KD has said repeatedly that you don't win with freshmen and sophomores. Next year we'll probably see that played out. Oh, well. It'll still be a fun team to watch and cheer for. It'll also be fun to watch them develop.

I'd live in a cardboard box under a freeway bridge... if it were in Hawaii! Akron? Not so much.

Ha! Sadly, quite true! It's why we're such a close-knit community, a bunch of unbelievable diehards! But we're all gonna be able to say that we were here from the beginning - before being a Zips fan was the cool trend - before The Info is built and we average 25K a game and (eventually) crack into a Top 25 ranking!I believe my favorite Zip memory is also a loss. I loved the MAC championship game in Detroit, didn't we all. But I actually believe my favorite Zips memory is our narrow loss to nationally ranked (14th?) Virginia Tech at the Rubber Bowl about 15ish years ago. We were down by, oh, 10-14 points, maybe, with about 1 minute to go. No chance of winning, really, but it just seemed like everyone in the stadium was so proud of how well both our O and D had played up to that point, that no one in the stadium was down on the team at all. (I believe we may have lost in Blacksburg the previous year by 40, or something gawdawful like that.) Then Willie Spencer hit someone for a 20-25 yard TD pass and the Rubberbowl just absolutely exploded! Even though we still had no chance of actually winning the game. That's how sports should be - it's far from life and death. Everyone yelling and jumping and giving high-fives to absolute strangers even though we knew we were still gonna lose. That's the coolest experience of die hard Zips community I've ever experienced. Winning is easy (Buckeyes ); lots of frontrunners and posers there. That's human nature. But sticking through losing together, ah, now that's real community! That's ZipsNation! Zip for life!

If he's a Zip, that kinda gives us an extra scholarship right? Doesn't he go to Akron for free since his dad is an employee?

Next year we're gonna have 4 incredibly athletic guards - Steward, Humpty, Roberts & Sullivan plus a more seasoned McKnees - all of whom can handle the ball and score it. We'll also have Brett McKnight - he's gonna be a special player. But I think next year's success will ultimately depend upon the play of our 2 interior players, Chris McKnight & Sweich. If they both live up to their potential I think we'll be fine. I'm gonna really miss watching the trinity of Wood, Dials & Ced though! Gotta take advantage of having those 3 and enjoy watching every game this year!

Hello, I sometimes browse zipsnation.org to see what's going on, and I couldn't help myself to interject here. Singletary has a very rough life coming from a very difficult family situation. While there's never an excuse for bad behavior, I just ask that you really get all the facts before you label someone. As for JC, I have nothing but respect for this man, and so do many who are outside of the Can't State community. Can't State acted promptly with the suspension and I think thats commendable. They could have let it go, no one holds a team to team rules other than the team itself. It shows character of both JC and the AD.Best of luck to you guys in your next game.Hopefully Chris gets it together. The last thing he needs is to be dismissed from the team and his scholarship. He's a very good player but definitely needs that college degree. Getting a DUI can be all-too-easy; sometimes it's just a matter of having just one beer too many for the law, and then having the misfortune of being pulled over. I once had a friend cited for DUI and he said he didn't even feel the least-bit tipsy. Most D-1 college athletes have a pretty big ego and a definite dark side/wild streak. I think it's what likely makes them such fierce competitors. But hopefully, for his own good, CS shapes up now. Plan ahead - get a designated driver, call a cab, walk 1/2 a mile...

Temple WR Recruit Flys the Coop
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Yeah, honestly. What was that all about? -
Though he's definitely not a scorer, he does sound mentally tough. He got dunked on in that game, but instead of hanging his head and getting sheepish, he got mad. That's a good sign. I guess after he got dunked on (and the opposing teams' student section was rocking) he went on to block shots on the next 3 consecutive possessions. That'll quiet a crowd!

Thanks for the update. He's gonna be another quick, athletic scorer added to our lineup next season. Knowing his size - 5-10 - I've heard he models his game on Allen Iverson. It's gonna be nice having 4 fast, quick, athletic guards (albeit undersized) on next years squad: Darryl Roberts, Ronnie Steward, Humpty Hitchens and Alex Sullivan. That'll have to be the most athletic back court in the MAC.

Humpty Hitchins Update
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
In regards to the above story link, Humpty finished with a game high 30 points. He really sounds like a clutch player. And reading his quotes, he also sounds calm yet intense, intelligent and well spoken. Gotta love Dials, but he is playing out of position at the PG this year; taking one for the team. But after watching the Can't State & CMU games, man, I'm really looking forward to seeing both Humpty and Steward in Zips uni's next season! -

Because I wrote it.If you elect to believe Scout or Rivals info on UA over mine, that's your call. Or maybe you question it because it isn't in the Beacon? Either way, it's up to you where you choose to obtain your Zips recruiting info.CK's right. Once I discovered ZipsNation it only took one recruiting season for me to cancel my subscription to Rivals. The information on here is almost always months ahead of either Rivals or Scout. Perusing through Scout & Rivals is still a lot of fun, but as far as accurate, up to date information goes, this is the place, and generally, CK is the man! -
Is there going to be any way to watch the game online?

I think the trustees are betting on InfoCision Stadium to really raise the awareness of UA in the midwest. I think the facility will serve to demarcate Akron as the definitive school in the MAC. The trustees are aggressive and I like that. For as long as I can recall UA has enjoyed exceedingly little good will within the community. Over the next few years I believe we will begin to see that change. I believe the future is very bright for this U. The city of Akron depends upon it.

Recruit List is Updated
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I think we all agree we are in desperate need for a QB. Last year was very enlightening for me - I had always heard how vital QB play is; the general on the field. However I had never actually witnessed how poor QB play could ruin an otherwise very strong team. Last year I saw it for myself. In baseball they say pitching is 90% of the game. In football I'd say QB play is 70% of the game! Our defense held OSU to 20 points. Our O-line was decent and continued to improve throughout the year. We had 2 Big Ten caliber running backs. But the QBs? Ouch. I think that by years' end our D was pretty demoralized knowing that no matter how many stops they may have gotten, they'd be right back out on the field after 3 plays as the O just couldn't get a first down, let alone put the ball in the end zone. -
Not suprised, but Akron GETTING ABUSED!!!
Blue & Gold replied to Zip90's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
OK this was somewhat clever but not that amazing. I'm sure if people dressed up in Akron gear came over with a sign we would do the same thing... thats like me sitting in a lecture class with 200 students and in the middle of it going "OH BURN, I'M NOT IN THIS CLASS, IN YOUR FACE"... LOLI liked it. You guys were brave souls to be down there amid the classes, vulgar, quite-less-than-creative unwashed masses that are your average Can't students. Once again, the AK-Rowdies shined brighter than the Can't students at the MACC. Good job! -

This is exactly right. Last year Wood utterly demolished both Q and Scott, but Romeo was down there banging alongside Wood. Our duo was better than their duo. But this year Wood is alone. Thus both Scott, and especially Q, played w/ a lot more confidence last night than in any of the 3 games last year. Q's offensive game is still very truncated, but he knows he just has to stand down there and put rebounds back, while Scott is a scorer. We need Chris McKnight to come into his own over the next month and muscle Q around next time we see them (Q doesn't weigh much & seems to be mentally fragile when a heavier guy bullies him around - which both Rome & Wood did last year. In those situations Q all but vanishes.)But having said that, I was pleased w/ Chris McKnight's offensive play last night. He had 6 points (I thought he had 7 but a shot i thought was a 3 was only a long 2). That coming in the most intense game he's surely ever played in. Hopefully that gives Chris confidence & he starts showing what we all know he's capable of. If he can hit those mid-range jumpers and bang down low for rebounds, we will be okay.(As an aside - I'm rambling now - his "little" brother Brett has all the confidence in the world! Man, I think he should be getting more time on the floor. He's going to be a great player for us, maybe the teams best player next year?) -
I have 2 general admission tickets to tonight's game. Is there a spot where most Zips fans will be seated? I know my friend & I would have a lot more fun if we're not surrounded by Can't fans.

I'm still watching Dominik Britt's status on Rivals. But I guess he's visiting Pitt later this week.

Calvin Johnson-WR-Detroit Lions #2 overall draft pick from 2007. 6'5" 239lbs ran a 4.39.You're right! I suppose I shouldn't have said, "no way." Instead I should have said, "Wow! That's EXCEEDINGLY RARE!" I sure hope it's accurate! I don't have time to look up the info on this, but that's probably bigger and faster than Jason Taylor was when he played for us! I think JT was a 4.7 guy - which was amazing for his height.
-
I see George Mason is at #7. I don't recall the score, but I do know that Can't hammered GM earlier this year.

Those gold uni's from two or three years ago were nice. I remember being pissed because they gave them to all the RAs and I never even saw them for sale anywhere. BTW, the good guys will probably be in blue tomorrow. Two thingys: 1) We've recently had 2 nice versions of the gold uni's: firstly during Rome & Dru's junior season - I believe they wore them for most of the home games. They were great! And secondly, for the Nevada game last year; that's the only time I remember seeing them. It's not like the gold jinxed us - we played Nevada tough!2) Did you guys happen to see Can't's black uni's on tv Saturday night? At least they're trying to think outside the box, but I thought they were a little much. Pretty ugly. But I think Can't is actually embracing ugly/gaudy right now - kinda like the Oregon of the midwest? I heard that for one of their home football games this year they went w/ the all yellow look. Hard on the eyes; but again, I think they're embracing that?
-
Rivals has Hazime listed at 6-5 & 235 w/ a 4.5 40?! I'm not doubting his size, but there's no way someone w/ that size runs a 4.5 40!
-
I wish we'd break out gold uni's. The white are fine, but nothing special; kinda ho-hum boring. I love the gold uniforms look. Very cool. Every school in America has a white uniform. Gold? Not so much.
-
I MUCH prefer our gold to Can't's ugly yellow!
