I remember when it debuted, most on this board were happy that the Zips drew a line in the sand with OSU. They are competition. If you're a Zips fan, ya better not be an OU fan, an OSU fan, a Can't fan, a Cleveland State fan, or a Pitt fan. I suppose if ya like Cal or USC or UCLA... well, who cares. That'd be far off enough not to be real competition. But NOT Columbus State or Pitt!!!! They're called COMPETITION, folks! But I think it's kinda funny seeing old grandpa-dudes coming into the JAR with Buckeye stuff on. Those old geezers out for a nice evening. They should be welcomed with open arms. I don't think anyone should get on someone for ignorance. But I think it's good to see the U beginning to mark their territory, so to speak.

I'm in the dark here. What are you talking about?

I love the LeBron connection. I think the Zips should publicize the close connection as much and as often as possible. BUT NOT TONIGHT!!!!!!!!! Tonight is Rome and Dru's night!!!!!!!! Night of all nights!?!?!?!? It's not LeBron's night! It's not Kevin Garnett's night! It's not Michael Jordan's night! It's Rome & Dru's night!!!!Incompetent morons! This has gotten so sickening so quickly!
-
Honestly, on a scale of 1-to-10, that easily ranks a 10! It's excellent.

I wasn't at the Miami game at the JAR, but I watched the Miami-Can't game on tv and I must say that Miami looked like a bunch of unathletic, white stiffs. Can't ran in circles around them. This is a bad loss. We never win games we should lose, and we occassionally lose games we should win. This is a team we should have beaten. I'm not optimistic about winning 3 games in Cleveland.

Miami's a big rival, but the games are always sooooooooo boooooooring!!!!!!!

If I had a say, I would vote for the spring game to be held in the indoor fieldhouse. In north east Ohio the weather is far too unpredictable in the spring. True, it's not as easy to see the field from the fieldhouse bleachers, but if it is true that we've got recruits coming to the game, it's probably important to not only show off the fieldhouse, but also to keep them AWAY from the Rubberbowl! Additionally, I like having a packed fieldhouse! I feel that to be a much more "electric" and encouraging environment than an empty Rubberbowl.

What does "preferred walk-on" mean, exactly? Does it mean they have an inside track on earning a scholarship next season? Are they eligible to play this season?

Mickey Baker Ends Up at Mizz State
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
What happened with him? I heard he was "awful?" How did our coaching staff miss so badly on that one? -
Now I know why PTI's Tony Kornheiser gets so upset with the illiterate viewer emails he has to decipher! But I agree! It was HUGE getting a game scheduled before we have to travel down to Columbus State. Walking into the shoe with both a QB and OL without ANY real game experience would have been a disaster!

What scares me so much about the MAC and about the post-season tourney in Cleveland is that on any given night, any team can be the victim of an upset. We may have... actually, we've already HAD an absolutely great season, but it could all come crashing down in an upset loss at The Q. Ugh, that would be heartbreaking for Dru & Rome! So I'm afraid that if and when we win it all in Cleveland, I may just feel more of a sense of relief rather than joy. Kind of a bummer.

Why would looking for a Top 25 B-ball ranking be "cheesy?" That's what I'm looking for! We may well win a national championship in soccer one day, and that'd be cool. But everyone knows that, on the American college scene, only football and basketball really matter. I don't think any Zips fan is deluded enough to be hoping for a national championship in either football or basketball, I know I'm not. But what I've been wishing for, for years now, is for our b-ball team to be a regular NCAA tourney qualifier, a regular NCAA first round winner (advance to the round of 32), a regular "high-teen - 20ish" Top 25 member, and have the potential for an occassional run at the Sweet 16.In football I've been dreaming for years that we'd dominate the MAC, and be often ranked in the lower regions of the Top 25 poll.I've been a pretty fanatical Zips fan for about 14 years now (since the last year of the Gerry Faust era, whatever year that was), and you know what?! I can honestly say that I feel my dreams aren't just "pipe dreams" any longer! I truly feel both KD and JD are taking our respective programs to this level!

halfcourt shot at the OU home game
Blue & Gold replied to akZORROrowdy's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Sweet! They didn't show that on 23. You looked smooth! I would've completely choked in front of that many people! I probably couldn't make a layup in front of the crowd at the JAR! -
KD has to get credit for Dru, Rome and Wood all being here. Hipsher wasn't responsible for their recruitment, KD was.But I don't see either Dials or Ced being able to run the point next year. They're both much more natural 2-guards. I've noticed that when Dru's not in the game the opponent presses our backcourt and both Dials and Ced have a really hard time with that. Neither can dribble like Dru. Dru's the team MVP. We're going to sorely miss him next year. So here's to hoping Steward (who is Ohio's top rated PG in this year's senior class) can come in, learn the position, and take Dru's vacated spot right away!I think Sweich will start early in his freshman year as well. With Wood moved over to power forward, we'll probably have the best center & PF in the MAC.So I think KD's recruiting well. But Rybak is a complete waste, and Conyers has been thoroughly disappointing. He doesn't ever look for his shot, create a shot, or drive to the hoop to draw a foul, which is what I was hoping for. I thought it would be nice to have a 6-4 shooting guard (Conyers) out there as oppossed to our current 6-1 guys (Dials and Ced - love both those guys though!)

Happy Valentine's Day! The recent blizzard may have thrown a curveball here, but today's the deadline for the board of trustees to hire the new construction manager for the new stadium. Someone had posted earlier that the U may even have some initial plans already and that we may see some architectural renderings as soon as the CM is hired. Is there any word out there as to the progress?
-
Hey, let's give props to TW23! They're doing a great job in these broadcasts! Infinitely better than ONN!!!!!!!!!!! With last night's weather, it was great to be able to watch the game at home. And I'm excited about being able to see tonights Can't State-Miami game. Now we've gotta convince them to take this show on the road and to get us the Zipperss away games!!!

OU game more Satisfying than Can't Game
Blue & Gold replied to Guzijeff's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I didn't venture out. I chickened out and watched the game on t.v. But on t.v. the Rowdies looked GREAT!!! I was pleasantly SHOCKED at the # of people at the game! Wow, getting 1500 to the JAR in that blizzard - great job Zips fans!!! -
This is the only time I would ever say this, but... Go Miami!!!

New Stadium: What should it look like?
Blue & Gold replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'd be in favor of a smaller horseshoe. Heck, couldn't we build a 20,000 seat horseshoe that could be easily expandable? But a straight-on east-west configuration could lead to some serious sun troubles. Since most of our games are held in the evening, the team facing west would have the sun straight in their faces. If you've sat on the eastside of the Rubber Bowl, you know how painful that sun glare can be! -
Because I lived in both Summit and the secondary snow belt. I always forget you guys don't get as much as we do. Thankfully we don't generally get nearly the snowfall that the snowbelt does. BUT RIGHT NOW WE ARE GETTING HAMMERED!!!

its official. im starting the campaign...
Blue & Gold replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football
Hey, lay off Timmyboy. I think he's just looking for something fun to do. I don't think ANYONE on this board honestly thinks anyone from Akron would/could ever win the heisman. I don't think the Heisman voters would ever pick a mid-major superstar over a BCS star. At least not in today's BCS-biased college football culture. -
Yeah. Just a few comments:1. MACReport ragged on us for not signing a RB?! Well, as already stated, Bryan Williams is a RB! (More talented than Morgan Williams for that matter - though Toledo will get Morgan for 4 years, where as we only get Bryan for 2.) And GARY PRIDE is a top RB too!!! Did they forget about him?!2. Yeah, I hope Morgan Williams does well. I wish he'd signed with us but, oh, well. But honestly, from what I hear, Toledo will be lucky to get him eligible. From what I hear he's not 'as dumb as a box of rocks,' or anything like that. I just hear he really struggles hard just to get passing grades. It will be a very real challenge for UT to get him eligible, let alone to keep him eligible.3. MACReport made it sound as if Matt Rodgers isn't a quality prospect because he was barely in the Pennsylvania Top 40. But he was ranked by Rivals as the 29th best dual-threat QB in the country! So, come on fellas. Talk about looking too hard for something negative. That gripe appears to be simply contrived.
-
No way! And we should expect as much... on the Ohio college scene, unless you are from The Columbus State University, you get screwed as often as possible! Well, screw them!

Blue & Gold replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football
David's got phenom ability. But I'm a little apprehensive about how our new starting QB, whoever that may be, is gonna play. Harvey's gotta have passes thrown on target to win the heisman. -
Concerning Can't as opposed to our recruiting, I believe Can't is starting 2 freshman guards who are athletic contributors. Can't say so much about our frosh. After how he tore up in high school, I must admit that McKnight isn't doing what I thought he would. He was 1st team D-1 all-Ohio for crying out loud. Is that negative commentary about the quality of basketball here in the state of Ohio? Hopefully he'll turn a corner. But it doesn't look like it will happen this year. I had heard he is better than Romeo was as a freshman? Honestly, I don't specifically remember Romeo's freshman year, but I really have to doubt McKnight is contributing more than Rome did.
