Our moving to C-USA makes more sense than appears at first. The TV revenue for C-USA is enough to cover any increase in cost. In 2008 C-USA distributed to each member $1.4 million in TV money. That same year the MAC distributed to each member $0. It is also reasonable to think we will draw more more at the gate for C-USA members than what the MAC offers. Let's face it, the local fan is not going to come out for MAC teams. Only Can't draws. All other opponents don't draw or bring a following. Even when you consider minor sports the increased revenue from TV outweighs any increase in travel costs.
But will the TV revenue be there if Houston, Eastern Carolina, Memphis, and Central Florida leave for greener pastures?
I still wonder about the travel costs. Even in the East Division here's the three closest opponents:
Marshall-4 hours
ECU-9 hours
Memphis-11 hours
If CUSA leftovers and the more "motivated" MAC programs(Akron, Toledo, Buffalo, Ohio) ever get together and form something in the future, then it's doable. One of the MAC's strengths is that we(currently) don't have to play teams that say, 'yall'. It's much cheaper that way.

On a lighter note...

Along the way, UA's enrollment has climbed, with this fall's figure estimated at more than 29,000 — 6 percent more than the previous year. As enrollment has grown, so has the demand for on-campus housing. -
Doug Martin is such a goofball.

Ahahahahahaha, it appears he's gone "Ron Artest" on them. Hey coach can I get some time off to promote my album? Please let this be true, just for the jokes.
This is too good to be true. -
EJ Thomas Hall is an incredible waste of money. Dump the high-brow crap completely and start bringing in weekly shows for the students.
What? You mean students won't pay to watch Oliver!?
How about Black Violin? At least they don't beat around the bush...

To our way of thinking, a good college is one that meets student needs. While other college rankings are based in large part on school reputation as evaluated by college administrators, we focus on factors that directly concern incoming students: Will my courses be interesting? Is it likely I will graduate in four years? Will I incur a ton of debt getting my degree? And once I get out of school, will I get a good job? This is a refreshing dose of reality compared to Princeton Review. The top 20 consisted of more than the ivies and the nerdy nine. Not to mention, being the flagship university in your state didn't automatically put you in the top 50.
Whether they're in the top 10 or near the end of the list, all 610 schools in this ranking count among the best in the country: We review just 9% of the 6,600 accredited postsecondary institutions in the U.S., so appearing on our list at all is an indication that a school meets a high standard.Right...I suppose...

Bottom line. If this team start winning consistently people will show up.
Not saying we would sell out the Info, but I ccould see over 20,000 per game easily.
Win and they will come.
Bingo. I feel like making that my signature. I'm sick of saying it.

Especially since the idea came at the hands of Akron's home town NFL team.
BTW, one of the top 5 games I have attended in my life.
Haha, I never said the bobkittens were original.
And by the way, that video is proof that there is still a rivalry(no matter how many Steelers fans deny it).

I'd like to see something with this sort of quality if Akron ever starts winning. I don't know who Ohio's play-by-play guy is, but Frenchie makes this guy look like a square.

How cool would it be to have the HD footage of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kypnW0FaYY
So is this possible at Akron? Just once or twice per season?
-
I'm not sure if this has been posted yet. I found it buried beneath an article about Toledo's home game against the U.
This season, the Zips will be league favorites again. New sod and grandstands are being installed at Lee Jackson Field, and the Zips already report 90 percent of the new chair-back seats and 60 percent of the reserve seats in the new bleachers have been sold to season ticket holders.http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/in...ize_home-a.html

The Grant Street residences is almost 40 years old and needs major upgrades which would be too costly to pursue.
The plan is to raze Gallucci, the Grant Street residences and the townhomes and move Greenleaf (the family services agency currently fronting on Exchange). The entire block and the Gallucci site will be transformed. This will occur starting in 2011 and be complete (at least scheduled to be) by 2015. South of that will be the new private development, Envision Apartments, currently under major renovation which will add another 300 beds to the mix starting in January, 2011.
The wonderful thing for the university is that they will have little or no cash outlay--just a land lease, in essence to the developers who will finance the entire project. Win-win for everyone!!
Thanks, that's some awesome information. Glad to hear it.
WOW, that will be impressive if the grand master plan comes to fruition. I also noticed that quite a few homes have been demolished near Summa on the East side of campus between Market and Buchtel. My guess there is that Summa will be expanding across Market street. The two big players in the University park Alliance are making things happen around campus. It's going to be interesting to see how this city changes over the next 10-20 years. It's pretty likely that there will be something similar to what's going on at University circle in Cleveland. As young people continue to move back to the city, University Park might become a new hotspot.

Sorry I can't take this thread seriously until Zach is an option.
But given those choices I'll vote for Dr. Z during football season and Quickzips for basketball. Personally, I don't contribute much to these forums, but I always appreciate their insight and opinions on each sport.

The University of Akron may build another residence hall with 735 beds — and eventually up to 2,500 — through a partnership with a private developer........In the future, UA may make more use of it as well. UA President Luis Proenza said in his state-of-the-university address last fall that private dollars could fund at least three new academic research buildings, at least three residence halls and two or more parking decks...
...Currently the university has 3,365 beds on campus, including the 450-bed Spicer Street residence hall that will open later this month...
Does anyone know if some of the older residence halls(Gallucci, Grant) will be replaced or is this just purely new construction. Either way, this is a pretty substantial increase in residence space.

One really has to wonder how significant this is to MAC teams. I mean, how many casual fans could even point out Ball State on a map? This might have been decided by one or two alumni from a certain school who live in a specific region.
Honestly, I don't see this changing until the football team begins winning. I'm patient because I'm a younger fan than some of you. I feel sorry for those of you who have had to sit through crappy football games for decades. Let's hope Wistricill can fix this.

I walked through the JAR today. Every inch of the place is covered in LJ23 logos (how will that work when he switches to #6, I wonder?). There are huge banners of him hanging from the rafters. The U did not take these things down after the announcement like Cleveland did with the gigantic poster downtown (they might ahve taken it down as a safety thing, people throwing things at it and attempting to set it on fire), and I even saw some coaches taking some out-of-town women's sports recruits on a tour of it.
I think it would be unwise to completely renounce our connection to LeBron in a fit of childish rage. I do think we should keep it subdued for a while until we see how things play out. If he ignores us and starts giving all his support to FIU or USF or some other school or if he continues to insult the area well into the future, we quietly break our ties and move on. But if he keeps sending good things our way, we reap the benefit of it and wait until things calm down in a few years before again displaying our connection proudly.
And if you don't think the camps in the JAR benefit Akron because we don't directly get those recruits, then you have no idea how recruiting works. It's all about connections and networking, and this gives Dambrot the opportunity to talk to top recruiters and coaches from across the country and get a read on things and maybe a tip on a solid prospect or two that might not have been on our regional radar. I'm pretty certain that's how he heard about Alex Abreu.
That's a great post, Zach. I think you pretty much nailed it. And as Quickzips said, it's probably best to let this simmer a little while before any decisions are made.
To the hardcore Akronites: you guys are some troopers. I'm not from Akron, but I can imagine how annoying it is playing second fiddle to Cleveland. In the end, I suppose the one thing Akron will always have over Cleveland is a powerful public university. CWRU is a very prestigious school but UA can do much more for the Akron community due in part to it's size and (of course) division 1 athletics.

How much time did it take you to post this thread showing just how peeved you are at your rivals for accomplishing something you don't give a %#@* about?

About 15 minutes.
Kind of reminds me of soccer haters going on ESPN's World Cup site, and declaring, "that isn't a sport, cause they don't score enough. And they have TIES! TIES!" I guess since it bothers people enough to write, they must care after all. Frankly a simple
would have sufficed. Can we get a SOCCER SUCKS sign for ITZ & Co.?
Z.I.P-- Don't forget the complimentary cheap beer, armchair, and "World's Greatest Dad" t-shirt wrapped tightly around their beer gut. Oh, hey, did you hear? Glenn Beck says them durn soccer-playin furriners are takin our jobs with their soccer playing!

As I'm sure you all know by now(the national news media has been all over it) Can't has been raking in the trophies this summer. From the illustrious "Excellence in Management Cup" to the 2009-2010 NCAA P.A. Announcer of the Year. And who could forget the 2009-2010 Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. Due to the surplus of trophies being shipped to Portage county, word has it that Can't's new AD has decided to simply make one trophy to represent all of the accomplishments of the athletics department. It will be dubbed the "No one gives a s***" award.
The new trophy will not only symbolize the meaningless awards that Can't's been (golden)showered with, but will also give their football team a chance at contributing something. Because let's face it, when you are selling season tickets for $30 it's fairly obvious that indeed no one gives a s***.
For further entertainment, feel free to visit their pathetic excuse for a fan forum. There you can find insider information posted at least once a month when a Can't fan's mother allows him to ride his bicycle to the Portage county library. Among the 10 members, there is on devout fan who claims to have sat down and had breakfast with former Can't State AD Laing Kennedy multiple times. Be sure to ask him about it. If you're lucky he might also tell you about the time he sat down and had a chat with Lebron about his free agency.
Cheers,

Can someone please make it stop.....?
Try living in NEO right now. The Cleveland media won't shut up. With the exception of Brad Sellers these guys are driving me insane.
P.S. Some guy at a bar in Lakewood was holding a sign that read "Take Akron with you".

I've always wondered why there was never a Chipotle grill somewhere on exchange. That place would make a killing.
And while we're on the subject, what's up with the lack of local restaurant's around campus? I don't have a problem with the chain stuff but if the U ever wants to get serious about this whole "University Park" branding campaign they need to bring in something local. You know you're in trouble when one of your neighborhood 'staples' is the Country Diner.
I was thinking something like this...
-
That's just me.
Dave, you could have prefaced your entire post with that statement.
Now, on the more important subject of food, Green is not loaded with restaurants. I'm not familiar with any Mexican restaurants on Canton Road. The Bistro (formerly Bobby's Bistro) is still the best restaurant in the immediate Green area. But there are many good restaurants within 15 miles of Green, and short drives are no problem for me.Give credit where credit is due. Green is quite the cultural mecca. During my time in Akron I've found Mariachi Loco(a local chain Mexican restaurant) to quench my thirst for international flare. And if that isn't enough, there's an Applebee's AND a Friday's right down the road.
Green, the cultural crossroads of Summit County.

I think with all the investment that is going on, that in ten years CSU will be looking pretty good.
I agree, but they won't be able to match what other urban schools have become/are becoming. Akron/Toledo/Ohio State/UC have room for thousands of students to live on campus(Ohio State obviously has a lot more being the largest university in the country..). Meanwhile Cleveland State has rooms for a few hundreds of students, not thousands.
Once again, I agree. CSU is on an upswing, but they won't be able to match the atmosphere that other urban Ohio schools have growing.

The sports singing tradition that I despise most is when Boston fans sing Sweet Caroline in the middle of the 8th at every home game.

I can't stand that stupid accent. I'd kill myself if I had to listen to 40,000 of them at once.

There seems to be something missing...
No kidding. At least they remembered Temple...
