Toledo Area Star Offered by the Zips
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Has our high school recruiting been comparatively slow in gaining momentum this year? And, if so, do you think it may be due to the fact that we've been so successful with transfer and JUCO players that JD may be putting more time/effort into those recruits? Maybe it's just me and maybe I'm not remember previous recruiting seasons accurately? -
Hello Zippy Childrens Book

Heeeey now, easy cowperson. I never said nor implied that in any way, shape or form. So don't accuse me of that. Thank you. Also, look above, I never said beanies were for boys.Additionally, as far as knowing our mascot, I'm fairly certain that generally a female cheerleader is inside Zippy - an easier lift for the other cheerleaders. Finally, I can't believe it was actually said that the Wikipedia information trumps UA's! Don't ever try telling a professor that one for any research writing assignment! Here you go, even more evidence. How much do we need? I'm sorry the truth seems to be so disappointing to some on the board. But don't kill the messenger! (And don't unfairly accuse the messenger of sexism either ) Go Zips! -
Any "Heat Miser" reference is golden IMO!That got me thinking in a little more abstract sense. How about.....The BG Logo of Just a Few Years AgoAnd The Partridge Family Logo?I was thinking the same! Heat Miser would have never come to mind! Priceless! Heat Miser, Jim Nabors, The Evil Krang?! And now The Partridge Family?! This thread is quite brilliant! Hilarious.

Aaaaaah! Widipedia does in deed list poor Zippy as a female! How embarrassing! Oh, well, that's a perfect example of the misinformation one can expect from Wikipedia! As well put in American Dad...Stan: "If only there was a place that you could make any outrageous claim you want with absolutely no proof, and millions of people would accept it as fact."Steve: "That's it! Wikipedia!"Or, as The Office makes perfectly clear, only Michael Scott considers Wikipedia to be a reliable source of information! Here's yet another piece from a more reliable source... The University of Akron! Zippy's no shemale!!! Back up off the poor guy, you pervs! Zippy don't swing that way! Now, the Golden flush on the other hand... -

Zippy is irrefutably a boy! Shame on you guys! No guy likes to be confused with a girl. You guys are going to make Zippy embarrassed to show his face at the Rubberbowl on Saturday! Here is even more proof of Zippy's manhood!. (Poor Zippy, I'm sure his fragile male ego has taken enough of a beating as it is!) That is, unless Zippy is a lesbian? ... -

People, people, people, Zippy is a boy! If you were a college student creating a kangaroo mascot, would it have crossed your mind that, technically, a male kangaroo shouldn't have a pouch?! No way. If you're creating a kangaroo mascot it's gonna have a pouch. In fact, it never crossed my mind, till it was pointed out about a year ago, that technically, Zippy shouldn't have a pouch. It's simply a delightful anomoly! Here's a touching documentary on The Real Zippy Enjoy! -
Now this was a great commercial. It's very well done and almost gives you goosebumps! Unfortunately, I don't believe I ever saw it anywhere other than Youtube.
-
Oh, another thing. We really could commission our marketing and graphic design students to pump the programs. I have a friend who was a graphic design student @ UA and did jaw-dropping work. The students put a lot of pride, time and effort into their projects - obviously not what we've been getting from whoever put that shameful commercial together. That "Be A Part From The Start" music is an abomination!
-
Your idea is a good idea! Unfortunately, it's strength is it's weakness; our marketing department doesn't "do" good ideas.Btw, I was watching that "Be A Part From The Start" commercial on YouTube last night and was just marveling at how spectacularly AWFUL it is. If the goal was to pull The University of Akron down to the level of Stark State, well that commercial certainly does the trick! It is criminally bush-league.

This topic was tossed around a bit in the Penn State vs. Akron 2009 thread, but there were about 3-to-4 different conversations taking place in that thread, so I thought I'd start a new one. I know a move to the Big East would be supreme and a "no brainer" - let's not start fighting over that term here But I'm not too sold on C-USA. I'd as soon stay in the MAC than make a move to C-USA. I really like the MAC and our rivalries with Ohio, Miami & Can't. I love to hate those guys and I look forward to those games every year. It pains me when we lose to them and I'm thrilled when we beat them. I honestly think I'd really miss those games if we jumped conferences. I know I'm a total Zips homeboy and so my judgement is clouded. So my question is this: would jumping to C-USA be a good move for the Zips? The added travel expense would be enormous and we wouldn't have any natural rivals, save, perhaps Marshall. Is my liking Ohio, Miami and Can't only a product of following the Zips over the past howevermany years, or are those genuinely good rivalries? I think they're quite natural. I don't know. Right now, given the choice between C-USA and the MAC, I say stay in the MAC! Thoughts?

Speaking of Jalil Carter, did anyone see the pics on GoZips.com of the game where they had this shot of him leaping to block Can't's final field goal? I think the only reason he missed blocking it was because it was so far right? Man, what an athlete. http://uaim.dyndns.info/photo_galleries/_A...e/100408640.htmLink doesn't seem to work so here is the photo I was referring to.Lord have mercy, look @ that vertical!!! He's a freak! To answer CK's question about where Jalil's been thus far this season, wasn't he battling a little injury earlier in the year? And, yeah, I love Tyler Campbell too, but Jalil is a future NFL player. What do we have, 5 years running w/ a player selected in the 1st 4 rounds? Well, this year it's going to be B-Will. Next year it's Bowser. The following year is Jalil. The year after that, DeVoe Torrence. That'll make 9 years running! Go Zips!

Yeah, Johnny Long is at Ashland? Yeah, I guess I knew that now that it's mentioned. You're right about him. He certainly passed the eyeball test, was both quick and fast and seemed to have nice hands. He's gotta be an amazing receiver @ that level.
-
I noticed him being on the roster as well. He's Brett Wackerly from North Canton Hoover. He was a very, very good high school QB, but he'll never step foot on the field @ this level. JD's probably not even using him much on the practice squad. It's nice that he walked on and made the team though; that's gotta be a lot of fun for him! If he's concerned with playing time though, he'll have to transfer to Mount, Walsh or Malone... or Can't next year!

The reason Bowser's TD review took so long
Blue & Gold replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yep it would have been out of bounds and an incomplete pass. Jacq put the ball where it needed to be so that Bowser was the only one with a chance to catch it.Yeah, good answer. I'm a bit perturbed w/ all the negativity Jac gets on this board. Jac's not a perfect QB, but he's really progressed from where he was last season (which is really all we can ask of him) and he can really move the offense. He did throw 3 picks last week, but only one was entirely his fault. Again, JC's not a perfect QB, and he's no Charlie Frye, but then again, we may never see another Charlie Frye again! Jac's obviously put in a ton of work this past off season and does a commendable job! Go Zips! -
I've sorta had that thought myself. We're going to sell out our first home game anyhow, it doesn't matter who the opponent is. It could be Indiana, it could be Indiana State. Additionally, I'm a little superstitious (yeah, I played baseball), so I'd really not only love for us to win our first game, but I'd also love for us to score first in our opening game. Christen the stadium properly; get a good karma in there. The Aeros won their first game and scored first at Canal Park. I was thrilled/relieved by that! Good karma.

This game sucks. If we go on the road to play a Big Ten team, why can't it ever be Minnesota or Northwestern? Why this Wisconsin, Ohio State & Penn State madness? Our chances of winning that game are slim at best. And we'd better not get rolled by PSU or it's really gonna put a damper on the opening day of the Info.

Yep! You Rowdies are part of the show now! Keep up the great work; you guys really add a lot to the environment!!!
-
Yep! Steve French has been a hero of mine for about 15 years! The Frenchy abides.

Haha! Congratulations Zeke! It's an honor that your fellow students think so much of you to vote you their king! Don't get a big head! Continue to be nice to everyone; all people need that! All hail the king!!!

How in the H did we win that game?

Definitely check out the Ohio.com link; EXCELLENT pictures! Here is a picture of Bowser's absolutely amazing catch! -
I was very interested in last night's game and watched it in it's entirety. Before last night's game I was still a little unsure about where our Zips' team stood: expected, but well played losses to Wisky & Ball State; expected beatdowns of lowly Syracuse & Army, followed the strong and very entertaining game against equally tough-to-peg Cincy. I'm no longer doubtful. Cincy put the hurt on Marshall last night; made them look real bad. Marshall's lone td came on a long, blown-coverage pass to start the 2nd half. Other than that single play they really couldn't muster much O against the Bearcats at all. Additionally, due to Pike's injury, UC was starting a red-shirt freshman QB getting his very first snaps on the collegiate level.Thirdly, toward the end of the game UC fumbled the ball around the 5 yard line as they were driving in for another score. Thus, the score easily could have / should have been 40 - 10. Complete domination. The Zips' D has been playing extremely well the past 2 weeks making this team for real. We beat down Ball State the next time we play them... in Detroit! Fear the Roo!

It's funny you mention grey in the uniforms. I've thought for a couple years now we should toy around w/ using grey. A few years ago I saw a grey Cleveland Cavs jersey. The grey jersey w/ blue and gold numbers and lettering was sweet.

True, true! Gold-sequined Speedos would be so hot! Steam would be rising from the pool! I know Zipmeister would be a season ticket holder!
-
Not bad! Thanks Zip81! That is a sharp helmet!

Beanie, you seem to know quite a bit about this. As far as the gold on our helmets go, is there an "industry standard" for the gold color? I.e., is our gold the same as Army's, Notre Dame's, Florida State's, etc., gold?Oh, and any word on what the new home jerseys are gonna look like?
