University of Washington Husky Stadium concept:

scheduling question from an Indiana fan
K-Roo replied to hoosierbowlyearishere's topic in Akron Zips Football
The reason that section is closed is because it is unsafe... there is an underground river that eats away at the foundation... every few years they have to pour a million dollars of concrete under there to shore it up. With attendance what it is and a new stadium in the plans, UA will not throw more $$$ "up the river." -

just FYI on the Attendance issue raised in various threads...This is from the NCAA website NCAA.org"What's the difference between Divisions I, II and III?Division IDivision I member institutions have to sponsor at least seven sports for men and seven for women (or six for men and eight for women) with two team sports for each gender. Each playing season has to be represented by each gender as well. There are contest and participant minimums for each sport, as well as scheduling criteria. For sports other than football and basketball, Division I schools must play 100 percent of the minimum number of contests against Division I opponents -- anything over the minimum number of games has to be 50 percent Division I. Men's and women's basketball teams have to play all but two games against Division I teams; for men, they must play one-third of all their contests in the home arena. Schools that have football are classified as Division I-A or I-AA. I-A football schools are usually fairly elaborate programs. Division I-A teams have to meet minimum attendance requirements (average 15,000 people in actual or paid attendance per home game), which must be met once in a rolling two-year period. Division I-AA teams do not need to meet minimum attendance requirements. Division I schools must meet minimum financial aid awards for their athletics program, and there are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that a Division I school cannot exceed. "

From the MAC Handbook...lots of calculating to do... but if Zips win out and get a little help... it could still happen.. but must win out...Divisional ChampionsThe divisional championship shall be decided on conference winning percentage. If two or more teams are tied for the championship, they shall be considered divisional co-champions. The following tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine which team will represent that division in the MAC Championship game:1. Head-to-head competitiona. In the event of a multiple-team tie, the team with the best head-to-head record amongst the tied teamswins the tie-breaker;b. Team(s) eliminated in the initial tie-breaker criterion are not included in further consideration in the tiebreakingformula;c. Head-to-head competition is again used to break the tie between the remaining tied teams.2. Record of tied teams within the division [versus rank order of division teams]a. The above tie-breaker procedure is used to determine rank order in the division;b. Team(s) eliminated in the second tie-breaker criterion are not included in further consideration in thetie-breaking formula;c. Head-to-head competition is again used to break the tie between the remaining tied teams.3. Comparison of conference winning percentage of cross-over opponents of tied teams;a. Tie-breaker is awarded to the team whose cross-division opponents had the best cumulative conferencewinning percentage;b. Head-to-head competition is used to break the tie between the two tied teams.4. If multiple teams remain tied, the fi nal tie-breaker is as follows:a. Record of tied teams versus cross-division opponents in rank order;b. Head-to-head competition is used to break the tie between the two tied teams.

As a long time fan, who endured the Dennison to Faust fiasco and the Lee Owens regime, here is my perspective on the season thus far and on the JD era in general:Unlike previous coaches, JD fields a competitive team that rarely gets blown out (I give a pass on the 1st season) and competes to the end.Last season was great. But a surprise to all of us .. and even to JD -- he had to set new and higher goals this season -- he figured 4-5 years before competing for a MAC Championship. We are on the way but there are gong to be bumps in the road along the way. We have a lot of young or inexperienced skill position players on the field -- they are learning.I try not to get too excited when something good happens (NC State) and not too depressed when something bad occurs (Can't). The Zips always lose one or two they shouldn't and win one or two they aren't supposed to... It usually balances out. I would not be surprised if the Zips come out on fire and blast Cincy after being embarassed at Can't last week. JD will not allow us to fold it up and go home.I would not be surprised to see the following:@ Cincinnati W 3-3 (0-2)Miami W 4-3 (1-2)@ Toledo W ***this is one we should lose but I think win -- see above***5-3 (2-2)Bowling Green W 6-3 (3-2)Buffalo W 7-3 (4-2)@ Ohio L *** this is one we should win but might lose --see above*** 7-4 (4-3)Western Michigan toss up 8-4 (5-3)Final Record 8-4 (5-3) if we execute 9-3 (6-2) French says being bowl eligible is the key now.... 32 bowl games need 64 teams. If you drop out the worst 40 or so.... Zips could be in the thick of bowl season somewhere.... Can't will stumble somewhere along the way... they can no longer sneak up on anybody.@ Temple W (Show up collect W and go home) 4-2 (3-0)Toledo L 4-3 (3-1) flushes are full of themselves now and believing the clippings. Rockets are still the class of the conference.. .we all want to be Toledo....Ohio W 5-3 (4-1) Maybe Bobcats pull an upset --- nah@ Buffalo L 5-4 (4-2) **Buffalo came close at NIU and BG... tough at home. flushes drop this one or OU...especially if Toledo spanks them.@ Virginia Tech L 5-5 (4-2) in a laugher Hokies by 30.Eastern Michigan W 6-4 (5-2) EMU has played tough in the past@ Ball State L 7-5 (5-3) Ball State is never a gimme at home (unless you are NDSU) -- We found out last year-- flushes turn this year

As I said JD will fix it....http://www.buchtelite.com/2006/0926/sports_02.shtml"The only aspect in which the Zips showed consistency was the kicking game, which was bad the entire game. Kicker Matt Domonkos missed two extra points in the first half and clanked a field goal off the right post in the third quarter. "It's been frustrating. In practice it has been pretty decent, but it hasn't carried over to the game," Brookhart said. "(Back-up kicker) Igor Iveljic's injury hasn't helped because he hasn't had competition since week one. "We are going to continue to work John Stec more, but Matt is very capable. Somehow, some way, we have to get it right." John Stec joined in Domonkos' trouble. On two consecutive fourth-quarter possessions, Stec had a punt blocked then flubbed a 13-yarder which gave the Mean Green possession at the Akron five and 22-yard lines, respectively. "You have to be perfect in the kicking game," Brookhart said. "You have to have a great snap and good get-off time. I am comfortable with John at punter. The block wasn't on him and then he just missed one."

Cannot believe the whining By the way ...we won... decent crowd.... weather didn't downpour... This could have been a huge let down game... JD had the team ready and it was over after the 1st Quarter. NT made a run, but couldn't close.... kicking is an issue ... but it isn't all on the freshmen.... somebody on the punt team needs to throw a block once in while... Domonkos will win us a game or two before the season ends. JD will straighten it out..... nuff said.We are now 2-2 and play Can't for all the marbles next Sat... None of us figured that...By the way, has anyone started an Antionio Gates watch???Zips control their own destiny. We play every MAC EAST opponent yet. If we win these games, we put ourselves in a good position to win the East. One complaint... went to get my stadium blankets and was told "We are out." This was 30 minutes before game time...... what up with that???? Poor planning....
