  1. That is very true. However, at the same time we get the highly regarded recruits too.Redshirt freshman running back DaJuane Collins is going to play a lot this year and may even be the starter. He was rated 3 stars by Rivals and ranked as the #50 running back in the nation. He had several scholarship offers......including Boston College, Penn State, Purdue, and Minnesota. He did official visits to Toledo and Minnesota and ended up choosing Toledo. This past recruiting season running back Dontae Jones signed with Toledo. Rated 3 stars by Scout.com and ranked as the #22 running back in the South, #88 running back in the country. Also on the Orlando Sentinel Top 100 players in Florida list. These are just two examples. Barry Church was a 3 star recruit last season that chose Toledo over Cincinnati, Maryland, NC State, Iowa, Indiana, and West Virginia. He was rated the #42 safety in the nation by Rivals and the #63 safety in the nation by Scout.DB Desmond Marrow was only 2 stars, but the co-Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Ohio Division IV and had offers from Miami University and Pittsburgh before signing with Toledo.DT Nate Cole was rated 3 stars by Scout and ranked as the #9 DT in the Midwest and 83rd nationally. Chose Toledo over UCF and Louisville.OL Jared DeWalt was a 3 star by Rivals and ranked #60 at offensive guard in the nation. Had offers from Akron, Miami University, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Bowling Green, and some other non-bcs schools before signing with Toledo.DE/ILB Joe Underwood was only 2 stars, but chose Toledo over Miami University, Akron, and Bowling Green.DE Sylaar Constant was only 2 stars, but chose Toledo over Miami University, Akron, Bowling Green, and Ohio University.DB Mark Jackson was only 2 stars, but chose Toledo over Akron, Miami University, and Vanderbilt.OL Jan Gewont rated 3 stars by Rivals and the #24 prospect regardless of position in the state of Illinois. Had offers from Kansas, Iowa State, UCONN, and several non-bcs schools before committing to Toledo.QB Aaron Opelt was only 2 stars, but did not attend any scouting combines. He was rated the #3 QB in the state of Ohio and #14 QB in the Midwest by Scout. Chose Toledo over Cincinnati.Several others received offers from BCS schools, but chose Toledo instead. Also, notice the theme of players that Akron offered that went to Toledo. If we can't get any good recruits, why are guys we are signing having offers from BCS schools and schools like Akron, BGSU, and Miami University?By the way, don't believe all that you read on Rivals or Scout. I looked at them closer and there are several good recruits that UT has offered and are in the mix for that the recruiting services don't mention Toledo at all.
  2. Wow, you are very smart. The point is that just because the recruiting services and media don't know of any verbals to Toledo and don't know of man recruits that Toledo is going after........doesn't mean that Toledo is having a down year in recruiting. It is the same for Toledo every year, and we always do OK in recruiting.
  3. There is a problem with using recruiting services, especially this early in the recruiting year. Toledo has always been very low on these lists and that has A LOT to do with our coaches wanting to keep things hush-hush. It's been that way ever since Amstutz has been the coach. He will not let any recruiting information leak out and he even appears to persuade recruits to keep things quiet. He tries to get recruits that verbal to keep quiet to the media.According to the public UT does not have any verbals yet, but that is probably not the case.A perfect example is DB Barry Church last year. He was publicly saying that it was between Toledo and Cincy from October through December. Finally, in late December he announced that he was going to Toledo. However, he actually verballed to the UT coaching staff back in June.Another example is RB Dontae Jones last year. The recruiting services didn't even list him with interest in Toledo until November. Yet he visited Toledo in September and verballed right away. Some players that signed with Toledo last year were not listed with offers (and some not even with interest) from Toledo until the day before signing day. Yet many of these guys verballed long before.Last year the first public verbal to Toledo was a kid that later decommitted to sign with UCONN. He publicly verballed to Toledo in July. The next public verbal was October. Yet Toledo had about 5 or 6 verbals before the season even started. This year Toledo doesn't have many scholarships open. He have 15 scholarship players that are seniors. Many of the players we have offered scholarships to have verballed to BCS schools. We are going after some really highly rated recruits. Rivals.com is not listing several of the players anymore that had offers from Toledo and verballed to other schools. There were at least 4 or 5 more 3-star players that now don't show up with even an offer from Toledo all of a sudden. Can't really figure that one out.Anyway, because we won't have a big class, we can be very selective and go for some really good recruits. And don't believe that UT hasn't received any verbals yet this year just because the public doesn't know about them.
  4. True, but Toledo has been ranked like 5 or 6 times in the last 10 years. Yet they only finished the season ranked twice in that span. There's a big difference between getting ranked during the season and finishing the season ranked.
  5. Marshall was too when they were in the MAC. As for NIU, they did not finish the season ranked in 2003. The only year they finished the season ranked was 1982.
  6. Right now we got our hands full with NIU. I don't know how you managed to beat them twice last season. Anyway, they are going to be very, very, very good this fall. They scare me A LOT!And unforunately their fans know just how good they are, so they believe they are already superior to all other MAC schools despite not winning a MAC Title since the mid 80's.
  7. It's all about timing folks. Today was my first visit back to your pouch since about a week or two ago, therefore the post.Of course, it is only taken bait if I would have sat here and said bad things.....which I did not. I merely explained common sense in the world in the 90's and 2000's as opposed to the 50's and the 60's where there was no Division I. I also said that it appears Akron has got to the point where the are a successful DI-A football school. Someone taking the bait would never say that.I have also never come here and said that Akron was not as good as Toledo....NEVER. So I know his comments about that are not about me, but some other Rocket fan(s).My last visit to this site, I said how sorry I was to hear about the accident the Florida recruit was in. The last time before that I said good luck against Penn State and I hope you beat them.By the way, I happen to run a website about UT athletics and I am in the MAC News Media Association and I feel no reason to keep my vote for MAC East Division winner a secret. When I voted about 2 weeks ago, I selected Akron to win the MAC East. You won't hear me putting down the Akron football program.
  8. Not sure what you are trying to say here. Toledo joined the MAC in the 50's. It was a much different era and there wasn't even the DI-A and DI-AA classifications. Of course after the first 16 years in the MAC, Toledo won 4 of the next 5 MAC titles. I doubt Akron, or anyone for that, is going to win 3 of the next 4 titles (Akron won last year so that would give them 4 of 5).Finally, Division I didn't even come about until 1973. Toledo has been in Division I ever since it started in 1973, but before that there was College Division and University Division. College Division is for smaller schools and that is what Toledo was when they joined the MAC up until 1962. In 1962 Toledo became University Division, which is for bigger schools. This is much like Division I.So, you should really compare UT's record at the highest level of competition which is from 1962 onward. In that first 14 years, Toledo went 78-55-2 overall. I don't know the exact conference record, but Toledo won 4 MAC titles in that span and had three seasons that they were undefeated in conference play.In today's game, it does take time to build a good DI-A program and Akron has appeared to finally get to that point. But you just can't compare today's game with the 1950's when Division I wasn't even really around.
  9. I'm sorry to hear that. My thoughts and prayers to Curtis, his family, and everyone at Akron.
  10. That's a lot of good information. I can't believe that some of them are as cheap as $10 per seat per game. That's a great bargain.
  11. You can buy season tickets at Akron without giving a donation? Wow!
  12. My tickets are reserved seats and they are $65 per seat and I get two for $130 plus $5 shipping. One thing that stood out to me was the price of a Toledo GA seat on the Single Away Game Prices. They charge $24 per ticket. I wish Akron had the fan base to charge the same. Wow, those are cheap. UT does seem to charge a lot for tickets. I know we charge quite a bit more than Northern Illinois does, and then you get these NIU clowns on the MAC message boards talking about how they have the best attendance in the MAC. Well yeah, if UT's prices were as low as their prices they wouldn't be averaging a couple hundred fans per game more than UT.I believe Miami University offers pretty cheap season ticket prices too, which kind of surprised me since they have been good for so long.
  13. Why not just wait ten minutes before a game, find a scalper who has poor inventory control with about 25 tickets in his hand, offer him $25 each for a ticket and buy one? If you are willing to sit in a piss poor seat, you can get into any OSU game or any other game for a cheap price. In lieu of an OSU game, why not just buy season tickets to Akron (or whatever MAC school you are from), sit on the 50 yard line near the field and enjoy a good football game? Which reminds me, season ticket notices came in the mail today. Buy early, buy often...... I second GP's sentiments. What he said.Free public service translation from my post above: "suckeye game" = (is the same as) "OSU game"Regarding tickets .. and yes, even Columbus St. tickets .. I've tried to get them, and always get them .. at my price .. for big games also. The hard part is NEVER getting in the building .. it's holding down my lunch and beverages as 100k sheep practice spelling the 4 letter state name. Almost as entertaining as the identity crisis cheers at Penn St. That's very interesting. I've never been to an Ohio State game, and never really wanted to go to one, so I don't have the first-hand experience. I just know OSU fans that have gone down to Columbus and tailgate, but never go to the games because the only tickets they could find were very high priced from scalpers. As for the season ticket thing, that is UT's hope that people buy season tickets to UT in order to be able to purchase tickets to the UT/OSU game at Cleveland. Tickets for that game won't be part of the regular season ticket package, but my point was that you would have to be a season ticket holder at UT in order to get tickets for the UT/OSU game in Cleveland if you don't want to pay a higher price through ebay or scalpers or something.Who knows, maybe your plan will work though.
  14. Just curious to the price of your season tickets? UT's are $164 per seat for six home games. Four home games are $24 per seat and two home games (Kansas and Bowling Green) are $34 per seat.I know Toledo's are near the top of the MAC in terms of ticket price, no necessarily a good thing, but wondered where that compares to Akron's prices.
  15. I've never had the experience of not being able to get a ticket to an event I wanted to attend. Rarely, if ever, have I even paid more than face value for a ticket, anywhere (suckeye games included). And I don't have serious ties with anyone but my wife and kid. I guess I'm just planning my usual tactics on this one. It'll work out ... always does.Go Rockets (in this game). Have you ever tried to get tickets for an OSU game? Ohio State even has a waiting list for season tickets that usually you sit on for quite a few years before you get the opportunity to purchase them. This isn't going to be your average game where tickets will be easy to get.
  16. BGSU hosts Wisconsin there on September 2nd THIS year.I'm in the camp that says this is an OSU home game, no matter the structure of the payouts. There's just too many suckeye sheep in these parts for the UT fans to make a dent in the crowd.I'll probably do my part and don fear the roo gear and go root against the suckeyes for that game. I don't care whose game it is .. just hope the Rockets hand the Sucks their second MAC loss in 2 seasons when that game comes around. Just wondering how you are planning on getting tickets? This isn't going to be like the BG/Wisconsin game. Tickets are going to be at a premium and hard to get unless you have ties to the UT program or have some serious ties to the OSU program.
  17. If Toledo clears an avg of $5/ticket after all expenses (busing, rent, security, etc), they would make around $290K for their 58K tickets, probably better than they would clear for a normal game at home. I'm sure the NCAA doesn't really care how they make their D1 season avg to stay D1 (other than frowning on give-aways and ghost fans). Not sure where you are getting those numbers. Busing isn't going to cost a lot. Do you think we are paying to bus everyone that buys a ticket or something? Also, we are going to sell tickets to students, faculty/staff, and season ticket holders first. So it is possible that the general public won't have many, if any, tickets left to buy. That is an incentive to the general public to become season ticket holders at UT, which helps UT even more.UNLV did a similar thing when they hosted Wisconsin a few years back. Wisconsin fans could not call the UNLV ticket office and buy tickets without becoming UNLV season ticket holders. Since season tickets for UNLV were not that bad considering the price Wisconsin fans are used to paying for Big Ten games, many Wisconsin fans bought UNLV season tickets which of course put extra money in the UNLV athletic department. As for the rent of CBS, it's not that bad at all. Something around $300,000. That includes staff and security. UT is going to make more money than you think.Toledo's been over the 15K average every year since the late 70's, so attendance isn't a problem at Toledo. We are always in the top 2 or 3 in the conference in attendance. We currently hold the record for the highest attended home game by a MAC school, in which we broke our own record. We are also the only MAC school to average over 30K for a season, and yes these were all games in the Glass Bowl.
  18. CBS seats 73K. OSU is being given an allotment of 15K. Toledo is being given an allotment of 58K. If tickets sell for just $50 (which is low for an OSU game), we are talking about 2.9 million in ticket revenue for Toledo. UT does have to pay for the rent of CBS, but that isn't a lot of money, and there is no guarantee to Ohio State.Toledo does receive a guarantee though for the return trip to Columbus the following season.
  19. Mike Roberts is transferring to Indiana State, not Indiana. As for Eric Haw, I hear he is headed to I-AA as well.
  20. Iowa State and Pittsburgh are going to be really tough games for Toledo. Kansas will be too, but it is at Toledo and the Rockets are 34-2 at home since mid-way through the 1999 season with a 3-0 record at home against Top 25 teams in that span.North Texas is not as good as Central Michigan. Ohio is still a question mark. Everyone expects them to be better because of Solich......I'm not buying it just yet.Your game against NC State could be a huge upset for the MAC as I expect you guys to pull off the win.
  21. The MAC website says that Akron gave up 339.8 which was 2nd in the MAC, to 316.8 for Toledo. However, looking at just conference games Akron was 1st at 319.6 and Toledo was 2nd at 326.9 ypg.I think the original question was for all games though, not just conference games. If it's not I apologize, but normally people look at all games played (including OOC) and then rank them with the other teams in their conference.
