Scout.com Updates for 2008
rocketfootball replied to K-Roo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I think Scout posted something wrong. Ty visited Toledo over the weekend and committed to the Rockets then. It was also in the Tampa Tribune yesterday. My guess is that Scout accidentily listed him as an Akron commit instead of Toledo commit when they updated their database this morning. -

Not to mention their school system is different and you are in high school at age 19 instead of 18 like in the US. -
UT (Scooter) Point Shaving Charges Dropped?
rocketfootball replied to rocketfootball's topic in Akron Zips Football
Charges were officially dropped in US District Court yesterday. The US Attorney's office said they need more time to compile the evidence and will likely charge Scooter with something at a later date.Scooter's attorney doesn't know if there will be charges brought forward again, but he is asking the question of why the FBI and US Attorney office charged him and made these claims in the affadavit if they did not have enough evidence to proceed with a trial at this time. -
The US Attorney's office in Detroit has confirmed that they are cancelling the pretrial scheduled for Friday and will be dropping the affadavit complaint against Scooter McDougle. They did however say that the investigation into Scooter will continue and they could seek new charges and/or an indictment in the future.Translation - they didn't have enough evidence to even get a grand jury indictment, not alone a conviction and they need to keep working the case to try and get more evidence...............or they have been and will continue to use Scooter to try and get more evidence on this Gary guy to charge him with something. There's no doubt in my mind that Scooter did at least something wrong here, but there just doesn't seem to be enough evidence and exactly what Scooter did that was wrong is unclear. As I have said before, we probably will never know everything about this incident. The question now is going to be will Scooter ever get charged or indicted?

Yet Another Toledo RB Arrest
rocketfootball replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Some fans seem to be upset with him based on last year's 5-7 season (first losing season in 13 years) and also because he seems to be a bit soft on discipline with the players. That said, I really don't believe he is anywhere near the hot seat in the athletic diretor's eyes, nor the president's eyes. Another bad season and more off the field issues would start warming up the seat, but not right now. -
Yet Another Toledo RB Arrest

Well they both came from Warren, OH and all, but MO had more than one incident and is clearly insane. Davis may only be one of the biggest dumb asses in the world and not actually insane. -
Yet Another Toledo RB Arrest
rocketfootball replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Scooter and Davis have made some really stupid decisions and it is really hurting the University's image because of it.As for Ray Williams, I wouldn't go there. He was NEVER on the UT roster. He asked to walk-on twice, was denied the first time and allowed to practice with the team on Fridays and Saturdays in the spring the second time but was never officially on a UT roster and he was NOT on the team last fall before his incident at the bookstore. He was never recruited by UT and never on scholarship. And further, Ray Williams had two options for college after his arrest. He had to stay in Ohio and two schools said they would take him in, most likely because of open enrollment. Those two schools were Toledo and Akron. That's right, Akron. You guys were just lucky enough that he chose Toledo instead. So please don't confuse Ray Williams with UT football and scholarship players. Now, that said. UT needs to do something to take care of these issues, and they need to do something fast. Who knows what will become of Scooter-gate and who knows what this Richard Davis thing is all about. One rumor among some is that it actually has to do with Scooter, but I hate spreading rumors that could be completely wrong. Either way, Toledo needs to nip this in the butt. But I am still a diehard Rocket fan and I always will be. I've been a diehard Rocket fan through good times and bad times and I know that UT will get past this just like any other program in the country have been able to do when they had issues happen. -
The University of Toledo has a 14 year deal with Learfield that just began this past December. Hey, maybe with this marketing deal they can come up with cool ways to promote the next arrest at UT?

Coffman WR interested in Akron Football
rocketfootball replied to jerryfairchild's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Well that takes Toledo out of the picture. Seriously though, we need to keep great talent within the MAC. Akron has some impressive facility upgrades coming. We are suprised that Toledo has not been more interested, but they said they move very slowly compared to most schools. We just brought in two 3-star receivers and a 3-star running back that can also play the slot receiver in this last recruiting class at Toledo, and only have two seniors at receiver this fall so we are probably being very selective before we will pick one or two receivers to go after hard. -

New updates on this scandal today. This White guy from Vegas now says that he did not contact the NCAA and Las Vegas Gaming Commission in October of 2005 like he originally said. Now he says he did so in the summer of 2006.The NCAA has said that they never received any type of contact from him and did not hear anything about this until Toledo contacted them late last Friday after UT heard about it for the first time from the FBI when they told UT's President that Scooter was being charged. The Las Vegas Gaming Commission says they found no evidence of anything and closed their investigation in December of 2006, but said that other agencies were investigating the issue at that point. I assume that is meant to be the FBI.An adult neighbor of Scooter's told the Toledo Blade that she never saw any nice cars at his house and doesn't know where he could have put this car he supposedly received because the only car he ever had and drove was his sister's car.Scooter's parents say they received a call from his position coach at UT on Friday afternoon because Scooter was not at practice and he never misses practice and he wanted to know if they knew why he wasn't there. His parents say that the FBI did not permit Scooter to call home until Saturday afternoon, so they heard about his arrest and charge from his high school coach who read about it on ESPN Friday evening. This is getting really weird. People are contradicting themselves. Neither the NCAA nor UT appears to have known anything until Friday when the FBI contacted UT. You have to think that Scooter is at least guilty of taking bribes and gifts, but maybe the car part at least isn't true. I imagine that something bad has definitely happened, but will we ever know exactly what and to what extent? Who is telling the truth here? Man is this frustrating as a UT fan right now.

doesnt toledo have their own board? JW why your on this one, that is why i said this AKRON ZIPS board timmyboy, have you never seen an opposing fan come to the Akron board? I've provided some recruiting information over here from time to time and I have never come over here and said anything bad about Akron, so I don't understand your problem with me. You seem to be the only one with that problem though. Kind of makes you wonder.Toledo has 3 or 4 active message boards to be honest and Akron fans are completely welcome on at least a couple of them.
-
First, the laugh icon after the anal bast*** thing was meant to show it was a joke.Second, your last reply makes you sound like an arrogant OSU fan that feels you are above me.............AKRON ZIPS board!Third, I was off by a few yards and it is only because it wasn't a big deal to get the exact numbers. Does everyone that talks to you have to use exact words? Are you one of those kind of persons? Now, you made a mistake too but I didn't say anything about it because it really isn't a big deal. But since you want exactness........You said that the MAC site says Parmele rushed for 1,131 and the UT site says 1,170. The UT site also says 1,131. The 1,170 you saw on the UT site is under the Gain category, with 39 yards on the Loss category and 1,131 on the Net gain category.Perhaps you should make sure you are smart enough to do the proper research before attempting to slam someone else.
-
So, who are you betting on to be the starter?Bet you click here if you want more information Funny play on words. Parmele rushed for over 1,200 yards last year and will be our starting running back again this fall. There is another article on ESPN, different than the one you linked to, that talks to the guy in Vegas that tipped off the gaming commission and the NCAA. He says that Toledo and another MAC school had unusual betting patterns in their games in 2004. Then all of a sudden the other MAC school, which he declined to name, stopped having the unusual betting patterns but Toledo's continued through 2005. He and his associates watched all the game film on UT's games and couldn't find where any player, coach, or referee did anything wrong to fix games. But because of the unusual betting patterns (Vegas was losing large money on these games) they contacted the NCAA and gaming commission anyway in October of 2005. In November of 2005 the FBI wire-tapped "Gary's" phone so I have a feeling that the NCAA or gaming commission then contacted the FBI after receiving the information on unusual betting patterns. I knew Toledo didnt have a 1200 yard rusher last year so i double check and i was correct. Parmele had 1131 yards last year (according to the MAC website and 1,170 according to toledo's), and an average of 94.2 YPGGarrett Wolff was the only MAC player to top 1200 yards last year ( 1,928 rushing yards and 148.3 YPG)Akron RB Dennis Kennedy was the 5th best RB in the league last season with 914 rushing yards (999 according to akrons site) and an average of 83.1 YPG.......... and this is playing over 1/2 of the year injured!Next time you are going to throw stats up on the board rocket, make sure they are accurate Oh my God are you an anal bast***. It was just over 1,100....not 1,200. That's a really big difference. For the way Toledo's offense played last year 800 yards would be good. Parmele gained most of his yards in the last 5 games of the season when Toledo finally decided to stop throwing the minus one yard pass to the tight end on every play and decided to run the ball.Parmele is going to be a serious force this year, and I know that scouts are looking at him for a NFL career after the 2007 season is over.I'm so glad you're Kennedy dude was 5th in the MAC in rushing. I know he had a very good game against UT, rushing for 119 yards and 5.0 ypc average so I know that he is a very good running back.Interestingly enough, Akron as a team had a 3.1 ypc average against Toledo in that game and Toledo had a 3.5 ypc average. Kennedy had 119 yards and a 5.0 ypc average and Parmele had 145 yards and a 5.4 ypc average. QB sacks hurt both team's overall total rushing stats. Toledo did have rushing touchdowns by 4 different players in that game though, while Akron had just by 1.Jalen Parmele averaged 5.5 ypc for the season last year, and DaJuane Collins averaged 5.6 ypc for the season as a redshirt freshman. Richard Davis, another running back for us, had 21 receptions (3rd on the team in receptions) and added 282 yards rushing for us. Those three guys alone make us pretty deep at running back. Combining the three of them comes to 42 receptions, 1,674 yards (4.9 ypc average) and 14 rushing touchdowns. In contrast, Akron's entire team (taking out QB sacks) rushed for just under 1,200 yards (3.7 ypc average) and 13 touchdowns and 46 receptions. I hate to say it, but take out Dennis Kennedy and you have no one with any valuable DI-A experience and that is what depth is about!

Wow, you are so cool. In reality Toledo is in big trouble right now, but based on what we know it looks like the bulk of the trouble is going to go to Scooter and possibly one or two others and the institution itself won't be in much trouble. It could get worse though.Scooter was a very good player for UT in 2004 as we won the MACC. Then he hurt his knee and had a couple of surgeries. He hasn't been the same since and has hardly even got on the field. As for UT's depth, there are 8 players on the depth chart right now. That doesn't include incoming freshman Morgan Williams (he probably won't play this fall and you are right about that, but don't knock too much because Akron offered him a scholarship and wanted him), Hosea Simpson, Gordon Warner, and Adonis Thomas (originally committed to Kansas State before signing with Toledo). In all, Toledo signed three different running backs that were rated 3 stars by either Rivals, Scout, or both.Jalen Parmele will be a senior this year, with Richard Davis a junior, DaJuane Collins a sophomore (possibly the next great back at UT), Dontae Jones a redshirt freshman (3 star recruit from Orlando, Fl that was a Florida Top 100 player), and Bruce Frieson a redshirt freshman from Cleveland Glenville. Anyone after those guys are so far back on the depth chart they won't likely play. I wouldn't worry about UT's depth at running back.Back to this scandal. UT fans are ashamed that this has happened at UT. It's embarrassing and we want anyone involved to be removed from campus immediately.

here are a few more offers
rocketfootball replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Britt has an offer from Toledo and is very much interested. UT has been recruiting Trotwood Madison pretty hard the last couple of years and have offered three kids that will be seniors in 2007.Britt is tall, but skinny. He is going to need at least a year in a college weight and conditioning program and to learn the offense, no matter where he goes. -
There is no max. It's all about how many scholarships you have open off your 85. If we chose to sign 10 guys this year and had 40 open next year, we could sign 40 guys. With all the comings and goings we've seen my guess would be we have quite a few schollies on the table. That is incorrect. The NCAA Bylaws state that you are only allowed 25 initial scholarships per year, meaning 25 scholarships to give out in a recruiting class. However, there are a few exceptions. First, you can bring in greyshirts that actually sign now but don't receive their scholarships until January of 2008 so they count as one of the 25 initials for the 2008 class instead of the 2007 class. Also, I believe there are one or two other exceptions that can be used, but are used very rarely. I forget exactly what those exceptions are and I don't have the time to look up the bylaws right now. You do usually see a couple of schools each year that sign over the 25 initials max, and it is because of one of the exceptions.....greyshirt or other exceptions. The rules are no more than 85 total scholarships at any given time and a maximum of 25 initials per recruiting class.

All indications are that Bowling Green stays in the East. They want to stay in the East too. There will be 7 MAC East teams, with Temple also in the East, and 6 MAC West teams.Do not assume BG is going back to the West because they were before.

Scout.com Recruiting Rankings
rocketfootball replied to rln's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Needs repeating. Ranking recruits is fraudulent exercise. That article above is a good read. There is no way to know how good any of these kids are until later. We just have to trust JD and his recruiting staff to know what they are doing and so far you can't argue with his results. The only thing recruiting services do is drum up publicity for students they happen to think are good. Recruiting those students will get us publicity, but results are something much harder to masure that what you see on film. We have a good group of kids that have already created team chemistry, which is an intangible no one can coach. I believe that we have some special recruits and I know they will make us all proud to be Zips fans. This is where I disagree. They, as well as many of us, are confusing two different things here. The rankings are for rating how good a kid is coming into college and their potential. What happens 2-3 years from now is different though. If you are looking to rank how good a prospect is now and what their potential is, then the recruiting services normally do a decent job. But if you are looking for how good a team is going to be in 2-3 years with these recruits, or how good a kid is 2-3 years from now based on how he developed......then you shouldn't care or look at the recruiting services. A lot can happen and a kid might never reach his potential or might even exceed his potential based on the ability of the coaches at the school. But just because a kid never hits his potential does not mean that he was inaccurately pegged as a good recruit when he entered college. -
Scout.com Recruiting Rankings
rocketfootball replied to rln's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Scout lists Toledo 5th in the MAC in that, but in their national rankings Toledo is the 3rd highest MAC school.Gotta love the consistency there. -
I was wondering the same thing. I spoke to a U of A coach...not a hoops coach...regarding Conyers only a week or so ago. He stated the 80% rule was still in effect for all athletes. I'll have to check up on it. Maybe, if Conyers was admitted prior to the rule change, it wouldn't apply to him? Just a guess. Correct. There is a grandfather clause for those before the rule change. Not sure if you know some of the recruiting guru's around the MAC like Nick at Miami University and Mark at UT, but they can probably provide you some more insight on the rule change as they follow the rule changes a bit more closely than I do.

I hear ya, and really he is just icing on the cake for Toledo. If he gets eligible then watch out. If not, here's our roster for 2007 and their star rating when recruited:*** SR Scooter McDougle (if he can finally get healthy and in shape)** SR Jalen Parmele (pretty damn good for a 2 star recruit though)** JR Richard Davis (good speed, but is starting to get buried on the depth chart)*** SO DaJuane Collins (this kid can play and had the best YPC average on the team)*** R-FR Dontae Jones (been hearing a lot of good things about him)*** FR Gordon Warner (1,800 yards on a team in Florida that had another RB sign I-A)*** FR Morgan Williams (We will see if he gets eligible but look at our depth w/o him)** FR Adonis Thomas (originally committed to Kansas State and has 4.4 speed)Even without Scooter and Morgan if they don't pan out, we have six quality running backs in that list. I could see either Adonis Thomas and/or Gordon Warner redshirting if they are not used on kick returns and as slot receivers. Gordon Warner is a state ranked sprinter and one of the favorites in the state 400 meters this year. He can really fly.Anyone else in the MAC have 5 running backs on their roster that were rated three stars when being recruited? Our problem is going to be the quarterback position again. If Clint Cochran can't stay healthy again we may see Travaris Cadet have his redshirt taken off and that probably isn't a good thing since our playbook is pretty complicated and takes time to learn.
-
So if you are a non-qualifier and you sit out your first two semesters, you are guaranteed 4 years of eligibility? I though you needed to be 80% of your way towards a degree by your 4th year to be guaranteed a 5th year (4 "playing years")? When did that change? That's the old Prop 48 rule with the 80% thing. I think it changed at the NCAA's summer meeting last year. As long as you get eligible and stay eligible after sitting out that first year, you get 4 years to play 4 now.
-
He's a Prop, so you won't see his name until he is in good academic standing...hopefully after the spring semester. Technically there is no such thing as Prop 48 anymore. He can come to Akron and if he can't play this year, but gets his grades up for 2008 he will have 4 years to play 4.
