And if he stays here this year, he gets a chance to showcase his talents and get Nate money next year + whatever we pay him this year. You likely only get one shot at a life changing payday in college. If you get multiple, you’re going pro and an extra million isn’t going to be a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Transferring to potentially bury yourself on a bench and limit yourself is risky.
Would be curious to know why opposing coaches who had the chance to recruit him in high school (and didn’t) and never saw him play prior to this year would think that.
Does it though? I think there’s good intentions behind it, but I’ve only seen Enrique in an ad and a couple players who have had gear sold with their names on them, and that was only briefly.
So either John is stealing them which pisses me off, or they’re taking a really big risk. Can’t imagine their market is much more than what we’re able to pay them, and they could both be looking at pretty substantial pay days if they show what they can do being a focal point of a team.
Times were different then. Players couldn’t transfer and be immediately eligible. Much easier to reload immediately in today’s environment. I may be misremembering, but I think KD took some signees too.
From quick back of the napkin math based on google search results, the 6 home football games drew more total attendance than all of the home basketball games this past season , so I would think a lot of people would care.
The math has been done on this board many times. The U comes out ahead staying in FBS compared to dropping to FCS. The A10 and MVC are basically 1 bid leagues anymore. Don’t see the benefit of joining a tougher bball conference when there aren’t going to be anymore spots available.
Thank you. Tired of everyone attacking football. A respectable football program is a great asset to a University. Why does nobody ever talking about cutting any of the non-revenue generating sports that nobody pays attention to?
If we can afford to keep players like Enrique (even with the discount I’m sure he gave us) and Tavari, I hope we can keep anyone who is slated to come back next year.
Another positive - we didn’t have to waste six figures on a customary “search firm”. We do need to start making our buyouts bigger though. We got peanuts when both KD and Groce left. Charleston got 1.3 million plus a home and home with a bettter program, and I don’t think they were paying Mack THAT much more. We should be sitting pretty with a solid extra war chest close to 7 figures.
Young, Mahaffey, and? Sad part is, Groce has the money to grab who he wants.
We were going to be a younger team next year as it was. I have to imagine a few players leave, to Charleston or elsewhere. Maybe opens up the opportunity for a reload rather than a down year.
Not advocating for Dru, but without looking at numbers, I am pretty sure KD was a middle of the road coach (maybe slightly above .500) at Duquesne over his career as well.
