Wouldn't it be something if the Akron Beacon Journal paid this much attention to their hometown NCAA D-1 school whether or not they made the NCAA Tourney? 🧐

The bar is set so low right now, it wouldn't take that big of an effort on the ABJ's part to get the coverage improved.

I definitely want to be in the top 3 next year.  The 4-5 MAC Tourney quarterfinal round is a tough road.  Though it did make it fun running the Buffalo-Toledo-KSUcks gauntlet.

Completely agree.  While it makes a nice run if you win, it's not a path you want every year.

  3. Not getting a lot of love from Jay Bilas.

Akron played Ohio State to a one-point game early this season and should have won. But the Zips are ranked outside of the top 100 in offensive and defensive efficiency, and that will not beat UCLA. Akron is ranked 321st in experience (1.2 years) in Division I. Ali Ali is the top scorer at 14.2 points per game, and Xavier Castaneda has hit 73 3s on 37.6% shooting. But John Groce's team is not quite ready to take down the Bruins.

He's got the frame and athleticism. Agree on adding weight and improving ball handling skills/decision making. I'd probably throw in that I'd like him to be more aggressive as well. He is prone to some unique decisions (which IMO mostly stems from indecisiveness). FWIW - I don't remember anyone talking about Preston prior to the year he left and I barely even remember Richaun Holmes at BG, but looking at stats, he really didn't even break out til his senior year.

Ali's size, athleticism, shooting efficiency, ability to create, and ability to hit LBJ-type turnaround fadeaway shots gives me the thought, but then again I thought Zeke was a near lock to have an NBA career so...

Ali's got the tools, but he would need to make some strides over the next year or two.

Whether he makes it or not, it's nice to be able to have the discussion.

  5. How many of us thought we'd be in this position after losing three straight games almost a month ago?  I'll admit that I didn't.  At the time, the team wasn't playing well and was struggling against the bottom teams in the conference.  It's amazing to see how this team has adapted and grown in less than a month.  And Groce...he's a magician in March.

Ironic, last time we won the tourney, we beat Kent and our center Zeke had a great game and was named tourney MVP and this year we beat Kent and it was our center, Freeman who was named MVP.

The last time we won the tourney it was over Ohio (2013).  The victory over Kent was 2011 - but still a good comparison.
