Fleck, like basketball coaches Groce, Hurley, created a brand for himself.  when I watched Fleck, I always thought he was preening for the cameras, making himself a BRAND and building himself up more than he was the school's program.

I 100% agree. I found this comment about him in an article about his recent engagement (now married) after divorcing his wife, mother of 4 kids, from a Broncos fan.

I don't really care about his personal life, my thing with him is that he loves the spotlight. Everything about him screams "hey, look at me". He has become the face of Bronco Football as opposed to the student athlete. Print media for other Bronco sports features the players... Usually seniors... Not football... All PJ. Just look at the billboards and all media, his face is the first one you see. Somehow, I doubt this is the marketing departments decision. When I've heard him speak, he doesn't acknowledge his staff. It is all about him. Scholarships are offered all the time to players and have been for years, usually privately in a locker room or in a families living room...PJ films everything and plasters it all over social media inadvertently letting everyone know what a great guy he is. I take a lot of heat about supporting Bowden, but IMHO, he is always deflecting attention back to the kids and his staff. I have heard him talk about wanting to build a winning program - a perennial winner, not a one and done and the fact that he has roots here and plans on staying. Does he use the Bowden name? Sure, but not that much, truthfully, and nothing compared to Fleck.

WMU had their year of glory. Now what?

I like the concept, but it is a little too out there for me to like in practice. I want to continue seeing Minn/Wisconsin, OSU/UM, and Indiana/Purdue the last week of the season (ok that last 1 I could do without). There is just so much tradition in those match-ups, not to mention Bama/Auburn, Florida/Florida State, etc if you are looking to expand to other conferences.

I am probably too old school, but I like the traditions of the last week games. I would not pair teams as described - I would leave scheduling along, for the most part. It does lead to an imperfect system, but the value of the major upsets that happen every year are worth it, IMHO. Tradition, drama, and underdog upsets are the stuff that makes college football a lot more exciting than the NFL. There is a lot more parity in college football than analysts and Vegas would like to acknowledge. As mentioned on another thread, it can be painful to watch the shellackings at the hands of bigger programs, but without those, you lose the exhilaration of the major upsets, too. I think we so often want a professionalize amateur, college football and when we do that we lose a lot of what I love about college football.

I wasn't happy with the OSU pick for the playoffs, this year, but I would rather live with that then over-engineer college football any further.

  3. Chambers now has an offer from Ole' Miss

It's going to be a deluge, I think.

I imagine some will say, some will follow, but there will definitely be some for the taking. I'd be thrilled if we could get 1 or 2.

Of WMU's commits, we have an offer out to:

    - 3* QB Tanner Morgan, who I assume is off the table due to our commits and his offer list.

    - 3* DT Tyron Chambers from Cleveland. Has quite a nice offer list though.

    - 3* ILB Dwayne Chapman. Also has a nice G5 offer list.

Not necessarily off the table. He's a pro-style QB. If we think we can snag him, we will. Other QBs might see that offer and walk on their own or come and leave when they don't see the field.

These statements don't appear to be going over well.

I was really irritated about the headline and the way this was framed. He clearly said he was joking. It was dumb joke, but he is an 87 year old man.

I have read other responses that indicated he was slighting the mothers, but if you listened to the entire interview, there was no slight, at all. Find me a single mother with an absentee dad who doesn't wish there was a quality dad around for her children. That doesn't take anything away from the mother, at all. Raising kids is tough and doing it alone is a monumental task.

I think the whole thing was clumsy, but the outrage is ridiculous.

Great Post.  One of these days we'll hopefully break through.

I love the OOC football road trips.  My wife and I have gotten to see a lot of new places that way, and Madison was no exception.  But I have to admit, I've never made this Penn State trip, through all of the times we've played them dating back to 2000 I believe??   I'm planning on finally making this one.  Looking forward to it.  For those of you who've never been to that area, it's beautiful.

I made the last PSU trip and it was an awesome experience. The fans couldn't have been nicer and it was awesome hearing the stadium dead quiet with a close score, going into halftime. Our D played a great game that day. I also attended the Iowa-PSU Whiteout game. That ranked just below the Tennesee - Alabama game experience, for me.

It would have been very exciting to see him play here and I'm quasi-enjoying following him since he was supposed to come here, but I just wonder what the bad press would have been like and if it would have been worth it. I'm not sure the Mixon stuff Stoops is dealing with is worth it. Chiefs are taking some heat as well with Hill now that he is on the national stage.

    I can't say I disagree.

  8. I didn't see this kid on the commitment list.

5' 10" listed as an ATH from Florida

Here he is with a pick 6 at an all star game:

in 2015 Woodson established himself as a dual threat QB when he rushed for a respectable 603 yards on the season.

I wonder why through the first four games in 2016 he managed to rush for only 4 positive yards:

He seemed to lose the mobility he displayed in 2015.

Even Tyrell Goodman ended up the season with more rushing yards than Woodson.

IMO, Woodson became more of an experienced passer, and didn't have to rely on running. The lack of his called running plays was related to his injured shoulder. If healthy, I would be a little surprised if he were not the starter for the PSU game. It's great to have some real competition at the position though. Hopefully the overall depth at the position will improve dramatically.

I had the same question about his rushing attempts and also decided it was because he became a more experienced passer. I also think our 2016 line provided better protection. I did wonder if he were to have rushed it a few more times if it would have opened up the pass a little more. I think it would have been a little foolish for him to rush against Wisconsin and there simply wasn't a need against App State or Marshall as they did not come close to shutting down our pass game. Like you said, after App State, he was nursing the injury and it would not seem wise to unnecessarily expose him to further injury to that shoulder.

  10. With our recent additions and Tommy's nagging injury, it appears as though we might be heading for a QB competition.

    Here are the contenders:

    1. Tommy Woodson  (Sr) (6'1") led Zips to first bowl win, played very well until injury vs App State.
    2. Kato Nelson (R-Fr) (6' 1")  3 star recruit, highly sought after by G5 schools
    3. Clayton Uecker ( 2 yrs of eligibility left, sat out 2016) 6' 5",good stats before he transferred
    4. Alex Ramart -  (Fr) (6' 4")
    5. Nick Johns  (6' 4" Jr)  former 3 star recruit to Virignia, left for JUCO, available for spring football

All but Ramart (unless he is able to enroll early), will be available for spring football. If Ramart is unable to enroll early, he won't be part of the 2017 battle, from my perspective. Summer camp is way to too short to properly acclimate a new QB, unless they are extraordinary.

I would say that a lot of the battle will be determined by how healthy Tommy is. I think even if he is 100%, the coaches will be interested in competition and getting a solid 3 deep rotation ready. The reports of Nelson from summer camp were very good, so I will be interested to watch him throw at spring ball. I am not sure how realistic Uecker is - I can't compare from film and the level of competition is also pretty tough to compare.

I really do hope Tommy returns, strong and healthy and that a competition pushes him harder and prepares a couple of back-ups. We have been very successful with Tommy and he is talented enough to take us to a MAC championship, should the rest of the team develop to that level. I don't see Bowden opting for a longer term pick, like Nelson, if Tommy is healthy. The program needs to win this year.

If Tommy isn't better, TB may opt for a more experienced player like Johns or Uecker (if he is any good) and begin working Nelson into game situations. It might the type of situation where we run with 2 QBs for the first part of the season. We open at Penn State and with the way they developed this season, I would not want to see Nelson face them as his first opponent.

Notably absent from the list is Tra'von Chapman. I don't see him back under center, unless it is run a wildcat in short yardage or for a trick play. I think it can be fairly argued that he is not able to keep up with the pace of D1 football under center.

The wildcard would be 5th year transfer from a P5 school, but that would need to materialize right away as I don't see us playing a transfer who has not been to spring football unless it is a huge catch.

  11. Pughsley was one of six signed by the Ravens to Future/reserve contracts, today. "All of those players were on the practice squad at the end of the season, so the Ravens are simply keeping them under contract so they don’t sign anywhere else."

But she surely was capable of sitting on the committee and making sure that the "popular", money-making choices get in the playoff.

What a joke.  Clemson would have beaten the Suckeyes by 50 last night, if their offense hadn't made so many mistakes.  I wonder if any Suckeye Honks want to contend that Penn State would not have performed much, much better?  Last night showed us that the committee should have seen far more from the OSU/Penn State game and the 1-point OSU/Michigan State game, and dropped them appropriately in the standings.  Instead, the committee clearly showed that they'd rather stand behind a slim, comeback, double OT win, at home, against a Michigan team that had just lost to frickin Iowa.  And then allow them to sit out their conference championship game in order to not expose any further weaknesses (Oh, sorry they dropped them from #2 to #3 ).

Results speak for themselves.  I feel worse for Penn State than I felt a few weeks ago.

Look, I am not going to defend the committee. I didn't think OSU deserved to be picked, but to call out Rice, exclusively, when the poster had no way of knowing whether she supported the OSU choice or not seems a bit odd, at best and wanted to give poster an opportunity to explain why he specifically called Rice out, as opposed to the other committee members.

With 2 losses, PSU is also a questionable choice. Fleck himself came out and basically said that G5 school had to go winless and schedule higher ranked teams in order to be selected, so WMU never stood a chance.

I tend to think the pick should have gone to PSU, with the conference title win, but neither PSU or OSU really deserved to be in the playoffs. They picked a 4th to fill the slot, but there was no clear #4 team. The quality of play dropped off considerably after the top 2 this year.

I am not going to sit here and listen to you guys trash the committee without speaking up.  Condoleezza has done a great job.

I am not sure why you decided to call her out, specifically. Care to elaborate? She isn't the only one without college football coaching or playing experience on the committee.

From what some people in the know said on this forum, I was under the impression Woodson's injury was a bone bruise to his shoulder that caused him a discomfort throwing which impacted his accuracy. I'm not going to try to be a medical expert, but that sounds like something that would heal with rest.

Both are possible. Tendinitis is usually a secondary injury, derived from overuse or compensating for an injury, often when trying to "tough it out." You unknowingly modify your motion or compensate for the initial injury, resulting in the second.
