  1. What morning show? Are you on WZIP?
  2. Haha! This is quite the controversy. I just can't think of Zippy as a 'she'. He's not a she, he's a he! Zippy's a dude. Mascots are quite often (more often than not?) idiosyncratic. Very quick examples: Can't's bird has teeth, Brutus Buckeye has a body and the Miami Dolphins are affectionately called "The Fish" - even though dolphins are mammals! And while all mascots are at least somewhat idiosyncratic, additionally, there's not a mascot is the world that is anatomically correct!!! So just 'casue Zippy has a pouch doesn't mean he's a girl. Who ever thinks of a kangaroo sans a pouch? No one! So Zippy, being a kangaroo mascot, is naturally going to have a pouch. I could even perhaps begin to accept it if Zippy were officially androgenous. But a girl? Never!!! Btw, Zippy's outfit is quite similar to Donald Duck's - nice shirt & hat, but no pants!
  3. Thanks Zipstrumpet. I've asked this Q before but I don't think I've ever received an answer, so does anyone know whether the U is going to photo journal the process?
  4. I voted. You know, for how excellent the graphics are nowadays, they still can't get Zippy right. He's looked like that for years - barely looks like Zippy.
  5. You say "50-50"? Is Zeke deciding between Akron and Pitt? When I saw Zeke at the game a month-or-so ago, after the game I saw Chris & Brett McKnight's father talking to him. The McKnight's father looks like a really enthusiastic Akron supporter. (He actually seems like a really great guy - very supportive of both Chris and Brett.) I think the b-ball team has a real nice, friendly community feel - all the players really seem to get along well - and I hope Mr. McKnight's enthusiasm can help encourage Zeke to be a Zip!
  6. Districtballer,How would you scheme against VCU? What's Akron have to do to win next Saturday? To beat the Zips it seems as though you have to pressure our guards from the time they inbound the ball, always have a hand in their face, don't give them any open looks, and in the half-court game pressure them up high - push them about a yard out from the 3 point line. With our big stud Jeremiah out it's been a lot (a TON!) easier for teams to do that.
  7. I am not so sure we want to run with VCU, they looked awful quick and athletic. They play a tough aggressive defense. Maynor looked fantastic, hopefully Linhart can slow him down. But no matter who wins this one .......... Gosh....we played our worst game of the season. Sorry to put up that performance for you guys. Hopefully our game will be better.Ha! Join the club. Talk about playing the worst game of the season, we're currently playing as poor of ball as we've played over the last 3 seasons! We've really gotta tighten things up.
  8. No. He won't be till about September. He's scheduled to have knee surgery when this basketball season is over. It's a shame.
  9. I just got home and saw the last 7.4 seconds. It looked like Maynor (sp?) got fouled at the end there. Probably a tough foul to call. ESPN didn't have many camera angles on it and cut away as soon as the game was over to go to that stupid Dale Ernhardt movie. Man, we just need to get healthy. VCU looked very athletic - especially compared to out gimping, limping lineup. This season started w/ so much promise but we're a shell of ourselves; we're the walking wounded.
  10. There, KD just did it again. I just turned the game on it sounded like Frenchy said Linhart has all 6 of our points and KD just took him out of the game. I just don't understand that strategy.
  11. Thanks nbs95! Please keep us posted on Zeke! We're all hoping he'll be a Zip!
  12. I love the local guys too. How's about that RB from Firestone? I went to the Garfield - 'Stone game and that RB from 'Stone actually impressed me more than Larry. Larry ran very high (he looked pretty tall to begin with). I kept thinking he'd get pummelled if he played @ Akron. But Larry's got a lot of potential, so I hope he gets a walk-on invite. Maybe convert him to LB?
  13. Wow. That's too bad, because, like I mentioned earlier, he's the most successful coach Green's ever had. I don't think any other coach ever took a team to the state playoffs.
  14. This is a bit off topic and concerns next season, but does anyone know how Steve Swiech is progressing? Does it look like he's going to be able to fill Jeremiah's shoes next season?
  15. Does anyone know what happened to Elden Vickers at Green?? Man -- my first experience with organized sports was with the Green JHS 7th grade football, and that was Mr Vickers' first year coaching and teaching at Green. About 1971! Hey -- maybe he retired. That's longer ago than I want to imagine (or admit). BTW -- anyone remember Green track coach Mr Kelly brawling with Walter "No Neck" Williams of the Cleveland Indians basketball team? Wasn't his name Elden McVicker? I had Mr. McVicker (if I'm remembering correctly) for high school gym class my freshman and sophomore years. He was a good guy. A few years after I graduated he was named head football coach and did a great job! He's the most successful football coach Green has ever had. He was getting up there in years though, so I'm assuming he retired.
  16. What's happening to our society? Columbine seemed to start a new and troubling descent. In the past month there have been 7 shootings at public gatherings. Sin is definitely alive and well in this world and in the hearts and minds of men. It makes you cry out like the apostle John in the next to last verse of Revelation, "Come quickly Lord Jesus!" But until that day my humble prayers go out to the entire NIU community and especially to those families who will be forever changed by this tragedy.
  17. Haha! I was thinking the same! I love that reference! It's catchy too! I'm gonna have to remember that one and use it once in a while. I hope I go Tarver at the church league tonight! Fortunately for me, there's not much D played in the church league either!
  18. I know Brett McKnight's not great on defense, but was he THAT bad last night? I'm no basketball analyst, so honestly, I don't know... but I doubt it. Jeez. This kinda goes back to a thread I started a week or two ago which I called: "KD's Coaching Strategy, Doesn't This Break Positive Momentum?" In the post I said that I had noticed that KD sometimes takes a player OUT of a game immediately after that player's either made a good play or shot - usually a big shot. I asked some of the more knowledgeable posters if they'd shed some light on this puzzling tendancy. KD did it again last night w/ Brett McKnight. I just don't get it. Just from playing at the YMCA I know that you're supposed to, "Feed the hot man," not take him out of the game. The only logical conclusion I can draw is, yeah, Brett McKnight is in fact THAT bad on defense. But, like I said, I didn't see him playing THAT bad last night.
  19. According to a player on the team, Akron will be sponsored by the LeBron line next season. UA had a contract that with Adidas that expires after this season. I look forward to seeing all the new gear! That would be for all sports, not just basketball, right? So we'll have new football uniforms as well?
  20. Man, I wish I felt like you! Honestly, I'm a bit demoralized right now. I'm thinking Wood is going to put on a lot of weight while he's out and not be half the player he was earlier in the season when he finally comes back. And Cedric looks as if he's been hurting for most of the year now. I love our youngs guys, but, man, I just don't think this is our year. I'm still gonna be at Tuesday nights game cheering all night long! But in the back of my mind, I've got to be honest, I really have my doubts. But I hope you're right!Go Zips!
  21. How did his high school coach not know that was a bunch of BS?
  22. His height being listed must be a typo, because Alex is only 5-10 -to- 5-11.But 43 points?! Dang.
  23. This might be crying over spilled milk (man, I sound like my grandma!), but this really seems to have been a wasted year for Brett McKnight. I wish we would have redshirted him.
  24. I was thinking the same. He'd make an ideal rover. He's big (6-4, 205 - prolly 215 by next season) and aggressive. Also athletic enough to cover in the backfield. He may start next year.
