If a coach doesnt want to come here because of some "out clause" (which every single coach at every single program is subject to termination if the administration feels he isnt holding up his end of the bargain), then it doesnt sound like any coach we want. He obviously lacks confidence in himself and his coaching abilities if he doesnt think he can improve a 1-11 team in 2 years. -
Take it for what its worth, but my guy who works in the football department (same one who called the Ianello firing and the reason for waiting), has told me that an announcement should be made tomorrow. They were apparently cleaning the football office for the new coach today.

PD Reports that Winters is staying at Wayne State

If we are trying to get Johnson we better go NOW and not wait around til he has some success (wins the bowl game) like we did with PW and he gets offered and decides to stay at UCLA. -

Wow, we can't even lure a hometown guy who is coaching D2? The state of Akron football is very, very sad. -
Stoops is more than likely going to be on OSU's staff. I am skeptical about it happening, but lets not act like its impossible. Didnt Akron hire Faust right after he was fired from Notre Dame? We CAN get the big boys.

My source who works for the football team (and told me about the firing of Ianello and he reasons it was delayed, which proved to be true) and my other source who is a player, have both told me Tressel has an interview today.
-
agree. no need to be a jackass
-
anybody have an idea of how much money Akron has to work with?

Didn't the same thing get said about Ianello? The example has been set by Rob. Recruiting here is not the same as recruiting at Notre Dame. Same would probably be true for Tressel. Recruiting here is no the same as at OSU. One exception though; He would probably recruit Ohio well because of his reputation (even if tarnished a bit) and his connections. Was Tressel a "cheater"? I don't know where it is, but someone on here made a great post about what he did wrong, but nothing he did was cheating, particularly on the field. It appears that there was a subculture trying to get things for some of the players, and Tressel didn't reign it in. Did he know and turn a blind eye or was he truly oblivious and poorly motivated to acknowledge the problem when the signs surfaced? Either way, it's bad in the eyes of the NCAA, and he is the man to take the blame, but was he "cheating"? He played 5 players for an entire season, who he knew were ineligible because they committed NCAA violations. That's cheating. He was also under FBI investigation, and was not aloud to release confidential information. One would figure FBI triumphs the NCAA, but I suppose not.

Footballscoop obviously has a good UA source as they were the first to nail the Ianello firing, so they have big creds with me. I'll just repeat here what I said in an earlier post: Tressel may not be the greatest college football coach in America. But he is without question the best proven college football coach who would even have the slightest chance of considering coming to Akron for what UA can afford to pay. that source was the first to report Ianello was being hired by Akron a couple years ago. This latest scoop makes me think the "source" is someone that posts on this board. A quote about facilities being best in the MAC? Come on. Still hope it's right. you dont think Akron has one of the better football facilities in the MAC?

LeBron, CP3, D Wade, & Carmelo Coming to Akron

So with the NBA lockout being over, is the game still going to be played? Even if it is, are some of the players going to back out? -
might be more credible if he knew his facts.
-
sorry guys, would love to see it, but lets be realistic here, there is no way we are going to get Tressel. Also about the rumor. I have a good source who works for the football program. He's told me: They were going to fire Ianello this week, but have delayed it until after the last game because of his mother's death.

Super-conference discussion (Akron specific)
LZIp replied to LZIp's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
That was more of the direction I was trying to go in, not who the Big East is looking to add. There is no doubt that there are many schools more qualified to join a major conference than Akron.About WV- they were initially denied by the SEC, but if the SEC decides to expand to 16, they will be considered. -
Super-conference discussion (Akron specific)

So Syracuse and Pitt joining the ACC were solely football driven? I don't believe that for one second. If it were solely football driven, WVU wouldnt have been denied by the SEC and ACC. -
I was reading another forum, and somebody started a topic about which Ohio MAC team would be the best fit for the Big 10. This was hypothetical obviously because no MAC school is on the level of overall academics, sports teams, fan base, and facilities as all of the Big 10 members. This got me doing a little bit of thinking about what is going to happen to all of the "outcast" schools who are left in the dust. I've heard talk of a new division being made, or a lot of schools dropping to FCS. However, nobody knows what is going to happen at this point. So I decided to do some research comparing MAC schools with each other to see which one(s) may have a legitimate shot at joining one of these super conferences. The Big East is still trying to salvage itself even with members leaving, and I also consider it the weakest of the current "Big 6" conferences, excluding basketball. The Big East also makes sense geographically for most, if not all MAC members. What members from the MAC are most likely to be invited to the Big East? My first bid would go to Temple. They field good football and basketball teams pretty regularly, they have more than adequate facilities (play at Lincoln Financial field and their basketball arena holds 10000+), and I'm pretty sure they have pretty good academics. They also bring the Philadelphia market to the table. So, who would be the second choice? I personally think our Akron Zips would have a pretty good chance of being #2.Last season, Akron finished 15th overall in the Capital One Cup which was first in the MAC by far, and would have finished second in the Big East, behind UCONN at 7. Akron's academics depend on which list you go to, but there is no denying that Akron has some outstanding programs that rank well nationally. Plus, academics in the Big East wouldn't be a make or break thing like it would be in potentially joining the Big 10. Akron has the 3rd biggest fan base in the MAC. Only behind Buffalo and Temple (which is understandable to due the large market those teams are located in).If Akron were to join, the Big East would enter the NE-Ohio Market as well. Out of the Ohio MAC teams, Akron has the newest, largest, and nicest football and soccer stadiums. Not to mention we are a soccer powerhouse. Now onto basketball, which is the Big East. Our basketball team isnt a Butler, VCU, or George Washington...but we still have one of, if not the top basketball program in the MAC. Our arenas is small, only holding 5500, but isnt there talks of building a new one?Where do you think Akron ends up after this madness is over and what is your reasoning?

temple is taking it to penn state, not afraid to play with the big boys.
