RHPB has always been a pathetic organization that never once brought quality programming to the campus. ZPN is even worse and represents how UA administrators manipulate stupid college students into thinking that they have an authentic say in student entertainment. As it stands now, UA will diminish in enrollment and Can't State will increase.

...and what was the content of the original springfest? Do any of you realize that so called springfest is not a new event? UA has been celebrating Spring and the end of the academic year for the past 140 years. Our university brought the Rolling Stones and more to campus facilities in the past. Why does UA pretend that every day is the first day of the existence of our campus?

LOL. What were the other options this year? I didn't even hear about the voting this year(gee, I wonder why only 1,000 students voted...). I have a hard time believing that Owl City could beat out anyone worth a damn. I don't know what the other options were. They never tell me. I think the reason why so little students bother to vote is because the process is so contaminated that most students see through the game and don't bother. If you are a student and did not get to vote, you might want to ask around and see how many others did not get the opportunity. Students or not, you guys need to make your dissapointment known to administrators. They all have e mails.

Not disagreeing with you but Black Keys already played here about 5 years ago at the PAH. Also, UA will argue with you by saying as they do every year, "the students voted for Owl City".

Coming to the UA campus.

I though it was touching when Mrs. Martin said, in reference to her late husband, "he is no longer here, but I know where he is."

good turnout.... 450 present.

Hey, What is the dress expectation/code (for lack of better words) at the banquet?

Happier...there is always room for better. I'm happy to be on the right path. I'm pleased at what I am seeing so far. That doesn't mean I am willing to settle. I'm also optimistic about the growth that is coming around the area of the football stadium. I see more retail, bars and restaurants coming to that area of exchange. Also, I've witnessed first hand that when Info is packed ( a very rare site so far ) the bars around the campus are as well. My original point was not about what I am happy with but how KD responded to the community as a whole showing up. I think we have a lot of support for our programs and our campus. People who claim that "a new UA arena should support the entire community as a whole" need to understand that UA already does so and will continue to do so with an on-campus arena. ABJ 9/6/09 - Proenza said he hears what the students want. And he thinks the new stadium is a perfect answer to their call. ''Students want two things,'' Proenza said. ''Residence halls and structures that bring them together. We're going to build another residence hall behind the stadium. And we think that the stadium itself is going to serve as an anchor structure, both for our students and local residents. ''The stadium will help to create a better sense of campus and a better sense of community for everybody. It's a great facility for everybody in Northeast Ohio and it's going to prove that beginning Saturday. It's got people throughout the region excited.'' Lifelong Akron resident Sally Howard, a former ticket taker at the Rubber Bowl, is one. ''I've dreamed about this [stadium on campus] for most of my life,'' said Howard, who graduated from Akron in 1973. ''But I never thought I'd live to see this happen. ''And I didn't dare to dream that we'd see something as wonderful as this. It's absolutely gorgeous, more impressive than I ever thought it would be. ''Now, I really do believe in miracles. It's a definite wow!'' An off-campus arena will make us look more like a commuter no-campus college and not less. Downtown Akron looks no more like a university campus than the man-in-the-moon and everyone knows this no matter how much they try to spin it for their dishonest agendas which consists of the mayor and county executive... both of whom roll their eyes and mock UA by calling it "Akron U" when no one is looking or listening.

Looks like "Joe Akron" as well as students knew how to find the JAR buried deep in the UA campus hidden from all that is civilized and holy... an amazing feet when one ponders how massive the UA campus is. I'm surprised no one died of thirst trying to hike in distant, uncharted territory attempting to reach the nearest bar. "Men's Basketball Sees Attendance Increases During 2012-13 Season... ...The community support we saw this season was tremendous," ninth-year head coach Keith Dambrot said. "We would like to give a special thanks to the students this year as they did a great job coming out in record numbers." ... and I'm sure that K.D.'s, T.W's, Ted Curtis' and Dr.P's first priority in building a university arena is to make sure the bars located a stone's throw away are favored by those attending a game. It's academic strategic planning at its progressive best and practiced by all other universities' when engaging their planning strategies and objectives.. Dave Liberth's quote in the ABJ 3/12/09 regarding the proposed location of a skyway on Spicer and Exchange east of the UA football stadium: "Akron Deputy Mayor for Administration David Lieberth said the Skyway ''will be a great addition to downtown." "Akron beacon journal University of Akron approves downtown stadium POSTED: 11:19 a.m. EDT, Aug 01, 2007" On campus = win/win

It's not about distance (or closeness) as much as it is about attitude and a true sense of campus. UA deserves its own sense of place. That's why the arena needs to be on the actual campus and not some pseudo-campus. It makes all the difference in the world when building student, alumni and citizen pride not to mention recruitment value.
-
Ok, keep this in mind. The location of a new University of Akron Arena is not about how close it is to other campus locations or how far it is from Grant Street Residence Halls and on and on and on. The location of a UA arena has more to do with attitude and an appropriate sense of campus and place. While a downtown arena may be close to campus, such is not the point. It will not be on campus and more importantly, it will not look on campus... proximity to campus is immaterial. A downtown arena will not look like it is part of a university campus and therefore will not be on-campus. The mayor and county executive already know this and that is what they are banking on. They purposefully want to obfuscate the identity and image of a UA arena in order to trick people into thinking that it is a municipal city of Akron Arena.
-
Good points and you will have to convince the mayor and his syncophants to get over it.
-
A superb idea. They should do it just after takeng out Ritchie, Sisler Mcfawn and Gertrude Orr Hall. Ya know they are going to meet the wrecking ball very soon now.

I think we should take the Chapel by Eminent Domain!

UA owns a lot of land back there by Buchtel field and not just Buchtel field. A baseball field and more can go in that vicinity. Not to state that it will definitely happen but it has been discussed. Also, I was told by a very reliable source that UA is going to renovate E.J. Thomas Hall. They will be tearing out all of the seats in the flying balcony and replacing them with standing platforms and will have all UA students attend shows in the flying balcony forcing them to stand during the entire concert. It's meant to give the hall that mosh pit quality.
-
Yes, that's been in the planning since 2007. The existing courts are being taken down to make more green space for Coleman Commons. Good move on the part of UA.
-
And ask Dr. P, the mayor and the ABJ and they will tell you that the campus is not downtown. Why else would they make the distinction between "a downtown arena" vs "an on-campus arena"? Just because the Polsky building and QS are owned by UA does not mean that all of downtown is part of the campus. While all poodles are dogs not all dogs are poodles.
-
Thank you for making clear the obvious. Unfortunately, some on here need that kick in the head. What does it take for people to realize that the UA campus is the most central place to meet and greet in Akron, Summit County and the NE Ohio region as a whole. Stop trying to twist, distort and pilfer it into downtown Akron. Let the campus be the campus and downtown be downtown. On some days the mayor and the paper will describe the UA campus as being in downtown and on other days, they will say it is distinct. It is obvious that the UA location changes according to the political whim of the day.

What is a non-university event? What makes UA students different from non- university "people" (hint: there is a difference but I want to know what your idea of a difference is and how it has an impact on turnout at a UA facility) What is a university event as opposed to a non-university event at UA's Thomas Hall?. Another question I continue to have is that why do some of you have the contaminated feeling/thinking that if an arena is on-campus, it will be specific to basketball but if it is off-campus, it will be multi-purpose? Also, there is no difference between an all-purpose arena and a multi-purpose arena. Why is it that although the paternalism is not announced in some posts, I still see a glimmer or spirit of it?

bought my season tickets already...go zips!

I see another hook being baited... that's nice! In any event, here is something to consider: Can't State has around 28,000 students enrolled on its main campus and UA has just under 29,000 enrolled at its main campus (does not include either school's branch campuses). Those who live on Can't State's main campus amount to 5,000. Those who live on UA's main campus number a bit above 3,300. At both institutions there are a rather large number of students who live in just off campus housing. That includes everything from brand new private housing developments exclusively for students to slum lord owned rat traps. When you consider both of these populations, I'd say that UA is hardly anymore of a commuter campus than Can't State.

Exactly! As I've always said. Downtown could not exist without The University of Akron, but The University of Akron can do just fine without downtown. It's not the symbiotic relationship many Akronites including the mayor and ABJ try to contrive it to be. Their destinies are not "inseparably linked" as the Anti-University of Akron Beacon Journal once decreed! BTW, while the terminology comes off as disrespectful, the concept of "the City of Akron U" is a good thing not a bad thing.
