player, first round talent. I'm going to give Savage the benefit of the doubt and assume that he wouldn't have traded picks away to draft the guy if they didn't believe his "character issues" wouldn't get in the way. I guess we'll see... yeah true. but i think the OL is more of a need because of the fact that they drafted their "franchise" QB. If they dont beef up that OL he will end up like all the other QB's to play there......hurt and on their back alot. They did sign Eric Steinbach, the best guard available in free agency, and drafted Joe Thomas, the best tackle in the draft. I'm not saying everything is fixed, but they should have a decent line at the very least. At cornerback, they had Leigh Bodden and not much else. It was a definite need.
