  1. Just found out there was a shooting at the Plasma Center tonight. Awful news is all I can say, tear down that dang place please someone...seriously it's not even safe

Seconded. It would go a long way towards revitalizing that area. I can't believe the University is allowing that structure to sit there and rot directly across the street from the brand new stadium. Just another reason many students head to Highland Square/The Valley to live.

  2. If a new arena isn't possible within the next 5 years then they need to reorganize the student section. If you can't get rid of the track behind the current "student section"(the metal bleachers) then give those lower seatbacks to students. They rarely sell out and it's the quietest part of the arena anyways. Does anyone else find it pecular that we get 50 students to a game when there is thousands within walking distance...hmm...

  3. It does not matter where you sit. I remember STANDING in Memorial Hall to watch my Zips.

The students have to come to the games. Until you can fill the JAR each and every game, you will not get top level recruits.

I agree 100%. The AD is trying. He sent an e-mail out to every single student with a picture of crowd at the Akron/Can't game. He actually asked if there is any way of improving the student experience so that more kids come out for the game. They are trying.

IMO, get rid of the damn track behind the student section and you'd see student attendance double.

  4. Crap, VCU is now in the CBI...and I thought we had a chance to win this thing.

Damn..I hope you're wrong. VCU would own this competition. How the hell didn't they get into the NIT? They would whoop some K-ent behind.

  5. SO WHAT IS THE EXCUSE NOW?

There isn't one. At least not a good one. But if I could think of anything this might be it.

But I offer another reason, one that can only be changed if the decision makers at the university choose to rectify it.

That is, there is far too little excitement generated in the stands to make it a must-do, habitual experience. If the basketball is good, hoo-rah. But if the overall pleasuring of the senses is missing, the blahs give way to ennui.

Much of this — and I can't emphasize that notion without using a hundred exclamation points — is that the student sections are far too limited.

On the floor, there are 90 seat-back chairs available in the north stands and 86 in the south stands. (That's not an estimate, I can count to 176.) They are reserved for the AK Rowdies, a band of avid and special supporters who live up to their name with an acknowledged fervor.

But the rest of the students are scattered throughout the arena, and that lessens the idea that there is strength in numbers.

So, there are 176 allotted spots in prime cheering areas in a facility that can hold almost 6,000.

    Huh?

  6. Now the old guy has to speak his mind!

I would LOVE to see Akron get national recognition. But you must remember who we are and where we are from. OK, I know I am almost 40 years behind the times. But still, when we compete for players, remember what we don't have:

    1. A nationally know name, like an Ivy League school or OSU

    2. A history of winning/national championship football and basketball programs

    3. A huge and fulfilling on campus life for out of town students. And let me make this clear, some of the big time schools have THOUSANDS of students living on campus. When I attended UA were were DIV II and had FOUR DORMS, three small ones for women and one tower for men. OK, there is more today, but the school is still, I am certain, dominated by TOWNIES. A townie school is NOT going to attract top recruits from all over the country. Because most of the commuter students attend classes and leave to go home or to their jobs. Big time schools have their community life ON CAMPUS, not like UA, where so much of the "community" is the same High School friends.

    4. FANS ATTENDING GAMES. Back in the DIV II days of Memorial Hall we packed in over 5000 for big games. Now they seem lucky to get 1/2 that in the JAR, for a team that has won 20 games+ four years in a row. Again, this is because most of the student body goes home after class.

Dambrot has done a GREAT JOB. Best coach Akron has ever had. You want a better team, build a better community!

I'm going to agree with you on almost every single one of your points EXCEPT #3. I think I'm almost offended by that one(especially being from out of town).

I think you drastically underestimate how much Akron has changed. Do you realize that over 4,000 kids live on campus? That's larger than a LOT of division one schools. Even some smaller BCS schools. If you add everyone who lives off campus you're looking at another few thousand students. You do realize that's larger than a few entire schools, right? Almost 30,000 people go to Akron. Name one school that has 30,000 spots for residents. Not gonna happen.

Where I will agree is that UA needs to work on the community aspect. We can still grow the on campus community and improve the area around campus. It's happening as we speak. Now if the U would just stop these slum lords around campus(as others have mentioned before) and quit being so strict with parties, things would go a lot smoother. Akron cops ruin any kind of night life that could be possible around campus. It needs to stop. And the university has to help us out or this 'University Park" community will never flourish the way they want it to.

Its time to get to the next level, I don't feel Dambrot is that guy. Luckily we have an AD that is not tied to this guy in any way. Akron is never going to get to the next level with Dambrot. He is scared to play real teams and he doesn't recruit good enough.

If Akron fired a 24 win coach we would be the laughing stock of division one basketball. Get a freaking clue, man.

  7. The last thing on the list KD is going to do is beef up the schedule. Beefing up the schedule could shatter the 20 win illusion. My guess is bringing in better talent is what he is going to do. Better talent could take the team from 24 wins to 26 against the horrible schedule they play. The illusion is reinforced at that point. Then we can hear the growers say, "See, we won more this year than last year. The process works and the team is growing."This year was a big year for the "growers" and there is nothing to reinforce their beliefs at this point. UofA played an abnormally large number of OOC games at home and will not be so blessed next year. They had, with the exception of one player and the addition of a HS All American, the same team coming back. It would have been one thing to lose to Can't last night, but getting beat by OU is nonsense. The talent has to increase if they are going to play more road OOC games and maintain the same number of wins.
I think it might a combo of both scheduling and players. Maybe a small schedule upgrade and an increase in talent at certain positions. Specifically at point guard. I know Dambrot likes the short tough guys like Humpty, but we had no match for Armon Bassett last night. Can't's guards gave us problems as well. Humpty is going to be great, but he can't do it alone. Mcnees is a shooter. I don't trust him driving to the lane. Bottom line, we need someone with size and athleticism like that Bassett or Cooper at Ohio. They are going to be good the next few years. We have the size and athleticism down low. Now we need a "go-to" athlete at the point.
  8. I understand you are upset about tonight but i was just agreeing with another poster on one point (the deleted topic that did occur) and disagreeing on another (he said Dambrot lost the game for us). You are the one being juvenile trying to call me out on a supposed "juvenile ranting" when all i did was ask why you deleted a post i made where i stated that you should not have deleted a few posts instead of just deleting an entire thread. Of course you deleted the posts that were defending the national guard during the Can't state shootings and my mention that a family member of mine was present at it but not the posts claiming that Zips fans were bringing up May 4th as a joke.Though Zipsnation is great, you continually give it a bad name with your unneeded censorship of a supposed "open forum". I didn't know this was your own private club where people's opinions are suppressed when they do not agree with you.
RootforRoo, I'd give it a break man. You've been here long enough to realize how this is run. You will never have a say--you are still and student AND you weren't college buds with any of the mods on here. I love ZNO but I totally see where you're coming from. It's best to just let it slide. At least we have alumni who are involved enough to host their own forum unlike a certain portage county "university"!
  9. I thought that entire game was as evenly played. The teams were even, the bands were even(Ohio's band is overrated in my opinion). The crowd was about 50/50 Ohio/Akron. Fair enough. There's tons of Ohio alumni in the Cleveland area. But for almost the entire game all that you could hear was Ohio fans. We were amazed at how quiet the Rowdies were. Frankly, it was embarrassing(Trust me, I was doing my fair share of yelling). And what about our alumni? You guys just sat in your seat. ESPN 2. National T.V. Can we get a little louder? I think our alumni attendance was pretty pitiful when you think about how many Akron alumni live in the greater Cleveland area. Is the issue our Alumni Association? What does it take to get some alumni together and make some noise? If the Alumni Association sucks, then I think the AK-Oldies need to step it up and start doing what the actual alumni groups are too unorganized to do. Bottom line...Akron fans could learn a lot from Ohio fans. Kudos to them. In terms of numbers, it wasn't bad. But in terms of noise...we have a long way to go.

  10. I had the distinct pleasure of running into Steve McNees at a concession window at the Q after the Can't game, and got to shake the hand that fired The Shot. All I could keep saying to Steve and Nik and Nitro, who were all standing there smiling, was, "I love watching you guys play. I love watching you guys play." Nik said with a big smile, "Be here tomorrow night."
i watched that video about 30 times. i love the sound of the net when the ball goes through. bout time something like that happens to us
Can we start referring to it as "The Shot"? Seriously. Thanks for the video Akronnn!
  11. Maybe I missed some earlier discussion, but it looks like Western Michigan is putting together a pretty decent start to their season. Their win over the College of Charleston on a neutral court looks much more impressive with CofC's win over UNC. They've played a pretty tough schedule and have managed to come away with a winning record. Mr. Kool (who seems like he's been there forever) may have something to say in Cleveland come tournament time.
I've been waiting for someone to mention this. Judging from their schedule so far, WMU will be tough. I might mention that they beat VCU decisively. The same VCU squad that beat URI by 2.
  12. If you delete 'Bobcat Attack' it's impossible to tell which team/fanbase in ohio you are talking about.
Not true. Check out some of the threads on there. They are far and away the most delusional of the MAC fans. I think Akron may be second, though. And that NEcatNEtime guy is probably jupitertoo.
  13. And that's when you're paying. I'm a cheapskate, and even I can't get anywhere! The gamecast or whatever they call this program is almost worthless, unless you have a high-speed modem/connection. WIth dial-up it takes me about 1/2 hr for the thing to load. Then when it comes on, it doesn't even refresh -- you have to manually refresh the buggah. In the end, I pull out my cellphone and can get a better stats and play-by-play presentation than the U gives on the wide screen. Now something's wrong here.
You have dial up internet but access to the internet on your cell? You got your priorities outta wack, bruddah!
  14. Can anyone confirm that the recruit at tonights Valpo game was 2011 PF Jakar Sampson from StVM? It looked a little like him, and the team colors he had on certainly matched. If so, it would be a really good sign for the Zips if he is indeed intrested. He has some high major offers and is highly touted by all 3 major recruiting services (ESPN, Scout and Rivals).
Someone please confirm this. This would be HUGE!
  15. I know it's winter break from school, but it looks like those pictures show about 10 students behind the basket. Very disappointing as well.
Sorry, but I'm not about to drive over an hour to watch a UNC branch campus get stomped. I'm sure that was the mindset of most students. Also, if we arent going to get a new arena, can we at least get rid of that stupid track? I guarantee more students would sit with the Rowdies if it weren't on little portable bleachers. I'm probably in the minority on here, but not all of us are best buds with the rest of the AK-Rowdies. I guess I'm saying that the casual student is being scared away by the JAR's poor design. Who ever designed the JAR should be shot.
