  1. Nice video of one of their "blunders". I'm sure we'll never get to see a video of their first goal...the one Jake saved, but the AR said went in. Nevermind soccer is not like American Football; the ENTIRE ball must go over the goal line to score.
  2. Absolutely was the perfect time and well done ... Jared started the "conversation" with the ref and then Leo came over and took the YC. Players were definitely fired up after that. Great job!!
  3. I don't agree, but I respect the opinion you state here. Two years is too short to prove or disprove your statement in my opinion. I believe a minimum 5 years is required for a person to show what he can (or cannot) do unless he's totally incompetent. Who is on your list of "elite" coaches that you wanted to come to Akron? Have any of them done as you expect to see at Akron? How do you know they would have lived up to your expectations? How long would you have given any one of them to meet your expectation in the standings and recruiting? I also disagree that Akron lost its chance to lure some other "elite" coach to our program. The evidence is there that Akron cares about its soccer program and that large crowds can be expected if they like the product they see. We have achievements to which to point to show what we want/expect and, although not as spectacular as a few others, we have one of the best soccer stadiums in NCAA D-I. Many schools larger than Akron still play on artifical surfaces and/or in the middle of their track. Our fans sit close to a beautifully maintained grass field specifically for soccer. And, we show respect for our soccer teams by not letting just anyone use it. We can also point out that Ohio's MLS team has played a US Open Cup match on our field, and was planning to do so again had they been awarded the home game. That is the type of relationship we need to have and or maintain to continue padding our resume.
  4. At a-zip ... Do I already know you and not realize it? I was at the Georgetown game and had to leave right after congratulating the guys on their win to get across town to see USMNT beat Peru. I'd like to at least say "hi" at the Maryland match tomorrow night. Friday in DC was awesome at Georgetown and RFK.
  5. I'm done. I'm so sick of this crap about our current head coach and our elite program and yada yada yada how we could have hired anyone. If that were true where the hell were all of these awesome coaches. I don't recall anyone beating down the door of our well meaning but clueless AD. I want to win another College Cup, too, but it is not as easy as you folks make it sound. Ask Ken Lolla. OMG, when Ken left, you'd have thought it was the end of Zips Mens Soccer. Caleb Porter began in 2006, correct? What did Akron accomplish in 2006, 2007, and 2008? Caleb didn't go to the College Cup until 2009. Then again in 2010 when we won it all. What did Caleb's teams do in 2011 and 2012? I think Caleb Porter is the greatest coach in Akron Zips history, but even he struggled. Who analyzed the film in preparation for games when Caleb was HC...Jared Embick. Can we stop with the f'ing Coastal Carolina crap, please. Ok, Coach Docking was a former Zip...great. Coastal has yet to appear in the College Cup, let alone win one. When he wins one, then maybe I'll listen. In the meantime, I'm sick of reading all this bitching. The Zips are in good, capable hands. It would be so much more productive if fans would encourage our players and coaches rather than tearing them down.
  6. Even Caleb Porter has grown to learn that sometimes on the road you have to make defending the priority and hope for a good counter attack. At minimum, you try to get a tie on the opponents' field. I didn't see the game; so, I don't know what the breakdowns were. Giving up 4 goals ... defending had to have been deplorable. Need to learn and move on.
  7. DeAndre Yedlin among the 23 players that JK called for CONCACAF Cup tune-ups against Peru and Brazil. September 4th in D.C. will be busy. Always a pleasure to visit with Bisbee and the Mrs., too. Zips in D.C.
  8. Thanks for the posts mes102. Like what I heard from Coach Herlihy. @fknbuflobo perhaps it is time to attend some Women's games. Maybe the Pitt game on Sunday Sep 13th.
  9. Carry over from last season? Does that happen in the pro ranks, too? I despise many of the differences between NCAA rules and FIFA rules. I don't understand why NCAA seems to revisit American football rules every year, but not soccer rules. To make NCAA soccer more pertinent development for the pros, I'd like to see... Clock that counts upA single substitution per player; once you're subbed out, you're out (no re-entry).Sub up to 7 players (full 18 match-available players).Although it worked out for the Zips v VCU, eliminate OT during regular season matches. If tied at the end of 90 ... declare tie, 1 point each. College students shouldn't have to play these extended games except in tournament competition. Now that my rant is over, EXCELLENT start to the season by Zips Mens Soccer last night. There are always things to improve upon, but a W on the road at VCU is most excellent. Keep it going Zips. 2ndStar Thanks VCU/Coach Giffard for putting together such an awesome schedule. Gotta love the Zips and Rams helping each other with RPI this season!
  10. I love Steve Z, but I think he's not included due to his physical inability to compete as he once did. I can't fault the writer for considering that. However, I do agree that Scotty Caldwell has to be in the starting line up. He is bedrock for the Revs and doesn't get the accolades he deserves because he's not flashy and doesn't score much. As you said, he's soccer smart and knows and does what is needed of him.
  11. I will be at both Georgetown and Maryland. Did you happen to notice on Sept 4th the Zips play Georgetown at 4 pm ET and the USMNT plays Peru (friendly) across town at RFK at 7 pm. Not sure when the USMNT roster will be announced, but if DeAndre is included, a mad dash across town will be in order for this Zips Soccer fan.
  12. http://ow.ly/RmMVw Good introductory press conference. I like the vision starting at 9:10. Didn't say how to make it happen, but unlike his predecesser, he's embracing soccer.
  13. Colorado Rapids thrilled to make Dillon Serna's 1st-minute goal stand up in "huge" result vs. Fire

  15. I don't like the way Scarborough has been operating... do something, tell us that the media has reported it incorrectly, then tell us a different story. It's all very shady. It's a public university. He should be able to operate transparently for the most part. Also, I don't understand why UA has a Board of Trustees. All they ever seem to do is rubber stamp whatever the Prez brings them, be it Scarborough, Proenza, or any of their predecessors. Group think is not a good way to operate. Do those apparent stemwinders get any pay from UA? If so, there's some savings to be had there by eliminating completely unnecessary figurehead positions.
  16. I still think that was additional punishment for what occurred at Marquette the year before. That should be completely behind us now.
  17. If so, then he's got even better credentials than I realized. The ability to control the weather is most impressive.
  18. http://gozips.com/general/2015-16/Releases/WIlliams_Larry_Release_081815 I'm optimistic about his credentials... Williams brings a diverse athletics background and proven track record with him to Akron. Throughout his career, he has been a NCAA Division I athletic director, collegiate and professional athlete, including a stint with the Cleveland Browns, practicing attorney, media talent, university marketing administrator, and most recently, a top executive in the corporate trademark licensing and marketing industry. Williams comes to the University from Equity Management, Inc., where he led the nation's largest corporate licensing program, increasing marketing, royalties, and branding. Prior to that, Williams directed the athletics department at two universities, focusing on competitive excellence, academic success, and business fundamentals. As the vice president and director of athletics at Marquette University, Williams saw the Golden Eagles achieve unprecedented broad-based excellence. The men's basketball team reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite 8. Marquette was one of only two schools to have its men's soccer, women's soccer, and women's volleyball teams receive NCAA berths in back-to-back years and Top 10 RPI rankings in 2013. Likewise, the Portland Pilots, under Williams' leadership, won a NCAA Division I Championship in women's soccer in 2005, and earned Top 10 finishes in men's cross country as well as first-ever national rankings in men's basketball, baseball, and tennis. Williams' business acumen was also demonstrated when he spearheaded Marquette's membership into the new Big East Conference, increasing media revenue and television exposure; and oversaw significant facility expansion, including a new soccer stadium and a training center for all student-athletes. I will admit, I'm a little concerned about his Notre Dame connection. That has not worked well for UA in the past. Hopefully, the 3rd time is a charm, as the old adage goes.
  19. Yes, and how did his predecessor do? Where were his recruiting classes ranked? I seem to recall the Zips being ranked #1 sometime during a season in which he coached. I'm sorry, but I can't stand the pessimism. Our players deserve our full, optimistic support. I like this recruiting class and the time that most of this team has had together.
  20. "High School: Akron", huh?
  21. Perhaps this ... --------------Holthusen--------------- ---- Belana --- Najem --- Laryea ------- Souto -------- Dambrot -------- Souders -- Clarke -- Ruhaak -- Cregan -------------- Fenlason -----------------
  22. ZippyRulz and DiG ... those who feel entitled can rationalize anything. The $950,000 spent on the president's home in and of itself may not be a big deal. However, when the university is dealing with a $60M shortfall, fees are being raised (albeit rescinded after a backlash from state lawmakers), cutbacks are being made, people are losing their jobs, and students are taking out loans equivalent to some mortgages, it is poor judgement to spend that amount of money renovating a home, especially when it includes any amount of university funding. They should have stopped short of expending university funds. For example, what effect on fundraising does renovating and refurnishing the president's bedroom have, or as has been pointed out, providing an in-law suite? I'm happy you are both so well off that you're totally comfortable with this. People who lost their jobs and students/parents struggling to pay for their education aren't so fortunate. We are a country of excess. $18 trillion in debt and counting. Those in the public sector rationalize their overspending as helping the poor and destitute. In reality, they're enabling people to not take responsibility for themselves and work for a living. Then they add to the problem by heavily taxing the middle class and pushing them into poverty. Some say Ronald Reagan was a great president because economic times were good. No, the US just started the huge deficits at that time. Everything looks great when you first start borrowing. Later, when you've borrowed too much, it's not so pleasant. I give Scarborough credit for making tough decisions to get a handle on UA's finances and taking the heat for cleaning up a mess he didn't create. However, he and his leadership team need to be diligent in exerising good judgement in every expenditure they make. Some will have have risk worth taking and may not pay off. In the case of these renovations, I can't see spending any university funds to have been necessary. Stopping at the limit of the private funds should have been sufficient. I'll drop it now because it's done and not worth discussing further.
  23. It's not just the details, it's the total. $1M is EXCESSIVE. I would contend that Dr. Scarborough could leverage <$500,000, for example, in renovations as effectively as $1M. What will we use as the descriminator to ever say that extra $500,000+ was money well spent?
