I hope that recruits do not come here see us butchering their names and want to leave. This is the second time we have mispelled this kids name. It is Josh Egner, for god sakes. Not John, not Enger. Save your money and stay as far away from this game as possible, our luck you will go up to a 5'7'' African American kid, call him John Enger and Josh will hear you.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "majority lead," but the play-by-play of the Zips-Zags game (link below) shows that the Zips were never more than 4 points behind until 8:15 was left in the game. The Zips led the Zags from 6:40 remaining in the first half to 13:15 remaining in the second half, or 13:25, and a couple of times after that, as well.In the 10 minutes between 16:54 remaining in the first half and 6:40 remaining in the first half, the Zips pulled ahead of the Zags 6 different times.Only in the last 9 minutes of the game did the Zags clearly outplay the Zips. For the other 31 minutes, the Zips were either leading, tied, or within 4 points.Zips-Zags Play-By-PlaySo in all of those stats do you see a major lead for Akron. I do not. A lead by 4 points is clearly not insurmountable. You can tell yourself whatever you like but gonzaga was never in clear danger of losing that game. Gonzaga played almost everyone on their bench while Akron was in their normal rotation the whole game. As it looked to me was that Mark Few was conserving as much as he could knowing that Gonzaga was going to play more games. Keep thinking that Akron is at Gonzaga's level, and that is why Akron is laughed at outside this ring of nonsense.Dave and I were actually at the Rose Garden that afternoon for the Gonzaga game. Standing in line at the concession stand during halftime, I assure you that the Zags fans were quite worried about the outcome of the game. No one was laughing at the Zips. Well me, my dad, and Andy were there, and Mark Few was not worried. Tell Dave that for me. So you saw Mark few laughing at the Zips? Why do you feel it's neccesary to tear down the Basketball program? I'm sorry that the new AD fired your best buddy on the football team, get over it. I have no idea what you are talking about? Do you know what you are talking about?

Id like to see gonzaga on the schedule............ so we can get a lil payback. What are you talking about? I feel the idea is to play teams that we have the chance of beating and bolstering our schedule. We are not at Gonzaga's level. This year we are not even at Rhode Islands level. Gonzaga would not even take the call from Akron if we tried to schedule them. Gonzaga is looking to play schools in the NW for recruiting purposes, or top 20 schools to keep their RPI high because of their weak league. Lets get out of Fantasy LandGotta disagree here. If the goal, as you state it, is to play teams that we have the chance of beating and bolstering our schedule, then Gonzaga and Rhode Island are exactly the teams we should be scheduling. We have shown over the last year that we can play nose to nose with each of those teams. If we stop crapping down our legs when the pressure is on then we do have a chance at beating those teams, and they are certainly schedule boosters. Now if you argument is that we should play teams that we are assured of beating, then no, don't schedule the Gonzagas and the Rhode Islands. Now whether or not Gonzaga would actually schedule us, that is a different question all together. I agree there, that we probably aren't all that exciting an option for them.I am going to say that if we played Gonzaga 10 times we might be able to win 2. The key word is might.... I feel Rhode Island is the correct schedule, Gonzaga is above and beyond Akron. They beat us by 13 last year and I felt is was not that close. Akron never held a majority lead in the game and could not compete with Gonzaga's length. We need to schedule A10 teams like UMass, St. Joes... Mo Valley teams like Witch St, Evansville... these teams are names that the Basketball community knows and hold a good chance for Akron to come out victors. Gonzaga, as much as we wish we were like them, or on their level, we are way behind them in level of play, and in the Tournament Selectors eyes.

He is avg 8.7 pts a game in those 16 and we are going to call him Superman. Could be confidence, could be gas, lets hold off on the nicknames till he proves himself in big games.

Lets see under the General Thunder Dan Hipsher in 97-98 the Zips avg 3600 fans. That was the year that they won the MAC East with teams such as Marshall w/ Tamar Slay, Ball St w/ Bonzi Wells, OU w/ Brandon Hunter, a good Can't Team. In the year of our Lord and Savior Keith Dambrot, they avg only 3200 fans. I think we can all agree Dandy Dan was doing something right. And I am starting a petition right here to get him reinstated as Head Mens Basketball Coach at Thee Akron University.Petition1. Rugby (digital signature)2.3.4.5.6.7.

I don't know...We got two guys (Hixon and Blackburn) who got Super Bowl rings and STARTED for the Super Bowl Champs the following year.Hard to beat that at Akron. The Steelers had 3 MAC players win a ring with them, Harrison, Batch, and Leftwich. One of those being the Defensive player of the year, Now thats hard to beat. How do you leave Ben off your list?I forgot 4 players, pretty impressive.

I would like to nominate Dan Hipsher for all the gifts he has bestowed upon the zipsnation. I would also like to nominate George Van Horne, and his blazing fastball. I would like to put up Mike Bobinski, as AD. Also I would like to throw Marylu Gribchaw's name in the ring for compliance. These would all be great nominees for the all decade team.
-
Why were all those great players on the other MAC teams and not Akron? We were really outrecruited during the Hipsher years, apparently.Well I guess one remedy is to have a 230 rank strength of schedule like Akron has this year. I heard that KD was looking to get Devry, and The University of Phoenix on the schedule. I believe Akron had 5, 1000 point scorers on that team in the late 90's. to win 17,18,17 vs the talent listed was commendable, seeing Akron had no NBA talent. And I’m sure if Ball, Bosley, Andrick, Phillips, Hipsher, or any of the guys from that team were seen sitting in the stands at a game you all would run over and get in line to sniff their jocks. Akron is the quintessential building program, they will have good years and then bad years. But they will never be on the Level as Xavier, Gonzaga, Butler or whatever mid major team you can think of with a name.
-
So you are going to try to compare this years team, or last years team to Ball, Bosley, Phillips, Andrick, Moore, Gooden. Do not think it would even be close. Might as well name it after Owens, JD did not worl out as all you thought he would a couple years ago. Whose to say that KD will not have the same fate. I have sat in the stands in the same shirt for 20 yrs now. The team mentioned above is better than anything KD has brought in, they played better competition.

Yup, you aren't close to the Hipshers at all.I am so close I am Dan's shadow. Dan Hipsher paved the road that the Zips are traveling down now. He gave the Zips the credability that they carry now. Thank You Dan where ever you are right now. Rumor is that he might come back and coach the Football team to a MAC East Title. Are yout a gumshoe Quick? Conf. Conf. Year Coach Record Pct. Maybe you have Dan Hipsher confused with Bob Huggins or Keith Dambrot when talking about coaches that have actually given Zips Basketball any sort of credibility in the Division I era? Or maybe you're just in love with Dan Hipsher? Either one is fine with me, but it's obvious that Dan Hipsher doesn't hold a candle to the things that Huggins and Dambrot have done for Akron Basketball. The numbers speak for themselves.Dambrot is the beneficiary of a weak MAC, when Hipsher was there every team seemed to have NBA talent. Now it seems as if Toledo, Cent Mich, Eastern, Can't, BGSU, are all teams that are struggling to compete in the MAC. Name me 5 players to play in NBA since Dambrot came to Akron and Hipsher left Akron. While Hipsher was there Casey Shaw Toledo, Chris Kaman Cent Mich, David Webber Cent Mich, Keith Mcleoud BGSU, Shawn Stonerook Ohio, Brandon Hunter Ohio, Wally Szerbiak Miami, Derrick Dials Eastern Mich, Anthony Stacey BGSU, Trevor Huffman Can't, Antonio Gates Can't State, Earl Boykins East Mich, Antonio Daniels BGSU, John Edwards Can't State, Ira Newbel Miami, Tamar Slay Marshall, Bonzi Wells Ball St, Theron Smith Ball St.. Seems to me Hipsher was coaching aginst way better talent. I realize some are not in NBA but all played on an NBA summer team in the last 4 years.

If i recall didnt Hipsher get akron their 1st banner in the MAC East? Also, didnt he have the insight to hire Dambrot, and allow that little hair ball to weasel his way into the head coaching spot. I am Thunder Dan........Sike for all you 90's fans.
-
Thankyou for your opinion Mrs. Hipsher.I would be willing to bet you are a woman who laughs at her own jokes.
-
Hipsher did a lot for the program, he brought in recruits like Scott Hample, Ruben Conway, Johnny Carson (RIP), Bruce Wienkien, Klaus Zollner and Ali Kart. He had a superb staff that included John Pigatti, who if you remember introduced himself to the commissioner of the MAC in a most interesting way at the MAC tourney. There are so many things this man can be remembered for. A gymnasium in his name is the least we can do for him.
-
Does anyone know any info on this. I over heard some alumni talking about it in the Tommy Evans Lounge. Is it going to be called Hipsher Hall, just what was being said. For all Dan did for the program. Any info would be appreciated.

Zach, you have major hops. Dunk it hard, shoot for 3. I'll be watching.

How can you even compare Gonzaga to Akron. That is like comparing apples to apple sauce. Gonzaga is constantly in the top 20 year in and year out. They have a name that recruits will play for, They go to Maui just about every other year which is a huge recruiting tool. Numerous NBA players. What has Akron done? I love Akron, but we need to start being a little more realistic here. This is not fantasy land, no matter how much we want it to be. If Gonzaga supporters read this stuff they probably would not respond, because it is like the nerdy kid in school who has a patch on one eye of his glasses, who eats his boogers saying that he is going to beat up the football captain. Its a pipe dream.

Zeke is Trying to Adjust to College Basketball
deacon33 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
What are you smoking, So what you are saying is that Gonzaga went 9-4 vs top 20 competition, and then lost 1 game when they got into league play and tournament time. They played teams like Ok St, Tennessee twice, UConn, Maryland, Utah, and St. Mary's. This looks a little tougher than Akron's schedule, and to win 25 games with that schedule is quite an accomplishment. People on here need to give teams their credit when its due. there is a reason why Gonzaga gets more exposure than Akron, its because they are much better, deal with it. You are making Akron fans look stupid.
