  1. Until this data is updated for next years' incoming freshman class, we can't judge the effectiveness of the new admissions standards.

The Plain Dealer reported some preliminary enrollment data for Northeast Ohio schools.

University of Akron – Confirmations to enroll are up 10 percent over last year so officials are optimistic they can bounce back from a freshman class of 3,984 last year, a 5.9 percent decline from 2012.

As the university becomes more selective it steers several hundred students to community colleges.

About 540 students have confirmed admission to its honors college, compared to 376 who enrolled last year.

It will be interesting to see how the new admissions standards affect the quality of this years incoming class.

  2. What would be so bad about a medical school at UA? Medical education is in a state of flux right now because the system of memorization is ~100 years old and is no longer adequate. UA's curriculum could be innovative and modern, and research associated with a medical school would spur new technology that produces jobs. Also, a city the size of Akron with the quality hospitals Akron has should feature a medical school. One thing that immediately stood out to me about Dr. Scarborough's background is that it would enable him to pursue a medical school for UA.

    Twas a joke, good sir.

I'm teasing Zach for saying stupid shit.

  3. From Dave's second article:

Best contends that his model of online education benefits everyone. The schools win because enrollment spikes, bringing in more state funding—often as much as for students attending class on campus, even though online students cost less to educate. Students win because they can earn higher salaries with their degrees, which are cheaper and more convenient to earn online. “Partner” corporations such as hospitals and school districts often subsidize or cover their employees’ tuition and benefit from a better-educated workforce. Look at it this way, and it’s hard to see who loses.

Looks like UA figured out how to fill that budget gap.

  4. Those new stadiums spurred the growth of DT Cleveland to a point where they are now struggling to keep up with DT housing needs. DT Cleveland boasts a 95%+ occupancy rate for apartments with more coming online all the time.

There was a lot more that went into downtown Cleveland's revival but yes, the arenas had a lot to do with it.

As a self interested zips fan living out of state, I fully support the new tax. :P

  5. Always interesting to peak in on BobcatAttack.

Whenever feel shitty about the level of discussion on ZN I go to BobcatAttack. It makes me feel better.

"Akron is a terrible team with no talent and a little bit of luck" (per one OU fan)

One wonders if that particular OU fan considered what that statement implies about OU. But because he went to OU, we can probably assume he hasn't thought that far ahead.

  6. We have included a realistic number for student attendance in the "countdown" you've seen on BackTheZips.com. We also used a "capacity" of 5,500 for that countdown. As a point of reference, the number we are aiming for is 4,059, the largest announced attendance prior to New Year's in Coach D's tenure. That is the announced attendance of the game vs. Dayton back on Dec. 6, 2008. The largest home opener in Dambrot's tenure was in 2005 vs. YSU (announced: 3,886). I'm confident we'll surpass that number, but we could sure use your help encouraging friends, family, neighbors, and strangers to attend!

    Thanks for the info!

  7. Per backthezips.com, 1881 seats remain. Wonder if they include a student estimate in there. If not, might be close to a sellout

Good question. Hopefully someone in the know can come through for us..

Many people I know that aren't regular attendees or are only "big game" attendees seem excited and are planning on going to the game.

This is the most excitement that I can remember leading up to a MBB home opener. That's especially impressive when you consider the fact that we're playing a team that almost no one in Northeast Ohio cares about(not to say that Coastal will be an easy win).
