So 20% of the offense that didn't graduate. Seems high to me considering they were 2 of the most high profile players returning on offense. Nobody else is really good enough to go play elsewhere.

One going to the NFL, one going to his 3rd school. Not really that unusual for D1. But, I guess if there is a negative angle to be four....

Very strange.  This guy tested the transfer waters last year and obviously thought Akron was his best option.  What changed his mind?

I noticed he has a Michigan banner on Twitter. Not sure if he never bothered changing it or if it is new.He also has this as his pinned tweet.

That clip does sound promising. However, I've become less optimistic after seeing that OSU wants him, even if it's as a walk-on. Unfortunately, OSU can make a pretty strong case that he could get playing time and end up on scholarship seeing that Joe Burger (also a LB) went there as a walk-on and was a four-year letterman, who eventually wound up on scholarship. Plus, he's from one of the most affluent schools in the state, so I'm going to guess that his family has the means to be able to afford OSU's tuition if he wants to go there.

I hope I'm wrong on this, because the kid is definitely a great football player.

This is where finances come into play for some kids. Unless you upper middle class, it's hard to turn down free versus the cost of full tuition at OSU. If money is not an object, he might take his chances at OSU.

I wasn't responding to you. My response was to Balsy. I do think it is no coincidence however that his 2 best seasons at Auburn were his 1st 2 years when he was coaching some other coaches recruits.

Edit: Like I've said I'd love for Bowden to prove me wrong and hopefully he will. I just have my doubts.

My apologies, on my phone, it looked like you were quoting me.

However, you cannot ignore the loss of 13 scholarships and post season play when you factor in subsequent years at Auburn.

  4. When did I say anything about Auburn? And I don't agree with your logic. You can have a completely loaded team and fail to deliver an undefeated team and unofficial national champiinship.

And who sold I or anyone else is giving him a pass? Recognizing that things happen beyond human control is far from giving someone a pass.

  5. +1 to both Balsey's and the Captain's posts.

So either it's because he's overrated and not that good, or because Akron was in that deep of a whole and devoid any future, that it's hard for even a successful coach to dig back out.

But seriously are Akron fans really this delusional?

    Take your pick.

This is something I have thought about recently. We are still overcoming the notion of the barrel perception and it takes a little time to dig out from under that. I saw a comment, recently, about a P5 school not wanting to be the type of school that, "plays schools like Akron."

I have said before, barring the onslaught of injuries that sinks us this year, we would have had another "good" season and gone to another bowl. We almost made it, with a pretty rough season. Given the loss of our front 7 on December, a good season would have been acceptable to most of us, given where we are on curve of developing as a program.

It takes a couple, or even a few "good" seasons to get the depth needed to overcome the injuries we had this year. A great team has great talent, depth, and a fair amount of luck. Yes, strength and conditioning can help prevent the injuries, to an extent, but only to an extent. We had pretty bad luck with injuries. It created a QB crisis and took our defense from bad to worse for a few games.

If we stink it up next year, I think there will be a lot less patience and understanding, but with the return of most of our offense, and the development of more options at QB, the development of our defense, a Pitt transfer at LB on the roster who will be eligible to play, the recruiting class, plus whatever transfers we inherit, I am optimistic that we will return to the upward trajectory.

  6. My issues with him are about his over the top, it's all about me persona plus the whole rumor of an affair soon after losing child, and then having the nerve to market (more or less) the horrible story of losing a child and then freaking out when other schools make fun of the RTB mantra...and by the way, word is that Wisconsin was singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" after the Cotton Bowl.

To me, college football should be about the student athlete, first.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I won't feel about feeling like he is a punk. I don't begrudge him getting a better job (though better is debatable in the case of Minnesota.) I thought it was great for Babers to go to Syracuse. I just don't like Fleck.

The main list has been updated. Hopefully I have everybody. I'm keeping Nick Johns on there as a JUCO recruit. He may be a transfer, but shouldn't have to sit out. I took off the Oregon kids. I'd be shocked at this point if they show up.

The mid-year enrollees we got last year counted against that recruiting class, so that makes sense.

I can't answer for all fans, but most of the people I know had lost interest even before the OU game.  They really didn't care if we became a .500 bowl team.  Maybe the expectations after 2015 created that.

Great point!  I personally lost interest around December, so I guess I'd be included in that (but it was with...other...things going on in my life that caused that, though the University was a player in it).  I still watched every game.  But OBJECTIVELY I though I would have (and am) upset the Zips weren't able to cash-in on a golden opportunity, I can step back and realize the true circumstance of this season; and had we made a second bowl game I would have in the end considered it a success.  5-7 is definitely a down year.  6-6 for a program that hasn't had consecutive .500 seasons...really ever in D-1 (maybe back in the Lee Owens era we did...almost 20 years ago), it should be viewed as a success.

Yup. It was too painful to watch the QB situation. The Buffalo game sealed the deal. Woody looked so not like himself, it was too painful to watch and I had little hope that Goodman could catch up fast enough.

You can visit any school you want, all coach has to do is make a call, I won't talk bad about recruits, my opinion is he will stay strong, he is a D lineman without D lineman size for D1, I know we are not tier one but that is my only concern when looking at the recruits height, weight, speed is some concern me, big difference between high school & D1 & every inch & every bit of speed helps

I am not sure I understand your comments (sincerely.) Are you saying 6'7"/320 is too small for D1 DL?

Here's the list of class of 2017 players who have committed to play for the Zips so far:

    In-state:

Marcus Kidd, DE, Garfield HS, Akron, OH

Jemarulin Suggs, RB, East HS, Akron, OH

Deandre Brimage, DL, East HS, Akron, OH

Marquess Callaway, CB, East HS, Akron, OH

Marquise Bridges, RB, Ellet HS, Akron, OH

Tracy Jordan, DL, Springfield HS, Akron, OH

Malik Woodridge, ATH, St Vincent St Mary HS, Akron, OH

Justin Sampson, DE, St Vincent St Mary HS, Akron, OH

Kobie Booker, DE/TE, Barberton HS, Barberton, OH

Dusty Burkhart, WR/CB, Coventry HS, Coventry, OH

Reggie Corner Jr., SS/RB, McKinley HS, Canton, OH

    Out of state:

Hunter Corne, OL, Dunnellon HS, Dunnellon, FL

Moris Lugo, LB, Carol City HS, Miami, FL

Jeremiah Ramirez, G, Hillsboro HS, Hillsboro, OR

Kennedy Pickens, RB, Hillsboro HS, Hillsboro, OR

Will Barto, LB, Briarcrest Christian HS, Eads, TN

Jordyn Riley, ATH, North Marion HS, Citra, FL

Nick Johns, QB, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Miami, OK

Alex Ramart, QB, Foster HS, Richmond, TX

Jerome Cooper, SS/RB, Utica Stevenson HS, Sterling Heights, MI

I can't find much of anything confirming the two Oregon commitments beyond their initial tweets, but Oregon isn't much of a HS football hotbed, with very few recruits and very little media coverage.

Plus Malik Townsend from Pittsburgh.... makes 21 recruits. I wonder which have either decommitted or are prefered walk-ons?

I spent some time re-acquainting myself with some of the recruits. I forgot that Kidd is 6' 7" 320 lbs. The ABJ article said we want him for o-lone. Maybe we should reconsider that. Brimage visited MSU a month ago but show nothing about a change in his commitment. Let's hope he holds strong.

The difference is a coach will actually WANT to go to WMU. They have a roster full of talent, an alumni base that will fork over the money and a fan base that is now gaining traction. We have what? .... A retread name that has beaten 2 teams with a winning record in 5 seasons.

We will see how much talent they have left and how they adapt to the changes. Their recruiting class is going down hill, fast. BGSU did not transition well after Babers left (I like Babers, a lot.)

    7 hours ago, LZIp said:

Rob Ianello was supposed to be a pretty great recruiter too. What does WMU have now? What did they REALLY achieve this season? WMU won nothing of significance and now they have nothing. As Akron natives Andre Knott and Zac Jackson would say..."Congrat"

That is how I felt about it, too. They won a MAC title and played and lost in the Cotton Bowl. Was their close loss a "moral victory"? I thought they didn't matter? They were a very good football team. They were not elite.

G5 schools have to establish themselves as successful programs over multiple years to gain respect in rankings and ever hope to have a chance at a college football playoff (not sure it will ever happen.) WMU had 1 very good season. Next year, they go back to being a middle of the road G5 school.

What's with this turning on Bowden?  Let me remind everyone that we had our most successful season as a D-1 program last year.

This year was, most certainly, a disappointment.  But we lost a ton on D & would have still made a bowl game and (I'm going to say) won the MAC East if Woody hadn't been hurt.

And this year's recruiting class is shaping up to be the likes of which we've been looking for since we moved to D-1 (can't believe it's taken so long to begin to get the local talent to buy in).

If you're going to consider Les Miles then you might as well consider Pelini too. He's playing for a FCS title today. I haven't done any reading on who their targets are, but think he would be a good fit for WMU.

I think I would prefer Pelini over Miles....but let's wait for the next 2 seasons to pass before we worry about it. They aren't going to buy Bowden out unless some major scandal happens with the pressure on spending.

It sure is a fine line.  Coaching is a cutthroat world.  You are hero one moment and a big loser the next.  One day you are getting couple million a year and you and your family are treated like royalty.  Next day you are an assistant basketball coach at some SUNY school.  If you don't build yourself up, who will?  However, doesn't mean the WMU fans don't have a right to be bitter or feel used.  But it's a tradition in MAC football programs that these guys leave.  WMU knew the score.

It is worth noting that the comments are a few months old, from the Bronco fan. I agree, they all knew he would leave. I can also understand why the players might feel betrayed. I think they all bought into what he was selling.
