    GT Article with potential candidates-

    https://www.ohio.com/sports/20181203/university-of-akron-football-head-coaching-job-could-be-desirable-landing-spot-for-some

    Candidates referenced in article-

    • Luke Getsy: Offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach at Mississippi State.

    • Ryan Held: Running backs coach at Nebraska.

    • Mike Jacobs: Head coach at Notre Dame College.

    • Michael Johnson: Wide receivers coach at Oregon.

    • Vince Kehres. Head coach at Mount Union.

    • Brian Polian. Recruiting/special teams coordinator at Notre Dame.

    • Ed Warinner. Offensive line coach at Michigan.

I think we can now eliminate these as strong possibilities.  LOL.

George has certainly hurt their chances by, well let's face it, being George. But of the group I am intrigued by Getsy and Kehres. I like Getsy's progression up the ladder, his offenses and his history with us. As for Kehres I believe he knows how to win, no matter what the challenge. I also think he may be more about legacy than moving on to the next level and better pay. His dad repeatedly turned down better offers and showed by example that money isn't everything. I like guys who know how to win and make that expectation part of the team culture. Kehres also picks good assistants and manages them well as a staff. I do not believe TB did that well. At Mount they have 13 assistants. Many are volunteer coaches who receive little to no pay, but they are highly qualified ex-D1 or NFL coaches or NFL players who love being part of the game. He deserves an interview if he will take it.

So: is anyone going to be joining me in the stands here in Santa Barbara???

I was out running errands this morning wearing my Zips 2010 College Cup T-shirt when I a woman I walked past said "Go Zips!" I turned around and said "Yes, go Zips!" Turns out they (she was with her husband) were soccer fans in general, and knew that the Zips had beat Stanford yesterday. They'd been rooting for Stanford for the sake of the College Cup attendance; it's true that a Stanford appearance would have brought in many locals with Stanford connections, and travelers down from the Bay Area. So I hope Akron can get as many fans out here as possible!

I will be there with a former Zip from Charlotte and one from Phoenix. I understand ME_87 will also be in attendance. We need to have a pub for a pregame Zip rally. If the university doesn't set one up it will far on your shoulders being a local. We will be counting on you   :thumb:

  3. I would prefer a new football coach but the salary can't be cut if we are to get a good one. I realize you, like all of us, want to keep Jared for a long while. I believe we will. He could have gone to Ohio State earlier this year but he loves Akron. He is loyal and only asks for a fair salary and the autonomy to run a top 5 program. Williams, to his credit, has given him that and Jared likes working for LW.

  4. So proud of this team. They hung together and got the train rolling after the WVU loss. The coaching staff was fantastic proving coaching does matter and excuses are not an option. I wish someone would describe what the watch party was like and how attendance was. I'll bet ME87 and VA Zip are making plans for Santa Barbara. I really enjoyed watching the game with you two and the Nanchoffs at Wake. More so I enjoyed closing the bar at Wake with the coaches and former players. Hope to do it after wins in Santa Barbara.

    So proud!

Coach Bowden with a cameo at about the 1 minute mark

This is a much needed response to issues of mental health. My family has been affected by it and I bet yours has too. Football players are not immune to this disease. Get them all the help we can.

Solich explained afterward, including to TB, that the last score was to retain OU's total points leadership over Toledo...as a means to get a better bowl bid.

I don't have any problem with this at all. It's up to us to stop them from scoring. If we can't, we suffer the consequences.

  7. A change must be made. Anything that keeps the status quo is denying reality. The fan base has deserted this program and rightly so. I have always felt Summit county fans know good football. They don't settle for less. The attendance and sponsorship support speak volumes about what this knowledgeable community sees in our future under this leadership. Invoke the buyout and end the bleeding.

This may sound nuts it is it possible that Milwee is just Terry’s scapegoat, that it’s TB dictating plays and Milwee keeps his job to defect blame from TB?  Have I had one too many 3 Floyd’s Space Station Milddle Fingers on tap here?

Quite possibly. I admire your Thanksgiving Day prep, but Milwee has called a completely different game than Bowden beginning with the first year he took over play calling. And it has been consistently bad.

  9. As I watched the game it seemed to me coach Groce needs to address two things: 1) better shot selection on our 3's and, 2) better play out of the center. If we want to shoot 3's I don't have a problem if we don't force it and we get a good look at the basket. I thought Riak was going to be the answer for us in the paint, but today raised more questions than it answered. He looked lost at both ends. Poke is limited and Klac is still a work in progress. I hope Sayles responds to whatever coach Groce wants. He's looking like the post player with the best potential.

This team is going to be good yet this season. They just need time.

  10. This is no longer a Milwee issue. It is a Bowden issue. The talent level on this team is no longer an excuse. Injuries happen to every team. The coaching staff is incompetent on the offensive side and demotivated on the defensive side. There is obvious detachment from the coaches to the belief in TB's leadership. Time to clean house. I'd do it tomorrow and eat the last year(s) of TB's contract. Name an interim HC and put ourselves in the market for the best available coach we can get. Eating the contract is probably better financially than have 2-4,000 butts in the stands.

Sad it has come to this.:(

Who do you blame it on? The refs? The coaches are the ones who recruit the players. The coaches are the ones responsible for developing the players. The coaches are the ones who make the game plans. The coaches are the ones who call the plays. This isn't the NFL where coaches have to coach the roster their GM provides them. Bowden and Milwee hand picked every player they have on the offensive side of the ball.

Edit: Nobody here is asking for Akron to be Ohio State or Michigan. We expect to be able to compete against the top echelon teams of the MAC, which we haven't been able to do and we're in year 7. Any other FBS school would fire a coach that has only had 1 winning season in 7 years, yet somehow the fans asking for change are the irrational ones? I'm done with discussion. Enjoy your 9AM tee time with Bowden & Milwee because clearly you guys must be best buddies to not see some sort of change is needed.

Nobody is blaming'every single loss on coaching'. What objective fans are doing is looking at patterns over the past 7 seasons. Just because some think all fans are idiots doesn't mean its true. Some fans can actually watch ballgames and understand what is and is not happening. This is not personal for most folks. But after 7 seasons this program should not be losing its first two conference games. It should not be getting waxed by the NIU's MU's,UB's and EMU's. The offense should not be as pathetic as it has been. That is seen most markedly in the poor O-line play and lack of a running game. This is finally about being consistently competitive with the best programs in the MAC. Clearly this program is not.

Kreed and Lee, will you two stop being so logical! Why don't we just lower our aspirations/expectations and then our FB coaches will look like geniuses. They then will meet the challenge of winning 4-5 games a year. Please don't mention the performance of PJ Fleck at WMU, Campbell and Crandle at Toledo, Dino Babers at BG, Lance Liepold at UB or any host of NIU coaches. That's discrimination to expect Akron with the best MAC facilities, a hotbed for recruiting and an upper level MAC football budget to produce teams like those coaches did. That's expecting too much.

I say we give the staff cupcakes after every game and medals to take home. Meanwhile let's expect excellence out of MSoccer, M & W Track and Field, M BBall, W Swimming, W Tennis and Rifle. They want to compete w/o excuses.

When the Zips have any semblance of an offense, they can beat anyone in the MAC.

I expect, whether AR12 or KN1 is in the backfield, having 9 days to prepare allows the Zips offense to produce adequately enough to get the job done.

The Zips defense always shows up. Not worried about them.

Hope Boxen is healthy, and Bell's hammy is 9 days improved.

The Zips know this is a game they need for bowl eligibility. I think it goes down to the wire and EMU missed a game-winning field goal attempt as the final horn sounds.

    Zips 24 EMU 23

You are definitely a "glass half full" guy. I hope you are right. Go Zips!

Do you really think that they would tell you that any member of any coaching staff sucks and deserves to be fired?

You're damn right I do. When a coach goes 2-22 and you are sprouting that athletes are "flocking" to Akron I call bull---t. I can't respect anyone who can't admit the obvious, but turns around and asks alumni to give more and more money. Maybe athletes were "flocking" to Akron, and they were all bad athletes who no other DI program wanted. That is underlined by how bare TB found the cupboard.

Combined with the Gridiron disaster in Nebraska, Larry Williams and company no longer deserve their positions of employment.  From an event planning perspective, the MAC Soccer playoff should already have been arranged,  just in case.  If hosting two athletic teams playing simultaneously is such a logistical problem (I challenge whether it actually is) then do not schedule the BB opener on a potential Soccer playoff date.  Or schedule Soccer playoff on Monday.   Do something else.  Figure out a way to avoid making your fanbase(s) suffer.  Instead, UA AD failed to learn from past heartburn, and repeated same mistake from years ago.

My greater fear is that Larry Williams DID anticipate this scheduling conflict, and that this is his remedy.  He.  Just.  Does.  Not.  Care.    If that is the case, then I really do look forward to him moving on.   Now.  Tonight.  UA can do better.

I am not impressed with Williams, but feel I still need time to decide if he should go. I liked his hire of Groce, but contrast that with his hire of Jackson for WBB. I can't believe he didn't make a run at the Ashland WBB coach when Kest was tanking last season. His lack of publicly shaming Nebraska for not paying us is unbelievable. He should be fighting for us behind the scenes and also in the public. Play the David vs Goliath card because NU doesn't want to be seen on the national news as a cheap, abusive dept of athletics. Last night's issue with the lights and then Tuesday's lack of attention to our playoff bound MSoc is hard to fathom. A DII practice game (in essence) for MBB vs a step to a national championship for MSoc. How can you not focus on MSoc? I have my doubts too about George Van Horne and especially Anthony Henderson. He once tried to tell me Ianello was building a program recruits were flocking to. Go figure.

Whoever is in charge of Akron's Sports information department.....should also be on the hot seat.

season ticket holders were tweeting zipsmsoc begging for updates

Was the akron soccer SID at the JAR watching akron volleyball?

twitter is a great tool for providing updates every 5-10 minutes in unusual situations....

the sports information department was woeful last night

Akron has not had a good SID since Ken McDonald left decades ago. Our current SID is horrible.

  16. Good Doctor, I agree with you on your point regarding KD. I shared the frustration you spoke of, but looked to KD to find solutions. I felt he was fully capable of doing so. The football situation is very different. You, TB and most postors agree the offense needs fixed. So who can do that? It's the coaching staff. The responsibility is squarely on their shoulders. No member of ZNO is being disloyal by asking them to fix what needs fixed. Personally, I want TB to stay. I like the guy a lot. But first, and most important, I also want him to show that he can fix things.

To be clear, I made no mistake.  I’ve only missed two games this year (Buffalo and CMU); and yes, I see the quality of the players being recruited.  Look, there is always room for improvement; but I think we have a good group to continue to build upon.  I would venture a guess that there is not one player or coach that wakes up on game day and says “I think I’ll only give 50% today”.  I know the results are not always what we want or expect; but sometimes we have to be adults and understand, this football thing is hard, winning ain’t easy.  Calling Kato stupid was clearly out of line; it was immature and irresponsible.  From what I’ve observed he is competitive and has a true passion for the game.  Perhaps we are in different places in our lives; but I’m a Zips Fan because my son chooses to play the game.  Because my son chooses to play the game; I chose to be a fan win, lose or draw.  Just my opinion, from one ZIPS fan to another.  Go ZIPS???

Thank you for your fandom. Thank you for your support. I'll stick by calling Kato stupid because he forced the refs to call an unsportsmanlike penalty on him by going to the other teams bench, which is never, ever allowed. We were going to get a 15 yard penalty on their stupid LB who ran off with Kato's shoe. Be mature, let the refs handle it. They saw it. We get the 15 yards and a first down. Kato is supposed to manage the game, not emotionally let the game manage him. I expect us to play good football. If we do the W's will take care of themselves. When we don't I'll say so. To me it starts with the coaching staff. They are there to solve it especially when we are playing worse than when we started the season.

I wish you well and hope your son stays healthy and achieves all his dreams at Akron. I also played for the Zips. Go Zips.

If changes were made; you would just find something else to whine about.

You mistake whining for asking for a better product. Do you go to the games? Have you seen the quality of players we are recruiting and how they are being misused? PJ Fleck was 1-11 his first year at WMU. By his third year he had them in a major bowl. Coaching matters and coaching has to be held accountable. Do you really think we should rejoice when we beat a Northwestern and then lose to a poor Miami? We struggle against inferior Kent and CMU while being destroyed by Buffalo. After 7 years I expect better. Let's stop making excuses for poor performance. If Lance Leipold (sp ?) at Buffalo can build a juggernaut in three years we can do it at Akron in seven with better facilities, recruiting base and support. It's not whining to expect quality in a program.
