No offense at Akron since Dalton Williams. Made mistakes at picking QB ever since they benched Kyle Pohl at Oklahoma. Tra'von, are you kidding me? He was a receiver all the way. All coaching, or lack thereof. Need a new OC for sure. Lack of imagination is so evident. It's not all Woody, he just ain't the answer. Who else we have?

Chapman is the obvious choice but he isn't the QB the Zips need, just a better choice than Goodman. We have let other QB's in the program go, never given a chance or told there was no future for them here who could do the job. Kyle P one time told me he had seen 13 QB's come and go in the 4 years he was there. Woody was having a great year before he got hurt. I believe if he would have stayed healthy we would have won at least 2 or 3 more games and in so doing he would have surpassed a lot of passing records. As other post have stated, Woody's injury, lack of defense and key injuries were our problem this year. The Tra'von thing didn't work out from the beginning and he has one more year of eligibility. Let him join a talented receiving corps and do his thing in space next year. Recruit another QB or two this year and LET THEM PLAY SOME IN SCRIMMAGES, SPRING GAME AND CAMP! I watched several spring games from MAC and P-5 schools this year. They all let 4 or 5 QB's show what they could do. Not us, just Woody and Tra'von and a cameo drive for Hoyer. Given our offensive tunnel vision it kind of reminds me of the democrats thinking they knew it all about who would win the rust belt in the election. That's why we play the game, just let the QB's play the game and see who comes out on top.

Agree with you in that the season is a wash. We probably beat the bugs and lose at Ohio. If somehow we can pull out a win at Ohio that would be incredible. I think it is possible for us to do it too. 6-5 and a bowl invitation would be nice. Next year, because of my feelings about tunnel vision in player selections we do not change much offensively. I see offensive inconsistency next year and if Tra'von isn't switched to receiver we lose a gifted player from being on the field.

Ok, will try to elaborate. And, bear in mind that we all just state opinions from observations. I mostly just watch and read the forum. I'm a fan of Akron, love the school and what is becoming. It's an awesome place. Hated the football under Rob I but loved the offense under Bowden's first year with Dalton. I saw a lot of promise even though we went 1-10. Dalton was a great young man, a wonderful player and that offense worked. The problem with that year is that we could move the ball on anyone but could stop no one thanks to Rob I. That changed as coach Chuck got involved. I have always thought he was a defensive genius. May be past his prime but better than anyone we ever had before and our defenses of the past 3-4 years have shown huge improvement, best in the MAC one year. With that said, since Dalton there has been no offensive consistency. A spark here and there but nothing consistent. Ok, here is my opinion about questionable coaching personnel decisions and you are welcome to yours. The year that Kyle Pohl emerged came out of the Michigan game when he performed right up there with our defensive performance. We were close to an upset on the road of a major P5 program. Don't know if you remember or not but Kyle had been injured that week and was not even slated to play. Nick Hirschman was also out with the knee injury. It was day by day on Kyle. Do you know who took all the first team reps at QB that week? Dalton Easton. Remember him? Well, Dalton was told by all he was going to start at Michigan. Dalton never saw a play the rest of the year as Kyle emerged and Hirschman was hurt. Kyle went the rest of the way, played well enough to solidify his position for that and the next year. Dalton Easton transferred out to an FCS program, never given a chance at Akron. Now, in all fairness, he was smaller than a typical QB but my point is the kid was NEVER given a chance. I watched a lot of practices, the kid was quick, made good decisions, got first team reps but because of OC tunnel vision did not see the field. Bottom line, he went to Bryant, assumed a starting QB role and turned their offense around. Weaker last year but his first and second year there he did well, a lot better than Tra'von ever did at The D 2 school he transferred from. Go to the 2014 season and We have Kyle as the Junior and Hirschman as the 5th year senior. Hirschman wanted to play badly but he never saw the field one single play that year. He was a really good QB and had big time game experience as a transfer from Colorado. When the coaches went from Kyle to Woodson and bypassed Hirschman to give things a try, it was a bust. Kyle was the guy that year no doubt about it but from what I heard and what I saw, Hirschman was the clear number 2 and maybe should have had the chance at number 1. He was good. That year, when Woodson came in we nearly lost the game and the next two games we could have won, we didn't. We lost to a weak Ball State team and the other game I have to go look up but equally disappointing. Here you have a seasoned Hirschman on the bench and we are going with a QB that doesn't have it. Open the 2015 season with Tra'von? Are you kidding me? The kid is an athlete, not a QB. He can run but he cannot pass. Kyle Pohl sitting on the bench and we have to watch this. Like I said, tunnel vision kept Tra'von in there until half way through the savannah state disaster when they finally benched him. Woody came in and played good that game but the first three games of 2015 showed me all I needed to see about questionable decisions. Like Bowden has said, Woody can throw the ball and while he is a little illusive for a big kid, he's not fast. He makes bad reads a lot of times and I know the same could be said of Kyle in the red zone in 2014. Anyway, ive seen a certain type of QB athlete be given a lot of opportunities and I've seen another class of QB's shown the door through indifference and being given No chance. Say all you want about a QB not being that good but you never know what you got until you let a kit show you what he's got. At Akron football unless you are "the anointed one" by whoever ultimately makes the decision (HC or OC) you are NOT ever going to be given the opportunity to show what you can do. Going back lack to what I started with and Dalton Williams. That kid was good. He was a 5th year senior who transferred to Akron because he basically had no where else to go. He played behind a QB at Stephen f Austin in Texas for 4 years and redshirted his JUNIOR year so he could be the starter in his 5th year senior year. A coaching change wiped that dream away and he got here because of Milwee and Bowden. He had a golden arm and could lead an offense but NEVER got a chance his first 4 years. At Akron he did and he was the guy going in. What he did with his opportunity showed everyone a lot and he went on to compete for an NFL job because he did such a great job at AKron. Good for him. The guy starting in front of him all those years at SFA? Nothing there. Dalton Williams did good because he was good and because he was given a chance. Our offensive inconsistency is because a lot of other QB's have not been given a chance. Until the mindset is changed and other QB's given a chance, not much will change.

Well, let's see now. Hard to discuss this one but a few observations. The outcome was already determined to me after watching that disgrace in Buffalo. Yes, we had a lot to replace this year defensively, no doubt about it. The defense last year was the key to the success. Offense had little to do with it. They did just enough to get by. They were up and down with the competition. Staying on defense, we've had a lot of injuries this year and depth has been an issue. I agree with the one post that discussed lacking leadership, there were many more emotional leaders last year This year the offense is supposed to be better and it might be but like last year and the year before there is no offensive consistency. The skill of the receivers is dramatically improved, they are open and can catch the ball. They run well after the catch too. I Really liked the running of Jones in the second half, wonder where that was earlier in the game. Akron players never seemed like they expected to win this game and when things went downhill, it went quickly. There is something about a mental edge and in key spots, we just don't have it. In coaching player decisions, we're really too narrowly focussed and think we have something we don't.

That is easy to say the guys that left were not as good as Woodson and Chapman. That is a lot harder to prove. Woody and Chapman were the only two given any chance last year and in Spring. With regard to the others, you never know what a kid can do unless you see them in scrimmages or game situations and they were never given that chance. I never saw them given any situations where they could show anything and I watched a ton of practices and scrimmages. I did see Hoyer last spring and did not think he threw well. 1 for 12 said enough, not really fast enough. He's a nice kid and graduates this year and got his first snap in a game a few weeks back. Good for him and I am glad he did. As for KP last season, totally correct in that he was a non-emotional player and did not say much. You are right in that pointing out he didn't have good chemistry and to me a QB must bring emotional energy and passion to the field. Kyle was not that kind of player. However, he still had some big games he performed well in under his belt. Chapman had no place starting and going as far as he did into last season and most agree he is not a QB. With regard to who plays and who doesn't it says one thing, a coach just wants to be proved right until he looks like a fool. Chapman's terrible start last season including the first half against Savannah State who had not won a game in over 2 years proved foolish coaching decisions were made. By doing that and not letting KP start that first game sent him into a funk of wondering why. In my opinion he was done after that, totally out of it even without a concussion. Asking a guy to come in after that kind of starting situation is a huge mental hurdle to overcome. To me, that was bad coaching. In the end, defense saved the say and the O had just enough to get us there. Woody emerged and showed he could do something to help lead the team. Lack of consistent offense will continue to be a problem, even next season. Defense may be down a little bit this year but I think next year its going to be much better.

This game was totally predictable. Western Michigan is a quality opponent and we have a lot of injuries. Many comments here about QB play and for the record, Tra'von Chapman was the best available there today. Not sure what is wrong with Woodson. Chapman is better suited to be an H back or inside receiver because he's good in space but he is the second best QB on the team for now. Is he the guy to put in to make decisions on running the team, not really. Hoyer is a good kid but a non scholarship number on the roster. He can't compete as a QB at this level and went 1/12last year in the spring game against reserve players. We've see three or four better QB's leave our program the past 2 years because the HC and OC are so locked in on one kind of QB. Nobody else is going to get a chance with such offensive tunnel vision. Going back to the initial game at Oklahoma last year and their total craziness in Starting Chapman and not Kyle Pohl in that game the die was cast for the mediocrity in offensive production. The defense won the games last year, the offense just did enough to get by. They were inconsistent at best. They over performed against tough competition in the 5 game win streak and underperformed against the weak teams we played. As for me, I don't think we win a lot more games this year. BG is down and a pretty for sure win. Buffalo is a probable. Ball state, maybe. Forget Toledo and Ohio. Get your 7 wins and go to another bowl, that still is better than the past. Mediocrity is better than just plain poor. Respectable program is better than a doormat. But, we can do much better offensively and it has a lot to do with coaching and player decision making.

Explain to to me what is exciting abou going 5/17? That's a 29% completion ratio. As for the QB's they have a lot to prove this year. Last year the defense kept us in games in the end. Offense doing just enough to win isn't enough and won't be enough this year. The team looks like this year could be a breakout year for offense because of the O line potential, the Running backs and current QB development. A balanced attack with consistency is what we need. Jury is still out with me.

Definitely under. I completely agree with Kangaroo Craig's prediction. Too many personnel issues and I'm not sure about QB. Played well enough to win the last 5 games last year but played down to competition too many times. With new O line, QB play could be suspect.

There is no doubt Chapman struggled against Oklahoma but they were obviously one of the best defenses in the nation. Pitt was also quite good, much better than they were expected to be with the new QB. Where Chapman failed was against Savanah St. Remember that he started that game and the offense struggled into the second quarter. The Zips were actually down before coach Bowden decided to bench Chapman and go to Woodson. He would have gone to Pohl but if you recall he had another concussion the prior week against Pitt so he could not play. Chapman came back in the 4th quarter but his destiny the remainder of the year was as backup, same for Pohl when he returned from injury. What surprised me about Chapman is how many chances he got. He seemed to be a deer in the headlights most of the time he played. Without pressure he did ok (4th quarter against Savanah St) but you got to get it done against Ohio and Bowling Green if you are going to go anywhere. From my perspective, last year is in the books but Pohl should have started against Oklahoma. He was the 5th year Senior and had run the team for much of the prior two seasons. He was effective as a QB and had played well against big teams. He had a few bad outings but also did not have the consistency of receivers catching the balls like he should have. The O line gelling last year was also something Woodson would end up benefitting from that Pohl did not have much benefit from. The 5 game win streak was something very good but our offense played to the competition in that period playing well against good competition and down to the weak competition. It was definitely the defense that pushed out team to the top. Overall the result ended up good but it was nip and tuck all the way with games that have should have been convincing winners ending up being close. Based on how we closed the season Woody should be the starter and I think he is that based on coach's comments. As for QB's behind them, who knows what is there as two have left, one let go and another taking a scholly at an FCS school like Dalton Easton did a few years before. Anybody think the new QB coming in from South Florida have anything to offer? I heard he was only like 175 lbs or so. There may be one or two more to fill out the roster but I think we are thin underneath at QB now.

Not sure why Pohl wasn't used. I believe He's deserved the nod from game 1 play 1 but for some reason they do not want him in there. I wonder how his confidence is anyway because of the way the season has gone. I would say it's low. I know Pohl got hurt in the Pitt game but he still should have been the QB in there from the beginning. Woodson made some great passes today but missed a few wide open guys too. Need more consistency. He was under 50% passing completion two weeks in a row now. Seems to be Telegraphing passes a little bit. That Holding penalty in the red zone after the first down pass to their 6 killed us. Could have been the game changer. The lack of discipline penalties we suffered have to be reduced.

Who are the players transferring to Akron this year that will make the biggest impact? Did the team lose anyone last year (other than to graduation) that will hurt us the most this year?

QB situation - still pretty much a dead heat. Difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of a dual threat QB, given the rules of engagement. #19 looked good when he threw a few passes, as well. I was pleased to see Pohl playing at a faster pace. Pohl had the only turnover of the game, I believe Thanks for the props on CC19, the other Chapman QB (Caleb). He was glad to see some action and loves to be at Akron and a part of the Zips. Being a South Florida boy he said he has never seen winter like this before he said it snowed two days ago. That's wild.

Without a lot of words try to describe the meltdowns we witnessed the past two weeks. Without question we are a better team than either we played. But, what happened? Give your top three reasons in one line or less each? Ball State Turnovers kill you, counting a blocked punt we had 6 and are lucky it was not 7, how many for BSU? QB play inconsistent along with offense in general, lack of confidence grew with every series of 2nd half. There are other QB's dressed that ought to be given opportunity. Pohl is the best we have, period. Ohio Their second string walk on QB played great mixing the pass with quick runs out of pocket. Our 1st team QB is out and we had Inconsistent QB play from replacement. Not enough mixing it up with run and pass. Spread Offense needs both to work. I know going from Division II to Division I requires you to sit out a year but does it require him to forfeit a year of eligibility too?

There are several new Zip QB's coming in this fall and some have been working here this summer. Others have been said to be coming in. New Names: Devyn Wood - Western Brown High School, Mt Orab, OH Caleb Chapman - Evangelical Christian School, Ft Myers, FL Tre'von Chapman - From Pitt, Ashland, Can't Roosevelt High School. Supposed to be here this Fall according to everything you read. Anyone heard of him being around yet? THese three are on top of the 5 now on the Roster.
